  • Palm cockatoos have been successfully bred at Loro Parque Foundation's breeding station for many years. The responsible curator Márcia Weinzettl gives insights into the breeding of black cockatoos.

The palm cockatoo or great black cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus) is close to being considered threatened in the wild. It belongs to the so-called "black" cockatoos. There are several threatened species in this group. Loro Parque, the only zoo where you can see all cockatoo species, has taken special care of this group of cockatoos and developed a breeding protocol.
When working with species like this, the aim is to build up a reserve population in human care. However, not every couple raises their offspring well. Their offspring would be lost for conservation breeding. So, the first clutch of the year is taken away from these problematic parents in order to secure the chicks. The parents will then have a second clutch to practice with.
Around 30% of the chicks are hand-reared. For this hand-rearing, a protocol has been developed for each species - including black cockatoos such as palm cockatoos - by the experts at the Loro Parque Foundation ( @LoroParqueFundacion ), which is constantly being improved. Visitors can see the hand-rearing, as it takes place in the Baby Station in Loro Parque ( @Loroparquetenerife ).
From the Baby Station, they go to a kindergarten and then to a large aviary. In the large aviary, the hand-reared cockatoos meet the cockatoos raised by their parents. Palm cockatoos only spend a few months with their parents, so they are long weaned by the time they go to the large aviary.
In this large aviary in the cockatoo area in Loro Parque - located in front of the entrance to Katandra Treetops - they can learn how to hand-raise from the cockatoos raised by their parents. This socialization will mean that it will no longer be possible to distinguish hand-raised birds from those raised by their parents. Once socialized in this way, they can find partners and then become a breeding couple. Then it starts all over again.
Curator Márcia Weinzettl is responsible for this constantly improving and increasingly successful system. She is an experienced biologist and breeder who joined the Loro Parque Foundation some years ago.

Breeding success is the key to preserving threatened parrot species. Fortunately, Loro Parque and its affiliated foundation, the Loro Parque Fundación, have already taken on the black cockatoos and especially the palm cockatoos. Waiting until all black cockatoos are threatened would not be a good idea, because breeding them is not very easy. It is therefore important that the protocols are drawn up now so that they can be implemented on a large scale in times of need and threat.
