Apologies for the aspect of the GoPro... it's a bit pointed downwards. Also my 2nd day sailing Hookipa was much better as I changed to a 92L board and the wind was less gusty. However I wanted to present the reality of my 1st sail and hopefully you won't make the same mistake I made if you ever sail there!
Nice thruster board. How do you like it?
Exhausting session in my book ! I hear you when you say you can’t sail on that tack …..I can’t do anything on port tack myself ! Great reality check in the float and ride gusty conditions, kudos for doing well on that too small board. Thanks for sharing, great video.
Conditions not that dissimilar to riding Newport Northern Beaches Sydney - wind gusty, light wind around the rocks. However we don't have crowds or waves like Hookipa. Looks super fun.
Paul, you absolute fucking legend.
Too small a board, probably could have done with a 5.0 or 5.2 and horrifically gusty. I was well impressed how you kept going. You must been been totally fucked 🤩
Another awesome video. The real experience at Ho’Okipa 🤙
Cheers.
Paul Dunn 👌👊💪🤙💥
Great stuff Paul!
Way to document the Real n share it!
*****
🤘🤘🤘
Great video - all of the frustrations of the sport we love in perfect POV!
Beyond truth
Thanks for another great video .... felt like I was there. Appreciate your sense of humor, but you don't need any excuses for your sailing man, you did great. So glad you had some fun and shared it with your fans!
Thanks for taking us along. Also I don't think I've seen a video that captures this side of windsurfing before. Sometimes I have these sort of sessions on flatwater. The relief to get back to the beach. And then the satisfaction when you come back and do better the next session.
I stayed in Maui for three months when i was twenty and travelling (27 years ago 👀) and one of my fondest memories is catching a wave at Hookipa and Josh Stone hollering and cheering me on from behind. Lovely guy.
soo much genuine content! I love that you felt as soon as you got on the board, as many of us do, and left it in the final cut, sso much to relate with
"You're gonna need a bigger board"
Glad to see that you made a safe come back to the beach without hitting the rocks.
Congratulations for these fascinating POV footage. I felt i was on the water too!
Holy sh*t, so frustrating! So glad you didn't edit things out though and gave us a glimpse of the real 1st time Ho'okipa experience! Might save some people from going through the same when they visit. And to be fair, it could have gone way worse right? Love how you documented the whole trip, every video is a gem. Thanks and keep it up!
Thanks mate…. Yeah the 2nd day was way easier however what you saw was the real experience ha!
PVB!! Mate, that was so good!! For many of us, this is gold, to see just what the reality is sailing there, that beach break, light on the inside, a huge rip current.... Lucky for us here in NZ Taranaki has both Starboard and Port tack down the line, so we get a taste of both, most of the time its Port tack, but my natural is Starboard, however I dont get to do it that much, so I'm just average at everything!! But Mate you DID get a few waves and you DID get a few nice turns and a fairly decent white water hit!!
and BEST of all you sailed into the beach, that is an achievement!! We have a similar thing at Pungarehu, a tiny channel surrounded by huge rocks, its like sailing through a graveyard!!
92L must have been a dream in the next session, nothing worse than being on a too smaller board!!
Yeah Kev thanks mate you hit the nail on the head! The next day when I used the 92 it was way easier and the wind was way less gusty! I had a great day.
@@windsurfer Looking forward to seeing a bit of that!! Nice one PVB!!
Yep
I enjoy watching the struggle. I can relate. Doesn't look easy by any standards.
Amen
Thanks for this genuine experience!
The struggle is real 😊 Thanks for the video, Paul!
Once again, great video from PVB. It reminds me my first time in Hookipa. It's my fav tack, but I was scaried and excited at the same time. Been there two times and can't wait to go back 🙂
Need to wait for Kona Wind or come to Oahu to sail starboard tack, which I think you’ve done. But November is not Good waves on Oahu. Wind fluky on Maui in November, as you discovered. Needed a bigger rig. WALK OF SHAME. Congratulations.
Wow really enjoyed this!! You really cheered me up! Not an easy session. I could feel with you - exactly how this outing would have been in 1st person. Nice couple of waves caught too! Admire the raw footage and honest comments! You’re the man Paul! 👍🫡🤘😎
Much appreciation for this clip, a true windsurfing experience. Lack of wind, being on a small board for the conditions made it so hard. Hats off for sticking to it, and making it back to shore. I am a friend of Ross Faurot and he warned me and suggested I pick up a bigger board back when i was visiting over a decade ago.
Year around I reside in Minnesota except spend a good chunk in July in Hood River. I mostly wing foil now but still would like to windsurf in Hood River in the right conditions - only been to Maui x2 and windsurfed in Kanaha. Never Ho'okipa. Well done, Paul. That is in the books now.
Keep the awesome videos coming. Perhaps catch you in Hood River in July- 2025 - sail at the Hatchery / the Wall. Love your work and vibes. Best from Minnesota and safe travels - Baskin
Thanks Baskin! It’s definitely a different game out there in Ho’okipa!
This is fantastic and so relatable! Apparently we all make the same noises when struggling with the waterstart 😂
Hookipa has such a psychological stigma to it. Every time I go back my first Hookipa session is like learning to windsurf all over again.
I felt that!
and being hookipa any windssurfer ddream (even if on the wrong side) I did feel your joy on such a long awaited session, I'll be there too one day, but was allready there today
Brilliant, thanks so much for not over editing 🎉 terrific footage, makes for a great “light wind water start tutorial” 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Hey Paul, Another great vid. You've shown us some amazing sailing lately... and some sailing we can all relate to! Hahahaha
Oh man, I've had so many days like that in Wellington! One great session makes it all worthwhile though.
Great video, true life, love it. Thanks mate!👍
YEAH BABY, PAUL GOPRO FOOTAGE FTW!
So relatable, we've all had these sessions where the conditions are just not cooperating. Had it been me the audio track would have been one long bleep for all the cussing and swearing 🤣🤣. Good to hear you had a better session afterwards!
and a huge hissy fit on the beach. Dont forget that.
Very enjoyable footage, many thanks for sharing.
Tack!
Thank you!!!
Well done. Another great video
Thanks for showing us this Paul it’s refreshing to see the struggle - it’s always a little intimidating to sail a new spot ( especially a world famous one like Hookipa ) and the opposite tack for you- I had a tough time there except my struggle was because of being way over powered for the sail I was using - glad you’re having a nice time in Maui cheers !
🙌
Bedankt
Oh wow that’s so helpful thank you!!!!
I'll never understand sailor's obsession with small boards. I sailed down the road on my 110 quad and 5.0, that day and the next.....with no one else out. Perfect days.
Believe me if I lived there I’d have a big board too!
Looked exhausting.😂
Yeah the wind can drop off sometimes in Maui, especially if a rain cloud comes through, or from clouds up and down the cost can shut the wind off. I usually sail a board 10L Liters more than my weight helps a lot. I also rig slightly bigger and once I am constantly over powered then swap out the sail and possibly the board . If your stuck out with no wind just wait 10 min, usually comes back. I Love Maui, have fun!
Thanks mate yeah I learned my lesson!
@@windsurfer Great job making it back to the small beach, not very forgiving.
That underhand grip wave riding is killing me watching it mate.
haha true I felt so kooky on that tack I honestly felt like a beginner again!
Nice Paul, nothing more intimidating than that first Hookipa sail, no matter how small it is. By the way that little grom on the wing is Matt Pritchards son.
Ah cool I didn’t know that!
Best channel on RUclips! Well done Paul, all the best. Mick.
tricky conditions and it's harder with the wrong gear. hope you get more wind🌴💚💚
You did great all things considered with a suboptimal setup and with such positive vibes! I sailed many years ago in July out of Hookipa for a downwinder to Kanaha beach. The Trades are more reliable in summer, but not much waves at that time of the year. I used to go regularly and sailed Kanaha beach and off North Kihei. Great video content and stoked wonderful memories for me. 🙂
good spirit my brother, your videos are pure joy 🤙🏻
Good on you Paul, did pretty good on such a smallish board haha every windsurfer knows the pain
That is so true.
...felt the pain! respect paul!
Kudos to you,
I did not dare going there in 2014. Stayed at Kanaha with 2.8m waves and 25 knots. Much Much easier.
We were all there on the water with you, mate :D
Warts n all video... fair play for staying out... after years of HookeePorrr video's Geraldton looks way better.. great vid Paul 🤙
Ho’okipa is awesome but the wind is definitely more gusty than Gero!
Thought you done really well for your first time! 🤙🏻👏🏻
hahaha I sailed there too.... Went in always as early it was aloud to catch some waves with less people. Back then I was 65kg and planing quick. Loves Hookipa!! Tip try next time Mamma's fish house spot. Its nice too....
I’m F’in exhausted just watching this 😂 Gusty conditions on too small a board sucks. Still very entertaining to watch.
It was tricky!!
Great showing how tough it can be.
Very relatable sesh..
Awesome!! You just sound like a Portuguese swearing all the time 🤣🤣🤣
Great video 💥💥💥💥💥
Great footage! I hope you enjoyed your first session there! Pretty crowded though
😂...looks like you really enjoy swiming.
Blown away 🤙
More F bombs on that vid than all your vids put together! 😆Congrats on getting back to the beach I felt your relief!
Haha sorry about all the F bombs!
@@windsurfer Pretty restrained use of the F-bomb in all honesty. I can be my own worst enemy some days, but think I would have been x times worse ;D
Reading the Transcript is so much fun! 😆 Good effort Mr PvB. Goes to show there is always more to learn on a windsurfer.
Nice to see you having fun 😂 🌈 🐥
🙌
Sick 🤙
Reminds me of "wrong" tack sailing in Geraldton ;)
Haha
i love free diving videos🤣🤣
The stamina it takes to do that ….. omg. Superman.
I should add...you may be the best waterstart windsurfer in the world. 😋😋
yeah Hookipa, go go go 🤙
The Devils Tack!😁
Brilliant Paul, so good to see your first ever sail out at Ho'okipa! How did you find the Goya board? Tempted!?
Was good but way too small to really get into it.
@@windsurfer I have the 92L and can def recommend
God Paul this was good cardio hahah.....i know how it is hehee i swim a lot with my 100+ kg 😅🤣
😄
Hey Takara … Takara … wheeeeehee … TakarAAAa … schhhwshh … ohwow 😅
I think for me boom needs to be higher and harness lines closer together so can work that sail
Was wondering why you kept the part with Baptiste despite him asking you not to show it ?
Ah yeah I had a look again I missed that. I was editing to 1am and sometimes was really tired!
You'll get at least $5 from Jason's Dad for all those waterstarts Paul !!
ha!
Congrats on your first sail at Hookipa, Paul. Nice swimming. Think about turning down to winging a bit! Sounded alzheimer-ish regarding wrong tack. Get those excuses in early...!
Haha
I have the 92L and I weigh less than you, it would have made so much difference on that first session
Spotted: Baptiste on a Quatro board 👀
Lol, fully exposed at the end of the video 😆
That looked like Sarah Hauser's board.
Wau eso fue duro, mucha paciencia. Ya llegara el dia.
Brilliant! But can’t help thinking that for full professional journalism, a trip on the. Rocks would have given the full picture? 😅.
Glad you didn’t though. Enjoy!
Ha yeah I didn’t want to go there!
