  • Ok I got this kit from Sam's club, I have been looking to do this for a while, but with the cost of lumber I have put off. The kit showed up in about 2 weeks, they called before the delivered, dropped it in 2 boxes on the driveway. I thought when I saw the boxes I had made a mistake, but they were well packaged boxes, had everything in there. Took me about 5-6 hours, mostly 1 person job, my wife did help some and with the most important part getting it up.
    Perfect for sheltering patio furnishings and outdoor furniture, this beautiful cedar pergola creates a lovely 12' x 10' oasis of shade. Easy to set up, it's great for entertaining.

      Glad it will help, it's pretty much like a small heavy jigsaw puzzle, but this was pretty straight forward on how to assemble, with little wrong. I have had a couple other people comment with a couple of banged up parts, seems the D10 which is the small corner wedges get banged up pretty easily but if you call the number they will send you out the parts no questions asked besides where to ship. Couldn't be happier. Thanks for watching.

    Just got the kit for the 10'x14' model and am starting to assemble it after pouring four 12"x12" concrete footing pads. Be sure that the pilot holes on the short side U1 and U2 posts face inward as it isn't real clear in the Step One addendum. It weighs around 400 lbs assembled, so I can't imagine lifting and moving it into place on the pads, so going to have to anchor one short side and work out to complete it from there. Strange that all the videos of this item show it a nice cedar-brown color as ours came with a rather odd olive drab/brown stained finish. The wood spacer block is a great idea and hope that 7 11/16" size works for my model. All of the four D10 joist ends arrived split, but BYD quickly shipped me four replacements. I noticed you added them after bolting in the joists, so didn't that require you removing the four 196 bolts and reinstalling them since both the joist and the joist end overlap and are through-secured together?

    • @RagerJackOfAll
      @RagerJackOfAll  2 года назад +1

      I agree on the weight, I did not attach mine to the concrete, I did add a small bar to one side which added a couple hundred more lbs to it. They did ship my replacement parts super fast also no questions asked. I didn't have to remove anything to put it together. I had to go back and look you had me second guessing on the overlap. lol I put the damaged ones on the bottom so I didn't have to unbolt to replace., my kit has 8 lower and 8 upper. The only overlapped ones are on the top, so If you haven't assembled yet, just leave the lower ones off, you can replace easily. You could probably just loosen the bolts on the top and slide the overlaps out as long as you haven't ran a screw thru the top yet. The measurements may be off on the 14' kit but whatever the measurement is on the manual, just make the spacer block that size. Saves a ton of time trying to measure them out. Only issue I had was since I was doing it pretty much by myself is when your putting the small beams on you may need someone below or another small piece of wood to get the small warpage out of the top rails. Some of the small screws did not align perfectly on the top, I just ran them thru where they sat, but if you want to do it right may need a little moving. Thanks for watching, hope it helped you out.

      @@RagerJackOfAll Hi Greg, thanks for the reply. Since my narrow width is the same as yours, the same size spacer block should work. You mentioned the measurement indicated in the manual, but my manual has no mention of what the spacing should be - which is a definite faux pas on BYD's part. Also, many of my purlins are quite bowed, and a couple of the joists are somewhat warped, as well, so it should be interesting to try and align these with the straighter ones when I get to that point. I used Behr Premium transparent outdoor wood finish over the olive born stain and it improved the appearance slightly, but still not sure why mine arrived that color rather than the actual "cedar brown shown in the company photos and in your, and other's, videos. Overall, I'm happy with the pergola so far, other than the few issues mentioned. Thanks for your informative video - we all appreciate it who own one of these BYD pergolas.

      @@richardheilman6280 No problem, I know if nothing else BYD did respond instantly and had no issues sending out the couple parts I needed. Who knows how long these have been sitting in boxes though. I had a couple small warps but nothing bad, like I said had a few of the small beams at the top that didn't line up perfectly probably from the small warps but nothing that was obvious from the ground. Thanks again for watching.

    • @RagerJackOfAll

      No you can put it in the grass or anywhere, I would suggest putting a "footer" in if you do it in the grass to keep it level. Can get a 5 gallon bucket from Lowes / Home Depot and a couple bags of concrete. Dig the hole for the buckets and fill them with concrete will give you a level base.

    Looking thru the instructions, i noticed it doesnt tell you how far apart to space the 12 cross boards uptop...how did you come across the 7 11" measurement? Just guessed?

    • @RagerJackOfAll
      @RagerJackOfAll  Год назад

      Measured and divided... Take the width of the cross boards x however many you are using, then measure the length of the boards you are laying across, subtract the thickness of the boards from the beam you are laying on will leave you the "open" space then divide by the number of boards. I'm probably off a 1/4 - 1/2" on one side or the other but can't tell by looking on the ground. You can always just sit them in place before you attach and space them out. Thanks for watching, hope that helps a little.

      No I left it open. Mine is over a hot tub so we wanted to keep the top open. I did start to add a bar to one side and will probably wall the other side for a little privacy from the neighbor. I'll do a video on that but will be a couple months before I have the time to work on it. You could probably easily put either a canopy of some sort or even get the roofing panels like at lowes and even roof it. It is pretty heavy duty, I think it would support a light weight roof easily. Here was what I was looking at when pondering myself.

    I’m thinking of getting the 12x20 kit. 6x6 posts, do you know if they are solid? Also I can’t bolt it down cause it’s going on pavers. It says it weighs 700lbs. I can imagine it moving around. Also did you seal it for weather protection? Thanks! Awesome video!

    • @RagerJackOfAll
      @RagerJackOfAll  2 года назад

      They are actually wrapped with 1" cedar, the interior posts are 4x4 or 6x6. They are very solid, don't think you will have a problem with them moving. I built a small bar on the side of it adding another couple hundred pounds to it. You could probably pull the pavers and secure to the ground and re pave but mine is sitting on the concrete not anchored. Once assembled it is quite solid, I was worried about it being a kit but by the time you bought the lumber and cut, decided to get the kit, glad I did.

    Do you think this pergola would hold a full array of solar panels? I was looking at the 14x20 version of this one but It would have 800lbs+ on top with solar panels and superstrut framing.

    • @RagerJackOfAll
      @RagerJackOfAll  Год назад

      I wouldn't do it... At least without some major reinforcement. I think since its only sitting on 6x6 posts it would topple over with that kind of weight on it. If you got creative and made some sort of cross beams or found a way to reinforce the foundation maybe, but even then not sure its a good idea. If it tells you anything about the cedar my Rottie chewed half way thru the post trying to catch a Lizard, took her all of 2 minutes... Thanks for watching, but think you need to go with treated lumber and paint or wrap with cedar planks.

    • @simonsays8935
      @simonsays8935 Год назад

      @@RagerJackOfAll This pergola is made with cedar wood... so they say... they don't actually say which cedar it is tho. The treated lumber isn't as good as it used to be from what I heard. I have treated wood on my back deck and it rots out to soon(within a few years). I was told that the chemical that used to make the treated lumber last a long long time was removed and not used any more due to enviromental concerns. I am looking into pavilion/pergola style with a sloped roof. I was hoping that this would be able to be a great support but from what you say... No Way!!!

      @@simonsays8935 Its Cedar, but a really soft cedar. If you look at some of the reviews you will see one of the bigger complaints is damaged wood. I had 2 of the end pieces that were damaged, basically crushed, and if you overtighten the bolts you could easily drive them right thru the wood to the other side. The company is awesome, sent me out the replacements at no charge had them in a couple days. But the price tells you that it's not the "best" wood you can buy. The treated lumber is still treated lumber, no different than ever. It does have a lot of chemicals in it, and you have to wait about 3-4 months before you should paint it so the chemicals dry out. But again, my dog is a good size dog, but tore that post up like it was a squeaky toy. It is solid, and it keeps the sun off of you but I wouldn't use it to capture the sun. lol

    I have been looking to get this, is it free standing or bolted down to concrete?

    • @RagerJackOfAll
      @RagerJackOfAll  2 года назад +2

      Mine currently is freestanding since not 100% sure where I'm keeping it. If I keep it on the concrete I will anchor it down. It comes with plastic feet, I think Home Depot has some Steel ones I would get to anchor it with. But it is heavy enough not to worried about it moving. We are just outside of Myrtle beach, just by being here for 20 years I'd say would sit thru a Cat1 Hurricane and not move since it is an open structure. Anything more than that would want it anchored. If you are planning on putting it in the yard, it may be different, I would probably pour some 12" pads about 2' deep and anchor in the grass, the beams really aren't long enough nor do I think made to put below ground.
      Hope that helps without too much extra in there. Really happy with what I got, was expecting less.

    Is this free standing or did you anchor the posts?

    • @RagerJackOfAll
      @RagerJackOfAll  2 года назад

      I left mine free standing for now. Lowes & Home Depot, Amazon, etc... sell a better post base than the plastic ones that came with it. If I end up bolting it down I will use those. I ended up building a bar attached to one side and going to close off the other side. With the added weight did not feel I needed to drill my concrete. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, link to the concrete bases below, maybe not that particular one, but steel or metal, I think the plastic would just end up breaking.
