Judo sensei told me to concentrate on learning 8 throws. 2 throws in every direction forward, back, left, right

No matter what previous experience I may have, anytime I learn a new martial art or style or pretty much anything new, I go into it with a clean slate. The Japanese call it Shoshin, or beginners mind. That way I can learn that system completely without any influence or bias as if I have no experience. I find it more fun that way.

I was gearing up for judo class and then muay thai instructor goes, judo is next, if you want to improve your muay Thai, and your do, I highly recommend staying for judo. So that's the story of how I signed up to get the shit kicked out of me for an hour and a half before judo class.

Judo is bad ass!! I’m very fortunate in the fact that I have Japanese instructor that trained in Judo under Kosen rules of Kosen Judo.
We focus a lot on grappling as much as standing.
I hope to have my brown belt within the next 6 months. I’m probably going to be looking at a year or longer now that covid 19 had shut everything down.
Anyways, I love it! We have the stand up game and the grappling game. The black belts in my class can submit BJJ Blackbelts. It’s pretty fun to watch such high level skill go back and forth and tap each other out. However, I would say Judoka trained under Kosen rule set is 100 percent more effective from a self defense stand point compared to BJJ. Not taking anything away from BJJ but the stand up is not there.
I will say though that BJJ is better at grappling if you’re dealing with a Judoka that Trained at a sport focused judo school.
That being said Kosen Judo which had very effective grappling was around before BJJ so essentially they’re two sides of the same coin.

It's funny because you say "we don't need to use all the throws, we just need some" I have been feeling the same way about Jiu Jitsu in general. Many of the ground techniques seem less relevant in real life scenarios, where as a wrestling or boxing technique might be better suited

If I were "..doing it again..." (or any one)...I think we have to be honest answering the question of "Why? (why are we taking or considering studying that art?). When we're little we might study some martial art because we "...want to be like (Bruce Lee)...". Others think they need to learn "self-defence" (I feel is marketing for guys that want to make their income teaching a martial art to people who also go to soccer practice a few times a week...also, I don't feel spending decades learning any martial art is really going to help in a real life violent encounter...because it's rarely one on one against some one with similar skills, strength, mindset...usually they are in a group/gang...and I also feel...if someone can afford lessons they can afford to move away from that "bad area" or avoid those bars). For fitness? any art works if we're young...kids...and healthy.
If for some reason some one has a desire to fight in a controlled environment...boxing, Muay Thai, MMA...etc. Why any one with choice of jobs they could pursuit would chose fighting (full-contact) I'll never understand...if it's a way out of poverty/ltd options...then yes (e.g. muay thai guys from Thailand)..Some boxers from the US/Canada...

I like your concept. But u think your view of judo is very closed minded. Bjj came from judo. And kesa pin is a beginner pin. And judo can win by throw pin or submission. And I more judo schools do both 50/50. Standing /ground. I think its more what school you go to. For example saying a large part of bjj schools teach point & stalling bjj would be general accusation. But I agree combining the two is best way to go.

  • @AjaxNixon
    @AjaxNixon 3 года назад +1

Seems like this same thing could be said about BJJ, its not really Ju-Jitsu. There is really no 'real jui-jitsu' and if a greco roman guy adds in some Judo and a Johny Bravo electric chair, and it works, then he can call it ju-jitsu just as much as the gracies can.

It's a reflection of our times. Speaking in generalities is the perfect opportunity for the constantly offended to live up to their names. So the rest of us have to continuously emphasis NOT ALL. But for us normal people, we get what you mean without the proviso buddy.
Jiu jitsu guy = Good on the ground, Ok with throws.
Judo guy = Good with throws, Ok on the ground.
Boxing guy = someone who's good at punches, but nothing else.
Karate guy = someone so gullible you could probably sell them magic beans.
P.s. Humans speak in generalities because of time interests. So for example. Someone might say ... "cats don't like water" That doesn't mean posting a picture of a cat swimming proves me wrong. That just means you're a millenial that doesn't understand it would have taken far to long to name every cat that doesn't like water. And then tack on that your Mr Pickles is the exception to the rule.
P.s.2.0 I'm only joking Karate guy's. Please don't give me the Touch Of Death.

But all through higher belt levels there's more advanced selfe defense and some sport oriented techniques. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu self defense for life! 😁👍
