5:24 Donkey in early versions was apparently played by my leftover dryer lint
Gotta love messing up the settings... I did that with a remote control once.
i hate that i knew what you were talking about before i got to that point. i've seen that 'early shrek rendering errors' video so many times that i have all of them memorized..
I thought that was a chia pet
Actually that was a render error that the people at dreamworks thought was so funny they added the scenes in the bonus features of the dvd.
I thought he was a fluffy bunny
To specify: Shreck was a HUGE movie in Europe, with completely different voice actors for each language, so it's just a good movie overall.
This is what I was thinking too. I have only ever watched this movie in spanish and its good as well. It doesnt matter if the people making the voices are famous or not.
One has not experienced Shrek until one has watched it in Swahili.
Anna Keene Shrek
I remember when it first came out when I was 7, I didn't want to go see it cause it that much cause it wasn't Disney and didn't look particularly pretty, but my dad told me his coworker was raving about the film. I didn't adore it, but everyone, especially adults, was obsessed with it in away usually reserved for Disney. Same with Ice Age. Yet I liked Spirit.
@@matthewkoester1640 Especially since the "celebrities" they cast were not only in minor roles (Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, etc were all the same, so it's not even like they did this for marquis value), but it's painfully obvious that the characters they were playing weren't meant for them (such as Kate Thornton voicing Joan Rivers; seriously, Joan Rivers's character was literally just named "Joan Rivers" in the American version).
That Donkey robot is nightmare fuel.
I agree. I HATED it when they added Donkey to the Preshow area. They should have just left the Preshow alone. It was perfect the way it was when the attraction first opened.
@@ThePirateprincess23 They redesigned the donkey
@ThePirateprincess23
Yeah, but after a while it'd be like going to another Spider-Man movie and having to sit through yet another origin story. It gets old.

5:24 7:28 Goddamn I loved the Shrek DVD extras with all those in-progress and in-error animation "bloopers". I think Over The Hedge did that too? Bring back animation bloopers/errors!!!
andrea b They used to freak me out as a kid. Lol
PaperPotatoCorder lmaooo understandable. I can vividly remember a few freaky ones
Shark tale has it too I just watched it
BenPaz oooh I didn’t remember that! My old DVD of it is too scratched up to play now, but imma totally look for one sometime and check it out, thanks :)
@PaperPotatoCorder Me too- it's way too freaky for me
I watched the various Shrek movies so much as a kid. Somewhere I have the trilogy set they released.
And I gotta say, as a kid my favorite thing about the films was not the films themselves, but the bloopers. Not the voice-over ones, but the animation ones. I still love watching CG models going haywire, it's just the funniest thing to me. Those things were great.
trilogy? wow that is old
@@SmashLiXs Yep. There were 3 initially and then a few years later they put out Shrek 4, which I know I watched but I don't remember anything about. There were also a few shorts I think.
@@bee_sylvester there was 5 planned but because of how everyone reacted to shrek 3 they made 4 the final shrek & the 5th one became puss in boots instead because they were under contract to do 5 shreks
@@SmashLiXs Oh man, I forgot about Puss In Boots. I know i saw it but I don't remember any of it, other than I didn't like it. lol
@@bee_sylvester puss in boots is awesome. tell me, do you think shrek 2 is the best shrek?
As an Italian, I can tell you that in 2002, we got this short released in VHS format and the best thing is, it could only be purchased in supermarkets along with a pack of pop-tarts! LOL :)
That's interesting, sounds like a Win-Win to me though lol
I'm not surprised that it only came with Pop-Tarts, but I am surprised that Pop-Tarts are sold in Italy (although that might just be because I watch a lot of Japanese RUclipsrs that have to import Pop-Tarts from America).

The interesting thing is that Shrek 4-D WAS technologically ground breaking. First use of 4k 3D technology and the first use of that style of motion base seating.
Yeah, it was a little different from Honey, I Shrunk The Audience in that the floor didn't move, the individual seats did.

It’s official! Shrek 4D is closing forever as well as the Gift Shop at Universal Orlando on January 10th 2022.
That sucks.
I had no idea Shrek 4D is closed in Universal studios LA. I’m sad now :(
yeah a while ago
WAIT WHAT!?
Same. I'm glad I went a year before it closed
What they did was change the theater to show all DreamWorks films which currently is Kungfu Panda but they can still show Shrek again plus they have increased the number of Shrek characters in the park you can meet outside the theater along with other DreamWorks characters. They kinda needed to remodel the theater queues anyway because of Harry Potter World being located next to it so they gave the whole thing a facelift so they can flawlessly change what us showing without having to remodel for each film, just pop in the current film and press play so minutes to change what is being shown not months to change the theming of the theater plus the feel in the new theater down to the fact now when you are sitting in the theater the film is projected to the sides of you on the walls also in a panoramic display ups the show experience.
The ride sucks, the chairs are janky and loud and the glasses don't work. It's just a short movie that physically annoys you.
Still confused as to why shrek does a wet fart onto the crowd
I remember this ride made me angry for how gross it was, but not any specifics. That has to be why. Who did they think would enjoy that?!
He's spreading his pheromones
He shit his pants.
I realized at the 7:00 min mark that this video was supossed to be about the Shrek 4-D ride 😂 I had completely forgetten the reason I clicked in this video
The Road to El Dorado was amazing. Screw anyone that hates me for this
The Slasher Club I love that movie but I think people didn’t like it too much at the time cause it was much more adult focused and I’m not sure why it had to be presented as animated?? The movie is basically all human characters in an exotic place that could’ve easily been live action. I think most animated movies should be animated to push boundaries of facial motions, technology, and artistry that live action just can’t grasp in a good way. I can see parents liking it themselves but not kids. But I could be wrong on why it flopped I didn’t do any research that’s just my guess. I think it deserves a lot more Credit honestly but no one really talks about it.
There are plenty of good films that unfortunately don't do well in the box office.
@@PipeGuy64Bit I know and it really effects how much a person might want to watch it
The Road to El Dorado is a good film. It just didn't do that well at the box office.
Don't forget Spirit, that one is a forgotten great film too.
So glad you did a video on this one! The disconnect between the preshow and the ride is one of the most confusing / jarring experiences I've ever had at a theme park. I remember being so confused!
I think the preshow is far better than the actual show. I don't think the main attraction is nearly as amusing as the preshow. -- K
@@WeCanShowYoutheWorld I respect your opinion.
I think the pre-show is probably the best pre-show I ever seen!
Did anyone else's chest hurt when he said Shrek came out in 2001?
I just pretended he was wrong ;) -- K
That movie is older than I am. Oof.
@@a_really_awkward_queer_person Lmaoo you're gonna give them a heart attack by making them feel old
Lmao time flies
Ditto. MY god, I was still in my private suite (my mom's belly) about to finally move out when the first movie was released.
Hey the Scottish accent thing worked out for them didn't it? It gave shrek a sort of rougish charm that balanced out the grossness
I'm surprised DreamWorks went ahead and re-record the entire movie with Mike Myers. Was Chris Farley. 95% of the film I could have seen them trying to save money and just use Chris Farley's voice. That was a gutsy call it going to cost to Studio money which ended up being the smart idea cuz I think Mike Myers was perfect for Shrek and Chris Farley voice would just not have work and the film would have bombed in the box office work.
there was a posthumous Farley movie called Almost Heroes that came out a few months after his death that played up his appearance, and it ended up bombing. i dont know when they decided to recast but i wonder if that convinced them to
That's kind of not fair to make that assessment when we don't know for sure what the outcome for any movie could have been before their release. especially not for ones made either.
I've seen this before... it always bothered me because Farquad had no interest in Fiona once she became an ogre. But now he... does? Whyyyy? He can go kill a human princess instead can't he?
Whatever though, it's cool to see the history of this!
From my childhood, I still have the Shrek 3-D DVD, which is a home video release of the attraction.
Fun fact: I myself performed the very last Shrek 4D show at Warner Bros Movie world Australia as dungeon master. I am very proud of this achievement. It was an amazing show to run. 🤗 Nothing quite like scaring the audience in the dungeon room. And play pranks like telling them to do up their seatbelts when there wasn’t any installed 😂 aaaaaaaah nostalgia 😏

I experienced Shrek 4D last year, and the video didn’t play when the curtains opened, so the ride had to be reset. The staff handled it so well that i thought it was part of the ride for the first 5 minutes. Then it dragged on for 10 more minutes until it finally worked.
The "interactive donkey" from the rehaul is terrifying
I remember being struck by the near-total disconnect between the pre-show and the actual ride film, which is jarring.
With 95 of Farley recorded I kinda wish we got an option to play the movie with his voice acting
rosenrot234 The Shrek Farley played is a different version than Myers
They could sinc it with an early version of the animatic
rosenrot234 the lips wouldn’t match, smarty.
Its stated in the video that Myers required an entire rewrite. That means new story boards too. So the two movie versions are two entirely different movies.
*This could work as just audio and no visuals.*
I loved so much Shrek 4D, At least I went on the ride on 2009
I’m surprised how long this attraction has lasted. This ride is so old that in the Orlando version it still tells you to buy the movie on VHS at the gift shop.
2:18 "Not the bees Dunkey! Not the bees!"
What are the bees doing in my swamp
I remember going to this when I was little and lived in California! One of my favorites since it was one of the ones I could actually ride. A lot of it is a blur now, but I have my commemorative picture with the Shrek walk-around where I was wearing socks and sandals still. Good times.
I also apparently made a scene when they did the effect for the spiders by screaming at the top of my lungs in the ride.
I flinched at the spiders just watching this video.
I remember this show! This is the one where Shrek cracks a wet fart on the audience. I...did not go back for a second viewing.
wait I haven't been on this for years. so let me get this straight. shrek farts on the audience but not just a normal fart a flipping wet fart? that is disgusting on a whole other level.
I’ve seen it on Netflix at home, but in show do you get wet?
Mythical Actor no you don't get wet when Shrek farts. That might have been different in other parks but in Orlando that doesn't happen.
Can you do a video about how Road to El Dorado almost ended dreamworks? I used to really love that movie haha
Woah, that's actually an interesting bit of trivia, the DVD release. I remember even Dreamworks films as recent as Megamind and Monsters VS Aliens having their own shorts (clearly animated by a B team) bundled in some special releases, and taking place after the film itself. I do wonder, if any of those shorts were planned to replace Shrek 4D at some point...
Interesting. I could imagine Button of Doom as a ride
There was a Monsters VS Alien 3D short film bundled in my dvd. It came with glasses. It worked but all we could see is red and blue.
The Chris Farley audio always makes me so sad. I thought Meyers did great but Farley has an honest sympathy to his voice that would’ve been nice to hear for Shrek as it makes his character a little more sympathetic as opposed to a guy putting on a silly accent.
Agreed. As perfect as Meyers was in the role, Farley's Shrek feels like an actual teenager/young adult. He's a bit more sympathetic in that clip, too.
@@KaijaSchmauss Wait, what - hold on! Shrek is supposed to be young?
@@Hedvigu I think he was in the original version of the script. I have no clue if that was still true for the version we all saw, though.
yeah. what ive heard was super fuckin good.
Farley's voice may have worked for the original design, but it doesn't work with the shrek they designed for Meyers

Update: Universal Studios Florida announced in 2021 that its Shrek 4-D was closing with its last day of operation being on January 10, 2022. Rumors are speculating that a Minions themed attraction will be replacing it.
14:34 I remember being at that part of the attraction as a kid wearing a Mario cap and hearing Donkey say “it’s a me Mario” as I walked by lmfao
yup, this is all consistent with my memory of the early days of the attraction! i remember when shrek 4-D first opened at universal orlando, and the lines were literally over two hours long for the damn thing. i also specifically remember this being pre-shrek 2 because (at the time) my 7 year old self had no idea that there would be a sequel at all, so i remember thinking that it actually was the sequel. at the time, 4-D attractions were becoming super popular. this was during the continued heyday of honey, i shrunk the audience and it felt very similar to me as a kid. i'll always remember the pre-show line "do not put on your ogre-vision glasses before you are seated... unless you like falling over."
I forgot this was about the ride
And people say that Universal is better than Disney.....nope. Universal disappoints me everyday. Disney has the best parks. Why? Because of me
Jeffrey Katzenberg sends you a message. Any video that references this movie or ride should have your face photo-shopped onto Farquad, that will compensate for something.

Shrek’s 4D will be closing at Universal Studios Florida next year. RIP 2003-2022
I remember being in complete disbelief when Shrek 4-D got a DVD release just a year after. I bet Universal wasn't too happy about the film not being exclusive to theme parks.
I think Shrek would have been just as good with Chris Farley. I think the movie needed Eddy Murphy and I can't picture Shrek without him.
I agree. I actually really enjoyed that test footage, especially Shrek's design. I love Mike Myers and his performance in Shrek, but Donkey really made the film tbh

I remember hating Shrek 4D in Universal Hollywood but when it got replaced for the Kung Fu Panda ride I was mad.
We had a Shrek 4D in Australia for a while. I miss it
6:40 me and the boys on our way to Foreskin reattachment
It’s only been a year but I still miss this ride. I know it was dated but I still like it. Especially since I’m a diehard Shrek fan and have been since I was a kid and this ride was a childhood favorite of mine at the park. The rides closure hit me so hard that it made me contemplate atheism.
Oh, I remember this ride as a kid!
During the spider part, I had my feet on the seat and took my glasses off. To this day, I'm still happy I did that 🤣
How the heck did Road To El Dorado bombed? Did Disney play dirty and pay film critics for fake reviews?
I don’t recall the public ever saying they disliked the film. I remember how classmates, teachers, and friends were obsessed with this film after its release. I lost count how many times I watched this film played at school, on the airplane where the majority of passengers were adults cracking up, and many other public places.
10:23 Oh my god, so this is why that random Shrek 2 for PS2 level took place in a spooky forest with an onion carriage chase scene.
Great Vid Yesterworld. Always get pumped when you post a new vid.
Nicholas Cage as Shrek honestly sounds amazing
I would of loved that but if he wasn't into the role I don't think it would if been nearly as good
I rode this over the summer. I was pretty impressed with the quality of the short. Didn't realize it was basically the same team behind the movie, but I'm not surprised.
It’s amazing what this one short achieved. Id wouldve thought that after seeing it once people would get tired of it. Quite the longevity for an animated short. I saw it as a kid and loved it I had never experienced 4D before and the jabs are Disney are still a bit fun since Disney is everywhere and completely inescapable. This and the fact that Shrek is an online phenomenon I think contribute to the surpring popularity of Shrek 4D. I think at this point it has achieved way more than expected should be updated to something else.
Could you imagine the meme culture that would’ve arose with Nicolas Cage as Shrek!?!? 🤣👏🏼😱
Earlier when I was at Universal today, for the first time, I had the whole Shrek 4-D theater to myself! There weren’t many people riding Shrek at the moment since it was an early morning, so I was the only one inside! It was great.
Here after it was announced that it’s closing in Orlando too
I hope that DreamWorks Theater reopens in Universal Studios Hollywood with not just Kung Fu Panda, but also the return of the updated (hopefully another successful) Shrek 4-D attraction in the DreamWorks Theater attraction.
Who knows what gonna be the next line from the DreamWorks Theaters here are my suggestions the. DreamWorks "HTTYD" franchise and the DreamWorks "Trolls" franchise.
When exiting Shrek 4-D a clip of the band Self covering“Sugar Sugar” by The Archies was played. Self was on Dreamworks Records and had the song “Stay Home” on the Shrek 1 soundtrack. The songwriter of Self, Matt Mahaffey, produced the audio portion of the Shrek 2 DVD extra Far Far Away Idol, a parody of American Idol. Sugar Sugar was intended to be used as one of the songs of that extra but had to be cut. Matt Mahaffey plays Captain Hook performing Hooked On A Feeling. The Shrek 4D exit was the only way to hear that cover as it has never been officially released by Dreamworks. You can hear part of Sugar Sugar in some clips on RUclips from the ride. Also check out Self, they’re awesome
I didn't know that I needed this information until I watched this video. So good!
Thank God, Murry nor Cage didn't accept the role, Mike Myers was the perfect casting for Shrek.

When we went to Universal Studios in Cali last year in 2019, they had a Donkey animatronic just chilling by one of the food stands talking to people. I legit saw this at a Zoo when I was younger. Idk why but my Zoo had this and also Spongebob 4D as well at one point.
I’m afraid the Florida version of Shrek 4D has closed down in Universal Orlando Resort in 2022 to make room for a new Minions themed attraction next door from Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem.
I have such a clear memory of going on this ride when I was five, interesting to hear the history of it!
