The Tyrolean Farm at @thezoovienna is an ark for threatened domestic breeds. Norikers, also known as Pinzgauers, are thriving there. The typical breed native to the Austrian and German Alps almost became a victim of industrialization, which posed a problem for many domestic horse breeds.
Because of the agricultural machinery being built and sold, horses had become superfluous. Without commercial usability, cultivated breeds often disappear quickly. This could be prevented for Norikers. The ancestors of the Norikers originally came to the Alpine region as legion horses. So it is a breed with a long history.
On the initiative of Archbishop Johann Jakob von Kuen, the first stud farm for the Noric horse breed was set up in the 16th century. This happened in Pinzgau. In the 17th century, Archbishop Count Thun issued guidelines for breeding. As a result, pure breeding became the prevailing principle.
In the 19th century, however, French draft stallions were crossed into the breed so that the breed could become more muscular. However, towards the end of the century, cooperatives were formed to promote pure breeding. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Austro-Bavarian Association for Noric Horse Breeding was founded.
The post-war period was also not a good time for the Norikers. The race became almost irrelevant, first through poverty, then through machines. In the 1980s, the ongoing reduction in the population could be stopped. Today there is renewed interest in preserving this special domestic breed.
Many breeds have found a home at Zoo Vienna's Tyrolean Farm. This starts with large horses and cows and extends to small chickens. » more: • Zoo Vienna: Sulmtaler ...
Norikers don't just live on the farm but also benefit from a network of different meadows and pastures in the area. This means they have enough space to run around and can be presented to visitors on the historic farm. Visitors of Zoo Vienna kind of travel back in time to wonderful cultural breeds like the Norikers.
