    The original already has some pretty outstanding dramatic moments as it is: such as when Will finds out Carlton is carrying a gun and when Will’s dad walks out - these moments were made more effective by the fact they were in a show that was predominantly a light hearted comedy.

      I agree but the Bel-air depicts the culture era that we're living in now rather then copy or be like the sitcom. Its the realistic aspect of the show in which how Will settles in to the new environment.

    Here’s the thing. The original sitcom was a comedy, but when it wanted to go heavy it went heavy, and you believed them because you loved the characters. The reboot is banking on the fact you love these character, while also being a Dynasty/Empire clone at the same time.

      No way you compared this to dynasty or empire. This is literally all american but a little bit different. The show is good. You guys just have to stop thinking of it in terms of the original. It's literally a reboot. It just takes established stuff in the og and changes it. Maybe if you guys weren't nostalgic bastards trying to remember the joy of your childhood you could sit down and enjoy the show

    • @corvistein9016

      @@annisaddo8163 But that will always be the case of a reboot. Because it has things established for it people will compare it to the other. This show may want to explore and change the characters to more fit the story they want to tell (and thats fine. though I am not a big fan of doing that) but these are still pre-established characters of a beloved franchise. So I don't think it's unjustified to be like " hey this has a different vibe then fresh prince" and be a little thrown off by it.

    • @ButterflyScarlet
      @ButterflyScarlet 2 года назад +91

      @@annisaddo8163 That's literally not possible? If you make a reboot of something, as long as fans of the original are still alive, it will be compared to the original. That's how all reboots are. People aren't 'nostalgic bastards' (defensive much?) for being critical of a reboot.

    • @GummyDinosaursify
      @GummyDinosaursify 2 года назад +51

      @@annisaddo8163 If they wanted to do their own thing, why make it a remake at all? Why not a reboot of the series with different characters instead of just remaking the show, only into a gritty drama instead of a comedy-drama? Obviously it's going to be compared to the original. The entire marketing of the show is banking on the original's existence and fanbase to succeed. It's a nostalgia cash grab, not something trying to be unique or original. They should have just made their own show.

    What made the original show so special, was the dynamic between Carlton and Will. They didn't always see eye to eye on many things. Carlton was stuck-up, he did think he was better than Will, and conversely, Will thought he was better than Carlton. Neither of them knew how to meet in the middle at first. As the show goes on, they do become very close and defensive of each other. In this "reboot", Will and Carlton are fighting over a woman. Because he sounds to me like another of a million young white men in this country who think that white men are the most mistreated, discriminated against group around, and see everything that doesn't have an all-white cast and show the white male protagonist as an amazing human being as "anti-white narrative".
      And if he is black, then what's he worrying about so much how white people are portrayed in one show on Peacock? If they're portrayed badly in this one show, well, there are about a million pieces of media where black people are portrayed badly to balance it out. It seems like he'd know that.

    I feel like a lot of you in the comments are missing that the show is inspired (and I think actually co produced) by someone who made a "fake trailer" of the fresh prince in a more realistic tone. Will Smith got wind of it and loved the idea. Now a few years later Bel air is a reality. I haven't seen much of the new show yet but I know it's expanding the fresh prince universe not remaking the original shot for shot. Most parents aren't going to send their children to the other side of the country to move in with relatives that they aren't really close with over a schoolyard fight. The fact Will's life was in extreme danger makes the move to California make sense. Like it'll set up a conflict only to take the shortest path of least resistance to resolve it (often offscreen). Or, it's petty bullshit inflated to melodrama.
    For example, this Hilary is antithetical to the OG besides being drop dead gorgeous. Yet, the Banks parents treat her like, "Whatever are we going to do with this charming, driven, social media savvy and demonstrably talented burden?" Y'all rich! Plus I feel like if it was a reboot I think the characters should have similar personalities but no, Hilary went from being a spoiled snob to being a determined queen who will work hard for what she wants, Carlton went from being the smart, nerdy type to being popular, a drug addict and to be honest a straight asshole. I think what bothers me about this series is that it almost exists as if to imply that the comedic elements in the original Fresh Prince aren't as deserving of merit and value, and that in spite of its key dramatic points, it's never going to be as "deep" as whatever this reboot is trying to be. And that's totally not true. The real nuance of comedy, especially in a show like Fresh Prince, was to capture that balance of using humor to shed light to the darker aspects of the story - Will feeling abandoned by his father, not fitting in with society, and becoming more self-aware of the social and racial pressures at play. The comedy in that series IS what made those dramatic elements shine because they hit you right where you needed it to get the message.
    Maybe it is true that some people will stereotype a comedy show for never going as deep as a dramatic one, but this reboot is a good example of why this doesn't work. A lot of reboots have been doing this lately as if they're ashamed of their original source rather than honoring them. The drama here is too well-constructed and overly polished because they've tried to fill and connect all those holes from the original. It almost reads like fanfiction to me, like when someone's spent a lot of time trying so hard to refine it that they've forgotten the essence of what made the original good and capable of sharing a relevant story when it did.
    That being said - I really wish more shows could feel comfortable about telling a completely new story. There's elements here that could make a compelling story if they'd focused on telling an original one instead to avoid comparing it to its source material.

    • @15thCrypt
      @15thCrypt 2 года назад +15

      The main reason for that is when that dramatic version of fresh prince was still a small piece of fan work got popular they werent thinking about making points or anything but just thought "hey we can use this to create some 'brand new' show with an old shows name to back it up" and that was pretty much it. From the trailer and this video whenever I see conflic (particularly Carlton scenes) I cant take it seriously, not even because "oh its Cartlon he shouldnt be serious" but because nothing feels like real drama. It does not help that Wills character was kept the same so he is a 90s clownish character in a 2020s dramatic world (it feels hard to believe he was well liked in his town and people didnt think he was fake or just an idiot that no one shuts up). If the company took the concept then made it its own show with new characters and differently named characters it would do ok first season, maybe get a second season, then probably drop it before a 3rd. So being an original show would help sure but even alone I doubt it would go far

But I kinda liked the change in tone, it definitely adds a twist especially with it being so modern. I tend to not like shows nowadays because of how much they try to represent society these days idk it always manages to cringe me out but this show just has the perfect ratio in my eyes of not being too cringe to serious.

I also wanna say that I didn’t really watch fresh prince back when it was on air (I was a child that cared about Disney channel, Nick and nothing else lol) however I did watch every single episode on RUclips back in like 2007 or something so I became a fan then. This was probably the only reboot I actually was excited for because it’s based on a reimagined trailer a fan made a few years back that fresh prince fans actually liked and wanted more of. The series is worth a watch in my opinion. The updated version is kind of refreshing to see and unlike these other reboots, people actually wanted this one lol

      When they sat down and planned the show, I wondered who they thought the show would be for? Millenials, gen x, or baby boomers (bc those are all the generations that watched and loved the show)? ...while watching it I figured that the show writers decided it had to be for an even younger generation, one that wouldn't make too many connections to the past show.
      What I wish is that we were just given a brand new show from the mind of Will Smith that didn't need to be stuck in the confines of the Fresh Prince world. What is so wrong with writing brand-new shows?

Granted, this was just a random idea on the internet, so of course a random producer couldn't credit it properly, but man,, if we had to have ANYTHING tied to the original property, I'd love for it to be that. @kaldurskipper6821 2 года назад +1

      @@blueiris574 Yeah, that's right. Really, I'd go so far as to say we don't need any new shows right now that have a person of color and just focus on the fact that the person is. Might be weird, but it makes me think of the CW superhero shows as well as the Marvel ones. You have The Flash and The Punisher and they just get to be awesome and fight crime as stars. When it came to Supergirl, Jessica Jones, Black Lightning, and Luke Cage, such a giant part of the shows (to me) seemed to be their gender or race. That's annoying. I don't need to be reminded of what I can clearly see. All that's really needed is a well-written character in a well-written plot. If they can't have an identity besides their appearance, that's a pretty weak character to me. Plus, it makes it seem like that's all you can do. "Black Lightning can't have a show just about stopping meta humans like Flash because he's of color and he's got to deal with gangs and racism like people of color do"😂 I'm not saying ignore the problems entirely, bit plenty of shows have already addressed them very obviously. I doubt anybody would be hurt if a show came around and just was great without having to rely on something like that

I’m from SW Philly and very much the same as Will but if you compare original birth than new generations (imported city dwellers) is vastly different. Philly isn’t like it was pre-2000s when both me and Will remembers and lived. We both were other places in the last 20 years eventho I came back for 15 of those years.
