  • This 5 part series documents a journey through the very rugged and secluded Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario Canada. This was my first trip into Quetico and I based my route loosely off of the Hunters Island Loop which has deep roots with the First Nations People and the French Fur Traders.
    Part 3 - Leaving Kawnipi and traveling through the Poets Chain. A beautiful chain of waterfalls and a cool island campsite in Sturgeon Narrows. Then on to Minn lake via the Maligne River.
    If you would like to see my route I have linked it below:

    Schmitty: LOVE the content! I skipped ahead to Part 3 due to time constraints, as I wanted to see the damage on Sturgeon and the Maligne. I'm very pleased to see that my favorite route seems to be largely unaffected, up until around Tanner. Then, to the south, seems OK as well, although I did see some damage on MInn(?). Can't wait to see the traverse up the Darky River. I had been viewing burn maps that paint a much more severe picture. On another note, after having done around 80 Q trips, I really enjoy your perspective as a first timer--some of the distance metrics, isolation phenomenon, etc., really an interesting perspective. Great editing, super distance achievement, fishing acumen, etc. You really nail it. Can't wait to watch the rest. . .

    You did an outstanding job of capturing the beauty of the Quetico for a person like me that has never been there before. I plan on paddling my first solo trip this coming September through parts of that same loop you traveled. Instead I'll be coming from the north out of Pickeral from Stanton bay and down through the Sturgeon narrows. This trip was in June correct? Was that section of repeated rapids from Sturgeon Lake down the Maligne River coming out in Tanner Lake very difficult for a 1st timer like me?? My goal is to get down to Poobah and Wink Lakes just east of Tanner Lake. What do you use for navigation other than maps...any gps of any kind?? Look forward to watching and learning more from all your videos...paddle on!!!

      Cool, glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate you taking the time to comment! Thats great you are going to make a solo run, after my first trip there was no looking back. Really opens the door for opportunities that are much more difficult with a group. My trip was in June with fairly high water. It wasnt difficult and the portages get you around the dangerous stuff. Just make sure you know what side of the river to stay on for the portages and hug it as you get close to the rapids. I believe all the portages are on river right in that section. I was actually wanting to do a night on Poohbah/wink area but didnt have enough time. I hear the fishing there is amazing so I am going to save it for a time when I can really spend some time there. I just used a nat geo map and All trails app on my phone. You can map the whole route out at home and then download it your phone. Its a must in my opinion. its easy to get turned around and having something that can show you exactly where you are and the direction you are pointing is a huge advantage. Hope you enjoy the series and feel free to reachout with any questions. Thanks for watching!

    Do you use a Thermacell to repell the mosquitos and black flies?

    Really enjoyed your video. Done that route a few times and have been to many of those lakes. Great memories!
    Quick question- What were you wearing for footwear on this trip? What kind of boots are those? They look nice! I don’t recognize them and Im on the hunt for a new pair of portaging boots to wade into the water with kevlar canoe.

      Appreciate ya watching! Those are Muck Foragers. They worked great, I had always wet footed in the past but having dry feet the whole trip was a game changer! My only complaint is they could be a little grippier on wet stuff but worked fine and I tested them hard that trip.

    • @user-vw7xo5rc8s
      @user-vw7xo5rc8s 7 месяцев назад

      You're welcome! And thanks for the quick response. I wondered if they might have been the Muck Foragers. There's a similar boot I came across out of Japan, but can't recall the name and don't trust the quality. I have been interested in the Foragers. If you wore them the whole trip in Quetico, they definitely were put through their paces and tested hard! I don't like wet footing it either. I had LaCrosse Alphaburly Pros for many years that were great. I've got Muck Wetlands now. Both of those are/were great in May or October, but can become too warm starting in June. Also, the condensation inside when it's warmer. Have been trying to find a lighter weight boot to try. Definitely like the looks of the Foragers, though I've heard similar concerns about them being a little slick on wet rocks. I'm not worried about the lack of ankle support. I have strong ankles. I may pick up a pair to try out! Thank you so much!@@SoloSchmitty

      It’s better than no support but i still needed to get my pack behind me for support. The chair itself was not enough support.
