In today’s episode, we’re going to be mixing a song by Mary Spender, with Mary Spender herself! I’m sure many of you know her name, she’s incredibly talented and has made quite a name for herself in the guitarist community. We met in Germany while at Thomann Gearhead University 2019 and decided we would do a song together!
Mary is a British independent singer/songwriter and guitarist who makes music, podcasts, and weekly videos on RUclips. She has been described as the “most dynamic, expressive young British singer-songwriters working today.” Her songwriting skills have been compared to the likes of Debbie Harry and Tracy Chapman, and her guitar skills have been compared to John Mayer and Joni Mitchell.
Mary first became interested in guitar when some of her schoolmates started getting guitars and learning how to play, and she decided she wanted to play too. She was studying classical music at the time, with lessons in piano, violin, and viola, but never any guitar lessons. So she dug up her great-grandmother’s old Spanish guitar and began to teach herself. After just one year, she had saved up enough money to buy her first electric guitar: a Yamaha Pacifica 112 and a Laney practice amp, which she still has to this day!
Over the years, Mary has worked to develop a very unique style that blends her sultry vocals with a percussive fingerpicked electric technique that combines pop, blues, and soul. As she developed her skills and her voice matured, Mary floated between a number of genres, including rock and electronic, but has now settled on writing her own music in a bluesy style.
In September 2016, Mary began her “Tuesday Talks” series on her RUclips channel, and these have been a huge success. These videos provide practical advice about gear, songwriting, and technique, and can also feature interviews with guitarists, online guitar personalities, and gear makers. Some of the people she’s interviewed include David Townsend, KT Tunstall, and James Valentine. This past year, Mary reached a total of 9 million hits on her RUclips channel!

I'm happy for her while simultaneously slightly jealous lol
like 10-15 years ago, I couldn't even imagine that kind of a lucky break for a hard working DIY indie artist like Marry. (not to say she hasn't earned it from hard work, she most certainly has!)
It's just fascinating to see how the game has changed so much for indies in the music business today. The ways in which connections are made, just so all over the place now thanks to the web & youtube and such. (now if only we can get these artists the pay they deserve!)

I've heard the term "mixing" often in relation to song recording but i've never really known what it meant. Watching this video it seems like it's a very repetitious process and a process that requires quite a bit of skill to do effectively. Whenever Warren brought up a plug in, such as a Compressor/Limiter, and made adjustments i wondered why there was no save button, how does that adjustment automatically become part of the mix. Pro Tools must be a great program to work with but i've no idea how someone would learn how to do all the things Warren was doing without doing some sort of apprenticeship. Do you need good pitch, be that perfect or relative pitch or does mixing require a different set of aural skills. It's a fascinating craft now that i've witnessed it.

Warren, i noticed that you used a high pass filter on the vocal delay send in this mix. Some folks (Bob C...?) have presented using a de-esser for the same purpose of controlling higher frequency content in the ambient embellishment of vocal (and other) tracks. My question is, aside from the 'technical' frequency and time domain considerations, do you have a preference or 'rule of thumb' for using one or the other? In other words, what might be the difference in the way a listener experiences/perceives one or the other and/or is there a noticeable difference in how the use of either mixing tool may effect the target track - alone or in the context of an overall mix?
Thanks in advance, and thanks for your fine craftsmanship and 'due diligence' :) in mixing Mary's absolutely beautiful vocal tracks in this song!!! Bravo and kind regards to you both! (Apologies if you've addressed this question elsewhere, in other content.)
    - Charles

I found your multitracks of this song before this video and oh lord it is kicking my ass. I’ve been making beats for years but never have done anything recording a band and there’s so many new challenges! Thank you so so much for this really valuable resource and learning tool. It’s teaching me loads, especially about how much more I have to learn!

Gives it more (or more precise) control over the gate if you use, for example, a sawtooth waveform that is adjustable in length by changing the event-length, that you feed in the sidechain of the gate? If you want to reduce the bleed from the kick into the snare mic, would you insert a highpass filter OR sidechain compression (fast attack & release) on the snare triggered by the kick sample OR a combination of both?

No disrespect to Mary and co.; the song didn't grab me - but hey what do I know? Now, I only mention it, because I love what you did with the drums. Granted they were recorded a little low, but once balanced and lifted, you really brought them to life without threatening the natural, relaxed feel they had. It's a given that with an expanded palette of non-stock, I'm sure you could breath even more life into it, but as a lesson, it was a joy to watch

I used to edit out bleed, but I found a lot of the "juicy" body of the production was lost... anyway, thanks for the tracks. Where would be a good place to upload the finished mix? I'm not a PLAP member (due to finances) but I'd like to share my mix :)

you were shouting a little too much playing havoc with my speakers again Warren, maybe because you had the headphones on,maybe open backed would be better or semi- or just turn down the mike. Just listen to this vd on a laptop and tell me what you think!....Thanks! I like the shuffly beat.

Mary, you hit the Lotto Jackpot having this guy mix and produce/engineer this cut. Work with him again, when you can. Warren and you are a great team for getting you heard by a much, much, much larger audience.

Awesome video, Warren. Wow, this is a very good example that it does not necessarily needs a big studio stuffed with top of the notch equipment to make a good production. It proves that at the end of the day, a wonderful song, awesome artists and a great performance are the secrets to capture a great song. Thanks to all who's been involved to bring this to life and share it with us.
