    Thanks for posting a great video. I've done several trips into the White Otter area and loved every one. I found it much more rugged and remote than Quetico, and people sightings tend to be rare. Yes, there are occasional human-built structures and evidence of logging. But the rarity of people visiting the area makes up for that, for me at least. I wonder if you ever hit the north end of Sanford to visit the abandoned Tip Top Lodge? That's a real treat. And that island you circled in Sanford has a fantastic elevated campsite (provided refuge from BIG winds on one of my trips). I've also used that over-developed campsite on Wasp Lake a couple of times.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  4 месяца назад

      Yes I completely agree, the odd motor boat is sometimes better than seeing a dozen other canoe parties per day. I have only done a couple of trips into this area but I do plan on exploring it further. This trip was a bit of an exploratory trip to see what the conditions were. I haven't been to Tip Top Lodge but perhaps I'll do a bigger trip in the area in a year or two. I have other ideas for 2024.

      Hi Paul, I am a bit of a traditionalist and like the single blade but I did buy a double blade a while back when I was contemplating a trip with someone who double blades. I haven't even tried it yet. This is a full size 16' canoe with a 34" wide centre. Lots of folks in small pack boats use a double blade but the boat is more narrow and that facilitates a double blade. You might see me try it out in a future video. :)

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  11 месяцев назад +4

      Hi Chris, yes I did install it myself. It came as a kit made by Nova Craft. I ordered it online from a paddling store (might have been London Paddles). It was easy to install just a few drilled holes in the inside of the gunwales. The stressful part was cutting the seat to the right shape and lenght. :) It just moved me forward about 14-18" but it really helped to trim the boat and made it much more manageable in winds. I will likely make a video about this experience, I now realize I should have done this years ago.

      Hi Peter, that boat isn't new but I do happen to have a brand new canoe. The one in this video is a Souris River Quetico 16, it is made of kevlar and weighs only 42lbs. Good boat but the company's customer service has gotten quite bad over the years. My new one is a Nova Craft Prospector 16 in Expedition Tough Stuff which should be about 62lbs. It will likely feature in a video or two this year. Although it is heavier it will hold up to a beating in rapids. One is for my lake trips the other for anything with a bit of whitewater.

There are fewer fire crews, fewer pilots and helicopters etc. Nearly every province is busy so they can't share resources as they usually do. The only new resources are coming from out of country. This is why fire bans and some activities are being cancelled earlier than usual.

    Loved seeing the red & white pine stands in beautiful NWO! You mentioned you got a new drone - it would be great to see a video on it. Quick question though - how do you drive & operate the drone at the same time? Really enjoyed going along with you on your latest trip Kevin - thanks for sharing.

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  11 месяцев назад

      The new drone is the DJI Mini Pro 3. At 249g is a 'micro-drone' and doesn't have the same restrictions as a regular drone. In fact there are almost no restrictions. Other than privacy laws, it is 'recommended' to not fly a micro-drone near an airport. That's pretty wide open, it is small enough that if it did hit an airplane there would be no effect other than the drone likely crashing.
      Although I do have my drone operator's licence it isn't required for a micro-drone. The drone is able to position itself and stay up while I do something else. I launch the drone and position it and get it to track on the canoe or truck. I make sure there is no traffic or the sound of airplanes then I do a short 1-2 min drive or paddle. Then I stop and land the drone. It can be tricky on the highway to find two good pull off spots close to one another.

  • @davehunt9817

    Nice video! I see you hung a third seat for solo. Did running it backwards from the bow seat not work? Just curious. Thanks

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for noticing. Backwards from the bow seat did work to a certain extent but this boat is very light and even after loading all my gear forward it still wasn't trimmed properly. Gusty conditions caused the wind to take the boat. I was skeptical as the new third seat is only about 14-18" more forward than the other seat but this set up is much, much better. The boat now behaves in strong winds very well and as I am more in the middle of the boat the paddle strokes are more responsive. I should have done this years ago! This will likely be the subject of a video in the future.

    @86beeman 10 месяцев назад +1

    Hey Kevin. You may have spoken about this somewhere in your videos but being new to your channel ( saw you on Kevin Callan's channel) I haven't discovered it yet: why the second seat right behind the other in your canoe?

    • @KevinOutdoors
      @KevinOutdoors  10 месяцев назад

      Great question and a topic I hope to cover in an upcoming video. It is all about trim, how the boat sits in the water. That extra seat gets my weight a little forward in the boat and it really helps to keep the boat properly trimmed tracking straight in wind.
      If a a boat is symmetrical, as this one is, meaning it has the same shape going forward as it does going backward, it is common to paddle the boat backward when travelling solo. The bow seat is generally closer to the centre of the boat than the stern seat. So if you sit backward in the bow seat, and usually load all your gear forward you will get a proper trim. But even after doing that I found on windy days the wind would catch the bow and make it difficult to paddle straight. By adding that extra seat I move my weight a little forward and the bow isn't sitting so high. The boat is a lot easier to control both in wind and waves.

    • @86beeman
      @86beeman 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@KevinOutdoors Ah ok. Thanks. I have a 15' Swift Prosector in carbon fusion. The seats are designed to sit facing the bow. You can turn around in the bow seat to face the stern but you put a lot of weight on the front cross member. I have to call Swift and see about another seat configuration. I like Jon @LostLakes method of a Kayak paddle. Might give it a try. We'll see.
