- On Dec. 4, just before Bon Iver took the stage at Pioneer Works, an old ironworks warehouse turned nonprofit arts and culture space, these prophetic words from Union Army officer Sullivan Ballou echoed off the Civil War-era brick walls:
"Sarah, my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me to you with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me irresistibly on with all these chains to the battlefield."
A week after writing those lines, Ballou was mortally wounded, dying for a cause in which he firmly believed.
At first, these words struck me as disconnected from the evening's music. Bon Iver's new record, 22, A Million, feels so distant from the Civil War and the words of Sullivan Ballou. But there's a very real kinship between the letter and this band. Believing in what you do is essential to Justin Vernon and the music he creates for Bon Iver, and impermanence and duality are prevailing themes of this album.
So, here in Brooklyn, at Pioneer Works, a space Vernon believes in and actively assists as a member of the Advisory Board, he and his team created a very special evening - a transcendent night of voices masked, faces hidden in darkness and a performance aimed at soul-searching and purpose over pop and stardom.
This music was performed by a powerful big band, with two drummers and a sax ensemble backing upfront processed sounds, like vocal alterations and sampling, alongside electric and acoustic guitars. It was a visionary performance, fit perfectly to brilliant lighting and sound, seemingly executed down to fine detail by a guy in a Tipitina's T-shirt, loose pants and high-tops: unassuming, seemingly uncaring, but most certainly in control.

I feel like attending a Bon Iver concert would be a spiritual experience

Jake Welch will
I can vouch. Absolutely a spiritual experience. Even when he was shredding a guitar at the end of Creature Fear, it felt oddly serene. It's amazing

Yeah. This is my headphone test track
this version of 33 'GOD' may be the best piece of music in recent memory
it blows away the album version. After listening to other live versions, this is the best by far
I feel this way about the 666 version here

My dad died yesterday, and for some reason this concert has been helping me. Thank you for making such beautiful music for those of us in pain.
Music is here for this, Hope you good, be strong ! ❤️
Lost my dad a month ago too, I know exactly what you’re feeling ❤ hope you’re doing ok, I’m trying to take it one day at a time ❤️ Love like that doesn’t just end, we’ll carry it with us forever
Sending my love to you! ❤ I hope you’re okay and that you have support.
Love you brother, you will meet again
I'd die happy if I got to see Bon Iver in concert
Lilianna cloud in berlin this February 😍😍
I see him in Oslo 29 january
Lilianna cloud same
27 januari, netherlands:) waited 3,5 years
go to Eaux Claires its a fun great environment.
The dude on drums plays with so much raw emotion
From 5:30 , only Bon Iver could turn ‘but I gotta fold my clothes’ into the sickest drop, actually breathtaking
Take that J Cole!
That’s why he’s in the top tier
this version of 33 god is so good
The one and only time that sentence has brought me tears or joy not sadness 😂
This is my emotional support video.
Justin Vernon seems to understand how to communicate emotions involved within certain moments in life that people feel but don't really know how to describe, or even realise they feel it. But he does it with more than just words, in the song _45_ there are only about 3/4 different sentences, yet a million emotions are communicated. It's like he's tapped into something different. He's a genius.
James Sinton Couldnt agree, comes from someone like myself. What you wrote right there thats exactly how i feel
it’s called melancholy. i feel that to all his songs
Simple like that!
Thats how I write , play and start singing
@@michaelangelo1546 melancholy is a specific feeling, this guy is saying that he feels a lot
this is why i personally think "22, a million" is the best album justin and co have released thus far. there is so much fucking emotion that is perfectly translated with the glitches and vocal effects and sampling. i cried listening to both the album and this live performance. they keep outdoing themselves. aoty, 2016.
opinions!
Indeed. But Bon Iver, Bon Iver was a fucking masterpiece as well.
I found it very experimental.
I tried so hard to like the album, to me he was just trying to be different and lost the soul of his other records.
Ryan Moorman yes yes yes. I was at Eaux Claires when he debuted this album and I can say firsthand what it's like to see a crowd of thousands in complete awe. A spiritual experience like none other and this album is absolute magic.
2024 and still so fantastic! Best concert I’ve ever seen. Please release this anytime soon.
I legit got RUclips red so I can listen to this with no ads
This is one of the best recorded live shows I've ever seen.
The audio production, the lights, the videos behind the band, the band itself!
I could go on. Perfect performance. Thank you NPR.
So true
100%
I used to listen to Bon Iver on late night car rides home when I was 14. I am 22 now, and it still brings me such peace.
This is seriously one of the best concerts I've heard. Better than the album imo
5:46 Only Bon Iver could make a line as simple as ‘well I better fold my clothes’ sound like the best lyric ever created.
I mean the spiritual significance of the line is pretty impactful as well
Definitely one of my favorite moments in the album..."I could go forward in the night...but I gotta fold my clothes." The "but I gotta" fills the rhythm with absolute perfection and brings the in the hit of the next measure.
As a drummer i was always taught to not show emotion when you play. "Don't pull faces, just look serious"
I love seeing professional drummers just feeling the music. Just to feel what they play and show it.
Fantastic performance. One of my all time favourites.
that sucks that you were taught that. whoever told you that definitely didn't understand the importance of emotion in music
Most drummers since the 60 were making faces( keith moon , john bohnam, etc) so keep doing what you are doing
Music is emotion - why not show it, it makes you human and relatable - and what is the difference between the singer and the drummer when they feel the music they play?
March 2022, and i keep coming back to this MASTERPIECE
Hear hear
Same always come back to 5:45 and listen to that part on repeat
This is my first time. Not sure I can describe how I feel. It truly is one of the greatest performances. I found this album 2 days ago. Can't believe nobody has ever shown me this. But I'm glad I'm here. I'll be listening to this for years and years to come. Can't wait to dive more into Bon Iver since I've only really heard songs from his first album.
@@jaredalvarez4340 Oh, lucky you. You are in for a sonic treat. The sophomore album Bon Iver, Bon Iver, is on par with the brilliance of 22, A Million. Listen to it more than a few times with quality speakers or headphones. And if you are really going for it, listen to it while a little high and don’t read the lyrics, as they are mostly phonetic. If there’s one thing I would like.. forgetting Bon Iver’s discography and rediscover it all. Enjoy!!
I'm seeing him in a week and a half. So freaking excited.
Strafford is maybe the most beautiful song. This version is everything.
it’s incredible
Was looking for this comment because I wanted to leave it myself. It's really amazing.
Right? Even better than the album recording. This version is what hooked me on Bon Iver to begin with - it was part of a playlist on youtube, and so I had to seek out the rest of the album. This whole concert is a masterpiece.. Gorgeous production, sound, vocals, arrangements, everything. I wouldn't change a thing
It is!! I love this version more than the album record
Agreed - I keep coming back to it
“I believe true focus lies somewhere between rage and serenity.” Some say my music taste sounds “sad” but man, this set is pure.

Bon Iver is universe altering, depressingly transcendent and life changing.
MY favourite thing about this video is that there aren't a million phones and ipads in the air recording this! Everyone's just enjoying the music they've been blessed with witnessing.
wipeout911 That's because (no hate to them or their audience) their audience is 80% stoners and theyre letting the music have a spiritual effect on them. There's nothing wrong with them being stoners,, just merely an observation. I am a big fan of Bon Iver myself however I am not a stoner.
I was just wondering why the crowd is so awkwardly dead. I could never go to a concert and just stand around like that. Super lame.
@@karenmorris8303 it's a vibe.. massive respect for the artists and the performance. Also probably an middle aged crowd. Plus a major recording underway, so i could imagine they might have even been asked to keep it at a certain level to preserve the integrity of the audio? But I personally wouldn't want to miss a thing.. I saw Bon Iver for this tour, and it was awe inspiring. I wasn't jumping around, yelling and dancing the way I might at a different show. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Excellent filming, editing, and sound quality. The NPR Music team does such a fantastic job of producing high quality material, from fantastic artists. I mean, heck, if they had a record label, I would probably listen to everything they produced.
Sean Clancy well they are npr. if their stuff is off just a little bit there would have to be a serious reason for it.
This is why we cannot let anyone cut funding to NPR, PBS ect!
Honestly, the audio quality is great (as it should be, as their chosen medium is fucking RADIO) but the camera angles were average, and the direction during the first few songs was truly fucking lack luster. Case in point: idiot director kept cutting to Michael instead of staying on Justin when he was playing guitar in 10 deathbreast, just for example. Yes, I have a background in video and audio production.
If you have to include "yes I have a background in video and audio production" at the end of your comment, you're the absolute worst. I bet you work at Radio Shack.
Sean Kristen
I'm gonna be honest. This live concert made me love the album.
29 strafford APTS is so incredible in this LIVE. I love that entire album but this version gives me life. This entire show gives me life
It's so much fun to read the comment sections of the Bon Iver RUclips videos, because people open their hearts like you've known them for a long time. It's so beautiful to share these experiences just from hearing their music. This is the kind of music that strengthens life. The music that makes you want to sit on a mountaintop enjoying the view or mow the lawn or sit by the ocean, or have a cup of tea with your best friends, or cry over your lost love. That's music. Not all the other shit that's about someone's ass and how big of a bass drop the song has.
I was having a serious anxiety attack at work.
I'm absolutely not a fan of Bon Iver, at all, very far from it even! but don't ask me why, this is saving me right now.

"I don't know about the whole tradition of 'leaving the stage and coming back' thing. So, we're gonna literally play two more songs and then we're all gonna be okay, and we're gonna be really happy, and we're gonna love each other, and we're gonna go take care of each other and the whole other, all the shit that's going on."
-Justin Vernon
I love JV to bits, but I was actually a bit meeh about this little speach. sry
Well said Justin...perfect.
8 circle is my number one favourite song ever
Hands down my favourite. After my wife have birth to our first child, she was rushed away to surgery due to blood loss. I was left holding our 10 minute old baby on my own. After some precious time alone, I played this concert to her. She layed in my arms staring at me the entire time. She's now one and we watch this together each Saturday morning and whenever she is upset. Now it's our favourite.
Until I saw this video, I had no idea how they would ever be able to perform live. The multi-layered vocals, the seemingly infinite number of sounds, from electronic to brass, it just seemed too much to pull off. This concert, and the production values of this video, are indescribable. I can only imagine what it was like to have been there live.
so true!! a breathtaking concert! it sets new standards in almost every aspect of modern music!!

sending you ❤️
Big love for you.
I think the best thing about this video is how much positivity I've seen on this thread of comments. I've never seen so much analysis, appreciation, love, and just a genuine enjoyment of good, pure, emotional music. Any musician that can take us away from reality and put us in this wave of feeling is truly talented. A beautiful concert. My father always told me to spend money on experiences and not things; I would have done anything to see this performance live. But, nobody ever said the best experiences can't be free. Thanks, NPR! :-)
anytime I'm listening to Bon Iver on here, I come to the comments. It makes me so damn happy to see others connecting and relating to one another. You said it perfectly.
My dad has always said something similar. He said that if you are thinking about going to a concert or a big sporting event, or instead selling your ticket or just not buying one, you should always go. Because a few years down the line you won't be thinking, "I'm really glad I didn't spend that money." You will most likely be thinking, "Damn, I wish I had been there."
i was blessed to be there that night... texting my friend and reminiscing on what a true joy and experience it was. dig your positive comment.
Im jealous but a positive jealous i was not there but thanks for putting this on utube
I would even flip that and say his music takes us away from distraction and into pure reality.
CREEKS is just... beyond amazing.
Blake Davison on another level
Blake Davison fucking sick
I was sent a link to this tonight and CREEKS had me in tears. I've not even heard of Bon Iver until today.

This has the best audio production of any live show I've ever heard.
That’s Justin ....
When I first listened to this album I didn't get it. Now I don't think I get anything else.
I come back to this set at least once every few months and I’m not sure exactly what I’m looking for but I know it exists here. It’s like the deepest validation I’ve ever felt for my uniquely painful experience as a human on the earth, as well as a glimpse into what could be, or what is, just beyond the veil of my ego - or my depression, or death, or something else. It’s both affirming my deepest pains and bringing out my inner beauty all at once. It’s the truth. Or at least a hint at it. And I’m not sure where else I’ve gotten that close to truth - maybe holding my daughters - but that’s a different kind of terrifying truth, both equal parts fear and love. I cannot define the experience his music brings me into but I cannot ignore its impact on me.
Just...yes
This is my first like on a RUclips comment and first reply ever. It's comforting to read something that I can recognise within myself. At least, while we're here.
beautiful words!! thank you for sharing.
To learn from the sufferance is what motivates us to find and create ways to become better
I'm having the pleasure of listening this by the first time, wish me luck
don't know why, but this makes feel the same way as M83's 'hurry up, we're dreaming' album. both bring up one of those rare moments in me where i feel like i have connected to the source of life and ultimately its beauty. and then i'm sitting there in the mid of the night listening to this masterpiece with tears in my eyes and i experience some different state of consciousness, if that makes sense. it's like the moment the music reaches your ears and eventually your brain, the perspective on life dissolves into a bunch of various feelings, resulting in pure joy and some sort of sadness as well. ah fuck it, idk how to describe this, words will never be enough to describe whatever is going on in me while listening to this stuff.
Michi Bornemann - I think what you’re describing is commonly referred to as “the feels.” Example: “oh man, this music gives me the feels.”
Love this so much. So magically, beautifully described. I'm relating so much. Bon Iver's music takes me there. Music is one of humanitys greatest mysteries
Exactly! This album is definitely one of them. For me, just like burial - untrue, bonobo - the north borders and James Blake - overgrown

"I don't know about the tradition of leaving the stage and coming back. so we're gonna literally play 2 more songs. and then we're gonna all be okay. and we're gonna be really happy. and we're gonna love each other. and we're gonna go take care of each other with all the shit that's going on. lots of love thank you guys so much"
i think i came twice while listening to this.
Justin Vernon is a freaking genius
SAME
At least twice here....
I can't explain it... I still watch it, 5 years later...
I've been fan of this guy since 2010, I was 15 when I've discovered him and it totally changed my life. I purposly don't listen to Bon Iver for some month and come back to it's music then, and it feels like rediscovering it again and again. I'm so happy that this band exists, it changed my relation to music.
I don’t know if i would be able to stop listening to Bon Iver for months..
KILLED it at 5:45-5:52.
Shoutout to NPR for recording this. Thank you.
Chills every time. Absolutely transcendent.
Ditto on the chills. They truly nailed that transition with technical skill AND emotion. Just powerful.
YES. The first time I heard it, I was so blown away I even had tears welling up. Incredible.
That version of Minnesota, WI should be recorded and released as a single. It is absolutely amazing!
I can't stop coming back to this.
If I could only listen to one concert for the rest of my life it’d be this one.
Bon Iver albums are a journey, always having a beautiful destination to arrive at, "Re: Stacks", "Beth/Rest" and now "00000 Million". In a world of 'just hit random', JV still crafts albums (and shows) as stories. Beautiful.
Agreed - true artistry.
This changed my perspective on the entire album in a beautiful way. :)
Who’s here in 2022 and still VIBING?
I come back to this literally every couple months, it’s just that good
It’s starting to show that Bon Iver is the one of the most excellent bands of this new alternative rock generation
probably the only live concert i keep returning to. the acoustics, the mixing, the band *vibing* and the mass of the lyrics and poly-instrumental collaboration. it's a 10/10 and should be 10x the listeners. our 'lil secret i suppose ;)
Can’t tell you how many times I watched this the past 7 years. Def in my fav top 10 live performances of any artist
This right here is the worlds greatest roller coaster.
