The biggest lie in martial arts
I entered the ultra heavy division as a small guy at a jiu jitsu competition to find out how much size matters in jiu jitsu! And the results were... interesting.

    This works for rolling. But how does this translate into learning submissions properly. Do they expect you just to figure those out.

    i dont think anyone outside the comment section tells this 'lie' though.. 🤷 Everyone learns in their first week of grappling (after they've rolled/wrestled half the class) that both skill+size matters.

    I think that one big vulnerability of a purely sport-BJJ fighter is the tendency to leave the opponent's arms out, an obvious effect of the rules of the sport. I train Ju-Jutsu in Germany and recently, I've been doing randori with a guy who also trains Ju-Jutsu, but at a dojo that leans much more towards BJJ. Him not controlling my arms has led to him tapping out while I was in an inferior position. I'm not good at fighting. Basically, I realize far too late that I'm in a compromised position, but from there, I'm pretty good at finding ways to slip in minor to major annoyances such as locks, pressure points and chokes as that's something we practice a lot in our dojo. So I would be absolutely caught in a side hold, unable to escape because I suck, but the guy left my arms free so I could squeeze his thumb, put a finger of mine onto the pressure point behind his ear or even get a dirty choke in to submit him. Is this a good way for me to fight/spar/roll? Absolutely not. But it's a vulnerability the other fighter has in their technique that I'll ruthlessly exploit for my own advantage until they learn and sport BJJ unfortunately tends to produce fighters with lots of these vulnerabilities due to the restrictive rules. That's all fine for a competition where these rules apply and as a combat sport, BJJ is super interesting and great, but for self-defence, it's very, very incomplete. Even in the more self-defence focused styles, it's still all in the premise of "a fight will most likely go to the ground in which case we'll win because this is BJJ" that I believe doesn't hold true in a self-defence context and makes practicioners feel way too comfortable on the ground. The ground is just not the place to be in a self-defence situation. In a BJJ competition, the vulnerabilities you have on the ground barely matter because you're fighting a single opponent who has to abide by the same rules you do. On the street, while you're trying to take one guy down with classic BJJ leg entanglement mastery, his buddy is going to kick your face in because rules or basic human decency don't matter here. Wearing out your opponent until the fight goes to the ground and you win is nice in theory, but in practice, your face will be too smashed for you to do anything by that point because you absolutely neglected that aspect in training (as a purely sport BJJ practicioner).

    you dont need take downs. bjj was made to beat the the bigger guy once it goes on the ground, not to pointlessly try stand up with him working the perfect throw on a bigger guy. just grab a hold and pull guard and u win which is why its far superior to judo because you dont care if u get thrown it's almost like they're doing you a favor if you are better than them on the ground. the only time it's bad is if u dont know take downs AND you're worse on the ground than they are.

    The problem is that a significant portion of people practicing BJJ believe that they are training the most effective and the only system in the world. They are very often aggressive online, lack a deeper perspective on martial arts and simply insult others. This is compounded by the fact that some identify (incorrectly) MMA with BJJ. They, in turn, believe that only MMA exists and that traditional styles or systems adapted for the military and police are nonsense. I have the impression that the structure of people associated with BJJ provokes them to simply be unpleasant and aggressive towards other systems. It is very difficult to talk to them about anything and they always know everything better - it is very tiring. In addition, there are people like Mark Striegl, who have made a name for themselves by making fun of other systems and have deliberately raised a troll farm. the worst thing is probably that he tries to show as funny systems and exercises that he simply cannot understand due to his own limitations and looking from the perspective of MMA. Such people do the complete opposite of what you and Jesse do, dividing the world of martial arts and causing mutual dislike.

    I am a 6’2 265lb blue belt. It’s difficult being the big guy in the gym. Most nights I have to sit rounds out because after I go through the 2-3 guys who are 200lbs all the small ppl aren’t really lining up to roll with me 😂. Then you definitely spend most of your practice rolls going easy on people and that doesn’t make for good training for competition. Learning to turn on the intensity at the tournaments has been tough when you’re used to always going light with your partners.

    "I think the result of this one is inconclusive" After getting hit in the head about 20 times....the fight would have been over long before you managed to get him to the ground. The only chance a pure BJJ practitioner has against a superior striker is if they get them to the ground early before they have suffered injuries such as a broken nose, fractured eye socket, broken ribs etc

    I just watched an episode where you had to say that your purple belt is useless after getting tossed around by a smaller judo black belt. Kazushi Sakuraba fought monsters with moderate success, Adam Saitiev fought above his weight class and was one of the greatest wrestlers in history, Fedor used to finish dudes the size of Hong Man Choi. It's truly the skill that makes the difference, and in that regard, size doesn't matter.

    I think most people here absolutely miss the point completely. When Josh was overweight slob at 210 lbs (in the picture you can see the man boobs and gut) or shredded at 150 lbs we are dealing with the same person, the same height, the same bone structure, the same frame. Are you suggesting the fat out of shape version of himself would automatically be better off in a fight because he was "bigger"? Saying "size" matters and immediately referring to weight is misleading. His 150lbs self would have advantages and disadvantages against his 210 lbs self and vice versa. Its not the weight per say, its a combination of things that someone with a combination of traits, muscle mass, bone structure etc... bring to the table that combine to form "size". What is the percentage of that mass in useless fat? in muscle mass? What is the strength to weight ratio of the opponent (is he fighting against someone who weighs an amount he can squat or deadlift)? I doubt the 150lbs shredded Josh was squatting significantly less than the fat 210lbs Josh, if he was weightlifting while cut. Imagine if you had told prime Mike Tyson, all 5foot10 and half inches of him, that he should have given up his gloves and not bothered with boxing instead of the whooping he inflicted upon all those "bigger" opponents he absolutely smoked.

    Can you imagine if he knew that every joint of the body has a Pressure Point (PP) release. Or that the Katas do not have blocks because they are all STRIKES. Yeah, I know most think, "They (PP) don't work!" I met three bikini babes in the sauna, who are like Jiu-jitsu groupies for three buff BJJ studs. I asked them if they use Pressure Point technologies, and they ignored me, so I smacked the one stud nearest me, and I said, "DUDE!" And he said, "Dude...what???" I asked again if he uses PP attacks. And he said, "Dude, they do not work!" So, I said, "Dude I can easily escape your GUARD, right here, right now!" And the bikini babe groupies said, "Ooh CHALLENGE!!!" So, the hunk had no choice he had to accept my challenge on the floor of the sauna at 24-hour Fitness. So, he aggressively pulled me into his guard, and I attacked his right-side inguinal crease pressure points K11&10 (PP) with my Left elbow, and with my Right elbow I attacked Sp11 and when this happened his hip joints released into a freefall, and I could have ripped his groin muscles if it were actual combat. Then, I used my Right knee I attacked Sp11 and slid down the Spleen meridian to SP10 and that is massively PAINFUL, and the MMA guy said, "Owe!" And the bikini babes said, "He said, Owe!" Then, I cleared my Left leg first to get the side mount and then made him submit with my right-hand grasping his wrist ENERGY DRAINAGE points and applied a figure-4 painting the floor until he tapped out. As we left the gym he says with a holler, "PPs DO NOT WORK!" And I said, "I made you cry OWE!!!" and we both laughed. But I still failed to get the bikini babe digits...

    Part of me thinks this is kind of cool, but most of me says it's ridiculous. I guess if I remember it's a sport that saves it but as a fighting style not so much. If you step in to me then turn your back thinking you're going to flip me you are going for a nap. Period. If you try to grab me same thing. It does look fun though. It's play fighting.

    • @gleetis60
      @gleetis60 2 дня назад

      @joshbeambjj I get your being sarcastic but it's true. You had to just stand there to get tossed. Not reacting. Even when you were pinned for 20 seonds. That was an easy knee in the head. So like I said it's cool as a sport but not a viable fighting style. Of course if someone has a natural gift at fighting they can utilize certain parts of it but just the training alone won't make anyone a good fighter. Oh and yes, I guess i am technically a real life street fighter given the fact I've been in way more street fights than ring fights.

    I don't know how this stuff works. But I think beginners can learn either way. Whether drilling or this method. I teach my beginners heel hooks. Because there are so many idiots out there who have been told to believe that heel hooks are some deadly technique or something. Anyone under 6 months is not allowed to turn submissions fully. The guys that are assigned to roll with these beginners are instructed to expose themselves for certain submissions. If they are caught in them they tap and continue to roll slowly. So if it's the dreaded heel hook or the more dangerous kimura the beginner is not allowed to crank with pressure and the other person taps and keeps going. After more experience than they can go harder
