Sean Daniel weird how you youtubers are uploading almost the same thing lol. Its like you all agreed on it or somewhere in an alternate universe someone has altered their past lol
PLUS, we have tons of back up everything. Crucial on the road . Extra Strings, extra cables, Power conditioner ( Furman ) , Food for after the gig, Water, warm clothing, tools of any kind, extra playback music in the pauses, flashlights, etc
That was an amazing insight into your gigging world. Thankyou so much for sharing...It's unfortunate that when I do find someone on this cyber-world that I would absolutely love to hear perform live...they live half a world away. Much love from Canada. Keep on blessing the world with your music.
Greetings from Crete!!! I do the same job for the summer for 5-6 days a week. I've come to a point that I wanted to have a fast setup. So I got a rack and put all the cables inside and they are connected all the time at the mixer so I only have to plug them in the microphones and pedals and speakers. Also I got a digital mixer which I can control by a tablet in front of me. All of these saved me time. I setup and I pack in about 15 minutes.
Great video and we got a mini performance to boot! It's nice to see what a performer doing local small gigs should take with them. That's the part I love about it, the local and small part and how to keep the amount of gear manageable. Thank you Mary!
Really great to see all that laid out. Looper for. Self sound check is brilliant! When I was playing more pubs, I would split a two hour (or more) show into half hour sets and split it with another act (or two). This kept the audience interested and the musicians fresh. This also means we could take turns running sound for each other. You take a but if a hit in earnings, but pubs like it when you bring a party, and it's easier to land longer gigs.
Hi Mary, this video is super amazing for me as I'm trying to build a new identity as a solo guitarist/songwriter and to be self-sufficient after years of band gigging. You're wonderful as always, cheers and keep it up!
Hi Mary! I'm not a professional musician or guitar player, more a classical choir singer. I just wanted to confess that I got used to look at least at the opening of nearly all of your videos... ...just to see and hear you say "chewsday tawks"! Great 😊👍🏼, love it! Just keep them coming. You're making the world a better and more soothing place. Your English and your voice are just marvellous. Thanks from Finland!
One thing I learned the hard way back when I was in a gigging band.... backups, backups, backups. Cables, cords, power sources, strings, amp tubes (valves), and anything else that can fail at the worst possible time. Loopers are one of the most innovative and useful items for guitar that's been developed since I started playing almost 50 years ago. Great rundown of your live rig and gear, Mary. Thanks!
Spot on Mary!!!!! I do basically the same thing, I'll digitech jamman stereo, the big blue pedal, but I also use Boss Rc 20( 2001)& rc20xl,as well as Roland powered speakers that run on batteries, some times no power, last more than the 4-5 hrs gigs! Rock on girl!!!!
Great video! I'll be retiring in a few years and am looking forward to entertaining with my acoustic. Not only did you give a nice rundown of what is needed but you entertained as well. You are obviously very talented and I wish you success in all your future endeavors.
So $2000 to work your craft is not bad, considering I work in aviation and I spent $2500 just on the tool box I needed! However your job can be more enjoyable and feel like you're getting your money worth! Keep up the great work.
Mary thank you as always for great videos and taking the time to share with other musicians who are out there gigging. I hoped this has blessed many others as it had blessed me. Thx smiles
Thanks for sharing your knowledge- so many musos are keen to keep this info close to their chest. Loved your version of cry me a river too! Awesome on both Vox & guitar 😍🤟
I just bought Faux Americana on Itunes and in my opinion, there is only one reason you aren't signed to a recording contract and touring the world right now. The damned recording industry drove itself right into the ground and kept its foot on the pedal until it was buried. Back in the day, someone would have signed you quickly! First new music I've bought in ages. Seriously. I mainly listen to the Stones and Zeppelin. lol Perhaps it's time for a new Album or EP? I'd buy it. :)
Hey Spiritbro77, you should definitely go to maryspender.bigcartel.com and check out the CDs Mary has for sale. As well as being absurdly great value, you get a lovely handwritten note! Screw you iTunes, cant do that can ya??
Nice realistic overview of what actual working musicians use. No huge pedal boards or monster amps. Good solid state equipment that is reliable and rugged and just gets the job done. Nice video.
Thanks for this! I always thought people should have their own monitor, makes so much sense. I hardly ever see people use them on their solo gigs where I'm at.
A great way to stop drunk people from crashing into you and your gear is to run an led rope light on the floor in front of the area you want to play. It's amazing how well it works as a boundary line, even the most pissed punters respect its power!
Psychedelic Electric Juice Anything to save my teeth getting knocked out by a falling mic! They’d have to release a footswitchable tazer though, don’t want to stop playing to take aim and fire!
I noticed that Mary Spender is getting as many views per video, if not more than Emma Blackery. I find that amazing because Emma Blackery has 1.4 million subscribers. Well done Mary 👍
Thank you Mary for this super helpful video!! I've just got my self the Rolan Cube Street Ex ,It is awesome for small venues ,or Busking I can't recommend highly enough!
Killing it as always Mary! My solo set up is very similar sans the pedals, it makes me cry when I go out on tour with my other band that I play drums in because it's so much stuff to load and unload hahaha
This is a great video and very useful to see everything listed out with clear explanations for the reasoning behind each piece of gear. Nice playing, singing to boot! My hats off to you for the 4 hour gig, I don't think I could ever learn enough songs to play that long!
That Stagepas is such a reliable bit of kit for the cash. I bought one new about four or five years ago and it was well worth the investment. Thats the great thing about PA for musicians, if you've got access to gigs then PA pays for itself within a couple of months or so.
Thankyou. I just bought a mic with stand and amp. I thought that was all I needed for a very small boutique coffee shop!! Hope I don't need to get too much more. I have always just played guitar for friends. Branching out! Very helpful vid!
my thought would be NEVER use a mobile phone (or any transmitting device) anywhere near an amplifier because of the transmission sounds it will surely get caught and amplified finding their way to your speakers.
In the US, you might need a U-Ground adapter for your Power Bar if you're playing an older venue, had to start a gig late once because I had only a Two Conductor AC Socket and a Three Conductor Power Bar, someone did a store run while I set up.
I just love to hear you sing. What I also love is positive energy you project, it is so refreshing. Keep it up. Hopefully we get to see you on this side of the pond in 2018.
Mary you are way too nice. If one faces the mic boom in straight angle towards the audience, someone will fall on it and either damage your guitar (the good scenario) or knock your teeth in with your own microphone. First option happened to my poor old strat, and second one I just saw happen on a pub gig. After that, always angle the boom to the side, feels a bit awkward for a while but after that it's a second nature. :)
Another great vid, thanks Mary! I wish I had seen this video before I started gigging, might have saved me some time and money. Although buying gear is fun, right? The Roland Cube is also handy for busking (aka "paid rehearsals!) although I prefer to use in-ear monitors for much better volume control and saving my ears (I have the SE215's, not the 425's that Mary uses, as I don't work for Shure and I'm not as good a musician as Mary is, hence less budget!). Oh, and whilst more expensive, if you can afford a wifi mixer (I use and love the Soundcraft Ui12) then you can save settings (mix, volume, effects, even backing tracks) for venues and re-use them when you play there again and get your friend/lover/groupie/bar manager (or 16yo son in my case) to roam the venue with an iPad/tablet and adjust the sound whilst hearing precisely what the audience is hearing. Love your work Mary, thanks again.
Great video! Thanks for the insight of your setup. I've seen you on RUclips with Phil and others but never heard you play. You are awesome! I wish you much success.
Well done! I do some amateur performing and have a much less professional (and expensive) set-up for a variety of reasons. I really thought you explained what you use and why quite well. I would have liked to hear about your lighting and what you chose for that. Thank you!
Hi Mary Enjoyed your video: you’ve got a beautiful voice, it sounds very tight and clear. Good looping too. My tip for new gear: Seagull guitars offer great value for money, as well as the yamaha A3 (China) and A5 (Japan) For backing tracks I now work with Roland mc101: so deep… Thankxx GerBard
One important way to stay self-sufficient at a gig is to bring your own beverage or whatever you require to keep you going (preferably water). I've known musicians who immediately go to the bar, open a tab and have drinks delivered throughout the evening. Then there's a bill at the end and this muddles the payment transaction.
wow!... that sounded really good!... just discovered u on andertons tv when u shopped for an amp with capt Lee...I must say, your very talented!.... congrats
Awesome video, I just got the Roland Cube street EX, Sure SM-58 (with stand and cable) and I'm waiting for a wireless (battery powered) system for my guitar - I have the guitars, tuner, loop pedal, but I'm just putting it all together - including my songs .. so your video was really helpful - thank you!
That's a nice little kit, Mary, and I expect it will continue to serve you well for a long time to come. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was that you bring lights... Way too often, I see musicians show up at a venue, sometimes with thousands of dollars of gear... but not a single light... so, they play in the dark. I mean, would it would kill them to bring a couple of stands and LED pars? I tend to go the other direction and bring way too much stuff, but I'm foolish like that. Keep up the good work!
Mary!! Finally! Someone who uses Yamaha Stagepas!! Yay. I do as well....😅 Soooo...You're an "Englishman in New York" at the moment. I found myself revisiting this video, as I still have my stagepas and wont get rid of it! ..Perfect for me. "Well , I found an amp...beautiful and sweet ...and that amp is perfect..for me."🤣🤣 - apologies Ed! lol TC Helicon playlive? Would you get rid of your Boss for it? Do you like it? Also, Cube for busking? Yes? Upgrading to Yamaha LG Transacoustic. Experiences??? TY!!
Wow, very nice video. Alot of useful information. The only thing that surprised me was that you didn't have any redundancy in any of your equipment, in case of a problem. I one time got a phone call from a guitar player because he was setting up at a gig and he accidentally dropped his guitar amp. He normally brings two amps, two guitars, etc. but thought he would be ok. The amp was acting up initially during sound check. I almost drove him my bigger amp to help him out. He got it working and it luckily worked all night without incident. Just a thought. Thanks for your video.
Hi Mary, liked your video on gig gear especially when one is tight on his pocket. Also, your videos are inspiring and I love your style of playing. I’ve started following all your videos and have even subscribed. Please keep posting more such videos
A very informative video and a great cover of Cry Me A River. I was surprised to see that you bring your own lighting, but it does make sense to rely on the venue for as little as possible. Plus, it looks like they conveniently also light up your pedals to cut down on guesswork and I really liked your tip about using a loop pedal to keep the music going while you adjust levels. Btw, that was a very inventive use of a drone. I would never have thought of flying one inside to get a shot like that.
Love your videos! 1700 euros sounds pretty good to gear up, actually. I am a digital artist (VFX, motiongraphics) and when you go out into the world as a freelancer on your own you'd need a 3000 euro computer plus another 3000-5000 on assorted software licenses (depending on your speciality), plus around 150 a month for image banks, hard drives, etc. I think any artistic endeavor you follow you'd have to invest heavily in the beginning to get the ball rolling.
Hi - and thank you for exactly the sort of video I come to YT for ie practical, informative and to the point . I would be very interested in a follow up video along the lines of what you might need when you play electric guitar in a band situation with hopefully some insight about when there is a need for monitors and power/wattage levels generally. And knowing the cost would be useful too especially if you could mention any experience of hiring for just a night.
Hurray...! A songbook...! I'm rubbish at rembering lyrics too and always have my songbook on a stand in front of me - very low and flat so as not to look too obvious, but there none the less. In my world, no songbook - no gig! :0) Great video Mary - ta very much!
I really need a loop pedal haha. Well i will start saving up for one. Great video mary and goodluck on your tour. I will definitely be checking out your albums and might even purchase some haha. Love your channnel and hopefully you collab with the Captain again. Thanks for everything :)
Wish I could get away with a rig like that. Playing with either a 5 piece classic rock band or backing for a vocal group (11 piece) I'm pretty much lugging a full PA system. Add my own guitar rig and it barely fits in the back of a mid size van.
I would like to find a Tap and Die set that is compatible with the thread spacing for Microphone stand parts. If a microphone stand breaks, I like to be able to trim a little of it off, re-thread it and put it back into service.
FRIGGING BRILLIANT VIDEO!! Great advice. Hey Mary, how big is your repertoire for these types of solo gigs and how do you go about building a set list?

I illuminate the stage with the radiance of my personality.
Are we not gonna talk about the cover of Cry Me A River cause I thought it was amazing

HAHA!
'Big Spender' is actually also the name of my Tone Prints for TC!
And it's the same colour as your Vigier! It's DESTINY!

kodiak wild good idea!

Great video Mary, thanks for all the detail of the setup, great performance of your skills too..... very nice
this video is very well explained, organized and informative. Even of 2 years ago or so it contained a lot of great tips and insight.
Killing it as always Mary! My solo set up is very similar sans the pedals, it makes me cry when I go out on tour with my other band that I play drums in because it's so much stuff to load and unload hahaha

The use of using the bass notes to double on the vocal melody was so cleannnnn
Great talk Mary, happy to see we use the same loop station 👏🏼,
May get to see you in Manchester, transport required. Enjoy the tour. 🕊
been watching your videos for a couple of weeks and I just wanted to say thank you for your useful tips. keep up the good work

And dont forget a flashlight :D it can be really hard to see anything on stage when you have to do anything to your rig without one
Just use your iPhone man. Flashlight built in and you are gonna have on you anyway.
it's still a flashlight. also, some phones dont have one built in. And some people dont like the distraction of having a phone on them while playing.
And sometimes you need to set up the light hands free and that's difficult with a phone. I also put a small pair of wire cutters in my case.
Randall Marks exactly!
my thought would be NEVER use a mobile phone (or any transmitting device) anywhere near an amplifier because of the transmission sounds it will surely get caught and amplified finding their way to your speakers.
You make it look so easy which proves what a talent you are... very nice!
In the US, you might need a U-Ground adapter for your Power Bar if you're playing an older venue, had to start a gig late once because I had only a Two Conductor AC Socket and a Three Conductor Power Bar, someone did a store run while I set up.
Great style beautiful presentation and voice thank you for sharing . Love your accent God bless
Much respect. 1st time I noticed the bicycle tattoo and bicycle on your guitar. I'm an even bigger fan now. Thanks for making Tuesday's tolerable.
I really like your guitar solo technique and style.
>Bizzare instagram-y layout
Please look up "knolling". It's actually got a super interesting history, but it's also super handy

Hi Mary
Enjoyed your video: you’ve got a beautiful voice, it sounds very tight and clear. Good looping too.
My tip for new gear: Seagull guitars offer great value for money, as well as the yamaha A3 (China) and A5 (Japan)
For backing tracks I now work with Roland mc101: so deep…
Thankxx
GerBard
Mary Spender, you’re a gem.
One important way to stay self-sufficient at a gig is to bring your own beverage or whatever you require to keep you going (preferably water). I've known musicians who immediately go to the bar, open a tab and have drinks delivered throughout the evening. Then there's a bill at the end and this muddles the payment transaction.
BEST CHANNEL; OUT THERE
That sounded great Mary..Good luck on your tour.
Amazing video for a new artist, thanks for sharing your great knowledge with others. Bless you .
Great video. Just starting all this myself, very early stages yet . Thanks for sharing the info 😊
I like how you have a drone an smartphone to photograph your gear.. thats next level greek!
Hi Mary, hey that was really great way to explain the gear plus you made it very ez for me to understand 👍thanks for the video
True musician, you even explained working a PA in time to the music!
wow!... that sounded really good!... just discovered u on andertons tv when u shopped for an amp with capt Lee...I must say, your very talented!.... congrats
So much stuff! Super helpful vid, really opened my eyes to the world of gigging.
Just picked up the DD500 which has an excellent looper on it.
Great video! Your content is really helpful for a starting solo gigging musician. Thanks a lot.
Love you your videos. You make it look so easy, when its not. You have incredible talent.
Hey Mary, have you had a go on the Digitech Trio+? Would love to see what you could come up with using it.
Love my chewsday talks! Mary come to NEW England ;-) One can only hope lol. Keep up all the great inspiring work. Cheers from the States!
very nice, I run a Bose system and love it. Keep on making music and living life.
Brilliant video Mary. Really useful and honest. Thinking of investing in a street cube ex and going out busking next year. Thanks again 😁👍
I just randomly found your channel. Excellent information and outstanding talent. You’ve got a new subscriber.
Mary!! Finally! Someone who uses Yamaha Stagepas!! Yay. I do as well....😅
Soooo...You're an "Englishman in New York" at the moment. I found myself revisiting this video, as I still have my stagepas and wont get rid of it! ..Perfect for me.
"Well , I found an amp...beautiful and sweet ...and that amp is perfect..for me."🤣🤣
- apologies Ed! lol
TC Helicon playlive? Would you get rid of your Boss for it? Do you like it?
Also, Cube for busking? Yes?
Upgrading to Yamaha LG Transacoustic. Experiences???
TY!!
Have you considered getting a POG or other octave pedal for basslines? Mini POGs are pretty affordable. Great setup btw, pubs are lucky to have you.
Wow, very nice video. Alot of useful information. The only thing that surprised me was that you didn't have any redundancy in any of your equipment, in case of a problem. I one time got a phone call from a guitar player because he was setting up at a gig and he accidentally dropped his guitar amp. That was a great instructional, thank you. I like the idea of using the Street Cube as a monitor. It's a wedge, who woulda thunk?
Just wondering where you set the cube up as a monitor to avoid feedback
Another bit of essential gear everyone forgets - a $10 outlet tester. Plugging into an ungrounded power outlet can make for a not so fun gig.
Hi Mary, liked your video on gig gear especially when one is tight on his pocket. Also, your videos are inspiring and I love your style of playing. I’ve started following all your videos and have even subscribed. Please keep posting more such videos

Kettle leads! The thing everyone forgets!
This is so helpful Mary!! Thanks so much for this very specific info.
You rock Mary, nice playing and vocals.
Nice tip on the mic angle. Makes a lot of sense. Taking a mic to the lips is certainly less than ideal.
I think any artistic endeavor you follow you'd have to invest heavily in the beginning to get the ball rolling.
i almost cried @ 8:15 when you stopped playing :D , thanks for the video :D
Hi - and thank you for exactly the sort of video I come to YT for ie practical, informative and to the point . I would be very interested in a follow up video along the lines of what you might need when you play electric guitar in a band situation with hopefully some insight about when there is a need for monitors and power/wattage levels generally. And knowing the cost would be useful too especially if you could mention any experience of hiring for just a night.
thumbs up, that was a really well made video - and some nice bonus music! :)
Hurray...! A songbook...! I'm rubbish at rembering lyrics too and always have my songbook on a stand in front of me - very low and flat so as not to look too obvious, but there none the less. In my world, no songbook - no gig! :0) Great video Mary - ta very much!
Very efficient , Mary! I wish you a great carreer!
Great clip Mary. Loved it!
If you come to California Mary, I’m there with bells on! Good luck on your tour =)
I really need a loop pedal haha. Well i will start saving up for one. Great video mary and goodluck on your tour. I will definitely be checking out your albums and might even purchase some haha. Love your channnel and hopefully you collab with the Captain again. Thanks for everything :)
That's a great idea, I totally need a Mavic for my gigging :) (but seriously, points for the indoor drone shot!)
you have a beautiful voice
Great Video Mary... Awesome and inspiring
Wish I could get away with a rig like that. Playing with either a 5 piece classic rock band or backing for a vocal group (11 piece) I'm pretty much lugging a full PA system. Add my own guitar rig and it barely fits in the back of a mid size van.
I think Ed Sheeran uses a similar set up but with an extra mic into the loop pedal for backing vocals.
I would like to find a Tap and Die set that is compatible with the thread spacing for Microphone stand parts. If a microphone stand breaks, I like to be able to trim a little of it off, re-thread it and put it back into service.
FRIGGING BRILLIANT VIDEO!! Great advice. Hey Mary, how big is your repertoire for these types of solo gigs and how do you go about building a set list?
great vid as always. Fancy coming to Brighton as well ? .. should be easily able to draw a crowd here
Holy cow! such a good content. Practical in 2021.
Very inspiring and usefull video! Thank you Mary!
