The Johansson violin has a unique quality and depth in the lower register, and I guessed it right in the blind version, and it was my favorite!

Ariel, you have shown how a talented musician can make the instruments sound their best. Fabulous. While I was rooting for the Colin Cross violin I have to say it was the low register on the Johansson that did it for me. A lovely rounded warm sound 😊

Hi. My choice: Vettori, Johanson, Cross. For me a very important component of violin sound is the sensation of playing it. What is picked up by the jaw none on the 'chin' rest; the sensation in the left hand fingers - string height, string tension, string height..., the sensation in the right hand - bow hair tension against string tension; all the other sounds that you pick up from being very close - bow sound on strings, over tones, undertones; and the quality of response to the bow you get from playing... So, set up is very important too. And of course getting someone else to play for you while you listen and also watch how they play it. Thank you.

Johannson was my favorite. Sweet singing. Low end nice too.
    Colin Cross 2nd.
Then on the dark video, I had these two reversed. Listened again and I guess they are fairly similar.
I didn't like the Vettori. It had a grainy sound.

Same here. The Colin Cross's G string is so deep and full. I hear the difference by the high Bb on the G. It just sings more openly. My second favorite was the Johannsson, the notes on the G string are brighter. Vettori's violin is more brittle and the Bb on the G doesn't sing as well. Overall these are great sounding violins.

Ótima ideia e um ótimo exercício para os ouvidos 😅
    Vamos lá;

    Got it right 😄
    According to first clip
First violin: projectile sound, flat direct sound, more like a soloist violin which need more projection
Second violin: it just give me a feeling of listing to my own violin 😅 that’s why I can recognise it. Vibrant sound
Third violin: sweet sound, not really harsh/bold

One of my tests is - how easy does it sing? Do you have to work hard to get the sound you want? The Johansson violin almost played itself, similar to a Stradivari of 1713 I've heard on YT. The Cross needed a bit of coaxing, but came in 2nd. You had to struggle a bit more to get sound from the Vettori. The violin has to make your work easier. In the Dark it was Johansson, Vettori/Cross. One comment though, regarding a singing instrument vs a solid sound. Different music may make you prefer a more solid sound w/o overtones. Popping stops on a fiddle are also very important to me. Without good stops you may get wolf notes even though you have good strings and string height. Good choice in music - good from both registers. Vettori was weak on G string. Maybe other reasons than the fiddle. It's good to have more than one violin 😃😃😃.

i think the newest always the brighter sound, probably because the age of the wood, and everything are new finishing, so probably the newest will be reach deep sound too after severals years,, 🙂 just my opinion

Interesting video. But in the first version they were also kind of a blind test because we have not seen them or heard them before. As for the pick of the day, my ears went for the Vettori in the second video and it was equal for the Cross and Vettori in the first one. All the e string sounded too gutsy to my taste. It might be the new headphones I’m breaking in. I’ll have to give it another try with other headphones that were broken in. The Johansson has potential but it sounds closed in at the moment.

Charles Beare believed that the sound of a violin depended 90% on the player. I have certainly heard a professional orchestral player make a £200 Chinese violin sound amazingly good (he was in an adjoining room and I did not see the violin ; only after he had finished did I find out what it was). All of the violins on show here are very fine instruments, and the differences are minimal , though I am pretty sure that the player could easily tell the difference - he hears it in quite a different way from us as onlookers. There's an old story about Heifetz being praised after a concert for the wonderful sound of his Guarneri - but he often did not take that priceless violin on tour, and he was using a decent modern American instrument. I note from other comments that there is a fair degree of disagreement about which is 'best'. For me, I have no idea, but I have to be aware of my own prejudices - I know Colin Cross violins (he's a Scottish maker and they are available in Edinburgh, near where I stay) and I have met Dario Vettori and played one of his violins, so I did not bring an open mind to the test. I enjoyed them all, and to play, or indeed even own, one would be a privilege.

    Congrats Ariel,
Good point on hearing sound, music etc. I think that we listen with our eyes too so that could be a problem, all 3 violins in my opinion very good, the price difference between them is huge, the sound difference not that much. On string instruments there is huge importance on parts like appropriate bridge, tailpiece, sound post, which strings, what kind of bow you have, hair of the bow and on which spot you put bridge and sound post. We would really like to hear more experiments like that on the other violins and violas.
I like the cheapest violin between those 3, Colin Cross😂😂, I think we look through money too so if I have a lot of money some day then I wouldnt by any of those 3. Its funny how we look through other things..... Be good, wishing all the best
