This was done in my homeland too. I'm from Venezuela, which is pretty much Latin America's version of North Korea in all but name. For years I was saving up money so I could flee the country, only for the government to render that money useless by slicing off five zeroes off of our currency. Effectively making everyone's savings be worth pennies under the new denomination. It ruined nearly 3 years of hard savings but I learned my lesson and so did the rest of the country. Most transactions are done in dollars these days, and when I resumed saving money, I would exchange it, at outrageously inflated rates, to US Dollars to preserve their value.
It was worth it, I eventually managed to break free by the tail end of 2019

That was in the 90s, and it's one of the major events that forced them to become very self-sufficient. Nowadays the only claims of starvation in North Korea you'll see are in clickbaity titles and propaganda pieces - even according to the CIA World fact book they are actually fairing much better than other countries with similar GDP per capita levels...
Edit: Of course there is scarcity of certain goods in North Korea, part of it due to the regime's not-giving-a-fuck-about-the-people "military first" policy and part from international sanctions, but scarcity of specific goods is a much more mild issue than, you know, mass starvation...

I honestly really really hope that one day, a revolution happens in North Korea. The citizen's will, at some point, have a revolution. The sooner, the better, but of course in a realistic view point, it won't be happening anytime soon. I of course could be wrong, there is always that chance. I just hope someday the citizen's form a small group that begins the start of a revolution. It only takes one human soul, to start something that can make history, and grab the world's eyes and hearts, that one soul, grabbing the attention and gaining the trust of others to finally want change. Will spark something the entire world will be watching in hope of good news. The world would hear and see possible killings of the innocent. It takes guts, blood, and tears to make change, a change for the history books to be remembered by the human race.
