      Not exactly true. Gmod WAS a mod (meaning it only had access to the Source SDK and tooling Valve specifically provided and was not able to be sold as its own product) but then they were given the actual source code to Source and were able to develop and sell their own game, based on the mod, but without being constrained with the mod SDK.

    1. They have realistic humanoid playermodels too
    2. The S&box team is very small, especially compared to the Rust team
    And most of the devs on the S&box team are on "dogfooding duty", making games in the engine to see what needs to be added or fixed, there are only a couple who actually touch the API or Engine.

    I think I fundamentally disagree with the development hell thing, making an entire game engine takes fucking forever and honestly they're making progress faster than other engines do

  • @1AirBlack
    @1AirBlack 27 дней назад +29

    S&Box is more like roblox, than GMod. It is more like an engine, devs work really hard on providing convenient tools for developers to build games/experiences, not "uhm half life 2 but you could grab things and spawn freddy fivebears". And in that term if you read their git log, devs work a lot and progress is immense. You don't monitor roblox progress by API changes, you monitor it by decent experiences that users developed. And it is the same with facepunch and S&Box

      @@px8 You're comparing almost a two decades old game platform and compare it with a game platform that's still in developer preview. Which means it's intended for developers to use, not mainstream audience.
      They need to build the tools first and gather a bunch of developers and modders to make something for the platform and also potentially make it their own standalone game that can be released on Steam.

    • @1AirBlack
      @1AirBlack 24 дня назад +3

      @@px8 but roblox was literally cllunky and barely worked a decade ago. And all this progress is an accomplishment of both roblox employees providing useful API changes/upgrades/bugfixes and regular developers that develop experiences and keep improving their skill with the API and overall game design. Even Garry's Mod started out low as just a map that gave an opportunity just to spawn all the enemies and weapons for you to play around with. And even after introduction of lua API GMod came a long way to become what it is. S&Box isn't released yet, it is in the developer preview now(which was closed invite only a few months ago) so real developers could try out tools and give feedback to facepunch team, so it is unfair to compare roblox and s&box in terms of current quality and progress, I compared them only in terms of an overall concept.

  • @n_core
    @n_core 25 дней назад +10

    There's actually a ton of progress being made because they're retooling most of the stuff in S&box and change it from Entity system (like Source) to Scene system (like other modern game engine).
    Their key goal is actually to make a usable and easily modified game engine. Not everyone is talented to use raw Source 2 tools like Valve, so that's why they were focusing on the developer experience first in the past several months.
    Their main goal is probably converting some of the Unity developers to use their engine. Especially for people who are frustrated with Unity's ridiculous licensing royalty fees.
    They are already stated that Facepunch won't seek any royalty fees from games made with S&box. Also Valve themselves already stated that Source 2 will be free to use for everyone. So it could be a huge selling point for a lot of developers.

    I’ve been following S&Boxs development and it’s already about to release. All they need to work on now is the sandbox gamemode and polish things up and they’re ready. They explain it in the end of the blog posts and on discord. Also the the reason why the games don’t work well/there aren’t that many is who would make spend their time making a entire game that isn’t some super small game on a game engine that is constantly changing in fundamental ways breaking their game. Once the game releases they’ve said they will avoid making game breaking changes as much as possible once they fully release the game.

    I think the main appeal of gmod is the fact it’s in source and is a mod of half life. It was how I was introduced to half life and I was super intrigued by the characters and designs and how they would fight each other. Sandbox or whatever has none of the appeal and the sausage playermodels are a major no for me. Yes there’s humans now but idk I feel like it’s going for Roblox 2.0 needs to be accessible like gmod was. You can hop in with no mods and just mess around for hours in gmod.

      to be honest source 2 is a really good engine. i thing garrys idea is how people made alot of successful games by modding the original source engine. like gmod, left 4 dead, counter strike etc. but this time supporting it with all the tools and engine.

  • @Zaseb
    @Zaseb 18 дней назад +1

    i think when facepunch was given the source code of half life alyx they had to start all over again with what they were intending as a spiritual successor. with adding big things like the scene system they basically turned the source 2 engine into their OWN engine. the games being broken on the platform is to be an expected thing because the engine is under a constant work while also still being a platform to create games. might be a far fetched example but think of it like how on roblox if you play a game that hasnt been updated since idk 2010-2014 era it most likely will be broken. that is because roblox as a platform and engine are constantly being changed. same goes with s&box. I also doubt that facepunch was given much if any documentation on the source 2 engine so they had to understand how the engine worked ON TOP of working on it.

  • @SamuelHill-qt4zx
    @SamuelHill-qt4zx 11 дней назад

    Most of the work happens behind the scenes (for modders as this is a game reliant on modders) and I think most developers at Facepunch are actually maintaining Rust, but like Gmod, overtime this game will shape itself - Gmod was never an over night success at release, it took years for the game to cement itself... I think this will be the case for S&Box too

    I'd say this video aged poorly, but it was released like 2 weeks after S&box got it's Steam Page and along with it a bunch of new information about it. I wouldn't say it's in development hell at all, there's been info about it since it's reveal if you look for it. Plenty of people have been able to play and test it for a while, it's slow but it is taking shape.

    In my opinion, this is normal... 4 years and already having all that? Yes, I see it as something that happens to many great games. I think you're just being overly pessimistic and impatient about this. But that's just my point of view and if you don't agree, fine, that's fine. Also, I just want to say that Gmod started in a similar way and took several years to establish itself as such, not to mention that Garry already stated that things with Source 2 are different and much more difficult than with Source... So yeah, it's not nothing strange or bad.
