How to *NOT* install the TEC fork springs for the Triumph Speed Twin

  • Everyone keeps telling me I'm supposed to hate the suspension on my 2019 Triumph Speed Twin. They can't all be wrong, can they? I've been fine with it so far, but Triumph certainly left some room for improvement. In this video, I explore upgrading to the progressive front fork springs from TEC Bike Parts, but they'll have to make it past my mechanical butterfingers first...

    Fair play, most of us learned the basics of loosening the pinch bolts before trying to remove the caps before the internet and so we didn’t video our mistakes to show the world. Good effort just like the rest of us!

    A 'torque wrench' is used for tightening 'UP' a nut or bolt.
    A 'breaker bar' is for loosening a bolt or nut.
    Lesson over.......

  • @felixspecker2173
    @felixspecker2173 4 года назад +13

    You might just need to loosen the top yoke bolts first. Then the top caps should loosen up way easier. Also you could use a breaker bar instead of the torque wrench. Dont give up, I wanna see those springs in that fork.

    • @peterford9369
      @peterford9369 Год назад

      True, I guess I assumed he did that. I honestly didn't think the caps need to be that tight because u have pinch bolts on the caps. Good catch.

    You shouldn't be using a torque wrench to remove anything. You should use a breaker bar or wrench. Once it's loose, you can use a ratchet but never to break it free.

      Toruque wrench is a measurement tool, not a wrench, as might have already learned the hard way. :D good luck. don't give up.

    Hey there, struggles shared i just changed the TEC fork springs yesterday on my Speed twin. It was really hard to unscrew the cap, I had to loosen top yolk bolts first (I figured out somehow, because as you said no one speaks about it),then it was really easy.
    The second trouble was to put the cap back. There is a lot of tension ( the spacer comes out of the fork) so you need to both push and turn the cap with extra care by hand (the first one was challenging). I notice on their website, someone asked for shorter spacers (20 mn too long apparently) and i understand why. Hope this will not damage anything in near future.
    It really changes the bike, first braking and you will see no more pumping, lot of progressivity added, totally worth it !

    After reading the comments pertaining to this video, I wil not mention anything about how not to use a torque wrench and the need to loosen the pinch bolts first. I do, however, want to suggest the use of 6 point sockets to protect the surface finish of the hardware. 12 point sockets just don't get it especially when aluminum or soft metal fasteners are involved. Also, the use of adapters should be avoided at all costs.

    About your…tip over and practically destroying your bike. Do you think crash bars, the ones I see on Bonnie’s would have prevented any damage??
    Maybe the lower case?

    • @VanBlamm
      @VanBlamm  2 года назад

      Bars may have prevented the damage, but I really don't like how they look. I'd frankly rather look at my bike with scuffs on it than with dresser bars on it. However, I definitely should have gotten some of those low-profile case protectors when I first got the bike. Now I'm not as inclined to invest in protecting a case that's already damaged, but I may still get them.

  • @200Fathoms
    @200Fathoms 4 года назад +1

    Yeah, I don't think you're supposed to use a torque wrench to loosen things. Doesn't have to be a wrench-you could use a breaker bar with the socket, like you would typically do to loosen the nut at the rear axle when adjusting chain tension.

    I weigh 160 LBS and the stock suspension is absolute crap on anything other than glass smooth roads. I'm sick of getting bounced around all over the place and the bike just refuses to hold a line over mid corner bumps. Front and rear suspension are going to have to go unless I just sell the whole bike. I'm really thinking about going back to a Monster.

    It takes a certain level of ineptitude to break a torque wrench. Kudos on that. I dont own a speed twin, rather a speedmaster, which is equally unimpressive in the front suspender department. I can, and have, lived with it for a year or so but it is something that will be addressed very soon. Being neither svelte or young, although not a deal breaker, I am disappointed that a bike costing 13000+ of my finest English pounds is so lacking in quality in this one area. Hopefully I will have more success than you when I attempt the modification, probably not if I'm honest. Stay safe from the Mother Country.

      I've used it several times now for chain maintenance and haven't noticed any issues. My gut tells me it's okay because the two wide rubber pads spread the weight out, but I'll definitely keep a closer eye on it.

    • @Mindamasta
      @Mindamasta 4 года назад +1

      I have the tidy as well and although it looks okay, the screws for the license light was too long which I found out after the fact. I was able to fix it by adding a rubber spacer but the center bolt for the tidy is not centered at all, I tried my best but it’s at a slight angle.

    • @VanBlamm
      @VanBlamm  4 года назад +2

      I found the same thing with those screws. They haven't created any problems yet but I've thought about fashioning some rubber spacers too. I like TEC's ingenuity and prices but the quality is hit or miss.
