- In a game extremely memorable characters, Monsoon manages to stand out quite a bit for as limited as his use is in the game. A man spouting about the power of memes in the world. He was also designed to play against the main game machinic of Rising so that the player would be forced to master the mechanics and adapt their playstyle in order to defeat him.

I think if memes didn’t become the term for internet in jokes, it would have become a more powerful term and not something comical out of context in the metal gear series.
But thats what memes are. Ideas spread. It was no coincidence.
Memes make us laugh. They may inspire us. Memes are what you take from them.
Memes were a thing back then lol They knew what they were doing. Its Kojima we are talking about.
Yeah. Monsoon actually has a deep, interesting philosophy. Too bad people just read “memes” and write him off as a funny edge lord
Also heya Jack
Yup
I mean if you disregard the internet’s definition of memes, everything Monsoon says is true and powerful
I just wanna adress the fact that during Monsoon´s speach about memes, you can literrally move your camera to the right and one of the cyborgs just plays with a cat, it´s adorable.
And if you look left you can see Sam being bored and wondering when Monsoon is finished with his speech, which people who replay this game for the difficulties probably can relate too, including me

interesting part about Monsoon is that the only human part left in him is mouth.
Monsoon is completely nihilistuc, as a result he does not hold almost any passion. In contrast to Sundowner or Mistral he does not find pleasure in combat or sadism.
Rather he sees it as natural way, to survive and adapt.
This however, deprived him of almost any emotions.
The only thing that give him sense of pride is mocking those that hold to ideas. As a result his mouth is his only remaining human part. Like every cynic, he finds peace in mocking idealists. It is very narrow, but still existing pride and passion.
Technically he also has a neck cause Raiden final attack independent of the player is always using a direct cut through the neck ripping Monsoon's head off using the HF Blade, Raiden probably realized that was the only weak spot Monsoon had cause the mouth is protected by the helmet AND at the beginning of his introduction right after falling trough the building and fusing his body for the first time, you can clearly see Monsoon doing the ''neck snap'' thing(I forgot how its called lol), being a huge foreshadowing, Monsoon appearance in the game started and finished with the neck, and talking about memes.
As a cynic, this is correct.
Monsoon seems to enjoy combat as he taunts Raiden and calls him a weakling

I think Monsoon's facade of being all big talk and "nature running it's course" breaking as he pleads for his life is really interesting and deep for his character. Sure, he may wear a shit-eating grin and laugh manically as he stabs away at his foes, but I feel deep down that Monsoon is someone who is incredibly fearful. In times of genocide and war, he went to the Mafia for protection, same could be said for Desperado. In the lyrics for "The Stains of Time", the one line "Into a peaceful life" always stuck with me a bit. Perhaps it's that Monsoon wishes he wouldn't have to gain power in organizations for his own safety. He knows it's what he must do to survive, but not something he wants. Perhaps when he was more naïve he thought there would be a day when things would get better for him, when war, bloodshed, the rules of nature would no longer torture him. Yet, as he had learned with his age; his dreams, have disappeared.
It is most likely a facade. The horrible things he witnessed and the crimes he committed as a result of that initial trauma must have broken him in a fundamental way. The grinning apex predator is a result of his fear of ever being at the mercy of someone else again, someone without any mercy or regard for life. If he's pressed once again into a situation that threatens him, that facade may shatter. Really most actors in Metal Gear just need therapy but chose violence instead.
Everyone monsoon until your own memes strike back at you
"Kill or be killed jack"
"You're right, im killing you then"
"W a i t n o ."
Want to add, that even his body language can tell about the facade thing. When Raiden stands up Monsoon takes a step back (and I remember him doing the same action a couple of times in a potentially dangerous situations)

@@mercury2157 welp didn't they burn him under car tires and trash tho?
I feel that it's ironic that the only time Monsoon truly regains his humanity is when he is absolutely terrified of someone who has just embraced his true self
Monsoon witnessed horrors in cambodia and is implied to choose the safest path if he can. His entire philosophy is built on justifying what he's done and seen. Though he is **very successfull** in wearing the mask of psychopathy, you see how he feels about things occasionally in his reactions and such. When you start paying attention everything monsoon says is not about memes or being along "nature's course". It's because he's piss scared of meeting the fate he's seen and has personally forced upon others.
@@no3ironman11100 why does he mention memes then to raiden after he already meets his fate?
@@createrz8433 He says that when you struggle to off him and it's an actual fight you win in the end. His pain tolerance given to him by becoming more machine than man allow him to keep his mask on. Memes on the Internet are jokes passed around, memes by the literal definition are viewpoints and ideals passed around. Metal Gear Rising was revived by the Internet term of meme, and monsoon himself became not just one term of the word, but both, and due to the popularity, his mindset, his meme, was adopted by many people. It's beautiful
behavior as well can be memetic. for example, why do many people from India do a head bobble when they talk? some kind of memetic societal behavior. why? when and where did it start?
Truly nature running its course. The Internet taught us that.

The truly ironic part is that memes by definition is just viewpoonts, concepts and ideas that are transmitted from people to people like diseases.
Memes, even the internet ones, are exactly that definition. Memes can be dumbed down to funny internet picture but in broader definition it is actually a idea and a concept that is spread by pictures. The form of memes may change but the definition and uses doesn't, internet memes is not exactly what monsoon is talking about but it still fits into his definition. That's the ironic part.

Monsoon as a person is very deep, and it's kind of alarming to see someone just, following the "memes" blindly, never stopping to question who they are or if what they are doing is good or not. Really, I feel like most of the villains in this game could have gotten over their trauma or their "memes" and became better people if they tried hard enough.

Now that… *that* is exquisite
Honestly he's the most annoying boss fight in the whole game to me, if only because you really need your blocking perfected in his fight. That being said "Stains of Time" will always be an amazing song!
monsoon has been the ender of many no hit runs for me
His boss fight boils down to the question "Can you parry?"
I think you mean the best tutorial boss
I got through Monsoon barely able to parry. Sam was the "hope you know how to parry 100% of the time" boss for me.
Parrying is way easier with mouse and keyboard and switching between is seamless so I just do that, gamepad for blade mode and mouse and keyboard for rest of gameplay during parry heavy bosses.
It's kinda cool, that almost every character who does the whole "strong prey on the weak" thing, ultimately begs for mercy or says that its wrong, only when they are now the weak. Except monsoon, he can fully accept it, and even when he panics, he ultimately resigns himself to it still.
Honestly kinda surprised there wasn’t a cut to a 4-5 second clip of DSP during the “Monsoon’s fight is a skill check to be sure you know how to block and don’t button mash” segment
Monsoon had really cool concepts, designs and overall character outline. His theme also was a banger
"I guess you could say a good meme never dies, Jack."
From what I remember. Sai actually weren’t specifically ninja weapons
They were actually peace keeping weapons, due to the hand held trident shape, that easily caught and disarmed/damaged most blades weapons
Personally this actually enforces themes even harder than the ninja aesthetic.
Monsoon is the oldest winds of destruction member. Him having the only weapon that conventionally isn’t bladed and only pointed, compared to literally everyone else having a bladed weapon of some kind shows how different his ideals are
Mistral is incredibly controlled, and accepts her reason to fight and kill is for Armstrong
Her weapon is a staff that holds 2 daggers at each end. She has complete control of it
Sun downer revels in his raw love for war and killing. His weapon is a giant scissor blade and 2 large nearly greatsword machetes
Sam is lost on his way. He doesn’t know why he kills anymore until he finds a rival in raiden. His weapon is very similar to raidens, being a similar 2 handed katana.
Monsoon? He doesn’t give a fuck. He doesn’t care and thinks “might makes right” and fights to survive. Sais being a primarily defensive weapon while still being able to be deadly and 1 handed pushes the “fight to survive” nihilistic mentality of monsoon
It pushes monsoons weapon choice into just being a cool part of an admittedly less represented weapon in media. To an actual insight of his character and his role amongst WOD
Edit: someone also pointed out. Armstongs main weapon. Being his nanomachines in his heart. They’re also primarily defensive, while Armstrong doesn’t use them for raw defense. In fact he uses them mostly for offense. Which even FURTHER connects him to monsoon cause of their weapons share a philosophy and use case. Which makes sense cause monsoon is basic the right hand man to Armstrong
Don't forget Armstrong, using a defensive weapon of nanomachines while also utilising them for offence which could show some duality in his character as both the final boss and yet a character Raiden can relate to as shown in his theme It Has To Be This Way and it's lyrics.
i mastered the parry system fairly early when i played and found monsoon to be joke.

Mansoon is one of my favorites in the metal gear universe he has a very strong philosophy of how the world operates his definition of a meme is so true and still holds up even to this day this game was so ahead of it's time
I like the theory that Stains of Time is also a theme for Raiden coming to the realization that deep down he is and always will be Jack the Ripper, as opposed to being just Monsoon's theme
I never knew that Monsoon's final words changed depending on what and how you did during the fight, I thought it was just random. Interesting.
Everytime i see him i'm reminded of how i had to beat him with exactly 0 blocking, and i did the same until Sam's bossfight where i learned to do it right.

This may have been the only time i've seen some mention about the final lines a boss says at the end of a fight. I've always thought it was interesting that bosses had varying lines and wondered if they correlated to how you fought them. Monsoon in particular had the 3 different lines shown in the video, but I remember even Bladewolf screaming for mercy at the last second in some instances of his boss fight.
Idk, i really liked the thought that the bosses would react so drastically to Raiden if the fight was done perfectly as if they were horrified of the monster they unknowingly unleashed to the world.
Since Monsoon never got his own subtitle, I made him one:
Monsoon: The Summer Torrent
Another thing I think is pretty cool about “Stains of Time” is how if you listen closely to the backup vocals during the chorus, it sounds an awful lot like Raiden. And since all the singers are meant to sound like the voice actors, it’s interesting when you think about how much of Monsoon’s theme, or any of the boss’ themes in general, could connect with Raiden as well. Of course it’s not 1:1, but there’s definite similarities.

Is it just me, or do the Japanese got some pretty badass farming tools? Sai, Kunai, Kama sickles. I understand they were probably adapted over time to look more like weapons, but still, they have no business making farming tools look that cool

I'm currently on my fourth playthrough of Metal Gear Rising, and just a few minutes ago, I faced Monsoon again. Up until now, he was my most hated boss in the game, but that was before I knew how to actually fight him. I just kept spamming EM Grenades and going apeshit whenever he was able to be attacked, and I took most of his rush attack and using nanopaste to beat him in a test of endurance.
But once I learned how to fight him (how to parry, what to parry, how to wear down his invincible mode), I'll be damned if he wasn't one of my favourite bosses so far, and it was the first time I beat him without EM Grenades, and made him say "Stop it." instead of "Have it your way."
You better watch yourself Sundowner, because Jack is back, and he's right on your doorstep.
Nice trivia of Monsoon. So Khamsin and Armstrong are left to have their trivia. One for Desperado and one for the final boss, NANO MACHINES SON!
Finally! It was about time someone has made a long video about monsoon's life. He's such an interesting character.
monsoon of the sussy imposters
I've been waiting for this video for a long time, there really aren't many people who've actually discussed Monsoon's character in detail (probably due to his use of memes) so this was a great video!
The real question is who owns the Japanese garden Monsoon or Sundowner, Monsoon has the DLC scene and the ninja vibe while Sundowner has the samurai armor thing, which makes me wonder who the member of world marshall is actually responsible for the creation of the garden...
Oh and definitely ain't sam, cause despite being the most samurai-looking dude and saying in the DLC he would enjoy the fight the garden saying is ''classic'' the garden was already there when he arrived, also cause he just became a member of the winds so I don't think he has the money to make a giant garden inside a building in like 2 years of work lol
In these uncertain times, we need magnets more than ever. Large, powerful magnets, strong enough to pull us all together.
great video, very excited for the armstrong breakdown! (also the raiden one will be interesting if you decide to do it)
Based on my crude experience with the Metal Gear franchise, only played MGR:R and MGS (In that order), I feel like a lot of Metal Gear characters turn to nihilistic perspectives on life in order to cope with the trauma they've suffered. Part of me pities them. Another part despises them.
Honestly when DeModcracy put Monsoon as second from the bottom in his boss ranking, only beating out MG EXCELSUS (which honestly… yeah) that was the dead giveaway that he didn’t get it. Monsoon’s pre battle speech and fight is probably the most memorable 20 minutes of the game except for maybe the banter with Armstrong. The fight itself is probably one of the most original and inventive use of a human boss enemy I’ve ever seen in a long time.
20:24 I guess you could say that Monsoon carried on Psycho Mantis's memes
