Picked up a SRPD71K2 and absolutely love it. I reach for it on most weekends and I have received compliments from friends that usually wear Rolex and Brietling’s. The rubber strap looks really good in person too plus it’s super comfortable. No regrets.
I think that in terms of style, the 5KX with the faux aged lume and black dial looks better than any version of the SKX I’ve seen. I think I’d heavily consider one if it was a little smaller or cheaper. Personally I’d prefer a modded SKX013 or any number of improved parts compatible homages. Great video Oleg!
I don’t think Seiko is marketing the 5 as a diver, which it clearly isn’t. It’s a sports watch styled like a diver, an aesthetic that many people love. If you want a true dive watch, Seiko make that too and you have many choices from the Prospex line up to much higher price points. Great job on the videos, cheers!
I love the comparison between the SKX and the favorite jeans, I feel the same way. While he SKX has so many flows, I still love it and it’s a perfect watch in its own way. I did own an Orient Mako USA II for very short period. The Orient was superior to the SKX in every way, but at the end, I decided to keep the SKX instead.
Had an skx, modded it then sold it for the much better Turtle. I'd choose a 5kx over the original now, the skx was good in its day but its day has passed. Cheers 👍🏻
I totally understand where you're coming from, but let's be honest, very few people use watches to a even a fraction of their capabilities. People moan about less than 100m water resistance whilst never even getting their watches wet with rain.
IMO if you buy a watch only relying on specs, you don’t buy the right watch! You buy it because you fell in love with it! thats why the SKX wins! Because let’s be honest, the SKX movement is a 5 and the 4R36 is the new standard!!
I recently got myself a Seiko 7T42 7A50 Olympic Edition, i was searching very long for this watch and got really lucky that someone was selling a bucket full of old watches and found that particular one inside there, i paid only 5$. I really like the old Seiko watches from the 80/90s. So far that's my most favorite watch i got in my collection.
Purpose category, the SRPD definitely suffers due to the water resistance and crown but in terms of cool factor, I'd say it turns more heads and gets more compliments from non-watch enthusiasts. The SKX has only gotten me praise from people who know what it is 😂
Just looking into this watch. The screw-down crown is not a big deal to me with the upside of the better movement and hacking. The new model should be sapphire glass and ceramic bezel though. I gotta figure out if I want to mod one or buy an Aragon.
It looks like your scoring system is objective but it’s really just you explaining why you like the SKX more. I don’t think it’s objectively better than the Seiko 5. Great video though, thank you!
Excellent review, the only things I'd change, are design, I would make it equal as they're the same so SKX being the original doesn't make the 5 SRPD worse, it makes it the same. The other is the cool factor. I would swap the scores. It's not cool to have to shake your wrist to get your watch started and it's not cool to not have hacking. I know it's part of the movement category, but still I don't feel cool shaking a watch to get it going. Just my opinion!
Blasphemy to some I know, but I prefer the Heimdallr SKX homage over either one of these. Amazing value, and my white dial version is just so pretty and ridiculously accurate to boot. Cheers bud.
@@jesterxfan Cool, I've been thinking about getting that one as well as I don't have a black dial diver yet. I kinda want a Speedy homage instead though, maybe they'll do one of those in the future, we'll see. Enjoy!
Whats your opinion on the bracelet? Its surprisingly heavier than the regular oyster looking bracelet. I bought one on a whim yesterday and love it!! I have a 1989 grand seiko sbgs001 on the same bracelet that came from an early 60s seiko bambi. To me, its a MEGA throwback look for this brand and I dig it. Edit: I liked your impact water example. I went cliff diving last weekend and wore a swatch >.> but because we get super beat up on the rocks climbing up there haha
The logo on the orient watches killed it for me. I purchased both a Kamasu and a”blue ray 2” from Amazon but i ended up getting an SKX as i actually felt self conscious about the orient logo being a little too “big”. Just my personal opinion.
People who say I'd never get a diver's watch because I don't go diving are probably the same people who say I don't buy basketball/running sneakers because I don't play basketball or run, but have them on their feet. 😂 Both of these watches are pretty good to have in your collection. Great video. Got some great information. 👍
I have an 009 and an 007. I put sapphire crystals in both of them shortly after getting them and both of them are on aftermarket bracelets. I love them I devote a total of four SKX watches. Got them both for exactly $200 before the additions/mods...They are a great value for an iso certified diver. Modding them makes sense Because of what you’re starting with...It’s an iconic dive watch....The 5KX doesn’t make sense to mod… Because of what you’re starting with...It’s a ‘dive style watch’ And no matter what mods you do you can’t make it a true dive watch And you can’t add a screw down crown or improve the gaskets... The gaskets in the 5KX or smaller and thinner… And from what I’ve watched from professional watchmakers the SKX 200 m gaskets won’t fit... Thank you for pointing out that 100 m water resistance is not what people think, and it is not enough
I’m watching this knowing I am probably never going to pick up a 5kx since there are so many older model Seiko 5’s I want to own. Also, I am currently fawning over my SKX011j, the one SKX to rule them all...my precioussssssssss!😆
The biggest problem I have with the SKX and the 5KX both is the price. At around the 200-250 mark they are great value, but above that, there are simply better-specced alternatives out there. Hell, there are better-specced alternatives for considerably less.
On the U.K 🇬🇧 market you can buy them for around £250 each. Maybe cheaper if you spend a bit of time online. Seiko should do some significant improvements and they are only proud of their brand. But is is only my private opinion.
Cracking comparison brother....it is amazing how they stack up....the WR is fine for my needs....I like the many dial options that is a refreshing change....if this stays in your collection for long enough I think a 12 month comparison video would be interesting, especially to see if there is a larger gap in your scores and if the winner changes....⌚🏴⌚🏴
I've only recently gotten into Seiko watches, and my first acquisition was the SRP779K1 Pepsi Turtle; I opted for this model over the SKX because it has hacking and is hand-windable - and I love it! It always puts a smile on my face when I wear it ))
I paid $209 after CC rewards for the Seiko 5 srpd63 in green from a AD. Was looking for for a watch that was a touch classy and to find a "dive watch" that emphasized visual appeal more than someone taking a SKX or Seiko 5 and their lives to even 100 meters. LIke was said early in this video and this is my guess and IMO, that less than 5% of SKX's have ever been used as a serious dive watch. Moan the loss of the SKX but me thinks they might bring out a line of $250-500 dive watches positioned a $100 or so above the current Seiko 5 line. YMMV
In Canada just wait till HBC drops the price from time to time, to $250 or so. That's what it cost me. It's different than the SKX but a good watch nonetheless. Good movement, nice look, not a diver, so what.
If they made the new Seiko5 line with 200 meters water resistance it would be better as the build quality might not hold up as well doing water sports or diving.
Great video and a timely topic for a "comparison video" in the crazy watch world today. You hit on a lot of the same valid points and comments that I had made as well. I still believe that the ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT has taken over Seiko, but the President doesn't know it yet. 😉 Seiko's sister company Orient, is laughing all the way to the bank with their current updates and the releases that I believe will be coming down the pipe in 2022. Personally I think the SRPD is the better watch. Well the SKX is great, and has some major advantages over the psycho five, it’s not nearly as versatile. Masego five line comes in multiple different versions, even the sportsman collection has both Dave style watches and non-dial style watches and can pass for address watch both with the rotating vessel or without the rotating bezel. I do not think the SKX could do the same thing due to the way the bracelet is designed. You also don’t get nearly as many varieties with the SKX that you got with the 5K X. Not just in terms of band choice, but also color selection and whether or not you wanted a rotating bezel. Plus the 5KX has a significantly upgraded movement with hacking and hand whining. The Seiko SKX doesn’t have that. Having said that if you like the SKX, I would highly recommend not going with a Seiko version and instead getting one by a company named Heimdallr. Reason being is that it’s identical in almost every way to the Seiko SKX except it has the movement from the 5KX and instead of the days being written in both English and Spanish, it’s In English and Chinese
Specs aren't everything. Seiko has a lot of experience making watches and in comparison to micro-brands they produce watches that are very likely not to have the kind of mistakes that turn up on watches from inexperienced watchmakers. I just bought a Heimdallr Monster, which has better specs by far than the original SRP Gen 2, but when it came time to resize the bracelet, well, the experience will leave psychic scars that last a life-time. The Heimdallr is a pretty amazing achievement for under $200.00, but it comes with a band that's almost impossible to re-size. The tolerances for the pin & collar links and the end links fit into the the lugs are just off enough for a nightmarish re-sizing experience. That kind of thing reminds that thoughtful, well tried design of the details that you get with a watch from a long established manufacturer may be more important than paper specifications.
