Nicolas “weak arguments that some of the other Christians bring to the table....” Like everyone before him that uttered the same line, you just know he’s about to add himself to that list.
Personally, i dont think they were very fair to him. I dont think he was even really trying to have an argument with them, just an open discussion about beliefs and philosophy, and constantly cutting him off, to win an argument he isn't even making, really doesn't sit well with me. Then when matt seems to realize nicholas really isn't trying to argue back, he accuses him of wasting his time. I had thought this show was supposed to be about opening dialogs between theists and atheists, not just about farming bad arguments to refute for entertainment. If thats the kind show they want, then maybe they need a different brand, because i would rather not have people see this and assume the sum total of my experience of being an atheist is arguing with people. dont get me wrong, i have seen some pretty entertaining arguments on this show, and thoroughly enjoyed them, but it feels like there used to be more to the show than just that.
“If you want to hear god, you need to start being like god.” So... commit genocide and demand awful things from people? Set up a universe where billions of people will be tortured eternally? No, thanks.

Yes, I remember it too. Matt misunderstood what Keith was trying to say. Keith was presenting a hypothetical scenario which (if it had occurred) he thought would justify it being called a supernatural event. It wouldn't but Matt never got to explain that to him. It's a pity because they just made him feel silly for the wrong reason. Instead of saying he had "evidence", all he had to say was that this "would" be evidence of the supernatural if it happened etc...
It's weird to say this, but I'm kind of happy that you are doing the show this way, because you've had on some very awesome co-hosts recently ( of course, the regular co-hosts are also awesome).
Not that Matt has never been angry or irritated, of course, everyone has. But I feel that often his deep passion is mistaken for deep anger. When he was telling Lloyd that he should free himself, I felt that. Thanks for the video, guys. I’ve been binging on these during my awakening from the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Very helpful.
@Ernst Stavro Blofeld Jesus Christ! John Wood asked if you had any evidence, or not. Based on your response, we can safely infer that you do not. Simply stating that you have an opinion does not inoculate you from questions. Troll.
Anti-intellectualism seem to go hand-in-hand with religion. a lot of people who believe in religion seem to be bad at geography math history science perhaps out of willful ignorance because facts are in direct contrast to their belief.
Put another way: The more educated people get, the more they see the more common interpretations of religious ideas make no sense at all. One of the biggest things science has on religion, is the willingness among most scientists to admit when their theory is wrong and try a new direction. I can understand someone who walks around believing in God because they want to. I cannot understand people who keep trying to twist facts and reality to fit a belief that clearly isn't based on either concept.
I agree in general, but atheists are not immune to scientific ignorance either. For example, 55:22, matts coin argument, while it works on a classical scale, is not true for reality on the quantum scale. What he is arguing for, in quantum terms would be called "hidden variables" and they were proven not to exist* by a group of experiments known as the bell inequalities. There is a middle ground between existence and non-existence, its called superposition. *Technically they only disproved "local" hidden variables, so their could still be non-local ones, but most quantum interpretations abandoned the need for hidden variables all together. yet matt has decided that logic dictates that things must either be in one state or another, therefore it must be true. The universe doesnt give a single solitary fuck about our logical systems, and his argument here is no more factual than the kalam cosmological argument. Pure Logic doesnt make something true, evidence does.
I often go up to strangers and start off with "I know you must be thinking I represent the Satanic temple, but that's totally not the case." because I'm totally a normal person not about to say something really weird.
Loving Lloyd.......... "I was cheating on my wife; I didn't know I was, but right then, the Spirit of Truth came inside of me...." (1:09:21) 'Cos it ain't cheatin' if he don't finish inside you. I've heard THAT excuse before.
@diane frady I heard it the opposite way. If a woman had difficulty conceiving, she should stay upside down right after the act to increase the chances.
We all do the same thing, we see somebody , or a show we are interested in, and click to watch it. We just dont feel the need to tell everybody on RUclips. You're not exclusive.
It certainly was. Here's what i wrote, live, in real time, during the show: "MOVE ON," NEXT CALLER." The moderators censured me. I wish the hosts were more discriminating sometimes.
@Magical Chemical Daddy Atheists believe in a God? And you are calling others dumb?😂😂😂😂😂 So sad that you have to troll atheist platforms, jus because your insecure and fragile beliefs, have you scared shitless and doubting😂😂😂😂
"How do you people believe in morality without believing in god" We have to be close to about a 1000 times that Matt has answered that question. You should find a suitable celebration animation, etc... to play when we hit that number. Or did we have that years ago and I missed it ? :-)
It disturbs me how difficult it is for the religionists to comprehend morality without a daddy holding a stick over their ass. My morality is based around causing the least harm and promoting the most well-being (very similar to how most of the hosts describe it, particularly Matt) and it galls me that they pretend they can't understand how that works. "But why is murder wrong without God?!" Do you have empathy? Are you a herd animal that benefits from a stable, healthy society? Does it improve YOUR life to not live in chaos? This shit is easy. But it does scare me that there's apparently people who would be murderous psychopaths without a God, because your brain is broke as hell if you can't figure this out.
Another marvellous line from Matt; “You should live, and you should live free. You should unshackle your mind from religions that are not true; from beliefs that are false and damaging; from beliefs that have been used to enslave and manipulate people. You should FREE yourself.”
Before completely leaving Christianity, I became a christian universalist too. After a while, I realized that even that happy fairytale belief is just truly more or as laughable and rediculous as my previous conventional christian belief.
Wonderful news France. I sometimes place modern theists with people who didn't know where lightning came from, so then said THEREFORE Zeus LOL. Similarly we still find twits today who understand we presently don't have the facts on how life started saying THEREFORE their particular God! Once life abiogenesis is all worked out, it will be: Where did the universe come from, I don't know THEREFORE my particular God. It'll go on and on until these lazy minded twits wake up, as you bravely did.
@@godslion2878 Except we know faith is an unreliable method to believe anything is true! If anything the Muslims have more faith than anyone, they live, eat, dress, shave, celebrate, and die by their religion. I mean Muslims DO know their Qur'an as they recite it 5 times a day word for word. So... are they right then? No? So now you understand faith is an unreliable method.
@@godslion2878 Do you think gullibility is a good thing? Believing in something merely because some other man or men told you its true? We believe in things when the evidence is presented first. Until then we withhold our belief, unless you want me to believe because you said so? Is that what YOU did? Since around the 13th century from the Age Of Reason, we began questioning if witches are real, if Gods really do make bad things happen, or if people have an evil thingy running around inside of them, that merely chanting the evil out then the person will immediately be better! I am certain that all theists (in general) are living in irrational fears and misguided love. No 'God' ever about on sunny days at the beach with the kids playing. No no, he prefers lonely dark nights of iron gates where a grave is usually lurking somewhere! This is not a joyful happy loving claimed God. But even if it were (and the Jesus God is NOT) Then we'd need the evidence that meets the claim BEFORE believing, as that's normal.
Thanks Matt for your rant on the use of the name "Karen" as a description for certain women. I wish people would stop this, because, as you say, it has consequences for real people. I don't happen to know anyone with the name, so I do not have an axe to grind, but I know what labelling does and how it can end up really hurting innocent people.
Aw, Keith just wants to present to Matt his idea of what evidence *should* convince him the supernatural is real. You know, potentially falsifying evidence. But, of course, that hypothetical would not necessarily do it. He's so excited that I feel for the guy :-)
@@smaakjeks Matt didn't remember the previous call and so misunderstood this entire interaction. Keith wasn't providing "evidence" but merely a hypothetical (which if it had occurred) would count as a supernatural event. Of course it wouldn't because as Matt often says: You can't form a link from the even to ta supernatural cause until you first prove the supernatural is real and it can then be included as a candidate explanation. Unfortunately Matt missed this and Keith was made to feel silly for the wrong reason.
They should’ve asked Keith how he’d discounted a magic trick in this hypothetical scenario. Darren Brown pulls “supernatural” style illusions like that all the time.
Sometimes there is a caller on this show that leads me to think "I wish EVERY religious person on earth would hear this call" Well that happened on this show with Lloyd's call.
You recalled the story. I remembered him by about the third syllable. I yelled ."it's the truck driver!" VERY distinctive(ly odd) style. I meant his speech pattern. But yeah, yelling about AXP callers? Perhaps also idiosyncratic.

Wow. Matt was on form this week. Not taking any crap from anyone :-) Loved it and Hemant - really warmed to you as the show went on. Would be really happy to have Hemant as a guest again. Great contribution.
I dont think he was actually making that argument though, i think what he was trying to ask is "what level of evidence, if any, would you need to accept the existence of a supernatural phenomenon," which is a fair question imo. I just think he was really, really bad at asking that, and they were interrupting him to much for him to be able to rephrase it.

Scripture is broadly defined as the sacred writings of a religion. What I don't get is why anyone would spend any time trying to *interpret* it. Why would anyone think writings from people long ago are anything more than a historical matter? Being a lifelong atheist has been easy, because it's really little more than recognizing the *initial improbability* of all religions. It's not complicated.

@pan dimensional super being bojangles The Drake equation is really nothing more than idle speculation. But, given the size of the universe, and assuming that abiogenesis is true, it is quite likely that we're not alone. The rest of what you said was indeed "woo-woo". We don't know if there are other dimensions, and saying things like "HIGHER DIMENSION" is meaningless without defining both words and giving evidence for them. You might as well use the word magic. "A BEING WOULD HAVE CAPACITIES AND ABILITIES ABOVE OUR 3-DIMENSIONAL UNIVERSE" So, not only can't you provide evidence of other dimensions, or that being could exist there, you simply assumed somehow that something living there would have certain abilities because....?????? BTW, is your CAPS LOCK on? Knowing that writing in all caps is bad form, is online etiquette 101.
@pan dimensional super being bojangles First of all, learn how to fucking spell. It's "actually you're WRONG!" and "you're just a gay". If YOU'RE going to try to insult people then at least look like YOU'RE not 12. "scientists have BOTH performed experiments PROVING a fourth SPATIAL DIMENSION exists!" Incorrect. Science doesn't work this way. There may be evidence that supports the idea, but generally speaking scientists don't speak the way you are. "and NASA says it has discovered a universe where time FLOWS BACKWARDS!" No. This is more bullshit from you. Feel free to link some reputable sites. RUclips isn't one of them, in case you don't know this. You might want to try Google Scholar. "USE ABIO-GENESIS/EVOLUTION/BILLIONS OF YEAR OLD UNIVERSE/MULTIVERSE AND DRAKES EQUATION TO GIVE HIGH PROBABILITY THAT" Abiogenesis is an unproven idea. Although I happen to personally think that it is likely. Evolution has been shown to be real. But it doesn't in any way explain a god-like being. I'm not sure what you think a "billion year old" universe has to do with things. We have no evidence that beings with godlike powers could exist, no matter the time frame. There may be some evidence that supports the multiverse theory, but it is far from conclusive. The Drake equation does not guarantee life. It is a WILD estimate at the probability of life. So, out of your list of "evidence", nothing really screams out that there must be a god or gods out there. Do you see the difference between when adults speak and what it is that you are doing? Thanks for playing.

I remember Keith. He was talking about being in a field and finding scratch marks.
@@jtveg It was a memorable one. I loved the way Matt dealt with it, coming up with the five possible explanations.
O hi! The friendly atheist is here :D I'm busy reading Genesis along with him so it's awesome to see him on the show!

Caller #1: If a ghost writes your name on your back in scratches it would prove the existence of the supernatural.
Sounds legit to me lol
Yup. Rock solid.
Should’ve said, “I’m not who you think I am, in my head, where I create your thoughts about me!” 🤔

Keith, would you believe in ended phone calls if Matt hung up on you?
So that's a "yes"?
Keith doesn't know what hypothetical question are for, a bit like Molyneux and his syllogisms.
"How do you people believe in morality without believing in god"
We have to be close to about a 1000 times that Matt has answered that question.

Since around the 13th century from the Age Of Reason, we began questioning if witches are real, if Gods really do make bad things happen, or if people have an evil thingy running around inside of them, that merely chanting the evil out then the person will immediately be better!

No 'God' ever about on sunny days at the beach with the kids playing. No no, he prefers lonely dark nights of iron gates where a grave is usually lurking somewhere! Matt didn't remember the previous call and so misunderstood this entire interaction. The rest of what you said was indeed "woo-woo". We don't know if there are other dimensions, and saying things like "HIGHER DIMENSION" is meaningless without defining both words and giving evidence for them. You might as well use the word magic.
