I've always been interested in learning to play guitar and as of last year November at the age of 29 I finally decided to purchase one and commit to it. The first song I am learning is your slowed down version of primrose (12 tips I wish I know as a beginner guitarist) and because of this monthly challenge I can play all the Chords of the song now and its just to piece it all together and keep playing it till Its hard to make a mistake. More than that this monthly challenge has helped me to see that I just need to keep practicing and my fingers will cooperate in time lol. I feel confident that I can be a competent guitarist some years from now. Thank for your help Mary and keep up the hard work and inspiring others to pursue their passions!!
I got COVID at the beginning of this month. I found your channel and have been watching every day. I’m happy to say I’m doing much better. You’ve helped make my recovery a bit brighter. Thank you!
Not only do you have a lot of wonderful gear, but I think you've done a great job of making the most of your space. There's so much awesome in that small room, and it doesn't seem cramped at all!
MARY! What an INCREDIBLE TOUR of a STELLAR STUDIO! Would love to see it and subsequently avenge the murder of my dad sometime XOXO! - VS P.S. Good luck with the resolutions maybe add proficiency in sword fighting to your repertoire won’t say why cheers!
Love the chaos we create in our spaces. That's a lovely studio, you've got everything a musician needs to churn out a record. Nicely done. That 1936 Epi is so good.
Oh, you would be amazed at the amount of coffee-drinking Brits. Janeway would be proud! But yes. Tea will ALWAYS be the primary. Bonus points if that tea is Earl Grey, hot.
@thomas thompson The "Ox Box" contains a resistive load that absorbs the majority of the power delivered by an amplifier turned all the way up (or nearly) to get the desired "tone". Using a load instead of driving speakers to destruction keeps the neighbours happy and prevents the artist using the equipment from suffering even more.
The Universal OX Box is a reactive load box, so your amplifier thinks it is connected to a speaker cab. It also has a direct-out, so you don't need to mic a speaker cab. Basically, it is a way to record when you don't have the ability TO mic a cab. Of course, it costs the same as most amplifiers anyway, so this is the exact opposite of a budget recording rig. For a budget rig, you would use a Focusrite Scarlett, and a JST plugin in your DAW.
Thank you for inside peek !!! Just brilliant ! Cannot be forgotten that all the "tools" in the world don't make any difference unless you have a super-talent orchestrating and pulling it all together with amazing vocals !!
Thanks Mary, Watched every day, and practiced each day. Loved the guitar stories. At 64 l have picked the guitar up again in this crazy year and loving it...plus purchased a Martin 000-15M. Hi from Australia. Ruth 🎸
Thank you Mary. I'm glad you see you are human after all. Don't mind the mess, it looks quite tidy actually!! Thanks for the tour. Looking forward to the new release! Cheers.
That Ibanez Artcore is a tastefully understated beauty! It's a shame that it's not being used as much. I'd probably would've felt the same of my semi-hollow-body too if it had retained it's original pickups. But having a set of new old pickups certainly woke it up! I have a Firefly FF-338-BB that has a set of Gibson pups from a 2009 Les Paul Traditional Professional (Burstbucker 3 and 57 Classic) installed. The difference was like night vs day. It quickly proved itself as one of my top favorites. I perfectly understand about having a bass (or a few, in my case, LOL) even if not a bassist. I have 3 different basses, each being very different, each serves differently for me. One is a short-scale full-active pj-bass, one is a full-scale p-bass, and finally a full-scale 6-string soapbar bass. I agree having several different types of guitars for a variety of tonal palette available for different inspirations on hand. Yes, even if they're the same guitar type, two of the same type can provide a different tonal feel. I have multiple versions of each types; strats, super-strats, les pauls, and even a few metal machines (2 Vs and 2 star types). They all certainly influence me to play differently on each!
Just a few minor comments. A. Someone once said music at a party should be quiet enough that you only noticed it when no one is talking. So well done on the volume. B. I have enjoyed this series. Every day there was something new to watch an learn. For some very beautiful guitars to some great English countryside. I’m not looking forward to tomorrow. C. I’m with you on more behind the scenes videos. Unfortunately, the albums I would have really enjoyed watching are from the the past eras. 4. Speaking of behind the scenes videos, Alexandra Whittingham just released a video of her practicing a piece of classical guitar and it was a treat to realize the she makes mistakes and occasionally gets dissatisfied (perhaps not the best word but what the heck). E. Are separate pedal boxes better than a multi-effects board like Boss ME-80(for explanatory purposes only)? F. My son needs that drawer of strings. That might be a birthday present, thanks for that suggestion.
While I haven't seen all of your videos during January, I have seen quite a few. I will say that it was a Courageous Effort. I recently saw your video with Rick Beato from March of 2020. and you mentioned not getting a positive letter about an endeavor. Embrace your Voice, It is what makes you Unique in a Sea of Conformity. You have a very Rich and or Lush Quality about your Voice that very few have. Steve Vai once said he focuses on his strengths and everything else seems to follow suit. And I will leave you with something else My Amazing Music Mentor told me after I became one of his top 5 students within a year of his teachings with over 200 students. Learn everything you can Musically and then forget it and just play, when you need it, it will be there. I will enjoy looking forward to our new record and by all means keep being Mary Spender!!
January is over, never looked forward to February less now the daily post's have finished. Many thanks Mary, great job filling 30 days with joy and entertainment 💖
It takes courage to share. Thank you. And now a compliment, you, Mary Spender, are a force to be reckoned with! And that's high praise. Album will be awesome!
You've got such a cozy studio, guy! I know almost nothing about music yet, but you and your videos have been pushing me to a better direction! I dream to become some amazing artist like you one day, who knows! Congrats and never stop being who you are! You've got a great fan on me! 🤘🏻🌹
I’m sure you already know this, but make sure your acoustics are properly humidified (or at least in a stable climate). If they aren’t, it can cause the wood to shrink and crack. I generally keep mine in their cases with a hygrometer.
I've really been enjoying your videos lately. For someone who claims to have G.A.S. I am surprised at how humble your studio appears to be. You do a lot with some basic, although very good quality hardware. Goes to show how important a good performance is to the final product, and that you don't really need boxes full of expensive mics or a Neve console to create great music. Very nice.
A few months ago, I placed a Cort g300 in vivid burgundy on order. Fingers crossed I get it early this month. Just waiting on the factory. It's a super strat style, with ALL kinds of tones to choose from. CorTek makes most of the best electric guitar brands out there, including PRS, and they didn't spare any high-end spec on my guitar. If I get any other electric, it will probably be a D'Angelico Atlantic or Bedford. My other instruments are a 1970s (pre-Martin lawsuit) 12-string Mahogany dreadnaught, a vintage Kay archtop acoustic/electric guitar...similar to your '36 Epiphone, a 2002 Martin OM-28V, a 2002 Taylor 614ce, a Cardiff music store brand jumbo, a fancy lil ukulele, my late dad's old 1960s Yamaha classical acoustic, and, the newest family member, a Teton Guitars (local Idaho USA guitar maker) ebony parlour guitar. I'm just an at-home musician who tinkers around and loves a good jam sesh, having grown up in Austin, Texas...but, because I worked as a music manager and A&R rep in Nashville, I knew it wasn't going to turn into a professional gig. ;) Going to sub because I enjoy your music from across the pond. Stay safe and inspired!
I’ve practiced my guitar every day this month - longest streak ever for me! Have recently got my first audio interface and looking forward to experimenting with recording as well! Thanks for the motivation!
I've been eyeing up mics for some time and after watching this I just threw caution to the wind and purchased the SM7B. Absolutely incredible dynamics and recommend to everyone heavily. I was using an SM58 for vocals and acoustic guitars and the difference is insane. Also using with SM57 off my electric amps for stereo recording and its amazing. Thanks Mary!
Hi mary , I'm new here just saw your video of your 36 epiphon yesterday, beautiful sound after the new strings, im from Brighton new york, and a fan best of luck with the album I'll be watching, God bless
Thanks so much for all of your amazing content, Mary! I also did a classical music degree and am working on my singer/songwriter career, and have found your videos to be incredibly helpful. So thank you for all that you do!
Every once in awhile you come across someone who you think to yourself, “how is it possible that this person is even more beautiful on the inside than they are on their beautiful outside? Mary is one of those people. Can’t wait to hear the album.
Mary Spender wins the "most efficient use of small space" award for 2021! I thought my studio was small - I think yours is smaller by maybe 1/3! Great job on the 31 days!
Thanks so much for these daily videos. Even though I am only a hobbyist when it comes to the guitar, you have inspired me to pick it up more routinely than I had before. I'm now also considering to take your course on fingerstyle playing. I hadn't played the guitar in about 17 years or so, mostly due to busy workdays with lots of commuting time. The COVID pandemic of the past year meant working from home which essentially gave me more sparetime. It also got me to think about what I was missing in life and it turned out I craved to be more creative again. I took some time to upgrade my 30+ year old Strat clone (Maison) with some better pickups and started to noodle again. Through your videos this last month I was motivated to pick up my guitar for a minimum of 20-30 minutes a day, which is not a lot of course, but definitely better than not playing at all for all those years. Thanks for your informative and fun videos, keep it up and I will keep watching.
I really appreciate all these videos! I love this little studio and the collection of gear you have acquired over the years! I'm looking forward to the album!
I watched every video, thanks for keeping up with them! It was good to hear a lot of the fundamentals of learning over again (habit forming and such). I really enjoyed the bit with Tomo Fujita and the idea behind listening back to yourself on tape. Even if I don't plan on using tape, I think I have the discipline to listen back to 30 minute chunks. Such a game changer because it helps to plan your day/week/month. Thanks also for this tour of your studio. As someone who also has a fairly limited space for creating, it's always reassuring to see that people I look up to are producing in a similar footprint. :) Cheers Mary!
Mary, your toolbox is bountiful. Maybe you could do an interview with Tyler Bryant of the Shakedown, and or Mike Seal guitarist who plays classical and many other genres. I love musicians interviewing musicians. ☮️♥️🇨🇦
Keep on keepin' on Mary - you're awesome. Inspiration is everything - you've inspired me to clean my studio. If you're embarrased of your clutter you would probably recommend jail time for me :)
I've loved this whole series! Engaging and inspiring in its own right -- you are a wonderful and thoughtful presenter -- but, yes, you did indeed hold me accountable. I practiced guitar every day this month, even if all I could do is 5 or 7 minutes or whatever. I committed to doing at least a little something on it each day, and hit it. Thank you!!
Well done Mary! You made it through January and managed to upload ( practically 😉) every day !!!! I hope this habit has you hooked as you have practically become part of my daily routine. I basically use your video as an alarm clock/reminder to practice 🎸 for 30 mins everyday Well done ! You are certainly off to a good start in 2021 I hope the daily videos keep coming but don’t burn yourself out
Ps “Did you practice your guitar today”??????? No ... but I finally finished a production that I have had “writers block” for a few weeks, so it’s a good day !!!!
I love studio tours, enjoy looking at how others do their thing. Always amazed at how many guitars people have (I only have one acoustic and two electric six strings and an ancient Squier P-Bass that will be cremated with my dead body).
I've enjoyed this month with you immensely Mary! Thank you for the push, the information, the fun and for sharing your journey!!
Your room is so neat!! I will show you my room next time!!
TomoFujitaMusic wow hi
I remember using that pickup line 50 years ago while in college. Glad to see that it still works.

Congrat's Alex! You have learned what it takes to keep on learning.
SM7B is great for brutal death metal growls, I presume your album will be chock full of those
First single off the new record is going to end up generating more reaction videos than Pisces by Jinjer if that's the case.
@@neilomac I'd make that video
I would love to just make some wild fuzz craziness behind an acoustic track from Mary lol.
Queen of djent incoming!
Sarah Longfield can do some wicked growls. So maybe she could guest star.

Where is the coffee maker?
Fresh pots!
For obvious reasons, Mary strikes me as a cup o tea kind of person :)

I think she keeps them in their cases. This is the first time I saw her guitar rack with all of them. She may be doing this just for the video.
This video was very interresting to watch; all your guitar collection and how it's articulate around from your computer/desk.

Thank you for all your January videos - it has been great :)
I love studio tours, enjoy looking at how others do their thing. Always amazed at how many guitars people have (I only have one acoustic and two electric six strings and an ancient Squier P-Bass that will be cremated with my dead body).
You have tidied up a lot since you’re last studio tour Mary, it looks great 👍
I really hope Rhett and Adam are playing on the new record!
