- Yesterday someone asked me how they could get their photos off their Android phone without connecting their phone to a computer; because they didn't have one. This got me thinking that another scenario where someone would want to access their phone's file without a computer would be if their phone screen is broken and stuck on charging only mode, meaning they can't simply plug their phone into their computer and transfer the files off. So in this week's video I show you how to transfer your photos, videos and other files off your phone onto an external storage drive without using a computer.
PS. In the "supplies needed" section, I forgot to mention you need a USB stick/external hard drive, but I do show it later on in the video. Sorry for forgetting to mention that. 🙃

This was after trying all the other online tips, after taking it to the Verizon store, after calling Samsung for help and after getting quotes from some cellphone places that told us the phone would have to be taken apart so parts could be replaced. You're a damn lifesaver. My cat just decided to taste my phone yesterday morning, and quite aggressively. Over the past 24 hours, I had to watch a black blob slowly overtake the screen from the bottom right corner. Still works but I can't see a damn thing.

Also, I have a question about transferring files, can I transfer my files to a sd card even though i can't see anything on my screen its just white, does it need a requirement or something to use it in the phone or just put it in works? Is that right now I dont have the sd card installed inside the phone. Also, can i delete pictures while the phone is connected to the tv? Thank you in advance.
Would this still work after you force restart your phone? I’ve tried HDMI 1 and HDMI 3 (ARC) and it just says nothing is connected. I’ve force shut down the phone a few times. My phone shows slight light in a single 1-3 pixel line across the bottom of the screen. I know it is on, but because it has been restarted does it mean I cannot connect it to the TV?

I did this to both of my broken phones and the mouse didn't show up on the screen I couldn't use it on the phone even though i can see that the mouse lights are on which means it's connected and both phones are otg compatible so? Is there anything else i can try? 🤷♀️

@@JamesDHalliday no luck 😞. Ended up sending the pixel into Google for "Repair". They sent back a refurbished phone, same model. Costs = $0 because it's covered by Google's extended warranty, because it's a known issue with motherboard/display. We're lucky to have auto backed up our data.

What if the phone/screen is broken, and the charge port doesn't work. Is there any other ways to perform the same transfer you just did? The port for where you plug in headphones still worked is there a cable to use for that port?

I tried this with the Galaxy S21+ but my monitor wasn't displaying anything when I plugged the HDMI cable into the dock.

@@SSSS-v7x still didn't manage to fix it. Luckily, I got what I needed from the phone by unlocking it with Samsung's find my device from a web browser, and then plugged it into my PC to transfer files off it

I had the same problem. I have read a lot in many (comments in) clips. These steps (pushing with thumbs, tapping, freeze method etc.) did not help me with my LCD screen issue. Or make screenshots with the OTG (on the go) cable connected to a monitor which is also helpful. For me the OTG didn’t helped. I bought a HUB in witch you can put a monitor (hdmi), mouse (usb-a), keyboard (use a usb-a to sub-c converter for the keyboard port). This did also not helped in the beginning, which is very frustrating and I already had an appointment at a repair shop. Luckily after a few hours trying to make connection with the HUB, somehow the software Dex made a connection with the HUB through the monitor. So when the HUB is connected with all the cables in it, you can press the mobile power button one time and/or backspace onetime or mouse to see something on your monitor, but normally this shouldn’t be necessary. But take note that it may take time for the software to recognize the HUB/monitor and for yourself to find the knowhows of how to make connection with your devices. Also my S21 ultra was in flight mode. If this wasn’t the case you have the possibility to go to Samsung fine my phone website and unlock your phone. So when I had connection with my HUB on the monitor I stopped the flight mode, I went to setup > accounts and back-up and made a backup of my files in the Samsung Cloud and for my pictures/movies in the Google photo app (I bought 200 GB in the Google cloud). You also have the possibility to connect an external hard drive in the HUB so then you don’t have to buy GB. Also I put the USB debugging on in the developers mode.

Awesome Vid, appreciate the help! I smashed my old phone and the screen was black with no touch. I was able to get all my data & photos back from my old phone with this method! Only thing is if your phone is locked, for Samsung Users, you have to go online and log into ur account to unlock the phone so you can actually see your screen or it just shows a lock screen with no input to your passcode. Which makes it near impossible to enter your passcode on a black screen making it a huge guessing game... Soo hope this helps some1 else!

Might be a dumb question but... I could move the files from the flash drive on the broken phone to the SD card and just take the card out of the phone as opposed to getting an external hard drive couldn't I? If its not true somebody let me know. Thx for the vid 🙏
Yes, you can move the files from your phone’s internal storage onto the removable micro SD card inside the phone.

So I am hoping to do this on a Samsung Galaxy S5... which has micro USB. I notice that the adapter you recommend states that it only allows for power charging and data transfer / synch; it expressly says that it won't do OTG or MHL. Do you think it will still work with the USB C hub?

I will try the vysor computer app when I have wifi. I will also try mhl hdmi tv connection, I'm assuming mhl isnt compatible bc I have a new android: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 128gig I think my phone uses chrome cast instead of mhl?
Assuming my Z flip 4 isn't mhl compatible, and I have no visual or touch feedback all I have is a secondary display when the main screen is closed. (However even the second screen is starting to deteriorate, it doesn't function at all anymore only shows time and date now.)
I'm completely out of options, t-mobile has charged me $700 bc I haven't returned it yet but they give me no options to backup data 🤦🏾♂️

If you’re asking if you can mirror your phone to your Mac via HDMI, then the answer is no. The HDMI port on your Mac is an HDMI out, meaning you can output your Mac’s display to en external monitor, but you Mac cannot receive a signal from your phone.

I also have the Note 10 in the plus version. She states at the beginning that it must be OTG compatible. Our phones are not compatible with OTG.

From your part 2 video .. I wanted to see if vysor would work for me .. since I dont have access to monitor or a TV screen .. but it does not ... I have galaxy m51 , its not completely broken .. it turns on .. I can only see grey screen and the touch is not working ... so I cant unlock ...after installing vysor , I plugged it in with my surface pro laptop by USB cable .... but in vysor the phone is not getting detected ... ( new phone gets detected) ... I assume its because it does not have any usb debugging allowed ?

Is USB Debugging required for this process to function? Unfortunately, I've encountered a situation where my OnePlus 7 Pro's screen is broken and completely black. I've been actively seeking solutions to mirror/cast my phone's display onto my laptop or TV. Many of the available methods, however, require USB debugging, which is disabled by default on my device. Regrettably, I'm unable to enable it due to the screen's blacked-out condition.

Yes, using Smart Switch is a viable option once you've connected your old phone to the TV. 🙂
I have a Huawei P30 Pro, and although it is compatible, it doesn't recognize the mouse. I can't enter the password, so it seems that it also doesn't recognize the computer.

I tried this method. the phone was locked with a pattern and the pattern didn't show on the screen. i tried moving the mouse and pressing buttons. also tried connecting a keyboard as well. the mouse is only moving on the actual 90% broken screen and I can see it move in areas that are not broken on the actual screen but no activity on the monitor except for a lock icon. what should I do?

Hey i had a similar problem. I used a keyboard and mouse. Click the space bar on the keyboard to unlock the screen and type in your pin using the keyboard

If your phone has a pin/letter password, this is a possible solution:
When you see the lock symbol on the TV, plug in an external keyboard, click ‘enter’ to act as the swipe, type your password, then click ‘enter’ again. Your phone should unlock.

No, this can't be done using a laptop. Laptops don't have the ability to receive a signal via HDMI, they can only output their own display. If you don't have access to a TV, a desktop computer monitor would work.

If your phone is OTG compatible; yes, the mouse will work.

Daniel, this is what it is doing for me right now. I can't see my whole phone screen when I plug it into the TV, only a clock and a lock like you saw. I also can't draw my pattern this way but could if it was showed the whole screen!

If your phone requires OTG to be turned on manually, unfortunately this method won't work for you. I don't currently have a solution for that particular problem. 😕

What if the smartfon doesnt have OTG? And we can not use USB mouse?
Unless your phone screen responds to touch, you need an alternate way to control your phone. If you are unable to use a USB mouse to control your phone, unfortunately I don’t have a solution.

If your phone is OTG & MHL compatible, then yes; you can use this method to access your Gmail account from your old phone.

yes but only type C 3.1 not 2.0. check your phone usb specification on gsmarena

It works for any phone that is both OTG & MHL compatible. I can't speak for every single phone model from every single company. You can search on Google whether or not your phone has these 2 capabilities. 🙂

Unfortunately, no. The HDMI port on a laptop is an output, not an input, meaning it is only able to output its own display to another monitor; it cannot receive the display of another device.
You can connect your phone to a TV or a desktop computer monitor though.

The reason I say to use a wired mouse is so that you don’t have to interact with the physical phone. If you try to use a bluetooth mouse, how are you going to pair it to your phone if you can’t see or touch the screen? By hardwiring everything, that problem is eliminated.

Yes, you can have multiple devices plugged into the USB hub at once.

Honestly, I can’t say for sure because I’ve never tried it. If you already have the equipment you’ve mentioned, try it out and see if it works.

Can I just screen mirror if I have a smart tv
If you are able to use your phone well enough in its current state to turn on screen mirroring, then yes; you can mirror your phone to your smart TV. But if you aren’t currently able to operate your phone, then using a cable connection is probably your best option.

How do you unlock a phone that is password protected? Shows you just swiped to get it unlocked.
You swipe with the mouse, then use the mouse to type in your password.
It is not working for my Samsung galaxy a30s. Any recommendations, please?
From what I have read online, the Samsung Galaxy A30s is not MHL compatible, meaning it isn’t capable of outputting its display via HDMI.
As I said in the beginning of the video, your phone has to be both OTG *and* MHL compatible for this to work. So unfortunately this method won’t work for you.
