How to Lock a Diff for RC Drifting

  • Here's a quick video on how I locked the rear diff in my HPI Sprint 2. There's many methods to lock a rear diff in a non-high torque vehicle, and with my method, it's pretty easy! Most efficient drift RC's need to have a locked rear diff to allow both rear wheels to spin continuously.

    I've used HPI CA Glue to lock a gear diff, and so far it's held up with my 10.5T brushless motor. just a few drips into the gears, and they lock up nicely. Also, that glue gun is FABULOUS.

    I drilled two small holes in the diff then injected a two part epoxy (type that mixes in the needle) until it was full. I let it set and it's good to go. The body clip trick is good in a pinch to.

      Yep! Maybe not ideal for offroad, but drifting, it works

    An old toothbrush and liquid dish soap (hand wash) works extremely well for degreasing RC car parts. Better than new!

    How about in a super hot day do you think that glue start melting lol and if your car has big tires and its 1/10 scale with 4wd? A i do have plenty if +35mph speeds? Will this glue be able to handle this conditions ?

      This method I would only recommend for 1/10th scale drift. Heat will build up in diffs especially at speed and torque.

    I use nitro fuel line, put in the diff it locks it well. Cut some pieces and shove it in there.

    i did the same thing but i left the spider gears in and i spun the diff 1 or 2 times to work the glue in and it works good makes the car respond beter

    Bit harder to do with that style diff but i left the spider gears inside mine and used silicone/rtv to fill the diff up. That way when it breaks down like its starting to now the wheel is still driven and its acting like an lsd rather than an open diff. Epoxy would have been better but its what i had in the shop

    You had to look pretty hard to find a pink glue gun. The only ones ive ever seen are blue.

    U can also use the hpi wheely king lock spools they a no mod drop in

      Yep, I saw that mod, but my local shop couldn't get a hold of one with HPI's current "in-stock" position being horrible.....

    I am looking at building a street eliminator drag car. And I will be locking the rear diff. Is the hot glue a good method or am I better off using a really thick diff oil? I will be using a b6.1 for the build.

    How do you remove the diff from the car cause i have the same car but cant seem to figure how to remove it

      Just a few screws to remove the bulkhead from the chassis plate and you're in

    I just rebuilt a 4x4 and noticed it was missing a hex grub screw in the rear going to the rear differential and had an extra grub screw and put it in and when I assembled all the new suspension I noticed my truck won't move freely or at all? possibly the diff is locked? I am now wondering if it was done purposely or if the rear diff is shot. Amy thoughts? pissed me off big time after buying this second hand and letting my kids to run it and I bought it for parts but they talked me into keeping it and hopping it up and not using it for parts. I guess I have to take it all back apart and check out the insides of the diff like I should have to begin a it since I had it all apart...never took one apart and was afraid sine I am a rookie still.

      As you dis assemble, take photos of the before. You can also reference online manuals depending on what vehicle it is. It's pretty easy once you get in side. Something could have dis-lodged inside the diff case causing it to lock. Happy wrenching!

    How would you go about reversing the diff after hot gluing it? Thinking of doing this, but I want to be able to reverse this just in case.

      +GruntMan554 Just simply open the diff, and pluck out the hot glue...it stays somewhat mushy....kind f like a stale gummy bear

    Salut ,merci pour ta vidéo 🙏j'ai un problème et j'espère que tu peux m'aider,mes 4 roues sont bloqués et je ne sais pas d'où cela vient,nous avons le même modèle,mon moteur n'ai pas bloqué,mes roue avant sont directionnel mais ne tourne pas et quand j'accélère rien ne ce passe,help me plaise bro 🙏

      Well, I would first start by removing the motor or at least the pinion gear. This should allow the entire drivetrain to spin freely. Since this is a belt drive you can also disengage the belts to isolate the different axles. There must be a bind somewhere, either a faulty bearing, bent driveshaft or similar. you're going to have to reverse engineer the drivetrain to isolate the issue

    I have a rock racer, the vaterra twin hammers I want to lock it because I think that it could help crawling, but I´m afraid of putting stress on something, do u know if there is any problem doing this?

      Sure, locking it will put stress down the driveline....most likely the driveshafts. Vaterra does make lockers for their diffs, which I would recommend....there's a lot more stress in off road vs. drift

      Not for an offroad....you'll need an actual steel locker for that

    I have a tamiya tt-02 with front and rear diffs and I wanna lock them for drifting so should I lock both the front and back or just the one on the front or the one in the back?

      Just the rear for drifting. Some say a "one Way" front diff is easy to drift....as it gives an E brake feel

    my hpi sprint 2 has difficulty of drift on the left, is that this change will have more stability in the drift? or only option?

    Do you know the difference between HPI's "Sprint 2" and "Sprint 2 Drift" cars?

      The HPI Sprint 2 vehicles (Sport, Drift and Flux) are great 50/50 platforms for a multitude of uses. The Sport and Drift platforms have brushed based electronics and the only other differences are the tires. Sport comes with grip tires, drift comes with hard plastic tires to help the "drift". The Flux version adds Castle Creation's re-branded HPI Flux brushless electronics and to this date, they only offer grip tires on the flux. All version can drift easily, but they're 50/50 platforms and may not be the "best" drifter on the block, but they're lots of fun. I have a ton of videos of the HPI Sprint 2 including the Porsche that I turned into a Toyota Supra drifter and also the GTR Mustang (very old videos! lol) that I did some speed runs with.

      Great! Thanks for your help! What other models (specifically RWD setups) to you recommend? I feel like underdriving the front and overdriving the rear on a 2+2 setup would be pretty fun, but a true RWD setup would be awesome.

      The Sakura d3 CS is a great car and already set up for countersteer.

      Only the rear you want to lock. The front can remain stock for drifting or even better, pick up the HPI One Way Diff - I have a video here: ruclips.net/video/R9JrXlUtEg4/видео.html

    What if l do this to my 1/18 buggy? Will it decrease the performance?

      Probably. It may drift better, but everything else will be less performance,especially how it corners!

      The Front one way helps in drifting to keep the front wheels spinning in the drift. If you were to hit the brakes on your car, it does nothing to the front axle to avoid a spin out

      This was for a drift car. You'll need more holding power for a 4x4 truck

    Why would I lock a diff. If I could just put in a limited slip or 1 way diff? The only thing reason I see is $$$.

      JRturtle In drift specific RC's, locking the rear diff helps maintain the drift and keep both tires spinning the same RPM. If you have a limited slip, it can cause you to spin out easier. As for a "one way" diff, those are used in the fronts only on drift specific. to act as a "handbrake" feature if you hit the brake to throw the back of the car around something tight
