I had the 'Mickey needs new friends' book as a kid! What a nostalgic reminder! I was always upset still that his friends weren't very nice about anything...
Wait, so Mickey's friends didn't even rehearse for him and they just showed up to his concert hall expecting him to conduct them? Mickey ABSOLUTELY needs new friends lmao
ArticWolf325 !!! YEAH! Or something similar with not only animatronic puppets, but also film projections on giant screens and live costumed performers!
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem the current leads at Disney have any interest in trying to re-fuel interest in Mickey as a character. They seem to have more interest in obtaining IP's and milking them for all the nostalgic value they have.
I clicked because the thumbnail had Simba from the Lion King Show. I haven't seen the one in California if there is one. Or the original with puppets, but I loved the Animal Kingdom show because its so vivid in my head despite it being so old.
We saw The MM Revue in 1974, and I always remember this attraction with fondness because Mickey is the focus of Disney, and orchestrating him, and his character friends is the staple of Disney. Your shared knowledge is extraordinary using historical images and video, is fantastic. As you mentioned, The Three Caballero's animatronics sang their signature song in the program. They are positioned on the right and left sides of theater walls and in line with the middle of the curtain stage. Donald, José Carioca, and Panchito Pistoles moved between opposite walls by an animated bullet across the curtain that simulated the illusion that they moved to the opposite side. At first, their spotlight was on them and then blacked out, the animated pistol bullet projected traveled across the curtain. When the animation ended, the characters magically reappeared, spotlighting them on the opposite wall.
We were there one time for the lion king show and it got to the scene where the wildabeasts went crazy. They lights went out and didn't come back up but simba's line of "dad? dad?...." then a few beats later "Ladies and Gentlemen, we thank you for visiting the legend of the lion king. Due to a technical issue...." and they herded everyone out. I laughed hysterically for a couple of hours afterwards
I personally REALLY love Mickey's Philharmagic. While not as great as Muppets*Vision 3D or Captain EO, it still captures a lot of the Disney magic from the Disney Renaissance period.
Ahhh...I recall this from when I was little. The Three Caballeros part of the show is really the only part that sticks in my mind. A flash of light would zip out of one of them and they would vanish from the part of the stage that the light came from and re-appear where the light went to. That was a very cool bit to a 6 year old anyhow....glad that they made it back....in a way.
Why wouldn’t anyone want a huge ride theatre type stage filled with such memorable characters singing our favorite songs? Come on people. We need waaaay more of this dangit!
Wow what a wonderful story. Lots of cool scenes with Mickey Mouse in here! I love your whacky and dramatic humor! Your commentary on the “Mickey Needs New Friends” book was really hilarious! Excellent work on this video! I can see why some people would think the Mickey Mouse animatronic is scary, but I can also see why a lot of people like it too! Yesterworld is such a wonderful RUclips channel!
I wonder where those Lion King puppets are at now. They seem like very cool collector pieces. It’s sad that most got discarded or lost if that’s the case. Those puppets seem very cool.
@@anastasiachebotareva9088 Hmm… The puppets very well could be under the track in the Séance Room, since a partially dismantled Max animatronic was under there for a while.

I remember my 4th grade teacher had the Mickey Needs New Friends book and reading it. I never thought Mickey’s friends were being jerks, but seeing this video has made me see otherwise. God! Why must most stuff from my childhood not age well?!?
I love Mickey’s Philharmagic! I saw that so many times I think my boyfriend was getting sick of it, but it was just so much fun. I love 4D attractions and seeing classic Disney moments with this brand new technology honestly made me want to cry. It’s such an immersive experience I feel like I’m literally being sucked back in time to when I was a child.
Legend of The Lion King was my favorite attraction as a kid!! Used to go to it multiple times a day when I visited Disney World, it was such a good show.
Hey there from Baja CA in Mexico. Thank you for your awesome vids. I grew up in NY, and our last fam vacation was to WDW the year it opened. I spent my school breaks alone with my 4 grandparents in FL, going to the parks and moved to FL to care for my grandparents in 90. My son was born in 92, and we had annual passes until 2010 when we moved to Orlando from Miami. I found East Lake fish camp in Kissemee, where we pitched a tent for $7 a night when we lived in So Fl.. I kept my kid in an umbrella stroller until he was 8, telling him to suck his thumb and hold his blankie, to get him in free. With friends working at the parks from the gay chorus, we never paid an entrance again and went all the time. We carried snacks, got kids meals at Cosmic Rays, and stayed free at our friends houses until we moved up. 3 families of gay parents raising our kids together at the parks. My friend saved a jeepload of guests from being hit by a train on safari in AK. when the gate failed. I remember a lot of live stage shows in the 90s in MK we would sit outside and watch. I havent commented b4, but wanted to thank you. I have PTSD and rarely go out except for the grocers and the beach I live 4 blocks from. My son is now 30, caring for his grandparents in CT, and I moved here 3 months ago after my house in Key West fell into the ocean during Irma. I road tripped to 24 National parks camping for 5 years, then remembered this town I visited in the 80s here in Baja. I watch a ton of Disney YT channels, but yours is my fave.
Another awesome video, sir! Can I say that I appreciate both the humor/jokes and side comments/realizations you add. It really makes the videos more engaging to listen to and not dull like a couple other people make it. Rock on!
Wow! You just made my childhood again. When I saw the video of the Mickey Mouse Review, the little 9 years old boy inside me came back to life. I saw that way back in 1977 but had forgotten all about it. To see the images brought back so many memories of that vacation with my parents and younger brother. Thank you so much for bringing this back!
Yes! I'm so happy to see someone talk about the history of this building! Both Mickey Mouse Revue and Legend of the Lion King were such interesting looking attractions. It's a shame I wasn't alive yet to enjoy them. I didn't even think about the fact that Mickey Mouse Revue had the only Mickey animatronic. How odd that Disney's mascot only has had one animatronic. At least that'll change once Mickey's Runaway Railroad comes around. But anyway, thanks a bunch for talking about this. I've suggested this topic to you, and a few other Disney related channels. :)
What really sucks is that much like live theater if you miss it you miss it, there's not much in the way of being able to see Attractions like this if you can't afford it or miss it by a month
Could you further elaborate on the fate of the Legend of the Lion King puppets? Where are they now? What was that walk-in tour stages of MGM? Where were they displayed? Great video! Very informative and interesting to see these vintage attractions.
When my high school's marching band went to a competition at Disney World, one of the MGM backlot buildings was our practice room and I saw several duplicates of the Legend of the Lion King hyena puppets! Neat to finally learn what they used to be used for.
calia x That could probably happen for a reimagined version of the show with the hecklers being the Evil Queen, Maleficent, Captain Hook and his pirates, The Big Bad Wolf, The Queen of Hearts, Oogie Boogie, Gaston, and Ursula!
My first visit to Walt Disney World was in 1978. I was 3 (almost 4) and I remember we went to see Mickey Mouse Revue and I was enthralled. I'll admit though that when Panchito fired his pistols during the Three Caballeros number it scared me (I *was * 3, mind you). I remember seeing Legend Of The Lion King as a kid a few times and then I rewatched it on RUclips, and I think the show is really good! The puppets are cool and it tells the whole story. I do like Philharmagic though but I kinda wish they would bring back Lion King somewhere.
I heard about this attraction from my dad who said he saw it when he little. Also my dad has a book that showed the Mickey Mouse Reveu. When I saw that The Three Caballeros were in it I looked it up instantly.
I think there was more than just Pinocchio, Geppetto, & Big Bad Wolf that were removed. I think Humphrey the Bear was removed too, & replaced by Baloo. I mean, in said poster, Humphrey already had Baloo's color scheme.
“Mickey needs new friends” for real though. We need a reprint of that book with one page of Mickey giving the reader a dead eyed stare.

At 15:08 that's hilarious right there.
I just love all of your intros, the ones with Buzzy just crack me up. xD
Fun Fact, I have Song of the South. I found it at a thrift store near my house in Pennsylvania.
I think there was more than just Pinocchio, Geppetto, & Big Bad Wolf that were removed. I think Humphrey the Bear was removed too, & replaced by Baloo. I mean, in said poster, Humphrey already had Baloo's color scheme.
baloo was so cute
i saw him on talespin
Song Of The South is also avalible through Japan on Laserdisc
