      I want to recommend a new show for the ACA network. How about a weekly science education show? The show will educate the public on science subjects with special emphasis on those areas where theists tend to misuse science to prove the existence of God, e.g. the law of thermodynamics, quantum physics, DNA, etc. The format can be: first 30 minutes is an educational presentation about a particular science subject and how theists often misuse it as evidence for God (if pertinent). The rest of the show you would entertain calls for those who have questions on the subject and for those who wish to point to any other fact of science that serves as evidence of God.
      I think this will be hugely beneficial because so many theists are clinging to religion just because they don't really understand evolution and they mistakenly think that a God is the more reasonable explanation for the existence of diverse, complex life showing apparent design. But if they can have evolution explained to them in a simple, understandable way, many of them will have an awakening.

      The thing I think she is trying to get at is:
      To be able to have the time/energy/resources to question your indoctrination, requires an amount of privilege. There are people who are unable to question thier ideology/indoctrination because they don't have the time or resources or ability to "waste" thinking about these things while busily working on seemingly more pragmatic things, like getting rent paid or raising thier children or whatever.

      Kim may not be very articulate, but as someone who grew up in the third world, and been HUNGRY and homeless, I completely get her underlying point. When your intellectual energy is focused on survival, you don't really have time to muse philosophical about whether God/s exist. Material survival trumps everything else. Matt needs anger management. If his goal is to change minds yelling and insulting isn't the best method.

    EVERYONE is capable of believing in god or not. They don't need to read, or say what they believe.

      Yeah if you want proof that atheism isn't another religion as some people try to claim, just realize that unlike religions, it does not require missionaries. There's no specific word that has to be spread and taught. People need only reject claims that don't add up, and they'll end up at atheism regardless of where they are or what culture they're in.
      Now, it is true that if you're raised in a cult or uncontacted tribe or something and someone tells you the moon is the back of God's head or some nonsense and you have nothing to disprove that and minimal consequence for accepting it, yeah you're probably less likely to reject the supernatural claims you hear all the time. And that absolutely scales to everybody's own situation. So yes there are a lot more devout people in areas where rationality is minimized, etc, but the point remains true that the trend of society is towards atheism and there are atheists everywhere.

  • @iconifyme
    @iconifyme 2 года назад +6

    I was initially convinced Kim was nuts with her claim that being atheist is a result of privilege but I actually think she has a point. We are, at least to some degree, products of our environment. Consider a young child growing up in rural Afghanistan who does not have the benefit of an education. No exposure to a liberal arts education. No exposure to the internet. No exposure to any ideas or concepts except what their Imam tells them is true and that their tribe, warlord, and family teach them. It isn't a matter of intelligence, but exposure. Intelligence is the ability to take in new information and synthesize it into novel ideas and applications. That's not what she was saying. She was talking about exposure to new ideas. It would be dishonest to argue that a kid living in the tribal areas of Afghanistan has easy access to new ideas and information that contradicts what they are taught.
    I do believe that having the opportunity to be exposed to a plethora of ideas, counter points, and different philosophies is privilege. While I disagree with EVERYTHING else she said, I do think she has a point about there being an aspect of privilege that allows us to be exposed to those ideas. I think both Matt and Jim were speaking from a very western-centric mindset and assuming that their experience is universal. Of course anyone can explore the possiblity that what they have been taught is not true but even the ideas we have are influenced by the information to which we are exposed. Someone whose entire family and social ties are dependent on sharing a set of views and values is less likely to question those views and values. Yes, it is possible to go through the motions but when there is no motivation to even question then that is unlikely.
    As a matter of fact, Jim and Matt both talked about religion permeating society because the Roman empire even had laws making not being a Christian punishable by death. Jim's exact words were "When you make not believing punishable by death, people have a tendency to believe". Now he may have been implying that they "act as if they believe whether they do or not" but I don't think that is what he meant. I do think being exposed to information that makes it possible to reject the religion into which we are born IS a result of some level of privilege, especially when we know that there are people who do not have that exposure.
    Jim also cited the ease of the spread of information being a result of the internet. As far as I can tell, he is correct. It has never been easier to have access to a mutlitude of ideas. But not everyone has access to the internet, as hard as that is to believe. Again, that is privilege. Living in a society that does not explicitly indoctrinate you into a lifestyle and belief system that includes killing and dying for belief is a privilige.
    Kim was wrong on every other point, but I don't think she was completely off-base on the idea that there is some level of privilege that leads to the possiblity of developing beliefs that reject theism.

    Gilles: you ask what a completely atheistic society would look like.
    Such a thing doesn't exist yet; but all over the UK there are clues as to what one will eventually look like.
    If you see a big building with stained glass windows and a tall spire and it's actually a carpet warehouse or a furniture saleroom, you're seeing signs of a society moving steadily towards secularism.
    If you see any number of small, old, empty churches with 'For Sale' signs outside that also announce that they have planning permission for conversion to flats, that, too, is a sign that religions are giving up the (holy) ghost.
    So is a fine, big , old Victorian church in a city centre that became a nightclub/restaurant fifteen years ago.
    So is a supermarket where a parish church once stood.
    When did you last see a poster displaying one of those hand-painted 'thermometer' signs outside a church, showing how much more was needed to pay for essential maintenance? They disappeared when the red line on the thermometers began regularly to get stuck about a third of the way up.
    The church in which I was baptised, and attended twice on Sundays until the age of twelve, once staged the BBC TV Sunday evening programme Songs of Praise. The church, a Methodist showcase deliberately designed and built to outshine ever other denomination's place of worship for miles around, had been built for a congregation of more than a thousand, with a balcony above the ground floor nave.
    When the cameras arrived, the congregations of five other Methodist churches in the area had been shipped in to boost the attendance.
    On television it looked like a busy and active church; but the cameras lied. So did the BBC. Only one half of the nave was shown, and the empty balcony was carefully ignored.
    I didn't ignore it. Within a few weeks I finally embraced the Atheism I had been exploring for a long time.
    This was in the early 1960s. Even back then, religion was (in)visibly declining.

    • @flowingafterglow629
      @flowingafterglow629 2 года назад

      Absolutely. In fact, I think both their answers to caller Jim really represented athiestic thinking very well. It's a really good understanding of the foundational aspects of what atheism means in practice. When you hear the apologetics clowns attacking the "atheist worldview," they go on about crap like creation and stuff. That's not the atheist worldview. That's orthoganal to the issue. Matt and Jim's discussion of the implications of heaven and hell, and the absence thereof, that's a discussion of atheistic worldview.
      "If you don't believe in God, then who created the universe?"
      "I don't know. That's a science question that we don't have fully worked out. Doesn't change the fact universe exists, so doesn't affect me much."
      "If heaven and hell don't exist, then what does that mean for your life?"
      Now that's an answer worth listening to and thinking about, and you can see that Jim and Matt have thought about it.
      I think Jim's answer was beautiful.

    • @sparrowhawk8539
      @sparrowhawk8539 2 года назад

      Actually he said he was no longer waiting for death. This means he was never afraid of death but that he wasn't enjoying life and was just waiting to die and go to heaven. When he realized this was not the reality he looked at life in a new way. As someone who has lived with suicidal ideation all my life I can empathize a lot with this. It's easy to have a death wish when you think you are going to go to heaven. This is almost torture for a depressed person. The idea that when you die you go to heaven but if you end things yourself you will go to hell is a bit of a mind fuck. Now I get to chose for myself if I want to continue. I live for myself, my loved ones and the community around me now, not just to avoid going to hell. I have a hell of a lot more meaning in my life now that I don't think this is all just a test.

    Just about the odds of Mike experience.
    What are the odds that I passed a specific person on the highway, born in another state who is traveling for the first time?
    VERY UNLIKELY. But it happens all the time.
    Improbable things with "impossible" odds happen at EVERY moment in time. The difference is you chose one specific experience, because it was important in your life (and theirs) and was very unlikely. The mistake was not realizing that unlikely things are everywhere and 99.99999% of these improbable events that happen are mundane & you dont even notice them.
    Did you ever think about the odds of picking up a certain fruit in a grocery store?
    What are the odds of picking up the apple you did?
    Its insanely improbable.
    (The fruit had to be selectively bred by generations of farmers, those farmers had picked that specific plant for its propertys, and then cloned and grafted onto other plants to keep that type of apple. That specific type of apple had to have the properties and marketing that would make it desirable and profitable enough to continue growing and remain a staple for generations, it was then picked from the branch by a specific individual, delivered by a specific company and person, placed on the shelves when you happened to be in that market & then you chose that specific apple out of all the other apples)
    As you can see the improbable argument is meaningless. You can endow impossible odds on just about anything in life if you are specific enough.
    Plus, what about the odds of the unlikely deaths. Falling coconuts kill people. Is that God too?

    and the teacher was telling us that the Constitution guaranties freedom of worship; we can chose to be Muslim, atheist, etc. "But nevertheless, we are all Christians here, aren't we? Rise your hand if you are." (I'm talking about Argentina). Everybody rised their hand but me. The teacher approached me and asked very surprised "What about you?" I said I didn't have any belief in particular; then he asked very upset "But have you been baptised?" - "Yes" - "THEN you are Catholic." - "But I don't believe..." - "It doesn't matter; you are a Catholic." Then I thought, this is funny; the legal national document of the Nation says I can chose, but then again, I can't. -- This is the big dichotomy; On Sunday you are told that if you don't believe in certain god, "you go to hell" (I remember the priest saying so when I was a kid). Then on Monday you are told that you can freely chose... Children may see adults as quite undecided and confusing...

    39% of people in England call themselves non religious, wtf is Kim talking about.
    She is privileged just like me (Belgian) that she lives in a country where you can call yourself atheist and basically the harshest reaction you'll probably get is "meh", compared to fundamentalist USA were you can get shunned for revealing this.
    My best friend is muslim and doesn't come close to the religious fundamentalism that I regularly hear from American christians.
    We generally don't talk that much about religion but when we do we understand that we think differently on that subject and he accepts that I don't believe any of the abrahamic doctrines and I accept he does.
    I am in my early 40's and he is in his late 30's and we've been friends for over 20 years now.

    Holy Rebel: We don't care what the scriptures say, until you can prove that the Bible is true It's just an old book to us. Preaching the Bible to us is not evidence of anything, it's a waste of time.
