- *IMPORTANT*: Your phone has to be both OTG & MHL compatible for this method to work.
Last year I uploaded a video on how to turn on USB Debugging with a broken/black screen. I was able to help a lot of people with that video, but unfortunately, no solution will work for everybody. In this week's video I am making a part 2 showing you a different method to turn on USB Debugging with a broken/black screen. I am not guaranteeing that this will work for everyone, but I hope that this method will be able to help more people.

All of the micro USB hubs have sold out. Thousands of people have been buying them since I made this video, so there are currently none left (that I can find at least). So, an alternative would be to buy the USB-C hub and a USB-C to Micro USB adapter so you can plug the USB-C hub into your Micro USB phone.

Did this help you turn on USB debugging?
HI Olivia! Thanks for all ur help :) I bought the the OTG to USB adapter you recommended in your video last year and connected my black screen Samsung A500F phone to my mac. Nothing. Where do I see my phone screen on my Mac?
@Lamia Ben - I don't know if I completely understand your question. Are you saying that you used the OTG cable and a USB to USB cable to plug your phone into your computer or are you saying that when you plug your phone into your computer you don't see the phone and its folders show up? Or are you saying something completely different?
You can't use an OTG cable to view your phone screen on your computer. To my knowledge, the only way to output your phone screen is to either mirror it, or connect it to an HDMI out (via a hub, like in this video), and connect the HDMI cord to an external monitor (whether that be a TV or a computer monitor that supports HDMI).
Hi Olivia. I have a Note 9 and used the usbc dongle but nothing displayed on my TV. 😒😪
@Antonio Stepp - Hi Antontio, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have your TV set to the correct HDMI input? For example, if you plugged the HDMI cable into the HDMI 2 port, but you have your TV source set to the HDMI 1 port, then you won't be able to see your phone screen. Double check to see if you selected the right HDMI port to display.
@@OliviaHenry yes, everything is setup correctly. I checked with a different phone. I guess there is an issue with the charging port. It will charge but won't connect to anything else. I even tried cleaning it with cotton on a toothpick. So I don't think there is anything else I can do at this point.
Thank you doesn't come close to the gratitude I feel. I needed to send my broken phone back to the insurance company today to avoid a ~$900 charge. I desperately needed one video on the old phone for an upcoming, very important custody court case. I was up all night trying to use every piece of software that anyone suggested. Nothing worked till I tried your "TV" trick. After squeezing and holding the phone with little glimpses of hope teasing me on the TV in between power on/off cycles...it FINALLY (3:32am) worked long enough to enable USB debugging and recover all my data. Can't thank you enough, seriously.
You're welcome, I'm very glad to hear you were able to retrieve your important files. 😊
THE ONE AND ONLY VIDEO ON RUclips THAT ACTUALLY HELPED!!! And I learned a lot about android + pc ... Thank You Olivia !!!
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could help! 😁
Olivia you are the absolute bomb!! I broke my samsung 8 phone last week and all of my photos did not transfer to my new phone as I had assumed. I spent MANY hours researching how to get my photos off my broken Samsung and becoming increasingly frustrated. att and samsung would not help me and all the cell phone repair places wanted $250 to replace my screen. Then there are other RUclips videos that are so freaking complicated and leads you to sites that again wants your money. Then I came across YOUR videos. You explain everything SO CLEARLY and show exactly what is needed! I only spent $25 on the adapter and got all my photos!!!! As soon as I connected the phone everything popped up and i could get all my apps and photos. I did not have to click anything else.. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! You saved me many tears and $$.you are doing such great service to the community.
Thank you and you’re welcome, I’m so glad I was able to help! 😁
Olivia i have a question . The first time I hooked up all my cables I was able to see my phone on the screen and unlock it with my mouse. Now when I plug everything in, it brings me to Samsung Dex and I would need a keyboard to type in my password. I don't have a keyboard. How do I get back to just seeing my phone on the TV?
Thanks for this. My USB/C Adapter arrived this morning and I've completed my Smart Switch with ease.
You’re welcome, I’m glad to hear everything worked out! 😁
Amazed to know such a thing exists
You're amazing!!! Thank you so much for this video. I don't know why it's not as popular as part 1. Great audio, great video, and great presentation. I'm happy to subscribe to your channel!!!

Olivia Henry I went ahead and bought the “dongle”. I have a Samsung Galaxy A20 I’m trying to restore. The screen won’t come on at all, so I’m hoping I can use this technique to change the settings and see if it’s even functional before I buy a new screen for it.
Your video is just so pleasant to watch and makes a stressful situation (not being able to access an important electronic device) much less miserable! I really appreciate the clear and relaxed-paced speech. Thank you for sharing this video. 🙌
Thank you and you're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😁
Hi Olivia, this is the one I needed, as my smartphone will not register on my PC until I allow USB file transfer mode. Getting the screen visible so that I could do that, was the whole thing for me. Thank you. That hub is a great little device. Thanks for doing such a great job with laying out everything so clearly, and listing links to all the needed devices, as well. You're a class act.
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could help! 😁
And thank you. 😊
same problem here my phone touch and display is totally dead and also my usb debugging is not turn on and i also have to turn on file transfer mode to access screenshots. can you tell me how you did this pls??

I spent days trying to get files off a broken screen s10+. This method worked amazingly. Thanks so kuch
You're welcome, I'm happy to hear this method worked for you! 😁
Hi Olivia, you just saved my time, my phone data file, and my life, and the last couple things i must to do is buying these type-C dongle and HDMI Cable. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could help! 😁
Hey Olivia, great vid(s), thanks! Slight shortcut made it easier for me.. "ok google open settings" avoided the hard step of getting to settings and About Phone. Also, once I got to tap build 7 times, screenshots are disabled on the 7th tap. Because in my case I guessed it was prompting me for passcode verification. Once I got that right I could then screenshot to see confirmation dev options were enabled.
Hi Olivia! Let me just start off by saying you rock thank you so much for putting all this together! I have a Huawei honor 8 Phone so I am looking to use this method. However most of the Adapters on Amazon that support MHL are saying that you need to download an app to make it work. The problem is you can’t download an app until you get access to the screen via the TV. So can you share more about what the exact specifications are we should be looking for when we’re selecting the adapter since most of the ones you linked are no longer available?
Heya Olivia, Ive been trying to work out how to get my S9+ working after I completely broke the screen and all screen functions. Also had removed the screen from the device with the intention to replace it. I then came across your videos YAY! I worked out from your videos that I could actually use my new computer monitor which has USB C connection and also USB for a mouse and even the audio connector (all after plugging all the pieces of the phone back together loosely hahaha). Another option if people have a good PC monitor. Thankyou for all your great videos!
But adding vysor after changing all the phone debugging options still does not allow it to connect as when vysor connects it asks to press ok on the phone but the phone is not able to be controlled except when its connected by the same cable to the second monitor... so I have either the ability to see the phone using the screen mirroring through cable or disconnect and plug into PC and vysor is asking top press OK on the phone which I can no longer do...
THANK YOU!! It took a few tries before it worked, but with at keyboard and mouse plugged in I'm now finally rescueing 4000+ pictures from my old phone! ... and after that i will setup a automatic monthly backup on my new phone. Learned my lesson
You're welcome, I'm glad to hear you got everything worked out and were able to retrieve your pictures! 😁
And good call on the backup. 🙂
OK, just ordered all the bits off Amazon.
About to try this. Pray for me 🙏🙏

Thanks Olivia and Thanks for your comment omg, I have a p20 pro now and wondered if it works... I WILL TRY SOON
So grateful it worked with a p20 pro.... Love the phone but the screen has broken 3 times, I can't pay 500 dollars annually, maybe the lesson will finally get through, lol!

I got the USB-C dongle. The keyboard and mouse work, but the HDMI out does not work for me. I've tried a few monitors and TVs, but no luck.
It works for my OnePlus 8, but not my OnePlus 6.
My phone is set up for charging. So whenever I connect it with pc, I need to change for file transfer for the phone even to show up in computer.

OMG! You just saved ALL the photos from my vacation! My samsung S8 had a black screen but I knew it still worked because I could hear incoming whatsapp messages, phone calls or any other sound. I tried several other methods of other videos, forums, blogs and nothing worked. The solution through this dongle requires a certain investment, but it is very cheap compared to replacing the screen. For me it was worth buying the dongle and a new phone instead of paying for the S8 repair, although it was a great phone for me.
Thank you SO MUCH for publishing this solution! I'm sure it has helped a lot of people!
Keep up the great work of your channel!

@@mylanthony Unfortunately it didn't work for the S7. Something must be really broken in it for the usb video to not work. It did fall on the corner from a 6' height to a concrete floor and is really busted up so this should not be a surprise. But when you plug it into a PC via USB it is recognized but since we can't see the screen I can't turn on access to the files to see them on the PC.
I was able to get the video or the mouse/keyboard to work on my old S5 but could not get both of them to work together so we know the hub is at least partially working. Not sure why you can't access video and mouse simultaneously but maybe the S5 has limitations.
If anyone has additional suggestions on how to get into the broken S7 to download files off of it that would be great. It is my daughters phone and she would love to be able to get her pics and other files without spending a ton of money. She's a poor, frugal, and very grateful college student.
Thanks All!

even if we have otg support some phones like mine is onplus 5 have the feature to turn off otg after 10 min of standby what to do in that case????????
Although well intended, some of the advice in this video is quite incomplete and overlooks a number of technical considerations. One of them being the one you brought up. Another being the fact that your smartphone needs to be MHL- compliant because otherwise it cannot provide an HDMI-compatible signal to an external display. Alas, I cannot offer you a work-around other than to replace the broken screen of your phone.
@Olivia Henry
So I have a LG Zone 4 with a completely cracked screen. No touch. No screen visibility. OTG works but the phone is not MHL compatible so I am not able to see it on another screen.
Do you have any advice to give me to help me enable the USB debugging mode or allow the MTP for file transfer to my computer so I can save my photos? I know I can blindly click and hope for the best but it is very hard without knowing what I am clicking. I have a single Micro USB to USB-A adapter but not a multiple port adapter which means I am able to connect only the mouse to the phone but not the mouse and the computer. BTW I really liked your vids and even though I only have the one issue and hope to not need it again soon I subbed and liked

@@hadichamas3931 I've used an adaptor ubs to micro usb(my phone was a samsung s7 edge with micro usb port). After that, your phone should automatically detect your keyboard, BUT if it doesn't, you can try to restart your phone and after that it should be visible.

I got the items. Unfortunately since the micro usb ended dongles are sold out, I purchased the usb c one with the adapter pieces. It didn't work. I think that you lose too much power with the adapter to power up the dongle. I had purchased a Samsung HDTV adapter a long time ago and it did the trick. You just had to use the tv as a monitor and guesstimate where to touch the screen. In the end it was your video that put me in the right direction and I thank you for that. I am keeping the dongle in the event that our new phones break!
Just ordered a few dongles to see if they work! Thank you so very much for this! I pray this works! Will update tomorrow (thank god for amazon one day shipping)!
please come back tomorrow!
I ordered two dongles, the USB type c shown in this video and then another type c to USB cable, and neither of them worked. I tried them on all three TVs in the house and I just don't understand why they didn't work. Oh well. It was worth a shot

@bbyraspberry - Hi, sorry for the late reply and sorry that this method didn't end up working for you. Is your phone MHL compatible? If not, then that's why it didn't show up when you plugged it into your TV. When a phone is MHL compatible it means that it is capable of outputting its display via HDMI; if it's not, then it can't.
I hope Samsung is able to fix it, and I hope you're able to retrieve your data. 😊

Hi which product did you buy? I have a OnePlus 6 but it didn't work
@Gustavo Rivas - From what I have read online, the OnePlus 6 isn't MHL compatible meaning it can't output its display via HDMI. So unfortunately, this method will not work for your phone. However, there is a part 1 to this video that may be able to help; no MHL compatibility needed: ruclips.net/video/tAChemeSbgo/видео.html

Hello
I have bought a LINQ MHL adapter compatible with galaxy s5 for 16 dollars.Connected it to my old 2010's lcd tv and it doesnt work tv continues to have no signal. What do you think is wrong?
i have a phone which i think is in a bootloop with a broken screen and need to make sure, by any chance does this adapter show the phone booting up on the tv? or does it only show up on the tv once it has fully booted up?
Last night, I was thinking about is it possible to use HDMI cable to project the screen out from a broken phone. I can't believe that you can do it! I will definitely try it. Thx for your vid.
You’re welcome. 🙂
Just make sure your phone is MHL compatible; if not, it doesn’t have the capability to output its display via HDMI.
@@OliviaHenry my broken phone is Samsung Note 4, I think its compatible with OTG. Also, the minimum requirement of the dongle must consists of one HDMI hub and one USB hub? because I'm going to buy one later on to try this work or not.
MHL is not the same as OTG. However, I looked it up online and the Note 4 is MHL compatible.
Whichever dongle you buy, it needs to have at least 1 USB port for the mouse and 1 HDMI port for your TV or external monitor.
It worked for my Samsung S21 but not for my Huawei phone which is the broken one and it is definitely turned on as the HDMI is recieving the channel but still black on the TV screen. Is there any other solutions that you could possibly suggest? Thank you so much for such an informative video, very helpful!
Thank you
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could help! 😁
Hello Olivia. My Huawei p9 plus screen was damaged . I am trying to 'see' (to turn on USB Debugging to have access thru laptop) the screen through the method you described however, its not working. I'm not getting the screen to show up on Smart TV Screen. Any suggestions?
Did you manage to fix this?
Do you know how to get all my data from a disabled phone?? I switched phones and I suppose since i stopped using my iphone it got disabled😭 went to get one one day and BAM connect to itunea
love u olivia .... u r beatifu;
This is brilliant! I'm hoping this works for me but before I go ordering the parts I just wanted to ask.. does screen capture/screen mirroring need to be manually enabled on my phone for this to work? Because with a black screen I can't do that. Thank you
Thanks. And no, screen mirroring doesn’t need to be enabled for this to work. As long as your phone is MHL compatible, it should work. Just search “Is (your phone model) MHL compatible” on Google and if it is, this should work. 🙂
Wow! problem solved! This works with a desktop monitor that has an HDMI port as well.
I’m happy to hear everything worked out! 😁
Olivia, I have a Samsung Galaxy A7 and whenever i plug usb to my phone, the smart switch said USB file transfer is now allowed and I think its because of my phone MTP hasnt allow,so now my phone didnt allow MTP option and USB debugging will the OTG to HDMI adapter help me through this?
From what I have found, you can't change your USB settings directly using the hub, like, if you plug your phone into your laptop, TV, and a mouse, I think there are too may things plugged in so it won't let you change the MTP settings. So in the video, I plugged a mouse and TV (via HDMI) into the phone to turn on USB Debugging. Then I took the phone to my computer and plugged it in to control it with Vysor now that USB Debugging was on. Then I used Vysor on my computer to change the MTP settings on the phone.
So in short, yes, the hub should work if you follow the video.
hi olivia , great video but let me ask you if you can m how can i do it in the iphones ?
Your incredible! Know one on RUclips has made it easier then you!! Thank you!
Hello Olivia. I was able to enable debugging but i still need to "pairing confirmation" the access from the phone to my PC. However, i cannot do this if the device isn't connected to the PC I want to back up files. Any suggestions?
@olivia henry, help please.
I connected everything but the TV shows my samsung s10e phone's clock, date and a padlock icon. Background all grey.
I can't view the 9 circles at all! Can't unlock the blackscreen phone like yours. How?
I tried on another working fine phone. It also shows the padlock and grey background without the 9 circles. But this working phone I could see the 9 circles on the phone screen itself thus I can unlock with the mouse. But I can't see the 9 circles on my spoilt blackscreen phone or on the TV!
Help

Hey Olivia, sup. I got a Moto G6 play with a broken screen, touch not responding, and start pin activated, that means I can’t start the phone without touching the screen. D’you know another way to solve it? Maybe a way to enable usb debug from pc, or from the recovery mode. I can see some things in the screen for a few moments, but touch is doomed :( thanks for the videos. Cheers from Chile.
