- The Porsche 911 GT3 is back. The revised 991.2 GT3 is a stripped-out, track-ready, ultra-focused 911 with a new, 4.0-litre flat-six engine making 493bhp in the back of it.
It might look quite similar to its predecessor but they are thousands of changes under the skin to make one of the best sports cars in the world even better, including lessons it learned from the 911 GT3 RS and 911 R.
The biggest news of all, though, is that the new GT3 can be had with a manual gearbox! Guess what? This is not it! Argh.
But join us as we explain why not, and all that is fabulous, about Porsche's latest GT3, as we test it flat out at Anglesey Circuit, North Wales.
Is this the best GT3 ever? Comment Below

This is one of those cars that without reading, watching reviews, we all know it's going to be incredible
Damn spot on..
You know when a big car company decides to make a manual version they're gonna make a good car
Want mine ASAP! This review was never going to be anything other than fantastic. Looks like a worthy replacement to my RS even. Porsche 👏
TGE TV rah
Bravo!
Salomondrin give me a shoutout
Salomondrin love you
Another great review by Matt Prior....Absolutely everything you'd want to know and a few things you'd have forgotten to ask.
Thanks Dad.
This dude and his editing team has come a long way. Way way better than him a year ago. I hated him before
DEM BLAAZE yes I agree
DEM BLAAZE he has but it still feels phoned in because he's just the dorky guy who can't have fun. He can drive for example the laferrari and make it more boring than the carfection guy driving a Corsa.
Ta
I haven't driven a LaF :o(
i agree matt prior has come a long way in terms of car reviews
ive become a big porsche fan recently, always thought they were just a supped up vw bug but ive been binge watching porsche vids and i have fell in love with them. i never hear any car guy talk bad about them. i hope to get one some day.
So far, this, pistonheads, and carfection have all had a go at this new GT3. Can't wait for the video to drop when Chris Harris gets his hands on one!!
SPMNDK89 And Drivetribe
Exactly, & Drivetribe! Might as well put it 1st on the list!
Who needs a lateral-G instrument display when you have a Hoodie drawstring?
Darn good review, nailed it! Thoroughly enjoyed the track clip but the gobbledygook tech at the end is what we all needed every review to be like, good benchmark for other channels, thanks Mr Prior.
Ganooster Moppy Thanks
Matt keeps getting better and better. Having a new GT3 to review surely didn't hurt :)
Excellent review Matt. Well done!
OMG rear wheel lift at 4:56, On a rear mounted engine car, that's how stiff is that.
This is the most excited ive seen Matt Prior... maybe its cuz of the car... fliping incredible car the new GT3 is!
Want want want want want want want want.... Sold out :-(
Great Video Review and Matt Prior and his editing team have a great Job putting the Video together
this guy is so straight to the point, hes my fave reviewer ever....
Talaramama thanks bud
cool i struggled to find your name and hoped someone will comment, then realised just now its at the beginning of the video! and why it isnt in the info or even description? well never mind now but I tried to find other reviews you've done found nothing? were are they lurking or there isn't any?
Nicely done Matt! love the soundtrack at the end and of course the GT3's :)
getting this with a manual is like putting ketchup on a prime rib , that PDK is world class something you don't find on anything less than a Ferrari
Clous von why? Clearly a lot of owners don't care about tenths of a second and want something more interactive. A manual and three pedals offers that
love your reviews Matt, you steve sutcliffe, harris and jethro bovingdon are my favorites!
Propahhhh!
says every British car reviewer
luimarco loyallll
luimarco serious bit of kit
it's a proper thing
luimarco I always say that when I drive my car. imitate British car reviewers. pretty funny
Interesting that Porsche recommends the carbon brakes for street use and the steel brakes for track use!
Look at the price list for carbon-ceramic brakes and imagine how quick the wear in a race. I have them on my 911 and would not order them again., because they are hard to dose if you just want to break slightly.
Willy Willy Interesting, I always thought the point of getting the more expensive carbon brakes is so they last longer for track.
Willy Willy most track guys switch out the carbons for steel. Carbon brakes last close to 100,000 miles on the road, vs under 10k with track driving. If you're going to have to replace rotors regularly bc you are tracking it, better do that with $500 rotors vs $5000. Porsche steel brakes are excellent
It could just be a sales strategy to get more road-oriented drivers or less serious trackgoers to buy the ceramics.
Great video from Autocar and that gorgeous car!
MANUALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to see a dyno of the new GT3 power train overlapping the old one, so we could see the power and torque increase throughout the rev range.
I know this channel focuses on its older viewers because if I were reviewing this car, I would've said, "It revs OVER 9000!!!"
very well done whats not to like and the car is epic
Great review, guys!
Thanks Mike.
Lovin my 2018 GT3 manual club sport....
OMG it's Matt Prior with a smile! I guess the Chiron waked him up a little. Good to see some more enthusiasm. Might consider rewatching your reviews. Good job on this one.
I try.
i really really want to see a track dual between this and the GT3RS !!!!
Us too.
the old rs would get raped
gt3 in anglesey.
the weather is good.
perfect day I would say
I love Porsche and I will have a Porsche 911 soon
Great review and some pretty sweet driving!
Really cool of Porsche to offer both 6 speed and pdk, I think the manual will hold its value way better in the long run. But who knows.
What the.....? Great review from the start...good information...but where's the drive footage?? Impressions while driving...etc.
Naturally aspirated 911. Will there only be this one? Will they make the next GT3 RS a TT car? And still meet emissions requirements? Lamborghini has done it. So has Audi with their R8 V10 cars. So Porsche should still be able to do it.
If I were (and could afford a 911) it would be this GT3. LOVE the sound.
NA and PDK - hell yes!
Great review.
Possibly the car of 2017? Well so far at least...
Watched Carfections video before this, I'd say this is way better. How many redlines did you hear
over at Carfection? This is some proper hooning!
Ta.
Well done, lots of info from about 5:00 mins. Thanks. Cheers Robin
Seems like he is having heaps of fun.
Such a good review!
Nice video.. can't wait for my white Gt3😉
Jel
Love the PDK
so regular valve adjustments are now needed?
Damn I really need to win lottery!
Fantastic review! Thank you.
Mick Wrinkles pleasure
Great review! Super car.
Ultimate machine......
Great review. Thanx
COTTERO pleasure
What a Car! - Simply awesome!
Perfection with 4 wheels
This might be the first car ever without any drawbacks at all!
except where he said it always sounds like you have the window slightly open
I wish Porsche would make the 911R a regular production model. I just can't get into that spoiler.
u can remove the wing
Paulo KB But then you don't have the deployable spoiler when needed at higher speeds.
Well put a little fucking effort in and fit one. Or better yet, get a job so you can afford a polo.
Malc180s I own 3 911's. I'd like a 4th but Porsche isn't offering anything that catches my fancy.
Malc180s watch your fucking manners
awesome show
Thanks.
Brilliant!
Instant Like !!!
Best review.
I'd love to have a house facing that ocean and cliff, have that racetrack in my backyard looking at that ocean, with that car (in a manual) in my garage... perfect.. with my wife, my dog and a beer of course
😱😱For once this is a good autocar review. Also gone is the silly intro music
Porsche should make a 911 GT4 (GT3 but with 4WD) because I live in Canada and I want to daily this.
nice review and impressive driving
is that carmine red?
wow just wow
An awesome car. Matt says it's not the best 911 he's ever driven and it's not the best car he would choose for a track day in this review. Curious to know what is the best 911 track car in his opinion and what he would choose as his favourite car for this.
RomeoIndiaCharlie GT3 RS 4.0
Thanks. I guess the margins are slim when comparing at this level of automotive nirvana!
Came to see a manual and AUTOMATICALLY left when I didn't see one. *pun intended*
*With an aftermarket exhaust, I think the GT3 will sound worlds better..it's a bit too muted from the factory.*
COMRADE DONALD TRUMP thats because theres no v8 same idea in a flat six m3/m4
I'm more of a Ferrari fan, but wow!, that Porsche.....
aesthetically wise it's not that different from the gt3.1, but still i think the front end is a little bit weird
May I ask ..why are comments disabled on some of your videos whats that all about ..?
Dante' D' he knew you would be commenting on his videos.
I still prefer the 911R. Can't afford either.
People crying for a manual option but have they actually sold one?? None of the ones i`ve seen in the wild has been manual and none of the press car seem to be manuals
Great review ! Thanks Matt. Very detailed and informative, still don't get why Porsche only likes to sell to the privileged few... oh well. BTW assume Video editor didn't have enough footage, so he had to sub in some of Dan's (PH) ? ;-)
Rod Thompson We might have shared some video resource on the day...
awesomeness
Is this guy German with a British accent.... Same personality and excitement...... time to find another review
What's the difference with 911 GT3 RS?
Hendra Di nothing. lol. but Porsche fanboys get excited
Read more, has a different drivetrain, comes in manual & has a whole lot more changes engineered in it!
Da70Dude and uses a 4L engine instead of the 3.8L. People who know little about cars just love to criticise.
Just put it in the hands of The Great Chris Harris, then let me know when it's on..
the first time ever a car journalist made an accurate observation about carbon ceramic vs steel brakes. lol
Bar Gym Ha! Well they don't have to pay for them.
I have the option between this and an actual bmw z4 gt3 race car. Both are the same price. I can't make up my mind.
Where is the manual????? We want to see the manual
can the gt3 be made even lighter. say 1200kg 1300kg dry without making it heavier and more expensive.
Turbo s or gt3
Gt3
The only way to buy a 911
I wish it had a manual gear box
It does ,it is just not coming out now. Will have to wait a few months for the manual.
I am sorry but the hope was comparative feedback with the 991.1 GT3, and not a review in absolute sense... EVERYONE is in agreement how great the GT3 is...
4:10 Fool said Lexus 911 GT3 lol
Joel111spirit *latest* 911 GT3
This red doesnt fit very well on this car.Sport cars reached top level of what is posible so every next model will be more in other direction like hybryd sport car etc so at this moment we are in the best posible time for potent sport car.Porsche GT3 is 6 cilinder boxer with 4.0 liter displacment so its on peak of power too (6 cilinder cant get biger and retain hi rev posibility) from this configuration its posible to go up 40-60 hp max with 4.2-4.4l engine. They have two posibilities hybrid N/A or turbocharged
Wait, can he drive stick shifts?!
return of the wheels stripes! GTFO!!
How many Macans do you have to buy before an OPC will deign to sell you one?
In no world does this car cost £110k or anything near it, you'd have to spend the best part of half a million to get one new.
The real question here "Is it better than the 911R?"
In my opinion, both cars are amazing with differences so small to even notice by the average driver. The 911R is iconic and more limited in production however, the 991.2 GT3 with the manual gear box is everything the 911R is and then some as it's the cup car engine...
Summary....
The GT3 is less than half the cost of the 911R so I'll take the GT3 all day everyday....
Everybody say the 911 they test is the best. So what is actual best?
Nan Li GT3 RS 4.0 is still the best, imho.
I'd take this over any forced induction engine
get rid of the red tach!!
And why the hell can't any journalist get the information about helper springs right!!!! how the hell does adding another spring reduce unsprung mass! WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Because it allows the main spring to be lighter, thus reducing overall unsprung weight. Right right right.
The 911 RS, RSR, etc. still uses this lighter dual springs and as you can see on the picture, the single spring is a heavy massive piece of metal and dual springs save a lot of weight.
www.elephantracing.com/tool-box/specs/991/GT3/991-porsche-gt3-suspension-walkaround-2.jpg
9lf.de/994-big_default/albert-motorsport-996-gt3-cup-fahrwerk-federn-satz.jpg
Wrong again. The weight difference is almost nothing. The longer spring is thinner while the smaller spring is thicker with a much higher spring rate. Added to the fact the helper spring adds weight as well.
From my colleagues at pistonheads:
PH: "What's the main benefit of the helper spring - is it keeping damper stroke while maintaining low ride height?"
AP: "This is one of the reasons but the main one is weight, we can use a shorter main spring and the travel when you go over a crest for example you don't need as much pressure to get the wheel down because there is gravity working for you. In summary it is mainly a weight thing and it has other advantages as well but it can save weight better. Because the helper spring is a lot thinner and smaller and lighter and for the travel out of the wheelarches with one spring you have to make compromises."
But feel free to take it up with the Director of Porsche's GT model line and tell him he's got it all wrong.
Rick2010100 this is not a comparable outline. For one the photo of the first gt3 is of a street car. The second is of a track car. Why anyone would use the below spring on the street is beyond stupid. You'd only have about 2 inches or less of spring travel before binding or hitting bumpstop. They spring on the road car would be longer still and almost equal in weight as the longer spring.
for me at this point a lot of cars aren't impressive anymore. I mean look at the 10 year old gtr which is ever so fast if you pick the prime model.
But with 400 kilos +
The Huracan has a fake Ring time, lots of manufacturers cheat, some don't want to publish anything.
I therefore salute Amg for their work with their very own "GTR" which for me is practically the best car at the moment.
Watermelon you beautiful little unicorn
THERE NO IS SUBSTITUTE
pdk > manual.
Same review as .1 version. These guys really have little to say beyond fodder for their audience
Dave Cohn Not sure I made a vid on the .1 version.
Praise the lord it aint turbocharged
