As a Greek I have to add a couple of things to what you said about the Mediterranean diet. In Greece we have only two salad dressings: 1)olive oil + lemon juice and 2)olive oil + vinegar and if we want to make your dressing extra fancy then we use balsamic vinegar or once in a while mustard. It is a very rare occasion to see a Greek dress his/her salad with something else. Also, at least once and often twice a week we eat legumes e.g fakes (lentil soup), rebithia (garbanzo bean soup), fasolada (white bean soup), arakas (peas) etc. They are delicious protein packed recipes, that help reduce your weekly meat consumption. In fact, when I want to have some protein for lunch but want to avoid meat, I opt for one of the recipes I just mentioned. Lastly, Greeks rarely use canned goods. The only canned food you can easily find in our supermarkets is tuna, we buy everything else from the grocer or our local farmers markets. Even our legumes are bought dry, which is only much cheaper and much healthier than canned and it makes a huge difference in how the food tastes.

I had to look it up, but I did find a ψοθπλε οφ sites in English that you might like. Here they are: 1. greek.food.com/healthy 2. www.mygreekdish.com/category/collections/traditional-greek-taverna-recipes/ there aren;t that many sites with traditional Greek recipes in English. Just remember that Greeks roast most of their meets and fish either in the oven or on coals. We rarely fry anything and almost never deep fry. But you can look up recipes for specific dishes. It is easier to find those. Wikipedia actually has a good list of traditional Greek dishes for you to get ideas, here's the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_cuisine

An Egyptian here too :) i love this diet cuz it's so much lighter on my tummy, all the ingredients are easily found here in Egypt & do not cost an arm & a leg, the varieties are endless, no need for fat loaded processed junk, carbs are allowed as long as the cooking methods r healthy with some olive oil....this diet works very well in Egypt & yes we are very much like the Greeks :)

I am greek and i think that Mediterranean diet is the best. We have really health pies to. Not to mention that for our sweets (traditionally, and what I do) we don't use sugar but honey and of course nuts.

  • @leebk735
    @leebk735 7 лет назад +39

The problem with the western diet is the amount of sugar, GMO's and pre-packaged foods. We have moved away from all that is natural and opted for fast, convenient and empty nutritionally.

I notice I've started eating more like this after leaving the vegan hclf diet. my body is doing well with fish, eggs, and small amounts of dairy (skyr yogurt). finally losing the 25lbs I gained eating soo many carbs being vegan

My mother is Greek and all the things you say are definitely true!!! My mother and grandmother have taught me to love and enjoy cooking and nourishing myself with foods! This is the real way to nourish yourself, not like a raw food diet which does not provide nutrition... only water and fibers.

I am plant based with the exception of a portion of meat and one of eggs every week.
I am from Italy and thought that being plant based or vegan would be impossible for us Italians, because there are not many fancy vegan fake meats and products made for us.. Nonetheless I noticed that all our simple basic everyday meals ARE all vegan or almost!!!
Pasta with tomato sauce, a simple pizza with veggies, all those amazing risotto dishes, or baked casseroles of veggies or all those things are amazing and tasty and yet so simple and healthy!
Yes, there are many meat filled dishes, but the most "poor" dishes of our tradition are amazing and it's now so easy to avoid eating too much meat or other :)

Well, they still enjoy whatever I bring to work as we all share everything that I cook so I am usually the person they'll go to if they want some healthy salads or generally main courses!

I guess by mediterranean they mean only certain countries as I am Catalan and we do eat heavy dairy and aninal products and so much less fruit ( basically only in pies or melon with pork ham), lots of bread, pastries, cheese, duck confitc pasta with bechamel and meat filling, cured meats, chicken, fish, s little rice but not so much, salad is usually only eaten in the summer... and it is still 'Mediterranean' the French diet is a very close diet to ours just so you can have an idea

Being Chinese, my mother raised me on the traditional Chinese diet, and it fulfills most of the 10 points. In the Chinese diet, Chinese people eat a lot of vegetables and legumes with the rice or noodles or packaged in flour buns. The vegetables are usually stir-fried, boiled in soups, or steamed. In Italian cooking, basil is commonly used as a spice or flavor enhancer. In Chinese cooking, ginger, Chinese chives, garlic, or green onions are used as flavor enhancers. Chinese people traditionally do not consume many dairy products. I think they get their calcium and vitamin D from the vegetables. Fruits may be eaten as a simple dessert or snack. Pork, chicken, sea creatures, and seaweed are eaten. Beef is not as commonly consumed as pork, but I think that's because cows are made to work manually in the fields. And Chinese Muslims do not consume pork. Rice is eaten on a daily basis at every meal. And sweets are an occasional treat. Woohoo! It looks like I've been following the precepts of the Mediterranean diet right by doing the Traditional Chinese diet. :-D

Sadly, few in the Mediterranean areas are eating in the traditional way, and that includes the Greeks. In fact the Greek's have a 43% obesity rate among their children. The only areas of the world with a higher child obesity rates is some of the Pacific islands. Sadly, too many people including those in the Med think the diet consists of pouring rivers of olive oil over every dish they eat. And, the bread, pasta and rice they eat is the white stuff, not the traditional whole grain products of times past. Meat has become a three times a day event instead of being eaten on holidays or Sundays.

raw olive oil is one of the healthiest things there are, just of course calory dense, but it has so many benefits...

citizenoftheworldsz9 I'm not saying that it isn't, I mean because she mentioned that they don't use any oil when cooking and they probably don't use RAW olive oil when they pour it over food.

I think this is because frying can turn even healthy fats like olive oil into saturated fat which is supposed to be bad for health; whereas, raw olive oil poured over food retains all the nutrients that you can get from it.

I've been living on that diet since forever...I'm from Egypt...another Mediterranean country with pretty much same food...and gotta tell you...I'm obese lol I never consumed KFC or McD only homemade meals full of fresh veggies...
This diet is really great compared to western diet...full of nutrients & probiotics...but you gotta count your cals...unless you are one of the lucky who don't put on weight easily...this diet is high in carbs and moderately high in fat..so it's not really the best thing ever.

genger alex Italian here and I totally agree... my problem was never what I eat but how much... In fact when consulted a dietician I got a diet which was basically my normal meals just different portions. I also ate McDonald food like 6 times in all my life.

    • @i_only_simp_for_myself800

genger alex even with the keto
Diet you can gaine weight if you consume more calories than you burn. You have to feel hungry to burn the fat! It’s not about low carb, low fat, or any other thing but about moderation! Peoples assume that a keto diet mean eating as much bacon and steak as they want so ofc they’re gonna gain weight just you like you will with a Mediterranean diet of you consume too much pasta, oats and legumes. Healthy food isn’t good cause it makes you loose weight but cause it usually fill you, with less kcals and you’re will have more energy by eating a banana than eating a burger.
But peoples these days, especially Americans consider that the moment when they start to starve then they have an eating disorder so they immediately grape something to eat. Lol. So that would mean that our ancestors who were hungry till they chased something to eat also had an eating disorder, and it’s untrue.
The body doesn’t even need food everyday, and it was proved that the 3 meals a day thing was only made by the medias so we will use more money on cereals and milk and other breakfast thing.
The truth is breakfast isn’t the most important meal! A decade ago we even had dietitians claiming that we need to eat every 2 hours to be healthy but it also turned out to be untrue.
Don’t let them fool you. Just work out, avoid processed food and proceed sugar cause you will just consume kcals without gaining energy and go on a calorie deficits, by following your own macros, and your BMI. Don’t starve yourself to death but you HAVE to be hungry so that your body will transform your fat into energy. Carb and fats are not your enemy, over consuming food is
