Note: These shoes were a gift for review. All opinions are honest and my own.
I love the look of all the Origo shoes. I was hesitant about the width but good to know these are wider than the gen2.
The Gen 2 is wider than the Gen 1, and these are just a HAIR roomier (not wider, per se) than the Gen 2. They did something different with the lace area that created a little extra room inside the shoe. That could create a little more "give" in the shoe and translate to a "feel" of being a hair wider I guess; but the soles are the same, so not technically wider.
@@barefootshoejosh Sometimes they give a shoe more depth and that makes it feel wider. For example, the Altra Lone Peak wide and regular are actually the same width but they gave a lot more depth to the wide somehow. I guess making a completely different last for wide just be expensive.
@@mamabear9389 right that's kind of what I meant to say. I could notice the fact that they were roomier when I wore them, and had to tighten up the laces a bit actually.
Just wanted to watch a video about origo shoes i ordered and it was really interesting to listen how you explain stuff with such an enthusiasm. And i subscribed and liked the video. Keep it up and you will get a Golden Youtubu button!
Glad you liked the video! I like these Retro Sneakers; but their new Generation 3 Everyday Sneakers are my new Origo favorites! I hope you used my link and/or discount code so you could save some money and help me out! Tell me how you like your shoes!
Love your reviews Josh. Great vibe.
Oh thanks for saying that--I'm glad you enjoy!
Origo's shoes are perfect for the price, but I wish they had wide versions. I'd buy a pair in a heartbeat.
They work for me, but I would like a wider option too.
@@barefootshoejosh is it still wider than non-barefoot shoes? Like mid way?
@@barefootshoejosh also why are they bad for skateboarding? Because they are pricey and thin? Like I obvs wouldnt try to do tons of ollies at a park and damage but it should be okay for commuting on a board right?
@@Tribuneoftheplebs oh yeah 100%. Even if you go buy a non-barefoot "wide" width.. these will be wider.. These are upper-medium width on the barefoot shoe spectrum.
I wear a fairly substantial orthotic from a previous ankle injury. I use Altra Lone Peak 8s just fine but I wondered if this shoe could hold an orthotic. Thanks.
I am not overly familiar with orthotics or how they work in shoes, how much space they take, etc.. but my guess is that if they work in Altras, they would work in these.
Yo Josh, great review. Loved the enthusiasm. If Origo had you as a salesmen, they’d set records 😄
Thank you.. haha I probably just had my coffee before recording the video LOL
@@barefootshoejosh Well it worked for me! Just ordered a pair of these retro sneakers the other day with your code! Thanks homie 😁
@@brandanscheller Haha cool.. enjoy man!!
I really want to buy these shoes, but on their website, the sizing chart says that the width of the shoe is like 3.6" wide...that's not even the width of my foot! Am I missing something or measuring wrong?
These are tricky. I checked the men's size 11 (my size) on the sizing chart and it says they are 10cm wide. My feet are 11cm wide, and these fit fairly comfortably. So either they are underestimating the width (to be safe?), or the shoe's roominess and flexibility of the sides accommodate feet that are wider than the measurements they list on the chart. Not sure which.
If you really like the style--and if their return policy makes sense to you (I haven't reviewed it honestly) -- origoshoes.com/pages/shipping-returns --maybe give them a shot and see how it goes.
If not, I'll be coming out withy my "widest barefoot shoes" video sometime soon. In the meantime, check out my reviews of Softstar shoes' primal line, Bohempia (their wide width), Luks, Freet, and Be Lenka.

Are these true to size? Im a US 11.5 and luckily they have those at the moment but i want to make sure if i should size down or up half a size or stay true to size
"True to size" is a little bit of a subjective term, but in my opinion, yes, they are true to size. Best thing to do is trace your feet, measure your foot length and width. Look at Origo's sizing chart for men, and make sure the inside of the shoe has enough for your foot, plus maybe 1.2-1.5 cm or so extra length so your toes have a little extra space. That's my two cents on sizing, hope it helps. If you end up getting something, please use my affiliate link: origoshoes.refersion.com/affiliate Thanks in advance--it helps me out!
I have really low volume feet and usually have to tighten down my laces a lot, should I size down in these?
I wouldn't size down. Find the one that fits your width, and gives you maybe 7-15mm extra length. Tighten the laces. If that doesn't work, there are some narrower brands out there that might help with fitting your volume, but I don't know enough about your feet to know.
Origo’s shoes look really nice do know if they ship to the Uk
I'm not sure, but I don't see why they wouldn't... best thing is to ask them directly.
I bought some 2-3 weeks ago and haven’t worn them yet. I love the look of them and I’m so glad I bought them. What kind of socks do you wear with them? I really want socks that give your toes room to move.
I prefer not-so-tight, colorful dress socks a lot of the time; but I reviewed Injinji toe socks here on the channel, so if you're looking for toe movement, that's one way to go for sure. Here's the link to that video: studio.ruclips.net/user/videovL82owm72xg/edit
Just got my first pair! Do barefoot shoes feel a bit big at the start due to a roomier toe box? The length is definitely correct.
This is your very first pair of barefoot shoes? Nice! Expect time to transition for your feet and muscles to get used to having space and moving differently. To answer your question: if you've been wearing conventional shoes all your life like most people, then your feet have been unnecessarily cramped for decades--so yes, having enough room to spread out may feel unusual at first. Not only that, your toes might take a good while--and maybe even some intentional work--to regain their natural splay. However, if you find after some time that this particular brand is too wide for you, then you should also know that not all barefoot shoes are created equal in terms of width.. there are narrower brands and wider brands, and everything in between.
If you find that you should be much narrower, here are some that I would consider to be at the narrower end of the spectrum:
* Vivobarefoot - classic barefoot brand, high quality
My affiliate link: bit.ly/vivojosh
* Groundies - going out of business so don't count on being able to make returns; BUT you might be able to score some great deals on Amazon and/or Groundies' website right now (especially their "Sale" page: www.groundies.com/sale
I have no code or link for Groundies.
* Feelgrounds are more "medium width. I *LOVE* their slip-on mesh model. With your narrower feet, you will like them even more than I do. I reviewed them here on the channel--TWICE LOL
My affiliate link: www.feelgrounds.com/?p=feelgroundsjosh
* Merrell has a couple of barefoot models like the vapor glove that I used to love, but now that my feet have widened up over the years, they're a little narrow for me. Same goes for the Tesla Gear knockoff version which is way cheaper--I've reviewed both of these on the channel I believe--the Tesla ones for sure.. I have no code or link for Merrell, but this Amazon affiliate link will get you to the cheaper (only around $34!!) Tesla knockoffs (every bit as good as the Merrells if you ask me): amzn.to/3Aq4TtG
* Whitin is another inexpensive barefoot shoes transition/newbie shoe for around $40.. and you might like them too.. My affiliate link: amzn.to/3Aq4TtG
* Xero Shoes
My affiliate link: bit.ly/xerojosh
That was a lot of info but I hope it helps you find exactly the right shoe for you! Please use my links and/or codes where possible--it helps me out! Let me know what you end up with and how you like them!!!
Hi Josh, a few things you didn't mention:
Does the shoe come with an optional removable insole?
You didn't show or mention anything about the sole. Looks like it's a flat tread most suitable for city/streets?
Hi Christian. Yeah I noticed when I posted the video that I neglected to show the bottom of the soles. Whoops. Yet another reason to follow me on Instagram (if you're not already)! :) I always post the pic of the soles there. Anyway, it's exactly the same as the Everyday Sneaker sole tread, so if you watch that video you'll see it there, or check the Everyday Sneaker pics on my Instagram @BarefootShoeJosh ..I'll have the Retro pics up soon there too. And yeah it's pretty flat more for city/streets.. maybe even tennis, basketball, things like that I would suppose (although I don't play those sports myself). But yeah it's not a grippy, luggy, hiking type sole at all. I hope that helps!
Hey, Josh! If I like my Bohempia wide version, will the retro sneaker width bother me? According to their sizing guide, the retro sneaker run a whole 1 cm smaller than the Bohempia wide. Since you've worn both, what's your take? I got strong and wide feet just like you.
My feet are different than yours, so I don't like to give advice, or say what will or won't bother YOU. For MY feet, I find these to be more structured/firm, and they have a little less room to spread out than my Bohempia wides--as you see reflected on the two companies' sizing charts. However, when I wear them I don't really think about it. I keep them tied loosely enough so that the uppers have enough slack to flex to the shape of my feet a bit. But again, that's for MY feet. YMMV.. I like variety, so I'm glad I have both for different vibes. Best of luck!
Hey Josh, do you have a playlist, or any list, of the widest barefoot shoes?
I don't have a playlist for it, but the widest ones, from my experience are: Be Lenka and Barebarics (although these are wide, they can run a bit lower on VOLUME).. Freet, Bohempia (get the W width), Softstar Shoes (especially the "Primal" line), Saguaro, and any of the custom options can go as wide as you like--Deliberate Life Designs (sandals), Paisley Running Sandals (sandals), Prime Trotter (dress shoes), The Drifter Leather (a mix of things), Aintap Leather can do custom work too. There are reviews on all of these on my channel, and in most cases affiliate links and/or discount codes.
Thanks for the review, Josh! I don't think you mentioned this, but did you go true-to-size on these? Thanks!
Yes, in my opinion, these run true to size, and that seems to be the general consensus. If you end up grabbing some, please use my link and/or discount code (in the video description).. thank you!
@@barefootshoejosh I plan to. Thanks!
@@Timelesstyle Thank you much!
Hi, great video! How would you say these compare to the Splay freedom sneaker, I know you did a review for both, but was wondering if they fit similar? Do these have more or less ground feel than the splay? I own splay shoes and looking to get me a pair or Origos. Thanks
I would say that those two are verrrrrryyyy similar in fit to one another, and also similar in the ground feel. The Splays in my size have like a 6mm stack... the Origo's have "5-6mm" stack.. so they are also very similar in that regard. Of the two Origo shoes I've reviewed here on the channel (this Retro model, and the regular Gen.2 Everyday sneaker), my fave of the two is the Gen.2. Fit is similar, but I like the style of the Everyday better. If you haven't seen that review yet, check it out and pick the one you like better. Please use my referral link and/or discount code in either video description if you end up grabbing a pair! Thanks much!
Thanks for the detailed response and for the discount code. Keep up the great work!
have you noticed which of the shoes you've reviewed have the thinnest / softest / most flexible sole?
YES!
Sandals:
* Shamma Sandals - Warriors
* Pies Sucios - Simna Zip
* Geniale Sandale
Shoes:
* Freet Talus 3 (2.5mm)
* Bohempia - Kolda and Hoska (3.5mm)
* Tesla Bare Trek / Merrell Vapor Glove (2.5mm)
* Be Lenka - Prime and Trailwalker (4mm)
* Freet Tanga (4mm)
* Feelgrounds Droptop Mesh (5mm)
I've done video reviews for all of these here on the channel. Take a look, and if you find something you like, please use my affiliate links and/or discount codes (You'll find them in the video description for the review of the shoe you select). Thank you! It really does help me out when you do!
@@barefootshoejosh your elaborate response is highly appreciated. Thanks a lot
@@beyondabove no problem.. Also, if you're not already following me on Instagram @BarefootShoeJosh please do.. you'll find all kinds of details like this on the reviews there.
Thanks. Will do
Hey! My husband just got these, and he says they feel stiff/uncomfortable around his ankles. Will the leather soften up as he wears them? Did you experience this at all?
Mine are great. The earlier model they had(the Gen 1 Everyday sneaker) bothered me because the back rubbed on my Achilles tendon. They changed something on the Gen 2 and I stopped having that problem. On these Retros, I never had any problems. They feel like most shoes to me. That said, they are more of a "structured" shoe, which I'm sure I mentioned somewhere.. maybe this video, maybe on the Instagram review. So it's got a definite shape, and is slightly more firm, making it more suitable for things like playing sports, etc., as well as casual wear. If you like softer, more gently comfy shoes, there are some other options out there, several of which I've reviewed on the channel if you're interested in surfing around. Check out my review of the Freet Tanga, the Freet Talus 3, the Feelgrounds slip-on, etc.. for a couple of examples. Happy Hungting!
@elissa I have the same issue. I just bought the non-retro version, the Everyday Sneaker, and I have the same issue. Did your husband continue wearing them and did the shoes soften up? I’m tempted to return mine because the ankle pain is very bothersome
@@JoshKemmerer I'm curious.. are you having this issue with the Gen1 or the Gen2? And where is it touching your ankle in an uncomfortable way?
@@barefootshoejosh I believe it’s the Gen 2. I think the term is the tongue?
@@JoshKemmerer OK.. the tongue is the "loose" portion underneath the shoe laces. If that's coming high enough up your foot to bother your ankle, that would be unusual; but all of our feet are different I guess!
Kindly and respectfully suggest that you drop the upfront request to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell. To my ear, it's a turn off...let your content speak for itself.
Hey thanks for the nice note. I didn't do it at all when I started, but then I did, and subscriptions increased, so it's something of an unfortunate necessity. Although I will tell you that for the last month or so, I've been wanting to move that to the end of the video, which I will do very soon. Thank you again!
I love these shoes but the laces SUCK! Lol
I put elastic laces on most of my shoes. Highly recommended if you dislike dealing with laces for any of several possible reasons!
