Really great overview. What makes the SKX so great for me is that it's one of the last dive watches designed for actual diving-and not fashion. At least for the price point. If you want all of the modern specs like sapphire, hacking, winding, cermamic bezel, etc. then the SKX won't do if for you.
The SKX in 2022 is for the romantics. All of its imperfections are what appeal to me. I have zero intention of modding mine or upgrading the movement. I love it just the way it is because there's nothing like it anymore.

All pricing is based on market demand. There are people who will point out that certain makes and models of cars are overpriced yet the prices stay relatively fixed and people continue to buy them at those prices despite all the maintenance problems that may come with those luxury cars. I purchased my SKX for around $200 and while I didn't specifically buy it as an investment, I am pleased that it has appreciated in value from when I bought it. For me, it has turned out to be a wise purchasing decision. So when I hear people say that it's overpriced, my only response is, "Don't buy a Seiko SKX. It sounds like it's not for you." There is an entire world of Casio G-Shock or Timex Ironman watches out there that are priced exceedingly well (less than $60) for what you're getting. Any of those watches would give you reliable and accurate timekeeping, WAY more accurate than any mechanical analog watch. But if you like the Seiko SKX (or any other watch for that matter), go out there and BUY IT! Don't let ANYONE tell you what you should or shouldn't do. If you like it, go get it.

Very true. As a new collector I love the look, but not paying the inflated prices right now. And as is mentioned in the video there are many technically better watches. So for my two cents I can't justify picking up a watch this dated. The Mini Turtle seems impossible to source outside Japan, so I'll probably go for the Prospex Padi Samurai as a diver.

@@Badabinger I can understand that. I’ve been seriously collecting for ten years now. In the early days, I spent a lot of time researching to get the best possible value for my money. Now that I’m deep into the hobby, I have plenty of spec across my collection and I recently re-bought an SKX I’d previously sold purely for posterity. I’ve had most of the more common SKX derivatives over the years. it’s a reminder of simpler times.
As an aside, I can understand why people want a hand-winding movement, but I’m not really sure what all the fuss it about hacking seconds. I have a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms that has a high horology movement, keeps to within less than +1 SPD but doesn’t hack. I’ve never given it a thought.
One complication I have come to enjoy recently is a power reserve indicator - brilliant! but again, I’d never missed it until I bought a piece that had one.

I honestly believe that the only thing the SKX had of impressive was the diver certification, which is of dubious value for most people (and there's nothing wrong in that). Not saying that they were bad picks, but back then and specially nowadays there were always more attainable and variable alternatives, like the Orient trio Kamasu-Mako-Ray and some Citizens - not to mention Seiko SRPD themselves, of course.

Because the turtle is too big for me. The amount of modding possibilities, the quality of the case, the great OEM seiko dials available, make this watch a must have if you want a custom made watch with quality parts in a branded case.

I have 3 skx. 007J &007K and a 009J. I have 2 sumo hulk spb103J Last Gen. I have a king samurai, King Turtle Dark Manta, Monster Penguin , Baby Tuna Urban Safari. A willard. A meh Kamasu 2 green sunburst. If you are looking for an skx please please get the real thing, you will start collecting trash trying to buy those recommended alternatives. If you are buying an skx in the first place, you are looking for its iconic status not the best specs. The sumo does pack the bang for the buck as it is cheap and is 6R35 with 70 hour power reserve. Kamasu 2 is not a dang close to the Skx it is a very big disrespect. The sumo hulk screams submariner and is beautiful perfect for all wrist sizes. Fits small wrist like me at 6 1/4 inch. The bezel on my kamasu 2 is really clunky. I feel like people want to score an skx and is trying to lower the prices nowadays and sell there alternatives 😂.Yesterday I bought 2 in a box skx with jubilee and a militat oyster straps and all my special editions and LE bow down to it like a Queen of watches next to 👑 rolex. No comparison. There is a reason it was a hit and even though 3 decades after is sought after . How could a mass produce watch increase in value after being made unlimitedly for almost 3 decades? It is icon how come? It was an icon because it was simply amazing.
Rolex Submariner and the SKX are on same wavelength just on opposite spectrum in prices. In asian countries, you will find it selling at very low prices. It just a matter of preferences. Join FB groups such as Seiko 5 collectors etc. My goal is to complete all skx from 01-55.

I agree with this video, the whole point of the skx was to be an “affordable” Diver. If it no longer sits in this category due to Market inflation then it defeats the point. if you are entering the Hobby I’d point you directly at a Islander an affordable “diver” that has current modern standard specs. If you are a die hard Seiko collector then this doesn’t apply to you.

  • @ChapeauRouge921

Upgrading the movement to a hacking and hand-winding movement (NH36 or 4R36) causes one small issue. The case of the SKX was designed without having hand winding in mind. Those crown guards has a tendency to dig into you fingers. Some filing at the bottom of the crown guards can fix this.

Among mechs? Definitely Kamasu. Or pretty much anything else with WR200 on the Orient's F6 platform, not even to mention F7 or F8...
Among quartz? Definitely Casios like MDV series (excluding MDV-10, of course) or any analogue/ana-digi G-Shocks (all with WR200) and Citizens like Promaster Eco-drive series.
As someone who used to wear a 7S26-based Seiko some time ago, I don't quite get why stand all its inconveniences, let alone overpay for them.

Telling people to STOP buying a particular watch because it's objectively worse than newer models in the same or cheaper price range is like telling you to drop the hobby because your phone tells you time infinitely more accurately than any analog watch. Any time function like a stopwatch or multiple time zones is also leagues better on your phone. It's also cheaper than most Swiss watches........ It's also like telling people to not buy the Paul Newman Daytona because there are thousands of watches that are objectively better and cost a fraction of the price.... This is a romantic hobby. You should know that by now. Shame on you! lol. The SKX is an icon and has far more heritage than any of the models that you referenced. This is like half the reason some of us are in the hobby (romanticism, nostalgia, the cult following it had because of what it accomplished for its time at the price range it did so, etc). It's also ISO certified (people will debate ISO certification, but again, they're missing the point of the extra lengths Seiko went through just to get it certified) and Seiko is no longer making any of their Seiko 5 models certified. The Seiko 5s embarrassingly don't even have a screw down crown or a lumed pip. Are they really dive watches? 🤔The non-screw down crown contributed to the WR being dropped from 200m to 100m. Not a big deal but we should be getting upgrades, not downgrades? Anyway, There's far more to the story than just, "hey don't buy this, buy this instead because it's newer and cheaper".

5kx line has nothing to do with the original skx..and I'm not talking about the specs, but also about the design, the dial etc.
Seiko skx is a very good investment.
You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years...if you can find one of course. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since was produced from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectible. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx in the next years. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more...they were already sold...
Wait 5 years from now...people will be able to trade a nos skx..for a Rolex. Why? Because Rolex is still produced...while Skx is no longer produced and has become a classic neo-vintage tool.
