Great!! Thanks Ric!! I have made the same observation concerning training frequency... also did the light medium and heavy full body cycles plus the 3 day split routines... nice to have a second opinion from a pro that backs it up!! Greetings from Germany

Raymaster7482 not true depends how much weight you using. For example right now u can do 225 for 5. That’s about 85%. Now u go in gym pop some anadrol now you doing with same amount of muscle 225x9. Guess what you working at higher intensity that your tendons aren’t used to. You need more time off or you will tear something because now you repping 5x your old 1 mr. Now if you natty your aren’t gona progress in strength that fast that you would tear something. Also working in the 80-100% of one mr every single day would burn your cns out. While if you did 60-75% you would be ok.
Have to admit I'm a daily user arms then shoulders then chest then legs then cardio then palates I'm 61 and feel fine I have to agree it's what's fits your body I'm no body builder so use lighter weights never wanted to be one but being fit is never a bad thing and IMHO Ric talks a lot of sense. Cheers mate
I'm 53 and have found pretty much what you're doing works for me too. I think it's important to do something daily so I mix in lifting cardio and sports (I've got pickup soccer I can still play). I'm a little worried about diet, since I don't put on weight and with kids junk food is all around. I eat healthy but not near as healthy as I used to.
That's not a good mindset to have, if you feel bad for t as king a day off then you're develooing an unhealthy relationship with training. A day off is good for your progress, don't becone addicted to a behaviour and let it effect your life negatively because then you'll never be satisfied.
Ric (The Professor) knows his stuff. I'm 47 and been training since 15, and @ 6'3.5 with a Mesomorph/ Endomorph body type I knew I needed volume to keep body fat in check, diet clean and cardio. I feel good at 3 days on 1 day off with medium to light weights. I'll change it up to a 4 day split with heavy days and 2 days off. Weak areas need more attention and strong areas need more sets/reps ect. Ric is right...Find out what works for you. -Arnold believed in volume, lots sets and reps. Mike Mentzer believed in "heavy duty" low sets and slow reps. Find out what works for you.
About 10 years ago I switched to Clarence Bass' one day a week training program. I've never gotten such good results and had so much fun working out and being in the gym as I have with Bass' program. It's very hard.....and very short, but you'll see muscle grow on you like never before....
Thank you for making these videos. I'm 43 and been trying to get my body in shape and have always been an exto morph tall skinny guy. They are very helpful and interesting to learn about the history.
I totally agree with Ric. If you want to build size you should target each muscle twice a week. I believe your first session you should give a hundred percent, second session about eighty percent of your max weight, while increasing the volume of repetitions.
I get to do 2-a-days once and a while, and I love it. Your right, find the workout that works for YOU. The recovery is what dictates how often to workout.
Definitely something that will be clearer as you continue to train, I've trained anywhere from three to six days a week and they all worked at the time, now that I'm 67 I've found that four days is ideal. Be in tune with your body and eat lean protein with sufficient carbs.
I do 1 body part per workout a week, taking 2 or 3 days off a week, but HELL, I do a LOT of sets. And why do I do this ???? cause its a warm up, a good mind/muscle connection and I LOVE THIS SHIT. I do it this way... set 1 : light weight for a slow and steady 20 reps, 1 min rest set 2 : a little heavier for a slow and concentrated 20 reps, 1 min rest, set 3 : working sets, max rep, sets from 10 to 15 reps 45 secondes set 4 : working sets, max rep, sets from 10 to 15 reps 1 minutes rest; set 5 : working sets, max rep, sets from 10 to 15 reps 1 minutes rest; set 6 : heavier height, max reps, 4 to 6 reps followed by 10 second rest, set 7 : same weight, max reps, 1 to 4 reps, 1 minutes rest set 8-9-10 : as heavy as i can go, max reps, from 2 to 4 reps, 1 minutes between sets and sometimes I will add this then back at starting weight for max reps for sets 11-12-13.1 minutes between sets 3-4 exercises, per training session. some say its to much but hey ... haters gotta hate.
It was not planned . . but I ended up taken 7 days off after a ski trip . . after which my grip strength was phenomenal . . I blew through my plateaus and I was very happy. But Once a week is tough to wrap my mind around. Will have to give it a try, age sucks.
Great video Ric, I just reworked my program to a 3 day split, hitting everything twice a week. Keep up the good work, producing such informational videos.
I'm training legs twice a week. Training scheme is Monday upper body, Tuesday legs Wednesday upper body part, Thursday legs and Friday upper body part. All compound exercises are 5x9-8-2(pyramid weight up) and isolated exercises is 4x10-12 reps. My diet is not superior , but training program for me works amazing.
Ric you have a lot of mileage on your joints due to your very physical life that you have lived, however from what I can tell from listening to your videos, your heart is in good health at the age of 70 years old AND that is what matters. The other stuff you can work around and live with. Most people would hope to still be in as good health as you are at age 70 and to have been able to have done all the things that you have done. Keep it up Ric. Admire your passion and spirit.
I do mon:chest n tris tue: back n bis wed: shoulders n traps thurs: legs fri: lower back and core sat-sun total rest and stretching rinse repeat and roughly 10 mins everyday stairmaster for cardio
I'm only going to train once a week for now, just getting back into lifting after about a 4 year hiatus, I'm only 23, but I work a physically demanding job, so two heavy days a week will definitely overtrain me, when I get some strength and muscle back that i lost I will do two days a week, but just starting back up I will see gains either way. Monday chest, Tuesday back, Wednesday legs and shoulders, Thursday arms. I start out with 20 mins of some form of cardio, then lift heavy for 4 sets of 8 to 12 on 3 different lifts every day. If you go heavy enough and you work a physically demanding job, thats going to be very close to overtraining, I like to keep my body close to being overtrained that way I know I'm challenging myself
Love Rics advice. These guys kept it simple and had some of the best aesthetic physiques and didnt over complicate things like today fitness industry. Train, Eat right and rest.
We all overtrain. It's who we are. I love the full body workout. It's a great feeling, and you have a whole day of rest coming. Enjoy exercising, but it's nice to not have to do it everyday. There's a reason they call it a "work"out.
Love the station ..im 51yrs old but started lifting at the age of 10 ..i have bad shoulders , knees , etc etc ...resently i started to the old 3day a week and love it ... my days of going heavy are gone !! The last show i competed in was in 1988 and i look better know on low carbs and can maintain a better size and grainy look than in 88 ...love your guests and honest answers ...keep up the great work
The algorithms just brought this up in my feed, I know it’s 2 years old but u Ric seem like a gentleman, you should look in to stem cell treatment if anywhere that’s sore it’s a bit pricey but well worth it!! 👍
always enjoy the show. it would be great to see Dave Haft again to get more specific information on natural training because i've been using what i could get out of that one interview and what Rich has said as well and it's been working! anyways, great show, thanks!
I do 3 Days on 1 Day off 2 Days on 1 day off and repeat. I GET MAD GAINZ. I Target my weekest bodyparts twice a week which is back, shoulders and legs. So my schedule is: Sunday: back/core Monday: chest/shoulders Tuesday: legs Wednesday: rest Thursday: back/shoulders Friday: arms/quads/hamstrings Saturday: rest. This is my favorite split. Sick gains.
even tho I powerlift, this still applies, when it comes to recovery, eat, sleep, rest, take some days off, and just train smart, period.....thank you @Ricscorner
I am North of fiddy and go 3 days a week. I alternate chest/tri/shoulders. Back/ Bi/ legs. If evens itself out. Anymore my joints hurt any less they hurt also with no pump.
I love your show Ric and like you said what works for you might not be best for someone else. But I'm 40 & in better shape than I was when I was in my 20s. I almost ALWAYS have trained each body part once a week. I believe I get the best results from this & most advanced weight lifters gym rats do the same . I think twice a week is great when yiu are first getting back from an injury bc you will go lighter & more reps less sets so the body will recover faster. But let's say I hit legs on Sunday , chest on Monday , back on Tuesday off wed shoulders thur & biceps & triceps Friday . I do like to take 2 days off completely and sometimes it's two in a row or two just whenever . I have no set order I go by feel. Hell sometimes I feel like like just going in doing 5-6 heavy sets of deadlifts & 5 sets of pull ups and that is it other times I throw a row in there. Some chest days I will do 4 lifts 17-18 sets sometimes 3 lifts 12 sets but I will get sore as heck a day later and it may last a couple days. So I feel fully rested & fresh with taking days off before I hit it again bc you work the shoulder & triceps even biceps & larger muscles when you are doing other body parts. BUT I did try the two times a week but I get more sore (good sore) & better pump & better results with hitting each part once a week. Average 4 lifts 16 sets & about 8 - 10 reps per set. I'm no genetic freak at all just 195lbs 6 ft tall 13% bF 40 year old with athletic build never touched a steroid . I do take a lot of supplements for joints & overall health and have been for 15 years.
I used to workout my arms literally everyday almost when I was 13-17 but now I workout like every other day during mon- fri, sometimes sat or sun. I feel though like let's say if you trained a robot and it was working bicep curls 24/ 7 and feeding it at the same time or something it would grow bigger and bigger fast. I dont remember how many sets I used to do, but now I do 4 sets no matter what every for every workout I do. 14 reps- biceps curls, 14- hammer, 4 sets 70 shrugs (with four curls right after each last shrug), 4 sets of 50 dumbell chest press.
We listen to everything else but not our bodys. You go to the gym with worries, thoughts and all sorts of bagage up there. Some people have mastered the skill to just be 1 with the gym and focus on what they are doing in there and really feel what they are training. This should be obvious outside the gym also, but its not. Had this problem with mind & muscle connection before, but now i erease everything and have pure focus. I close my eyes everytime i lift the weights just to feel that mind & muscle connetion and it works. So....try when you have time of to sit in silence and really feel what your body is saying, listen to it. Let it talk :)
Ric are squats bad for the knees? I'm 40 years old and just started doing squats and deadlifts which I have pleasantly found out that I really enjoy doing them. I don't currently have any joint or knee pain or problems but I worry after hearing about your and other older athletes knee and joint problems. I don't want to stop doing squats and deadlifts but I don't want to develop knee or joint problems ten twenty years from now.
Hi. I've been going recently to the gym. I go almost everyday. Put it 4 to 6 times a week. I don't feel sore, I hit all the muscles, always pumped to go. I know from what the video says is that I'm clearly over training so now comes the question... Do I bring it down to 3 to 4 days? Or continue with my usual routine? Again, I don't feel sore. I train my ass out and I've seen growth in the last month and a half
I'm tired of hearing that there's only one way to train. This is my 20th year of consistent training. There is nothing wrong with hitting one body part a week if you're going up to those 20 or even 24 sets. If you're going to train the muscle more than once a week you would not want to do that many sets and maybe only 10 at the very max per day. There are so many different ways to achieve the same exact look… Genetics will determine everything. Example look at Dorian Yates and the way he train versus Ronnie Coleman and the way he trained. They train completely different but they were both raining Mr. Olympia… Proof is in the pudding. I do agree with Rick about you have to find out what works best for you. People need to stop asking these questions that can't be answered and need to put in the years to figure out what works for them.
derrik tie well training my biceps everyday for 30 days naturally worked for me. It was when I was resting for 2 weeks then came back to workout again they grew fast.
EV3 Dale you are so incorrect. Everyone always talks about aggression and emotional instability but honestly I feel quite great on the juice. I am happy and very little upsets me. I stay in a much better mood than when off cycle so please quit spreading garbage you just hear without actual first hand knowledge.
The funny part is....that practically any drug prescribed by a doctor has very dangerous possible side effects. That doesn't mean they affect all people. I work with guys that have taken these drugs well over 20 years, I work with a doctor that has monitored these drugs well over 30 years. I could kill you with tylenol man. I get my blood checked often and I have all my levels monitored. Practically everything has side effects all the way up to death. Tell me how many actual documented steroid deaths there are? And not from "steroid abuse", but from just general monitored practical steroid use. You see the problem is all these people that don't use them over-inflate the sides. Are there side effects? Sure. But what you guys do is act like all people are affected by all side effects. That's stupid thinking man. You guys still haven't come to grasps with why steroids have such a bad reputation anyways. I am assuming you know the history in regards to the Olympics and Russia and why they came about to begin with? So all I am saying is if you are going to reference side effects and try to tell people how bad they are, don't act like they are guaranteed to suffer ALL sides or that they will be some aggressive arrogant jerk. That's just not the reality. You don't live it, you just hear it and regurgitate what you hear. Just like I was always told "weed is a gateway drug and if you use it you WILL go on to harder stuff." Funny that hasn't applied to me for the last 15 years of recreational use. So yea man. I get you are trying to help and you mean no harm, but you must understand you ARE incorrect.
Full body workout once a week can work well if max intensity, so that you don't even want to workout again for 5-8 days. Can grow and recover well that way. But that is a very serious way to go as that one whole day a week is totally dedicated to the workout and it requires rigorous devotion and sacrificing most everything else.

i agree, full body 3 days a week for naturals. training a muscle only once a week is not optimal no matter how much volume you do
some people conflate overtraining with CNS burnout there's a difference between not allowing optimal recovery and overtraining to the point where you actually go backwards. Great!! Thanks Ric!! I have made the same observation concerning training frequency... also did the light medium and heavy full body cycles plus the 3 day split routines... nice to have a second opinion from a pro that backs it up!!
Greetings from Germany
yo ric. i don't know if you gonna read this but i must say your videos are so amaizing i can even decribe it. you are such a gentelman. love the guests pove the talks love subjects you are descosting. sorry for gramma am from poland ;) man you are legend and those videos are a big inspiration :) and big free knowledge. YOU ARE THE MAN!
If you use steroids you don't need so much rest as a natty. Keep that in mind when you watch these kind of videos.
Raymaster7482 However natties also tend to need higher frequency at least in strength athletics.
+Gottfried Osterbach well it's just necessary to give your body more rest if u r a natty.
While if you did 60-75% you would be ok.
exactly right,,ric was jucier
Atrix xira 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Have to admit I'm a daily user arms then shoulders then chest then legs then cardio then palates I'm 61 and feel fine
I have to agree it's what's fits your body I'm no body builder so use lighter weights never wanted to be one but being fit is never a bad thing and IMHO Ric talks a lot of sense.
I remember “heavy” and “light” training days. I’m old lol
Just started back training. And, yes, I do have that "If I take a day off, then I lost muscle" feeling. ESPECIALLY, now, during this pandemic.
That's not a good mindset to have, if you feel bad for t as king a day off then you're develooing an unhealthy relationship with training. A day off is good for your progress, don't becone addicted to a behaviour and let it effect your life negatively because then you'll never be satisfied.
Ben Potter well said mate cheers
I think all your subscribers are just waiting for the day you bring Arnold in:D
You’re Awsome Ric , I’m new here to your channel & I appreciate you and your lifelong knowledge of bodybuilding.
Miss you , Rick!!!! Love your old vids
I totally agree with Ric. If you want to build size you should target each muscle twice a week. I believe your first session you should give a hundred percent, second session about eighty percent of your max weight, while increasing the volume of repetitions.
I miss this man alot his tips helped me alot when i was young
I love this guy because ha just talks about the subject not about anything else!
If there was one person I wish I had the chance to sit down and have a chat with it would have been Ric Drasin. RIP sir
I miss you Ric...
I get to do 2-a-days once and a while, and I love it. Your right, find the workout that works for YOU. The recovery is what dictates how often to workout.
Didn't Arnold do that?
@@garysnow1475 Probably ;) he seemed to know what he was talking about. lol
I do it this way...
set 1 : light weight for a slow and steady 20 reps, 1 min rest
set 2 : a little heavier for a slow and concentrated 20 reps, 1 min rest,
set 3 : working sets, max rep, sets from 10 to 15 reps 45 secondes
set 4 : working sets, max rep, sets from 10 to 15 reps 1 minutes rest;
set 5 : working sets, max rep, sets from 10 to 15 reps 1 minutes rest;
set 6 : heavier height, max reps, 4 to 6 reps followed by 10 second rest,
set 7 : same weight, max reps, 1 to 4 reps, 1 minutes rest
set 8-9-10 : as heavy as i can go, max reps, from 2 to 4 reps, 1 minutes between sets
and sometimes I will add this
then back at starting weight for max reps for sets 11-12-13.1 minutes between sets
3-4 exercises, per training session.
some say its to much but hey ... haters gotta hate.
Thanks Ric, great info! I am going to switch things up now. keep up the great work, I really enjoy your channel.
It was not planned . . but I ended up taken 7 days off after a ski trip . . after which my grip strength was phenomenal . . I blew through my plateaus and I was very happy. But Once a week is tough to wrap my mind around. Will have to give it a try, age sucks.
Thank u Ric. Ur videos are so helpful. Ur brain is full of knoledge/experience. Glad u share that with us.
Ray, Brooklyn NY
Great video Ric, I just reworked my program to a 3 day split, hitting everything twice a week. Keep up the good work, producing such informational videos.
Thanks from Spain, Ric. There's always useful info in your channel.
I'm addicted to your vids Ric!
Another good one! Please keep 'em coming
Man I miss Ric. What a great guy he was.
Ric didn't talk down to anybody in fact he was very protective of his audience! He joked around a lot but he was really a no bulshit guy.
Good info from one of the old school bodybuilders, and the best era, thanks ric.
this guy breaks it down with no nonsense gotta respect his knowledge
Thanks for the work you put in to bringing us this info and all the great guests
Great video Ric! I'll keep watching and spread the word.
The last show i competed in was in 1988 and i look better know on low carbs and can maintain a better size and grainy look than in 88 ...love your guests and honest answers ...keep up the great work
It makes sense and I too notice how the rest helps, my problem is keeping the motivation up. Good video Ric.
The algorithms just brought this up in my feed, I know it’s 2 years old but u Ric seem like a gentleman, you should look in to stem cell treatment if anywhere that’s sore it’s a bit pricey but well worth it!! 👍
It’s better to be over trained than undertrained.
under-trained person won't get injured easily. over-trained will fuck up health
Wrong.

Over training.
MrTrenttness haha 😂
always enjoy the show. it would be great to see Dave Haft again to get more specific information on natural training because i've been using what i could get out of that one interview and what Rich has said as well and it's been working! anyways, great show, thanks!
Thanks for sharing your insights Ric. Iñve seen this before and get something out of it every time I see it!
I do 3 Days on 1 Day off 2 Days on 1 day off and repeat. I GET MAD GAINZ. I Target my weekest bodyparts twice a week which is back, shoulders and legs. So my schedule is:
Sunday: back/core
Monday: chest/shoulders
Tuesday: legs
Wednesday: rest
Thursday: back/shoulders
Friday: arms/quads/hamstrings
Saturday: rest.
This is my favorite split. Sick gains.
your John Heart Natural Mr. America interview was great regarding overtraining.
even tho I powerlift, this still applies, when it comes to recovery, eat, sleep, rest, take some days off, and just train smart, period.....thank you @Ricscorner
I am North of fiddy and go 3 days a week. I alternate chest/tri/shoulders. Back/ Bi/ legs. If evens itself out. Anymore my joints hurt any less they hurt also with no pump.
This dude is one tough cookie mate. Right on Ric.
That's how I started when I was 15... Mon, Wed and Friday before and after school. I may go back to that when I am old.
Love the music. Gary Neumanesque!
Thanks for the tips, Ric! Always highly appreciated, brother.
Much respect. Learned a lot: There's an appropriate pace for each age.
Train 4 times a week 3 weeks, one week deload. Works for me 👍
Awesome job of explaining about over training!
Thanks. Your tips are always great!
Bro train harder and less train 4times a week but fucking intense
They take drugs, fuck off.
I workout 6-7 times a week, usually a single muscle 1-2 times a week with like 6-8 exercises of 3-5 sets. And I feel ripped! And I like it.
Zsombor Nagy It's not sustainable.
Huge Monges yes it is I did this same for years

Ric you are so cool! Learning a lot really appreciate it man!
If you are using multiple steroids yes you can train like a beast everyday!
derrik tie well training my biceps everyday for 30 days naturally worked for me.
Jess W that’s why you never cycle off lol
@@paradoxprince roids aren't a necessary nutrient of life, the consequences come and come hard and fast, good luck!
Full body workout once a week can work well if max intensity, so that you don't even want to workout again for 5-8 days. Can grow and recover well that way. But that is a very serious way to go as that one whole day a week is totally dedicated to the workout and it requires rigorous devotion and sacrificing most everything else.
