Since we're counting inanimate objects as having consciousness why doesn't his clothes disappear? Or his existence on planet Earth? How could he keep food in his stomach if technically the food can forget that it was chewed and swallowed? So theft by this guy is okay since even if he steals something the universe will rewrite the property as having never been taken in the first place to protect evidence of him from ever existing?

@@lordpuller2226 - "That makes no sense."
A lot of stuff in fiction doesn't make sense. There's a reason why people talk about plot holes in movies and books.
"Also makes no sense as a mutant power if you think for two seconds."
Considering were talking about a franchise with people that can alter the very fabric of reality. A character having a passive ability that erases his existence from people's memories as well as cameras and other forms of technology seems rather tame.
"Even thematically the character is gimmicky."
      I don't remember saying he's powers weren't gimmicky.
"Quite convenient from a writing point of view, you know, selectively counting robots and handwritten notes as forms of consciousness."
Isn't that the case for most stories? The hero or someone in his party almost always seems to have a pretty convenient tool or spell on hand when it's needed.
Sort of like how the Golden Trio learn the levitation spell the same day a mountain troll is let into Hogwarts and use said spell to defeat it.
"Since we're counting inanimate objects as having consciousness why doesn't his clothes disappear?"
Probably for the same reason Chopper doesn't destroy his clothes when he uses monster point.
"So theft by this guy is okay since even if he steals something the universe will rewrite the property as having never been taken in the first place to protect evidence of him from ever existing?"
Oddly enough stealing supplies on a regular basis is how a powerful psychic realized there was someone sneaking around in their base stealing stuff. So while security cameras and whatnot may forget about him in some weird metaphorical way. The stuff he steals is still remembered and can be used to infer his existence.
"What this makes Forgetmenot is an imaginary character who doesn't really exist."
That applies to almost all characters that appear in super hero comics.

It sounds like a protagonist version of the False Hydra from DnD. A creature which removes itself and any effects it's had from the minds and memories of people surrounding it. It can break in through a window, snatch up a resident infront of their family, and said family will be left wondering why there's an unusued bed in the house.

There's a chapter book with him (or at least someone with the same power) as the protagonist. He's unable to be noticed, but Wolverine actually helps him out because he can sense him with sound and smell.
Eventually his drawings get noticed by others enough for him to actually begin getting friends at the school.
Also, there's a pretty gory fight between Wolverine and Sabertooth.

Why didn't he have people put down on paper his profile? Forgetmenot literally makes people forget him and bends perception of him but doesn't erase what has been put down on record. Nor does it remove the knowledge of him having existed or his actions/footprint he leaves behind. Charles shows it doesn't create a memory block or directly interferes with actual facts or records since charles got his sizes for the suit. But what stops him from creating a manuscript, a biography, a statue or a basic profile on forgetmenot? Basic proof he exists without direct visual imaging should sidestep the cognito inhibiting, and would be a nice in your face calling card when he wishes to be remembered.

Perhaps not always, but at some point once he joined up, the things they passed off as coincidences, or luck...that was him. He was doing his thing, making things better as he could, no one could remember he existed...he just did his job.
That is bonkers. BUT if the prof knew of him and set an alarm, why did he make no real effort to clue in at least some of the members of the xmen, at least the ones that had psychic gifts.

I have a very similar character in my dnd campaign, inspired by There Is No Antimemetics Division. He became immortal, because Death itself couldnt remember him. In that world gods' powers come from their thrones, and in the great battle where they all fought for theirs he just went and took one and nobody noticed. That was until my campaign's bbeg, who has free reign over the realm of dreams, noticed him. Because of how weird memories are in dreams he managed to remember him, which lead to the guy joining the bbeg and just giving his throne over to him since it is the first time in centuries he had any connection to another person

Larry Nien came up with a similar mutant power in his Known Space 'verse. It was called "Plateau eyes" because it first showed up on the colony world of Plateau, and it only worked if the user could catch his target's glance. Then his micro-TK reached out and tweaked the guy's optic nerve, and by extension his short-term memory. Make the guy's eyes relax, the guy forgets all about our hero. But turn it around, force the guy's eyes wide open, and our hero is branded into the guy's memory.
