I showed my daughter the first episodes of 90s X-Men and Morph kind of became a running joke for us, because he was so clearly introduced for the purpose of being almost immediately killed off to establish that "anyone can die" edge. We'd break into sobbing over the tragic loss of Morph. You know, the most famous and beloved of the X-Men, Morph.
Lol
@@HaussmannComics-xd3gn (I don't think I knew that Morph eventually came back from the dead and had a whole arc thing)
Hulk and Darkseid are the original leaders of the X-Men! Facts!
Apparently you forgot that after a hiatus following the sixties run of the Uncanny X-MEN comic they returned in the 70's with the new team led by Cyclops featuring WOLVERINE, Nightcrawler, Storm, Sunfire, Banshee and Proudstar (who died in his first appearance.). That book went on to become quite popular featuring art by Dave Cockrum and later John Byrne!
@@LSOK38 I didn't forget, I was only covering the first ten X-men, Giant Sized X-men came 5 years after Havok joined the team
The spot on Hank Hill impression out of nowhere is great 👏
it's crazy how neither Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Colossus and Nightcrawler are even in among the first 10
But they are counted for the first 15
They don’t join until the original team are capture, besides Cyclops. Cyclops thought the team died and that’s how the Madam Pryor shit happens; and how X-Factor is introduced.
I mean not really. Thought it was common knowledge that angel, beast, cyclops, iceman, and jean were the first.
@@rtv1591 nah, it is CRAZY
@@rtv1591people who have read the comics would have known it.
Beast and Sunfire are still mutants. Radiation may have predisposed their parents to have mutant offspring, but they are still mutants, born with the mutant gene and detectable as mutants.
How about Mimic or lighting lad? I heard that they DON'T have X genes in their system.
Same with Mandrill and Nekra! Fun fact: as a precursor to his actual mutant powers, Mandrill was born with African-American features despite being born to White parents. The inverse for Nekra.
The same as Franklin Richards. Mister Fantastic and Invisible Women are human with power from space radiation. Then they had Valeria who is just a super smart human.

The “First X-Men” sounds like a dumb retcon, Sabretooth would never give a shit about helping other mutants. But at least they aren’t actually called the X-Men
Wolverine had to pay him to help. But he also said to Sabretooth "what if there had been someone to help you when you were a kid?" As Sabretooth's father kept him chained in the basement and pulled his teeth regularly.
But this was also during the period where they were making Sabretooth a good guy, he was even on the Avengers '59
But I agree with you completely
I think Sabertooth would jump at the chance to team up with Wolverine, just so he could betray him and let Wolverine feel like a fool.
He joined Magneto's X-Men in the A of A. The comic, of course, not that peice of crap movie of the same name.
@@joshcarter2121
That's a whole other universe with a whole different history, so it kinda proves the point, since Sabertooth prime wouldn't be the one to do that.
@@gregbasore2108 theoretically the AoA was the same up until the death of Xavier.....about 20 years before the X-men comics......so Sabretooth should have had the same past until that point.
The the more you think of stuff like that the more the AoA doesn't work
1) Jean Grey was being trained by Professor X before he even started the X-Men.
2) Mutants have different genes than their parents, so Sunfire and Beast are mutants. Blade, however, isn't a mutant as his abilities are due to the infusion of vampire blood during his birth.
3) First Teen Titans would be fun......
Blade origin was human that immune to Vampire bites the Movie was so good that did a retcon him as Dhampier aka half human and vampire. Rather born as a true Vampire. And ones that born human and then turn into a vampire.
@@sophiawilson8696 In the comics, he's always been effectively half-vampire; the enzymes from Deacon Frost infused changed him into such.
Correct...Blade would be considered an Augmented Human... like Captain America, Hulk, Human Torch, and Juggernaught. Anything via virus, drug, or enchantment. Tech and Mystic powered individuals rely on skill, such as Dr. Strange or Iron Man. It's covered on the Marvel Encyclopedias....lol
No Teen Titans, please. Actually, I would prefer not to see any videos about DC Comics characters.
This is great. Your Jack Winters Emma Frost diamond callout wrecked me 😂
I've always wanted to see Mimic live action.
He would be cool
Beast has always been one of my favorites. Given secondary mutations were introduced (retroactively) through him, I'd say the whole bit of his parents being irradiated was more just the possible activation of an X-gene (it's been a while so I can't recall if his mom was already pregnant or if they were just talking to the doctor about their then-potential future baby) than the origin of the mutation itself. Then again, comics continuities tend to be pretty fast and loose, especially nowadays when they factor in the popularity (and therefore recognizability to the broadest audience) of movie versions of characters. I mean, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver aren't even mutants anymore, Juggernaut's a mutant half the time (Cyttorak, what's that), and Apocalypse's appearance and abilities may or may not have anything to do with aliens (specifically the Celestials) depending on who you ask.
Also there was the whole Earth-X thing where all more bestial characters (Wolverine, Beast, Sasquatch, Feral, Sabretooth, etc) were actually the few examples of humanity that remained untouched by Celestial tampering (which was what caused most superpowers to happen in the first place). So once again, not actually mutants at all (arguably the complete opposite, actually). Also Nightcrawler ended up being Belasco in that continuity (either the original because time travel shenanigans or a conveniently near-identical replacement, can't remember), who's actually a demon (and doesn't just look like one), so there's that.
I think I may have branched off into one too many tangents there.
I'm re reading Earth X right now actually and I'm having a much harder time getting into it than when I read it years ago haha.
But yes, mutations and origins are usually all dependant on who is writing them yes. There are many different interpretations out there for every character
I always thought Juggernaut was Magical in origin.
@@sophiawilson8696 In the source comics and in most adaptations, yeah, Cain Marko gets his powers from the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak (the same Cyttorak that Doctor Strange occasionally deals with, so yes, definitely magical), but some times they change that for one reason or another.
I absolutely LOVED Mutant X! How fitting that Havoc was mutant #10 (X).
Gotta say … I love how you describe everything! It’s a terrific blend of accuracy and sharp humor that totally works for me. And, you made me want to go back and read the Exiles, which I hadn’t ever read these past 26+ years! Thank you for the great content! 😂😂
Wow, thank you!
And exiles is so fun. I revisit it every few years. I have the entire initial run in single issues and trades. I love it
I am "I bought Giant-Sized X-Men #1" off a spinner rack years old.
I would love to go back and visit that Era as a tourist
My younger brother and I bought that issue off of a spinner rack, too! I loved the story concept: the original X-Men were captured by the mutant living island, so Professor recruited a new team of X-men to rescue the original team. I was immediately a big fan of Storm and Colossus!
oh my god
loving the retrospective on early xmen. love to see someone and their love for comics alike us.
been working on creating a comic lately so really love seeing this. got a whole lot already done for it
I like your take and vibes brother. You really seem to have that old school knowledge of the books not just the new media. Good work Sir.
I appreciate that, thank you
I loved this video! Your facts are all accurate (unlike other comic character histories on RUclips). You present at a breezy pace, adding a touch of humor without being condescending... I would enjoy watching all the future videos you proposed. If I may also suggest, the first Defenders (but only if you actually "get it" about that team) and Alpha Flight when it was the best team Marvel published (that is, the first 28 issues; everything after is unreadable).
Thank you very much for the high praise. I appreciate your feedback.

Blade/mutant? No. Deacon Frost and other "real" vampires, as opposed to Morbius, are mystical beings, not mutants or mutates.
What a fun channel! His enthusiasm about comics is palpable and I love the little digressions like "and then Hero-Man made his debut in issue #7, but oh man remember when he appeared in the 90s all wearing leather and shit?". It's like trying to bring all the fun facts at once and I love it because that's exactly what I do as a teacher.

I think mutates can be mutants, as long as they have the x gene.
No guy mutates are accidentally or experiment on. Mutants are born or have X genes.
Nope. Mutates don't have the X-gene.
Mutates are people that get their abilites by experiments or accidentally.
One of the first X-Men comics I read was Amazing Adventure 17, which re-printed the Beast origin stories/back ups. Because of that, I always assumed that it took some exposure to activate the 'X-gene', but I think the whole idea of the x-gene came along later.
@@jackwells8107That was twelve years after his first story, which was X-Men #1, which also introduced the X-gene concept. This would be expounded a few years later in Eternals.
Angel's original power: Gun
Love it. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
The first 10 actually includes Professor X, Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Ice Man, Jean Grey, The Blob, Mimic, Changeling, and Sunfire. Havok and Polaris were never X-Men while Blob was temporarily an X-Man. Now Juggernaut is an older character than Sunfire but didn’t become an X-Man until the turn of the millennium.
Blob was invited to meet the professor and Xavier offered Blob a spot on the X-men and Blob refused.
Polaris and Havol most certainly were x-men and sunfire deubed earlier but did not join the X-men until Giant Sized Xmen #1 and even in that issue he was 5th behind Nighcrawler, Wolverine, Banshee and Storm.
I really appreciate you adding the X-Men (Sega Genesis) Danger room music to the background of this video. Awesome touch
Good ear, and thanks!
If your powers are triggered by the mutant gene then i think youre considered a mutant.
Thats why blade isnt one.
I always forget Havok was on the team. Hey, thanks for this video, man.
No problem!
I think we need an X-man "recombinant" whose genes were altered in the womb giving them powers, but also has an Xgene that is still yet to be unlocked. They could do that with Beast actually.
Shouldn't Forget-Me-Not be on this list if we Changeling can be retroactively added so can FMN.
I don't think Forget Me Not goes that far back though. Does he?
Warren Worthington the 3rd Angel/Archangel is the most underrated X-Men character & WWthe3rd has a vastly underrated powerset. Archangel needs to bond with a Symbiote permanently
That would be pretty cool
Nice video. Thanks for the effort
Seeing all those villains dressed up as Egyptian pharaohs reminds me of an episode of the Batman tv show from 1966, in which Batman had to go up against a guy who thought he was a pharaoh and started committing crimes. The costumes from both the comic book and the tv episode almost look similar to each other.
Great video, subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
Great video, remarkably fantastic Hank Hill
Glad you enjoyed it, Thanks
I really enjoyed your style and delivery. I'm a fan.
Thanks
I tried to make a list before the video started - I got the first 5 + Professor X (obviously) but then stalled; I had put down Moira and Banshee but I guess they never joined officially? Or were after the others? Mimic was definitely never on my radar and I thought Polaris, Havok and Morph were all much later additions. Good video! (I hit the like button, just like you told me to :D )
"....He didn't do much except try to look cool, and getting shit on by his boss....so he's pretty relatable" 🤣
Lol
Iceman on a date with a gal and having the hots for Lorna?! Say whaaaaaaaaa?!!! Chris Claremont would never!
I was reading comics in the early 70s and these were the only X-Men back then so they'll always be special to me, including Havoc and Polaris.
Great delivery, man. Nice impersonations😂
I loved Mutant X, It was like a whole world of What if... . I wish they didn't kill off so many at the end, made it feel cheap
Just found out about your channel, I am a big fan of your content so far. Can you do a video about post-crisis retcons that were later written out (such as supergirl from krypton being a thing again)?
I think The Many First Appearances of Supergirl would be a great video for me to do......and it would cover a lot of that. Great suggestion thank you
@HaussmannComics-xd3gn yeah that seems like a more reasonable video lmao. Personally, I think a video on the different first appearances of Dr. Fate would also be really cool. Looking forward to more vids.
@@bug9591 Dr Fate is also a good one.
Please stick to Marvel. I hate DC; they're so inferior.
You should do this for the Avengers.
Fun fact: I have. I wrote and filmed it months ago but have yet to edit it up. But I imagine I'll be getting it out there in the next few weeks
The Hank Hill impression made me LOL. 😂😂😂
subbed! great video 🤜
Awesome thank you!
What about Forget me not, Darwin, Terra and I think a few more that were retconned into being “firsts”?
Darwin and the other from his group come right after the original ten. And forget me not is in there.....while his joining is retconned to earlier than him being in the comics it doesn't go back to the original days....it's not exactly specified but it's Post M-Day
I think it’s safest to say that the radiation activated Beasts dormant X-gene early, making him a mutant whereas someone like Blade not so.
Your so fun lol, I subscribed
Awesome, thank you very much
That Stan Lee Impression was on Point👌🏿
Thanks
I loved the Exiles comic run until issue 100. It changed writers and fell really flat. It was one of my favorites along with the Xfactor detective agency with Multiple Man running it.
The X-men are like an allegory for many minority communities and a mutant is a mutant, X gene or not his huge hands and feet would deem Hank McCoy a mutant indeed
I personally don't consider Mimic to have been a member I feel like if we consider him a member we'd have to also include Blob. Also when it comes to Sunspot, Mimic and Beast being mutants I feel like the scenarios they experienced just influenced what powers their X genes gave them/or awakened their X gene. Kinda like if it was dormant
Heard that Sega X-Men Ost in the background and knew instantly I was in the right place
Awesome, good ear
Awesome ideas do both
I’m one of those that do think the original X-Men was the best roster.
Great music choice
Thanks
The Sage thing was a big retcon.
It was Claremont trying to make his own creation relevant.
Which really isn't a fair thing to say considering his legacy on the X-men.....but I really.didnt care for X-treme Xmen
U forgot to mention at the end of the video that Jean Grey would inevitably die again
Lol
Scott Summers / Cyclops is the Ross Geller of the X-Men. 🙃
HA!
In the comics there is the retcon that adds Forget Me Not to the early lineup. Though that's an entirely strange thing there
I don't believe Forgetmenot goes back that far. I am looking into it though
Great episode ❗🔥💯🏆😎👍
Thank you
Well done ol' boy
Great video. I read a few of these comics as a kid and I always liked the old school version of Angel, before they made him edgier. Its a shame most adaptations use the archangel versio
love your vid
Thanks
There was that one crossover spider man episode when professor x and a few of the team talked about peter, referring to him as a different kind of mutant, and they thought a little on if they had responsibilities toward his type of mutant. So yeah, blade would a kind of mutant?
Also i think the mutants that got their powers from other origins like radiation would probably be said to have had their x gene activated early due to the physical and genetic stress of trauma.
Cyclops' original powers explanation was that his dad was exposed to radiation while flying...I believe..
Retcon... where comic canon goes to undo "mistakes" :D
Funny, I, too, always questioned Beast being a mutant. Like P. Parker and B. Banner, who have mutated, I now distinguish the two by calling those like Charles-X a "Natural Mutant."
Xmen were huge starting around the late 70's
My first X-Men comic was an original 5 x-men team up with Spiderman, I remember being very confused, since I had first watched the animated series and their costumes were wildly different. However it introduced me to Iceman, and I just fell in love with the snowman design.
Wish I had it still somewhere, but parents and throwing things out🤷♀️
Oh man if I could get back even a fraction of the stuff I had when I was a kid....
Cool video! Can you make another one for 11th-20th member? 😁😁
It's in the works
I would argue that Polaris isn’t a mutant, either. Since she turned out to be Magneto’s daughter for real, that meant that his mutation bred true in Lorna, making her the first of a new species.
I also loved the Exiles... so many good story arcs.
Its easily one of my favorite comic book runs
Angry mob: "Hey, let's all attack that guy that just vaporized a cooling tower by looking at it!"
😐
What could possibly go wrong?
To me, and this is just my theory, its likely that certain external factors activated the X-gene in those parents but it never manifested any major powers but because the gene is active the child does get major powers and for characters like deadpool they have the X gene activated later on thus them being labeled Mutant.
So Ice-Man was introduced for the first time on a cover where he's pole dancing. And people didn't see it...?
Because no matter how much they try to make it so and they pay Chris Claremomt to say it, he wasn't gay before. Period.
@@killah_disciple1exactly, they could’ve made a new character. Or just made morph homosexual.

Cyclops, Angel, Beast, Iceman, Marvel Girl, the Mimic, the Changeling, Havok, Polaris, and Sage.
Ya got me. I liked it.
Haha thanks. I appreciate it
Let's not forget the retconned into existence team of Vulcan, Petra, Sway and Darwin that theoretically fall right after mimic.
They came actually right after Havok. I talk about them at the start of the next video (which I'm currently editing)
6:26 OH BOY, they sure don't make villains like this anymore, and maybe thankfully so. HOLY COW that is a "STRONG" look.
At the beginning of the video I have to say that I don't know who the first 10 X-Men were, but the first 5 were Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman and Marvel Girl.
When I was a kid I had the very first issue. Wish I still had it - damn thing is worth a fortune now
It would be nice to still have haha. I can say the same about so many vintage Star Wars action figures
Yes that definitely makes you a mutant. Mutation before conception= Mutant. After conception= not a mutant.
Technically no the x-gene is whst makes you a mutant
@@wintertrooper7918 yes and the X Gene is there before conception that's what makes it a gene it is handed down genetically
@@wintertrooper7918 the real philosophical question is "If a woman is pregnant and is exposed to some gamma rays or some shit and the baby winds up being able to shoot lasers out of his fingers, is that child a mutant?" That's not the X-Gene because it wouldn't have been genetically passed along it occurred in utero so would that kid be a mutant or more akin to Spiderman...Fuck I need a life.

I started reading the comics in 1970. I sometimes miss that drawing style.
Mimic is actually a mutant. It's weird, but Xavier has confirmed that he's a mutant
