The thing about Getou that makes his fall into darkness believable is that by his code of "protecting the weak" meant he already kind of looked down on non-sorcerers. He just needed the right amount of trauma and feelings of loneliness to be pushed over the edge

That and let's face it the job of jujutsu sorcerers is basically a form of pest control....the only difference is that the pests they face bite back and come from human depravity....knowing the things that they face come from humans and what they do is similar to high payed grub work will wear anyone down...
He might even be why gojo believes being slightly insane should be a job requirement... because geto was described to be very rational in a way but snapped

      (spoiler warning)
in his defence, curses will kill people, and only curse users can defeat those curses. regular people are entirely defenceless to curses, and so curse users are basically sacrificial lambs for the good of "wider society" aka non-curse users. Geto realized this as well after seeing that Haibara was killed that they do very dangerous jobs which often times cuts their lives short, even for special grade users (look at what happened to nanami). There is no such thing as retirement for curse users, they are commanded to exorcise literally until they are disabled and can no longer fight (Todo) or die (many characters).

I think Geto is the reason why Yaga tests a person’s motivation for becoming a Jujutsu sorcerer. He knows that people with lofty, noble and impersonal aspirations like Geto can crack, while people like Megumi, Maki and Nobara who all have more selfish and personal goals aren’t likely to stray too far from their goal.

@@freeph78 I think Satoru would never become like Geto because he is, in a way, enlightened; standing alone, beyond such things as little conflicts between sorcerers, beyond struggles for power - because he >is< power. Killing them would be pointless, like a revolution that just replaces the old tyrant with a new one (eventually and inevitably). After all, Gojo would not want to be a leader of some Institution, that would be too much of a bother for him. He is the king, not some president or chairman.
      Spoilers for Manga:
Of course, if he is released from the Seal, he will take his revenge on the higher-ups (or what's left of them), but that will be personal.
Like a lion killing hyenas which ate his cubs when he was away. On its own volition, the lion would not wage war on something lesser, like hyenas, because he is too far above them. It would be like a human waging war on ants. Why would we do that? Only if some ants would somehow invite our wrath, by, for example, killing a defenceless baby. Then we would eradicate them to not allow that to happen again.
Oh man, Gojo is such a perfect overpowered character, his entire personality, deranged as it is, perfectly fits his might.
He truly is like Sukuna - just that he still has some connection to the human world, his students. If they disappear, everyone is doomed.
I wonder if, in the end, defeating Ryomen will cost us Gojo - but not his life, rather, his sanity or loyalty towards our species. If all his students and loved ones die in the struggle... well, wouldn't that result in the rise of the new King of the Cursed Spirits?

Another thing that I thought really helped pushed Suguru over the edge was finding out from Yuki that they already had another star plasma vessel ready for Tengen, so the fact that Riko died didn't matter, which just further proved that everything he and Gojo went through ultimately ended up being meaningless as Riko's life was treated as nothing more than a commodity by the higher ups of jutusu too.

another aspect of geto's descent was seeing Haibara, his junior who had so much joy and personality, had died after he had gone on a mission that was above his pay grade. It was said at the start of jjk that it was common for higher-ups to send students to exorcise curses even when they were above their grade because of the shortage of sorcerers (woah i wonder why).
it's kind of the lead off from where he was going "exorcise, consume"- a grueling job without an end. Haibara's death made him realise that there genuinely was no end, that the end for most sorcerers is usually death, disability if they are lucky, generally at a young age. And these sorcerers died in the line of "protecting" non-sorcerers, not themselves or their own way of life. mimiko and nanako was the spark because it culminated his feelings of "we're totally disposable in this thankless job" and turned them into a realization that those people who he was protecting, who his friends had died to protect, ultimately saw them as subhuman.
I think i would lose it too ngl

I think you missed two wery important key-reasons of Getos downfall.
1.Right after the mission he learned that there already was a new vessel for Tengen. Of course we, as the readers, know that there wasn't a new vessel, but to Geto at the time that fake knowledge made it seem like all their suffering with struggles and Rikos whole existence and death were meaningless.
    2. After their failed mission a power gap between Gojo and Geto apeared. That means that now Gojo doesnt need help of Geto to exorsist spirits and he can go to missions alone. As a result, they spend less and less time together. That is proven by the fact that Gojo imediatly noticed that something was off with Geto. If they spend more time together they could talk about Getos doubts and changing worldview BEFORE the point of no return.

I can't help but wonder what would have happened to Getou if Gojo had been on campus when Yuki showed up that night. Part of me thinks that if he hadn't had all that behind him before he went to rescue Mimiko and Nanako, maybe he would have simply knocked out those people in the village that had been guarding them and taken them back to the school with him. Maybe if he hadn't been raised feeling so alone all his life before being thrown into the world of chaos that is jujutsu sorcery, maybe he would have been able to confide in his one and only dearest friend a little more. Personally, as a writer who thinks a lot about the possibilities with storylines, I'm particular to the idea of "if he'd shown up with these girls and spilled his heart out to Gojo, they would have both been on a different path than either of them ended up pursuing canonically." I think that Getou would have been a prime choice to be a counsellor or therapist of some sort at Jujutsu Tech. Not only for students, but for other sorcerers. Gojo speaks often of how sorcery is an "individual sport" and to me that says that even the adult sorcerers have a lot of baggage they need to unpack. But also I think if anyone knows a thing or two about trauma from a young age that comes with being a sorcerer, it would be Getou. Anyway, I love him and am constantly thinking about and missing him so very dearly umu

I'm sure Gojo would have supported him. Gojo would have still tried to fix the system from the inside the way he's been doing in the canon and Geto would have saved sorcerers outside the system. and they would have occasionally helped each other. the good ending 🥲

This is why he portrays the elders higher ups and Zen'in clans as some loathsome corrupt assholes, from wanting to kill Yuuji and Yuuta simply because of their circumstances, or Maki gets beaten down and continuously belittles depites her amazing talents.
This is maybe a weird stretch, but in a way the authors probably trying to gives a huge middle fingers to Japan's societal structure as a whole. Basically, he pulled "fuck you old mans, i do what i want, fuck your rules and traditions".

The most ironic part of Geto's character is that he was the one who convinced Gojo not to massacre the Time Vessel Association and prevented him from going down the exact same path he would would later spiral down into.
He saved Gojo but ended up losing an ally who could have helped him realize his dream of a Sorceror's paradise.

Regarding the Hasaba twins [MANGA SPOILERS]
It's a damn shame that they died without ever meeting the main cast. Being Geto's kids, they have a lot of potential to the story to learn about what Geto once stood for and leave something for Gojo to remember him by. Having a tormented curse user learn to see the world in a brighter way could be its own spinoff.

They both went through multiple horrible and terrible events in their life that made them question their beliefs and make them go rogue. They both hate non-sorcerers/magicians. When I read the Hidden Inventory arc all the pieces clicked about Suguru, i don't agree at any level with his philosophy but i understood why he fell at that path, for starters the revelation of how his jutsushiki worked was a major red flag about his mental health, even before Rika's death he must already have been feeling the effects of absorbing so many curses.

-Yuji eats Mahito to permanently exorcise him
    -Yuji acquires Idle Transfiguration
-Yuji uses Idle Transfiguration on Geto to transfigure Kenjaku and Geto's souls, removing Kenjaku and giving Geto a chance at a redemption Arc
