  • On this episode I'm doing something I hate to in the name of making the car better and adhere to the image I have in my mind. Crunching the timeline to Power Tour is making that image fade. Committing to something more realistic keeps it vivid in my mind and the motivation to make Felony rad is at an all time high!!!
    BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO'S JOINED US IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS!!!! All of you guys are awesome and I appreciate all the feedback (good or bad) and support!!!

    Moving the goal posts I believe is the right thing. Knowing you, you'll want everything to be proper. And giving yourself more time you'll have the car you want finished the way you want it. And be much happier.
    Keep going, take your time, and looking forward to the next video.

    You're doing the right thing. I could see the anxiety creeping, spoken from experience. I once tried restoring a car in time for a show. One day, hurriedly welding up all sorts of bits, I forgot I had a jar containing a small amount of paint thinners on the ground and it caught fire. My first thought was, "No worries, I'll take it outside where it can't burn anything else." Of course I dropped the jar, spilling flaming thinners. Thankfully a member of my family grabbed the fire blanket and it didn't burn the house down. That was the moment where I decided that deadlines can fuck right off.
    Take your time, and enjoy it. :-)

      To a certain extent, a deadline is a healthy thing to adhere to. Otherwise, a task that really shouldn't take longer can become a massive procrastination. That's why some cars sit in garages for ages in complete (spoken from experience) But yea, in some cases you have to know when to move the goal post and be realistic and that's what I did here. I'm glad you realized the same and didn't do a realistic flame job to your project lol. Thanks for watching mam, the 68 project is gonna ramp back up after Power Tour this summer!

    My '69 Dart Swinger was dragged out of a 'backwoods' yard in central, west Texas. Body was in excellent shape except for the forward footwells. Thanks to the rubber floorcovering & the bad wiper pivot seals working together to trap water against the footwells. Took the opportunity to cut the entire floor out, put in a manual tranny hump, subframe connectors, torque boxes, mini tubs (to the rails, not huge), and relocate the springs in. It wasn't stock when I got it, they had "Hillbilly'd" a '68 Road Runner powertrain in when it was a worthless 10 year-old cheap Dart.
    This is really familiar, watching you go at the Mustang

    Man these cars have souls that always speak to you. If more time is what you need to make it yours, take it! Because what would probably happen is, we would get more footage of the Mustang breaking or things going wrong, rather than some dope footage. Love the channel no matter what car you're working on!

      That's basically what I always say about old cars, "all old cars have a soul in a story to tell". I have a 68 Mustang coupe myself and I blew the motor up in it again.And my son wrecked a couple years ago. If you can keep from using aftermarket finders or trunk lidsplit don't,cause they will never fit right.

It’s going to be awesome when done. By the comments you have some cool followers. The 996 is also cool. Looks like you’re having fun!

    The cowl sides are also structural. They form a box with the lower cowl, firewall, and part of the floor. Maybe not as much as the rockers and torqueboxes, but they are structural.

    I'm sorry Andrew. I understand the decision that you had to make. I had to make the same one last year. There just wasn't enough time to get my 67 ready for the Tour. I'm still not sure I will make it this year but I am giving it all I have.
    I had to replace my entire cowl panels as well. I do not regret the time I took to do this. Is it perfect, heavens no, but its solid now. Take your time, get it right FOR YOU. I will still be watching and pulling for you. Best of luck to you and I will be lookkng for you on Power Tour.

    So here's my take on the Powertour, I've been on 2 of them. 2001 and 2003, back before they exploded and were forced to use super speedways and huge paved venues to hold all the cars. Back before influencers started to make it popular. Old cars and hot rods rule that trip. They can be anything from restored originals to all out resto mods, it doesn't matter. Anybody can buy a newer car and make the long haul. It takes a special leap of faith to do it in an old ratty musclecar. Keep cutting your old Mustang apart and make it ready for next year.
    My '69 340 4 spd Swinger and a girlfriend of a couple months was my leap of faith in 2003, and the leap was with a friend and his AMX in 2001, both trips were successful, albeit with a couple hiccups, and I would do it all over again. Both trips were from Edmonton and back with no hook, no trailers, no support. Just some loser gearheads that wanted to do the coolest roadtrip ever.
    I have a 2012 Boss Mustang that would likely be fun to take, but it just wouldn't be the same, there's nothing like having your senses assaulted by a 50 year old musclecar. Plus, I had my Swinger long before my Boss, the love affair with the Swinger runs deep. Not trying to be a critic, it's just an opinion.

    Hard to tell from the video if you have enough of a gap on your butt welds but to me, it looked like the gap could have been bigger. The goal is to fill the gap and not weld over the top. Sometimes I’ll use a small screw driver to keep the gap open while I weld if that helps you. Either way, great work with the project it’s been a fun watch so far.

    • @RidicULooseAutomotive
      @RidicULooseAutomotive  3 месяца назад +1

      Really? I was always under the assumption you needed to be tight tight for fit to help negate blow through?

    • @bluesmoke218
      @bluesmoke218 3 месяца назад

      No, you need a gap so the weld has somewhere to expand into. About as thick as a dime has served me well. If you don’t have the gap and you go to grind you’ll end up grinding all the weld off or warping the panel.

    • @bluesmoke218
      @bluesmoke218 3 месяца назад

      Keep at it though bud, it takes practice. It’s one of those things you just got to jump in and learn as you go.

    • @bluesmoke218
      @bluesmoke218 3 месяца назад +3

      Another trick that can help is to clamp a bar of aluminum or copper to the back side of the gap that you are welding if you can get to it. That’ll help dissipate the heat from the weld so you won’t blow through as often.

  • @justinwillis1069
    @justinwillis1069 3 месяца назад

    Another great video on the stang! It does escalate quickly for sure, but you won’t regret it. It’s just piece of mind of when/if you pass it along to kids or the next guy its solid & rust free.
    I’ve literally replaced everything you’re doing on mine. DONT BE AFRAID OF THE COWL.
    All those spot welds can be intimidating, but it actually goes pretty quick. I bought upper and lower, got the lower in and painted and seam sealed around the vents plug welded the top on. Fit like a glove. You got this!!!

      @RidicULooseAutomotive  3 месяца назад

    I understand the pain of missing a deadline or goal but it’s for the best. Tough call, but the right choice.
    When digging into these classics, it often becomes the “while you’re in there” mixed with a can of worms.
    Side note, you can do a cut inside the fender area of the cowl to replace the vents without cutting the whole cowl. That’s how I did mine.
    I’ll still see you on power tour. The verdict will look just as good. ;)

    That car may have black and yellow plates, but no way did it spend its life in Southern California. I noticed right off the bat both rear quarters were wrong, no red refectors were on them. And cutouts weren't there for them. And the amount of rust that showed up everywhere was pretty bad. My 68 Mustang I bought in 1977 from the original owners was purchased new in Palm Springs California. The entire body is original, and has no rust. It's in beautiful condition and has been appaised for around 26 to 28.000 dollars. 289, automatic, Factory AC, power steering, and the optional turn signal indicators in the hood. 10 years ago I had the entire interior completely re done. I removed the carpet myself and the entire floorpan was beautiful and rust free. I certainly hope you paid less than 8 grand for this one.
