Is there already a psychological term for Kevin’s stunning method of wrapping every claim in a flood of personal excuses to invalidate criticism before it is even made?
@Your Greatest Ally Yes and no. If we get a caller and we can tell there is clear mental illness or obvious substance usage going on then we don't let them on the show cause lets face it, we're not licensed therapists and even if we were we couldn't really help someone with a 5-10 minute phone call. But we don't have any problem with someone who is just unusual or weird as long as its going to be interesting. Take Justin from this episode, when I first started screening him I was going to pass cause he was just rambling about "Brain prints" and how they proved the Bible, I didn't see much of a connection there and he didn't seem to have really thought it out very clearly. So I started digging a little deeper and he started telling me how the "Brain prints" changed depending on demonic possession and that's when I knew he HAD to get on the show. The main thing we're looking for from every caller is that they be memorable, that they get a reaction. We just don't want the call to end and the viewers to say, "Meh, what's next". If it's because the call was insightful, heart wrenching, heart warming, infuriating or hilarious doesn't really matter, in fact we want a good selection of each on every episode.

ray salmon No sir, you are completely wrong. I am neither “indoctinated” or indeed indoctrinated. What “common sense” do I not recognise? I tell you what I do recognise, that your comment lacks any punctuation and any meaningful message whatsoever.
If you didn't realise Lloyd was British from his accent alone, the high level of sarcasm is further evidence. It's a good counterbalance to Matt's style, as sometimes his co-hosts can fade into the background.
Christopher Howarth Yes, I think he is probably the best co host I have seen with Matt. He holds his own and adds something, rather than just being a yes man/woman. There are others that do a good job too, but he ranks highly among them.
I know I’m rather late to this party, but I totally agree. As a fellow Brit, I know that we’re good at very dry humour and sarcasm, which works very well for these sorts of conversations. It’s also good for helping Matt keep his zen during the more “challenging” callers. lol

Kevin - You were nervous because it was a bad argument, and you know that deep down, its why you kept pre-ambling and talking about how Matt is so good at what he does...All he does is apply logic and reason to statements in a consistent way, its not magic.
Douglas: here's your modal logic proof that unicorns exist. P1) I am imagining a unicorn P2) It is possible that my imagined unicorn exists separately from myself C1) My imagination is distinct from myself (same logic you used to try to demonstrate a soul!) C2) A unicorn exists as a distinct entity outside myself (deduction from P1 and C1) C3) Unicorns exist (deduction from P1 and C2) You can prove pretty much anything with modal logic
Ben Roberts....the problem with that argument, and that same type of argument for a god, is that imagining something doesn’t make it a possibility. In order for something to be a possibility, an impossibility needs to be ruled out first. Theists often try to use these philosophical arguments with one of the three parts of the argument being flawed, and that’s usually done by using word games to try and create the illusion of possibility. They have never elevated their god to “possible” status. They’ve only gotten their god to conceptually plausible, but as you pointed out, unicorns are also conceptually plausible.

Really enjoyed the approach in this episode. The long calls are really only good if all parties are being honest, clear, and kind to each other. I’m not saying that the theists getting destroyed isn’t entertaining or valuable, but there’s no need to drag those calls out. A lot of theist callers seem to want to tell a story rather than make a case. They need to hold to some kind of structure and be consistent with word use. I love watching the hosts get tough with respect to both of those. Good job guys. And Lloyd’s voice is friggin butter.
You can't have an intense conversation while driving. You just alternate between being a bad conversationalist and a bad driver. There was a study about this....in Time magazine 😜
When matt explained to Sebastian his rationale about his engagement with the callers, that literally gave me 11 yrs of understanding of Matt. I didn't realize how adept Matt is quickly picking up error in logic nor that was his purpose with callers, to quickly end any erroneous reasoning. I think I understand more of Matt.
As with the last time Lloyd was the guest host, great show! I'm reminded of Lloyd's comment at the end of the show last time about the "onslaught of nutters".

Patience. It's an interesting thing. Once upon a time, I had the patience to hear out to all these callers and listen to their waffle. Now, I'm loving the time stamps in the description, because like the more regular hosts, I've heard it all before and joyfully skip forward to the next caller when the "if...but...I think... maybe.. but you can't.... and then if....erh erh um......." bullshit starts. I think it's why I still spend more time listening to the AXP over Talk Heathen or Godless Bitches; not that they're not great shows: they are. But the AXP has evolved over two decades, and that's reflected in the hosts' responses. So long as the religious fundy machine keeps churning out new converts who think Pascal's wager is a current argument, there will be a need for Julie Andrews style 'Doe Re Mi' shows. But like any good show, the AXP has evolved over two decades and now does something different than it used to. So Matt..... keep using that 'drop call' button and let the new shows bring it back to 'doe'.
I agree, I seem to be getting more impatient, I listen to these at 1.5x normal speed (hit shift+> twice) just so they get to the point quicker. I can't listen to Eric on talk heathen because he is so glacially slow, he even takes forever to interrupt a caller (Matt says "stop, stop! STOP!!!" Eric says "john................... john........................... john.................................... john................" and then spends ages making sure no feathers were ruffled in the interruption. I think both shows would benefit from getting the caller to present a summary of their argument in one or two sentences at the start, otherwise half an hour can be wasted in agreeing on definitions or in hearing detailed back-stories and *finally* it turns out that "look at the trees" or whatever is all they have.
@@grantm6514 on the other shows the hosts don't listen properly to the callers either , and don't get the point of what the callers are trying to say , i guess that's why it's called the atheist ''experience'' , they have a lot more of it ... and yes Eric is so slow and way to polite , even though he's been doing it for a while now ... i've heard almost 600 shows of the atheist experience , so i have some too now , the other shows do it differently , but are boring really these religious people NEED to be spoken like Matt speaks to them , or it just flies by the minds of these fools and doesn't have ANY impact ... Matt knows this and is sick of these fools as much as we all are ... religion needs to GO and lively , be destroyed , be put out of history , made HISTORY the world has suffered enough from all this total bullshit
Dave was right If their argument is slavery isn't moral ANYMORE and they have already acknowledged that slavery isn't moral NOW, then they can't say they would enslave someone now. They can't claim to be moral AND agree to enslave someone today if theyve already said it isnt. Both questions work to expose a different aspect of their flawed outlook
😂 I flew off my roof when I was a kid. I didn't fly for long as it turns out I am in fact not Superman but for a moment I felt like I could! Also I piled up a bunch of leaves to land in because even when I was that young I knew Superman was just a story.
Matt and all your coworkers. It Isa pleasure to listen to your answers. I felt alone for a long time feeling others didn’t see my point of view of Religions. Now I see other intelligent individuals whom were religious in the past just like I was seeing what I have been seeing.
Okay, I missed the show this week. Now to sit back with a cup of coffee and watch the recording. How many callers we have this time? *Sees 14 callers timestamped* This is going to be fun.
I actually like that question "would you enslave me". Because it either exposes them as bad people or forces them to acknowledge the bible isn't morally good.
What have most of these callers been smoking? The total lack of logic was mind blowing. Preconceived assumptions and bumbling blundering without even comprehending they need proof to win the case.
Sure. The "_____" (fill in the bkank with your religion of choice) are all repeatedly taught, trained, indoctrinated, accepted, supported, fellowshipped with and more with people who are specially chosen who all share the pure and special "truth," and everyone else is sadly wrong.
I love hearing callers say the show helped them re-think and re- assess their reality. Hearing that a human shifted his/her thinking in this way, is proof we can in fact, survive the worst of ourselves.
1:45:00 When Matt and Lloyd make their killer points you can literally hear the "ping!!" as the bullet ricochets off the caller's armor of irrationality. It's literally like points and ideas other than those the caller already holds don't penetrate.
thank matt, keep doing your show, I really love it, I'm a new atheist ..you are helping a lot, you can't imagine.. you are the best... from montreal....a la prochain
One hour and 23 minutes have passed and there's not been one caller whose ideas weren't bat shit crazy. None of them had a coherent thought, or could tie two thoughts together. Lloyd and Matt have more patience with callers than I imagined possible.
Did anyone catch that Kevin in the beginning said he was a JW and then later on Lloyd defended god in the sense of Christianity, and then Kevin said he grew up in a very fundamentalist Christian household….
Maybe Kevin should stop reading his cue cards and try to use reasoning for his argument. He gets snotty with the screen caller and then his argument falls apart proving him an idiot.
Kevin here, funny enough I did not prepare my argument and I think that was my mistake. I tried to wing it and go off of the top of my head and I just got myself tangled up In logical knots. I understand why people were annoyed.
UCLAdrummer Good on you for even trying. I hope you write down the points you want to hit for next time or maybe get some practice so you aren’t nervous next time.
UCLAdrummer Not everyone, including myself, can wing it with coherent points in a stressful situation such as a live call without a great deal of preparation. I give you a great deal of credit for trying. It’s easy for people to criticise from behind their keyboard but don’t give up and in the future marshal your facts and have notes at the ready. Whilst I am an atheist it is important for all of us to hear contrary arguments so we do not live in a bubble. Better luck next time.
@@UCLAdrummer Kevin if you are going to engage someone like Matt you'd better be much better prepared. I've taught public speaking and debate and you do not have the skills to even compete. I'm not trying to be cruel but that is the truth. Plus the arguments you were trying to use do not hold up.
I once tried to explain to a fundie that of course the people writing the NT knew the OT well and wrote about Jesus to fit those OT prophecies. He could not grasp what I meant even tough I mapped it out for him several times, finally as if I were explaining it to a toddler. It’s not that he rejected my very simple point; but that it never penetrated the outer casing of faith that surrounded his skull. I find that more horrifying than if he just automatically said I was wrong.

Similar to Nathan. I married my wife knowing she was Christian-ish. I told her if she wanted to go to church, I'd go. I've even gone to church before to be there to support my friends previously. Listening to many arguments over time she has understood why the Christian God is not possible.
Having an argument about the existence of god with Matt Dillahunty, while driving a truck, really is asking for trouble. A hands-free set doesn't stop your mind from wandering from the important task of driving safely.
@Nil Hisit No, having a complicated discussion with someone while driving will decrease your attention on the traffic, which increases the risk of an accident. It's perfectly reasonable to avoid such conversations while driving.

Hey guys, this is Kevin (AZ) from the call. I recognize that I was unable to string together solid arguments and I wasted a lot of time talking about being nervous. I'm pretty terrible at public speaking and I have almost no experience in these types of debates. I think I will prepare better and call back in a couple of weeks or so.
@TickerTaallick I hear where you're coming from, but the reality is I was not dodging the question. I was still a little bit shell-shocked by having my premises immediately shutdown. I honestly didn't really understand the question. I also would like to acknowledge that I have no bones about admitting that I lost the debate.
@TickerTaallick that's a great point. I agree that I should test my ideas with friends in order to understand strengths and weaknesses of my own arguments.
What can make you overcome things you are 'terrible' at are Preparation and Practice. Don't feel too bad, the vast majority of callers to the ACA shows neglect to do that too.
Good luck! I know Matt seems quite impatient and intimidating, just imagine you’ve been doing his job for over a decade and have heard it all before. I’d probably be the same.
Have you ever thought of articulating your arguments here? I know there are a lot of shitheads (like me sometimes : ) but if you were to articulate your argument and ask whether your reasoning is sound or not, there are plenty of people who would walk you through any problems they see. I've had some great conversations online that were able to show flaws in my logic.

Why would a theist come on to this show if they are just being treated with contempt? I'm an atheist by the way.

We all love you

Douglas: here's your modal logic proof that unicorns exist.
P1) I am imagining a unicorn
P2) It is possible that my imagined unicorn exists separately from myself
C1) My imagination is distinct from myself (same logic you used to try to demonstrate a soul!)
C2) A unicorn exists as a distinct entity outside myself (deduction from P1 and C1)
C3) Unicorns exist (deduction from P1 and C2)
You can prove pretty much anything with modal logic
Ben Roberts....the problem with that argument, and that same type of argument for a god, is that imagining something doesn’t make it a possibility. In order for something to be a possibility, an impossibility needs to be ruled out first.
Theists often try to use these philosophical arguments with one of the three parts of the argument being flawed, and that’s usually done by using word games to try and create the illusion of possibility. They have never elevated their god to “possible” status. They’ve only gotten their god to conceptually plausible, but as you pointed out, unicorns are also conceptually plausible.
So unicorns are real, I knew it!
When a Person Falls from Grace
When a person chooses to deny the faith that they once had they depart from God, and fall from grace. This causes their soul to, once again, take on death since they have left the source of life. The Holy Ghost is no longer in communion with their soul.
There are many verses which speak of the Holy Spirit as being a seal that preserves us. It is called the earnest of our inheritance. This means as long as the Holy Spirit is within us, breathing life into our souls, we are protected from death.
Again, God will not forsake us. But, He will not imprison us either. If we forsake Him then He will not force us to remain with Him. He will let us walk away

John Cedars (James Lloyd Evans) He is a narcissist who admits to having a sex addiction and a skewed perspective of women. and in fact is using fear tactics by sending letters to his former "followers" containing threats of litigation and attempting to extort thousands of dollars from them, simply because of them voicing their opinions on his admission to regular use of prostitutes and infidelity, whilst travelling the world and most recently Thailand, using his patreons donations to do so. An advocate for victims of CSA and sexual mistreatment? I think not.
BTW his track record with his wife from years before this show was aired, should actually give him the expectation that his wife is cheating on him. No wonder he wanted to avoid answering your callers question "Do you think your wife is cheating on you"
Love you Lloyd!! so good to see you on the show again :D
I love when Lloyd is on the show. His vibe is awesome.
Theme for this show: "It's possible."

If their argument is slavery isn't moral ANYMORE and they have already acknowledged that slavery isn't moral NOW, then they can't say they would enslave someone now. Having an argument about the existence of god with Matt Dillahunty, while driving a truck, really is asking for trouble. A hands-free set doesn't stop your mind from wandering from the important task of driving safely.
