@@MS-jp3op M: You misunderstand what I said. Oh wah, as if a call in show is even comparable to someone cornering somebody else in a place they can't leave. M: That is not the point. The point is Matt is staking out a little ground on the internet and pitching it as a grand conflict of 'religion' versus atheism, when what it mostly boils down to is replicating the same tired arguments that more sophisticated theologians, atheists, philosophers, historians, and generally perceptive people with better things to do have moved beyond since about, say, Hegel. Matt's been around long enough not to have an excuse on this point. He's just camping out in the same place he started with (fundamentalist Christianity) save with a switch from 'yes' to 'no' on certain trivial questions. He does it because he's driven by the same things his fundamentalist opponents are. They're two sides of the same coin and so he seeks them out just as they seek him out, all the while pretending this kind of stuff does impressionable yet ignorant youth any great amount of service. Taking cheap shots at a complex historical tradition with a whole host of unspoken assumptions and framing devices is pretty much like being a playground bully, and the attitude of the people who avidly follow the show with little in the way of intellectual growth is the best proof of that. @@RickReasonnz I agree with you somewhat...however it does produce some interesting squirm-dialogue with theist callers. @1:40:16 Thanks for sharing all that Matt, I hope you break that segment out into it's own video, "Matt Shares His Thoughts on the Show" or something like that. So glad you look at the show in the way you do, I've learned so much from it in the last 3 years and can't thank you enough for that.
The only plan of attack from the godless is, "There are problems with the Bible" and then come 4 hours of Bible ping-pong from a person who can't articulate any of the main themes of the Bible. "Jesus told his followers they must hate their parents."
There's one verse I'd like to point out, as formatted in my bible: Exodus 27:1 And thou shalt make an altar of shit- -tim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof three cubits. Formatting is important.
@@danielcox1426 so stuff from bible, that contradicts "theme" (as you understand it), can be ignored? why do you need that book at all,if you already know "the theme"? why are people encouraging others to "read the bible for yourself", if what is in it doesn't really matter that much?
Fortunately they are pretty thin on the ground here. I don’t really know anyone, personally, who is religious. I know they are out there but they usually keep it to themselves.
@Cpl Hicks . As an Aussie, my friends/neighbours are always asking me why I bother commenting to these theists. To the vast majority of Australians, the subject of religion is not worthy of a second thought. It’s just a word that most have no interest in.
I watched one a few weeks ago where there really was a caller who was getting extra credit in an apologetics class for calling in. Sorry if you were referencing this, but I thought it would be a good idea to note for anyone who didn't know that that this is a real thing that happens, and that the discussion was one of the better ones. Matt & co. were nice and went through all of the caller's points and such, and although the caller basically embarrassed himself, they didn't rub it in or anything.
Avishi: I'm gonna claim that every time it says slavery, owning, forever,... those are all mistranslations. What evidence do you have to support that? Crickets.
For Connor and those “projectors” who try to absolve their behaviour by saying “everyone is the same, all men have a religion “ NO MY MEN, there’s a big thing that atheists don’t have and don’t need and that’s FAITH. All religious people run to faith to justify a belief in the absence of reasons and against other beliefs. Atheist don’t need that, they just need facts, data and evidence to decide what right and what’s wrong.
It seems like it's about poisoning the well to make his belief seem more reasonable, when really it would just make atheism less reasonable if he was right that it takes faith

I brought up the "copies of copies" argument with the Monsignor at the monastery I worked at, making copies of really old texts. He said I was right and went to "check the originals". He was gone for hours, not uncommon, but when he missed dinner, we went to look for him. We found him, deep in the catacombs (where the old texts were kept), as we approached we heard blood-curdling screams and smashing glass and tearing paper. We ran in, horrified to find him ripping his clothes and clawing at his face. "THE WORD IS CELEBRATE", he screamed.
Note to theists , Plenty of Non believers have had so called supernatural or mystical experiences. Weird, strange, awesome, unexplainable, bizarrely unusual things happen to all sorts of people. Its just that not everyone jumps to conclusions that feed into their personal religious bias. And some of these unusual things are eventually explained . Often simply as mistaken conclusions. Our senses as great as they may be are far from perfect.
Prove that they are spiritual or mystical, oops, you can’t. Up to today, not one single supernatural event, something that exists outside the natural world has ever been shown to be possible. Zero, zilch. Yes there are weird, unexplained things that can happen, if they can’t be explained, that’s it. You cannot go any further. And any time I hear the term spiritual, just like, prayer, miracles etc, I want to toss my lunch.

To the man with the Broken back, many people say "Broken" when they have a fracture: a small crack. If he had 5 cracks in his back he should have had no trouble walking once the pain was under control If however the back bone is severed through then the body would not have the strength to hold itself up with out assistance of some sort, or time to heal it. Any historical data on what's the time record for Matt saying something back right after he said he was just going to listen and only Say something when he can't handle it anymore?
A day or two ago I saw a video review of a recent PureFlix movie called Faith Under Fire and I posted a comment mentioning Matts's famous quote about Faith is the excuse one gives when they have no evidence. Not surprising that I got a comment from a Theist and they said this - "That's the point. If God was in your face, it would take away the ability to choose to believe. Religion is about how you focus your spirit, your energy. Faith is evidence to self of that which is unseen. Faith is an individual choice." And my response to that comment. - "Faith is an individual choice. It's funny that you say that cause pretty much every Religion says you must believe in this specific Religion and if you don't you will get punished forever. Yeah, that is the equivalent of someone asking you to choose to believe in A or B and if you choose B they'll get to punch you in the face (over and over again)... that isn't much of an individuals choice when your threaten to choose one over the other." So far didn't get a reply yet.
Good points for sure. It's also important to note, that supposedly Satan decided to rebel, even knowing God face to face. So it's not like having evidence would be the "free will sucking" thing theists make it out to be. Also faith can be used to believe in literally anything. People believe in whatever they want. Faith is all someone needs to believe in something. So yeah. That's about it.
As an Aussie, I totally agree. Thankfully these gullible fools are fairly rare here. We sent most of them your way.....................sorry about that!

Good show. A bit retro but those were fun. "Answer the question". Perhaps what theists fear more than hell, their indoctrinated beliefs threatened by personal reflection, critical thinking.
Religious books are just books. They may contain wisdom or not. I think It's a mistake that religious people make to put these books on such high pedestals. Truth is always in the now, your current experience, not in what you believe in or what you hold on to.

Matt: "I'm gonna shut up now." *Talks for next 5 minutes* 😂 I love the man, but he needs a "shut up hat" or something he can put on to remind himself when he says he's gonna do just that. This episode in particular suffered from a lack of Jim.

As soon as the second caller hit the "blind assumption about reality" bit, my internal "Oh no, some student has read the works of Berkeley for the first time and actually bought into that nonsense" alarm went off.
Way back in my day we termed it”the quantum foam”. The (apparent) ground state of space-time. And it really appears as if you can get particles spontaneously appearing.
The key word here is "appear". Fact is we don't have a complete answer for the sudden appearence of virtual particules. There's something we still missing here. (To be clear, i'm not appealing to supernatural explanations. We just don't fully know)
There are few competing ideas out there, Rob. One is Hawking and Hartle’s conjecture about time in time-space is interesting. Here, we regress geometrically the universe back to its origins, where time emerges from a fourth dimension of pure space. Owing to the geometric architecture of the universe, there is no definitive point of origin. From our referential frame the universe comes something from nothing. No gods need apply. Fluctuating virtual particles I think would apply to an established universe. For space-time to be a ground state from QM fluctuations, would there need to be some form consistency to explain reliability of General Relativity? No point in space-time having preference and the predictive power of Lorentz Transformations, for example.
There have been a lot of wacky callers today and I am so glad we had someone like Sammy to bring us back to reality with his sound reasoning and his incredible ability to distinguish fact from fiction. It was refreshing.
If only all the theists who are completely convinced of an afterlife would simply take the actual steps to prove their convictions, the world would be a much more rational place.
@Kevin S So standing by your convictions arent Christian values but making things up about people you know nothing about are? Ok thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind.
@Fernando Scasioso I mean, you're not wrong. Your statement has little in common with Bellza's statement. Their statement didn't even imply that meaning of theist.
@Fernando Scasioso As Jasmine stated above. Thats not what I said or implied. For all their afterlife claims religious people often live in an unbalanced fear of death. Many will claim conviction of religions tenets but dont live that way. We all know Christians who live in fear and anxiety about anything they dont understand. Instead of the peace l,ove, and joy their messiah has said he would give them.
@Fernando Scasioso Theism is the belief there is a god Christians are told in their Bible too give a reason for their beliefs Besides that you would have to have a reason to believe it or you wouldn’t be in the comment section arguing lookin a fool Weak bait
If it was a “mistranslation”...why haven’t we changed it to the correct translation of “possession” to whatever he thinks it was supposed to mean. I’m sure his many years of translating ancient text to English will make the Christian churches of the world change it. Seriously. This book has had thousands years of eyes on them and no one thought they didn’t mean humans were enslaved. No one changed it because they knew people were slaves and they knew what the authors meant by a human being possessions. Ugh.
My question would be: if it was a "mistranslation" how did you figured out the "actual" translation? and if you can demonstratethat, why havent you fix it? that would solve a HUGE problem on christianity.
Every time a caller claims that God healed them miraculously, I expect for Matt to ask how did they rule out the fact that they might have superpowers. He never does :(
This guy lives a half hour away from Matt's studios, and they never had him on. Out of the Silence by Duane Miller "Not only are you okay," he said, "but I can't find any evidence that you ever had a voice problem!" He sat down and looked at me, amazed. "Even if I could explain how you got your voice back by coincidence -- which I can't -- I could never explain what happened to the scar tissue." He sighed. "Scar tissue _never_ disappears. It just never happens!" This physician, a nonbeliever so far as I know, was so impressed that he eventually obtained hundreds of copies of the audiotape of when the healing occurred and sent them out to his friends and colleagues with a letter that said, "Look, we hear about these types of cases all the time, but I'm telling you, I witnessed this one, I have the test evidence. This one is _real."_ My doctor writes textbooks for medical schools. He specializes in neurology as it relates to speech -- and he personally verified the miracle with the most prestigious of his colleagues. p. 144
And why hasn't there been a New, New Testament? If his can see the future why no mention of space travel, the other planets, airplanes, cars, medicine, etc.? Why would god let scientists name HIS planets? He created them right? 2000 years of human history and no updates? He felt the need to update the Old Testament, right? 🤣😂

M: You misunderstand what I said.
If you come to the arena and you're not ready to battle, that's your own fault.
M: And when you stay in your crib and pretend you're operating in the real world, that's also your own fault.
In a discussion the only person that can make you look inept is yourself,
M: You may come to regret that statement.
if the callers had better arguments they wouldn't get trounced so easily.
M: Quite true, but ultimately irrelevant.

Not surprising that I got a comment from a Theist and they said this - "That's the point. If God was in your face, it would take away the ability to choose to believe. Religion is about how you focus your spirit, your energy. Faith is evidence to self of that which is unseen. Faith is an individual choice."
And my response to that comment. - "Faith is an individual choice. It's funny that you say that cause pretty much every Religion says you must believe in this specific Religion and if you don't you will get punished forever. Yeah, that is the equivalent of someone asking you to choose to believe in A or B and if you choose B they'll get to punch you in the face (over and over again)... that isn't much of an individuals choice when your threaten to choose one over the other."

Many will claim conviction of religions tenets but dont live that way. We all know Christians who live in fear and anxiety about anything they dont understand. Instead of the peace l,ove, and joy their messiah has said he would give them.

Are they ever not?
Thanks Dark Roast
As an Australian, I would like to apologise for Philip.
I’d like to smack him in the head.
Ditto.
Hey, we all have our fools. They don't represent us. As a South African, I need to believe that lol
Always love these videos thank you AE🔥🔥🔥
Every time a caller claims that God healed them miraculously, I expect for Matt to ask how did they rule out the fact that they might have superpowers. He never does :(
This guy lives a half hour away from Matt's studios, and they never had him on.
Out of the Silence by Duane Miller
"Not only are you okay," he said, "but I can't find any evidence that you ever had a voice problem!"
He sat down and looked at me, amazed. "Even if I could explain how you got your voice back by coincidence -- which I can't -- I could never explain what happened to the scar tissue." He sighed. "Scar tissue _never_ disappears. It just never happens!"
This physician, a nonbeliever so far as I know, was so impressed that he eventually obtained hundreds of copies of the audiotape of when the healing occurred and sent them out to his friends and colleagues with a letter that said, "Look, we hear about these types of cases all the time, but I'm telling you, I witnessed this one, I have the test evidence. This one is _real."_
My doctor writes textbooks for medical schools. He specializes in neurology as it relates to speech -- and he personally verified the miracle with the most prestigious of his colleagues.

@@danielcox1426 Ah, “the some guy wrote a book and it sounds legit to me” argument. 🤦♂️
Matt is an essential worker over any preacher I have ever listen too.
Matt is always calmer when Shannon Qs on. She must have a soothing influence on him.
This show is a metaphor for my life since last Thanksgiving.
Dang Matt...okay Jim, you take it from here..2 mins later, I’m taking over again..lol.
Yes or no has never looked so difficult.
I really wish he would ban questions about slavery at this point. It's been covered on this show.
"Philip" sounded very familiar
Not 1 theist had anything new.
Guess they need a new new testament
testament 0: the testifining
coming to a pew near you
And why hasn't there been a New, New Testament? If his can see the future why no mention of space travel, the other planets, airplanes, cars, medicine, etc.? Why would god let scientists name HIS planets? He created them right? 2000 years of human history and no updates? He felt the need to update the Old Testament, right? 🤣😂
@@jasonsabbath6996 Same reason their god sits around waiting for human scientists to create cures for diseases. No loving god would let children die of cancer.
holy shit!.. the watchmaker argument??.. really??.. LOL this episode is epic! 😂
My mother broke her back and neck, didn't know how serious it was. So she walked to the ambulance and she's an atheist. As long as the nerves aren't severed it happens. And it doesn't even happen to theist .000000000001% more.
I just realized every time a Christian says "...mysterious ways" that's the point where they would've deconverted if they were pragmatic and rational.
