Guadagnini Violin by Elina Kaljunen, Finland 2024
Elina Kaljunen from Helsinki, Finland is one of the most talented makers of her generation. She crafts stunning instruments with meticulous care and attention to detail. In addition to the Stradivari, we have this very beautiful Guadagnini model violin. It is very rare to have two models available at the same by such a talented maker so it is a great opportunity to try them both. In terms of sound, the Guadagnini is a slightly warmer instrument than the Stradivari model with a beautiful overarching resonance that is present throughout the register. It responds beautifully and every note has a velvety roundness to it that is very well suited to many different repertoires. It also packs a p...

    Recently I bought Alice 747 set of string with 1/37 price of Larsen Gold Il canone strings, I can say the sound quality is not bad at all and it is very good regarding many other strings I have tried. I think the price of strings generally are high and the minor difference in sound( If there is any difference) is not justifiable. I think as they lost the market of instrument making , unfortunately, they will lose the string market sooner or later with these prices.

    An otherwise wonderful violin I owned had a very irritating wolf note on the D string. The C (natural) you would use the fourth finger for in third position. It did precisely the same thing at the same pitch on the G string. And if you see some videos of world class players acquainting themselves with Del Gesu violins (coincidentally this was a Del Gesu copy), they hit the very same wolf note. At least on the G string I could modify finger pressure, bow position and vibrato speed and width to mitigate it but absolutely nothing worked whatsoever for the D string. The best outcome I could achieve was experimenting with string types and tensions till I found one that mitigated it as much as possible. From memory it was a Silver wound Oliv D of one tension below normal (impossible to buy in here in Australia to make matters worse!). Luckily, the (normal) Olivs and a steel Aricore A had been my "go to" strings for years so the change was not dramatic. But when you play an instrument with absolutely no wolf notes it is a real breath of fresh air even if it does not sound as great as one with wolf notes. That said, many otherwise great instruments have at least one "weak" note which depending on severity might fall into the definition of a mild "low end" wolf note (or worse obviously). In my experience it tended to be much older instruments or brand new ones that are most affected by this undesirable character trait.

    Violins made from Similar Guarneri models. So Different models made by different makers ..That`s a big difference then . Try a video with three makers on the exact same model . Or Three Different models made by the same maker .Do you see where I`m going ? Reducing confusion .

    To my ears the Guarniery del Gesu sounds better than the Stradiarius violin. It has a much broad spectrum of frequencies that is more balanced. The Strads have a higher frequency spectrum bias. At least to my ears. All the instruments that you played sounded awesome though.

    I love it when makers travel the road less travelled. Everyone wants to copy a Strad or Del Gesu and at most add small personal touches as variations to a theme. To me, some of the most beautiful instruments (from a craftsmanship and aesthetics point of view) came from other makers.

    Innovative certainly and the 1st of its kind I have come across. The Ultralight has a beautiful inviting sound throughout.My violin's E string height is a shade below 3mm, probably in part due to weather- l prefer 3.5mm. In Lahore so far, I haven't found a reliable luthier to make the requisite adjustments- Ultralight could be the answer. In your opinion, how does its sound compare with traditional violins in the same price range? Can you try different chinrests?

  • @ShahFareed-y3k
    @ShahFareed-y3k 2 месяца назад

    A Strad is a Strad but my favourite is the 1st one. It has a compelling individual sound and rich overtones- really good projection as well. The G string seems resonant and almost imposing at times, which adds another dimension to its character. It's possible though, that if I play myself or hear them live, opinion might alter. Your playing brings out the different attributes of the violins nicely. Enjoyable experience.

    Excellent presentation and explanations (except for the bit about carbon fibre bows)

  • @BogenmacherD
    @BogenmacherD 2 месяца назад

    Carbon fiber bows can actually produce more "depth of sound" than pernambuco bows (2:09). It is really only a question of technology and quality. Pernambuco is not only know for being the most widespread used materials to make bows thus far, but also for being a highly endangered species with only about 5% of the original population still existing. Since being put on the Cites list of endangered species in 2007 it was and still is poached and smuggled in quantity and documents are forged. This has led to raids of bow makers and dealers in Brazil in 2022 and led to the destruction of tons of illegal wood and allegedly 150.000 illegal sticks and bows. In 2023 Brazil has banned all exports of Pernambuco. At the Cites conference in 2025 Pernambuco will most probably be put on Appendix 1 which will prohibit all future travel and trade.

    I wish I could be around to see what these perfectly mint, pristine violins will look like in 300 years time. It seems most makers these days like to produce (very pleasingly to me) "aged" instruments right from their birth - so violins such as these two today seem to be less often seen - at least by me (if not less often produced).

    This is by far the best recording of violins I've ever heard on RUclips. You can hear the character and power of each instrument, and actually tell them apart. Countless times I've watched comparisons of violins and strings, and they all sound alike, all poor examples of what the violin sounds like due to cheesy recording equipment or technique.
