This was the cover of the very first Avengers comic I ever bought (because I thought it looked scary) and was also my introduction to the work of John Byrne. I still find it to be an incredibly powerful piece of art.

I would of said Wonderman. If the Avengers made him a horary member after he died. If not Simon Willams then Hercules. Stan Lee really screwed up by not having the Sub-Mariner meet the Avengers. Before he threw Cap frozen in ice in the artic sea first. Had his memory come back of seeing Cap and fighting a long side him and Bucky in WWII. Then had them both join the Avengers. Then had them go on a search for the original human Torch, Toro and even for Bucky's remains.

There is the possibility that Swordsman was 10th as he technically could count as he became a member much later. However, as we was actually a Villain at the time and joined to betray them that he might not count until he truly reformed years later. Ah, forgot about Wonder Man. Like Swordsman I wasn't thinking he counted. I never even heard of this Crescedo.

Pym's constant identity crisis makes this a harder question than it ever should be. That guy just cannot decide what alter ego he wants to be. So, do you count Antman and Giantman as two separate members or do you count them as one member who's got different aliases? It's also fascinating that so many associate Cap as an original member and having always been the leader when, really, he's actually the 6th (7th if you count Giantman as seperate) member and exclude Wonder Man as not being a true member until his revival much later.
I personally just count Pym as the Avenger. He has been on the team as Ant-Man, Giant-man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, Dr Pym, The Wasp........he's worn many hats But then if a new character takes over the mantle they would be considered a different Avenger.....like the three Thor's for example, Don Blake, Jake Olsen and Eric Masterson would be three different Avengers.....yes still Thor......actually.....I'll need to read up on that, Thor was a terrible Example

Especially when you get in deep like we are and know that there are sometimes multiple identities to the same alias, something many more casual folks don't know - to them Antman is just Antman. To us, it's like, well is that Pym, is it Lang, etc.? It's something that tends to throw my friends off, those who appreciate comics and/or superheroes but aren't diehards. I remember I once tried to explain the whole Captain Marvel/Shazam - Marvel's vs. DC's thing and they just looked at me like I was crazy. LMFAO. An excellent example of situations like this would be Robin and how, when it was announced Robin would die, the general press at the time just went with a generic "Robin"...as in Dick Grayson, unknowing that this was actually Jason Todd and Grayson was very much alive and well, and misleading casual people to believe that they were killing of Grayson, leading to misplaced outrage.

Yes, I would say Wasp is the first Avenger as well, and clearly we understand that more than marvel did, because on the cover of Avengers #1, we see all five avengers, on the top of the cover, but we only get the names for Ironman, Thor, Hulk, and Ant-man, but Wasps name isn't on, what was the guy who put those names together sexist or something...oh, wait, it's marvel in the 60's, so that's a no duh.
Have you ever noticed how, for years, all super teams started out with one or zero female members? They would add more women as time went on, but the quota for female charter members was one. To me growing up it was Fantastic 4 and XMen Marvel’s main teams. Avengers for some reason always felt like a cheap attempt at the Justice League.

Reminds me of how, in the Secret Origins story of the Justice League that Peter David wrote, Black Canary suggested The Avengers as a team name but the rest of the group didn't want to get mistaken for John Steed and Emma Peel.

Yes, I would say Wasp is the first Avenger as well, and clearly we understand that more than marvel did, because on the cover of Avengers #1, we see all five avengers, on the top of the cover, but we only get the names for Ironman, Thor, Hulk, and Ant-man, but Wasps name isn't on, what was the guy who put those names together sexist or something...oh, wait, it's marvel in the 60's, so that's a no duh.

Have you ever noticed how, for years, all super teams started out with one or zero female members? They would add more women as time went on, but the quota for female charter members was one. Until ... What was the first super team that had two or more female members in its ORIGINAL line-up? Not the Avengers, not the Defenders, not the X-Men, not the Justice League, not the Fantastic Four, not the Legion, not the Teen Titans, not the Metal Men... I'm sure someone out there knows the answer.

@@TheDanishGuyReviews There are a few teams that predate the Authority that began with two or more female members. Batman and the Outsiders had Katana and Halo. The New Mutants had Karma, Wolfsbane, and Mirage. The New Warriors had Firestar and Namorita. The West Coast Avengers had Mockingbird and Tigra. The first version of Teen Titans West had Bat-Girl (Bette Kane) and Lilith. X-Force started out with Domino and Boom Boom. But none of these were the first. Care to try again?
