I always felt that Belew stood in the shadow of Robert Fripp. Only recently I'm discovering that he's really an incredible musician in his own way, and totally unique. Totally away from the mainstream, lame-ass "shredder" bullshit in every way. We need more like him.
People who just think this a pile of notes are delusional. Ironically, the dame criticism was made of Mozart Hé exemplifies the concept of all this machinery making moderne music in the most open hearted Way! Beautiful, haunting, inspiring
Kaliye Palata Back when I did concert production I produced one of Living Color's concerts in Santa Barbara. Same era as Simple Minds, The Bangles, The Untouchables, Oingo Boingo, a very young Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Replacements, etc. Good times producing concerts. They were excellent live.
If you haven't seen it, please watch TALKING HEADS LIVE IN ROME 1980, remain in light band on tour,on fire, Adrian brings the bagpipes, dolphin, seagull, space chicken, on top of the happiest funkiest live band ever.
fair play he's damn good at that synth guitar a duet and looped all at the same time doesn't miss a beat or bat an eye lid no ape faces just pure clever. not a hope in hell of anyone copying his style. a one of a kind horse of many colours Adrian Belew he just get's better as he's grown old 👁🗨👁👏👏👏
In my opinion, it was Fripp, who changed and developed Belew's guitar style and technique this way. This video basically shows, what guitar techniques and what playstyle you had to have, when wanted to be in King Crimson.
deathtokoalas I agree. In KC, Fripp & Belew are perfect compliments to each other, they really 'play as one' to me more than any other guitar duo. But each one has their own style & their own sound. Belew's other music outside of KC, & especially his solo work, really is unique & not much akin to his KC personality & musicianship.
I could agree in part although you can apply the same to Fripp regarding the influence of Eno in the development of what became Frippertronics. If you listen to the precursor to the rejuvenated 80's KC incarnation The League of Gentlemen, you begin to hear Adrian's contribution as something more essential to the project, at least I do.
I also think that's fair but they kinda had the same approach to the instrument, and vision, only with the difference that Adrian also had a good commercial aproach to songwriting. He was already thinking in a way pop artists later on started to think of. So was the majority of Prog outfits.
My favourite guitarist and how easely is playing this Parker guitar (model with his signature) and I love this man from his begining when he played with Zappa ,Bowie ,King Crimson etc and etc... and thanks for this video as well vpro vrije geluiden...
somebody use to say that some musicians are like painters ... great! it's such a fascinating trip and the arpeggios in the end are very strong. great great Adrian
Having watched this piece develop over the span of about three years, I have to take issue with the "pile of notes" people. This song reflects a journey. Listen for the train pulling out of the station, rattling down the tracks, stopping for fuel, pulling out again, reaching its destination.... just as another train pulls away from the platform.
Before everyone praised the Edge's guitar technobabble, there was Adrian with a lot of pedals, but also with a lot of heart. He's the real sonic architect.
Adrian Belew a) Seems like a really nice guy, b) seems like he has a good sense of humour, c) is a GREAT guitarist, d) has an incredible singing voice, e) is massively prolific. Jedward are probably richer than him tenfold. Where is the justice?
Right on all accounts. Never sings out of key and such a great guitar player. And yes, very friendly and talkative. Met him at bar after a solo performance. All Crimsons btw......I met all, except sir Fripp. Impossible to approach..
@christopherzberlin I know exactly what you mean. I bought "E" and had a hard time relating to the music. Until I saw him live with the Power Trio and Metropole Orchestra, that is. Everything made a lot of sense all of a sudden. I now enjoy "E" and this stuff much more. It´s all about taking joy in the dynamics, I guess.
Absolutely. It was more of an attempt to express my own distaste for the genre as opposed to an empirical statement about its artistic value. Perhaps next time I'll drop the derogatory term altogether.
I appreciate your appreciation, but you overstate the case; many people do not overlook him, which is why he gigs all the time, has played with everyone from A to Z (Laurie Anderson to Frank Zappa), and continues kicking ass on the world's stages and in it's studios.
All controlled noodling. A song with parts and emotion especially all of the buildups. He really is an innovator using the transition between analogue and digital merger. Use both. That is true progressive music.
Exactly; he is a great model of success in my eyes; much more so than a crappy band that makes millions. He makes enough to have a good life with what he makes from music, (even a $10k+ guitar), has thousands of fans, and lives his dream. Millions of fans would be nice, but maybe it's more fun to play 300 seat theaters; I wouldn't know. I know if I were in his position, I'd be pretty psyched!
NOT overlooked by Trent Reznor. On February 25, 2013, Trent Reznor announced that Belew would be joining Nine Inch Nails for a full tour in 2013 and 2014. They will also be making a new album.
Frank Zappa let Belew just rip it. (See: 'City of Tiny Lights') He has a beautiful voice with great range. Belew can do these type of compositions until he gets old and gray.
@rdomain The setup is pretty basic these days: Parker Adrian Belew Signature Fly Deluxe, equipped with Sustainiac pickup at the bridge position, and on-board Vari-Axe technology. Ade feeds this directly to a Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra; the speakers are Atomic (in partnership with Fractal) powered wedges. The Liquid-Foot Pro selector pedal is also a Fractal Audio piece. As for techniques.... what Adrian told me was "practice. a LOT." I disagree with those who heard this as a "pile of notes."
It think it's all about expression and perception. It is art? Still that is a presumption based on some knowledge of the context, with all due respect to objective and subjective perception. The professionalism here is supreme, expression is the key though. As a composition I personally think this is an expression of the artist and technology. There’s a lot going on here but it does take a prepared mind to fully appreciate it?
this kind of music is like playing sudoku - don't get me wrong, belew is a master in his class but come on - is that emotional? a very rational structured pile of notes...
Ahh, de Parker Fly wordt dus toch nog gebruikt! Hi-tech gitaarsynthesizermuziek, daar hoort-ie wel bij. Zou Adrian zelf ook alles sjouwen? ;-) Sounds great though...
That is all true to an extent; but it's a ridiculous standard that fails to recognize great success until you're a household name; in other words a multimillionaire superstar. Belew has graced the covers of many major guitar and music mags, played for everyone from Laurie Anderson, to David Bowie, to Zappa. Few musicians ever reach his level of commercial and artistic success, yet he can be called "overlooked" because the average person on the street never heard of him.
Adrian, you are so mentally superb, i cant stand it! No, i can, ....but seriously,.... W.T.F.!!!!! I cant! You fucking genious!!!!! What? Okay, ...... What!!!!! Human beings dont do what you do.,.....so,.... Im curious. Where are you frum?
I'm sure Adrian would disagree with you in calling country and bluegrass "crap". It's not my cup of tea most of the time, but there are many amazing artists in both genres.
@christopherzberlin I was thinking exactly the same thing. It takes some skill, and Adrian is one of the best musicians in the world, but this song seems to lack any emotion. Like you said "... a pile of notes". They can't all be zingers, I guess. Adrian still has some great stuff that is inspiring.
I wouldn't if that comment hadn't sprung onto my face unsolicitedly, and completely infected my susceptible imagination with boring imagery. Also, I don't buy the "Having watched this piece develop over the span of about three years" so i know everything about it crap. Good day to you, Sir.
There is no justice in personal taste, but who the heck is Jedward? Some horrible band that makes lots of money? Adrian does all right, so I won't waste any time stressing over all the hacks that make more money. Otherwise, I emphatically agree with points a-e.
If one has a keen eye they will notice that as a copy is copied over and again it changes. What you start with is not what you finish with. IN the hands of an artist you may have something to show an interested audience. In a passerby it will just be a picture copied.
I always felt that Belew stood in the shadow of Robert Fripp. Only recently I'm discovering that he's really an incredible musician in his own way, and totally unique. Totally away from the mainstream, lame-ass "shredder" bullshit in every way. We need more like him.
The genius of this man! More than half of the notes we hear aren't actually played on the guitar.
People who just think this a pile of notes are delusional. Ironically, the dame criticism was made of Mozart
Hé exemplifies the concept of all this machinery making moderne music in the most open hearted Way!
Beautiful, haunting, inspiring
Kinda like Vernon Reid if you know who that is?
Kaliye Palata Back when I did concert production I produced one of Living Color's concerts in Santa Barbara. Same era as Simple Minds, The Bangles, The Untouchables, Oingo Boingo, a very young Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Replacements, etc. Good times producing concerts. They were excellent live.
+John Smith I was talking about Vernon's guitar playing.
He has the ultimate combination of weird atonal and beautiful melodic sound
If you haven't seen it, please watch TALKING HEADS LIVE IN ROME 1980, remain in light band on tour,on fire, Adrian brings the bagpipes, dolphin, seagull, space chicken, on top of the happiest funkiest live band ever.
Stunning video
fair play he's damn good at that synth guitar a duet and looped all at the same time

not a hope in hell of anyone copying his style.
a one of a kind horse of many colours
Adrian Belew he just get's better as he's grown old 👁🗨👁👏👏👏
Few could possibly compliment both Zappa and Fripp so well.
In my opinion, it was Fripp, who changed and developed Belew's guitar style and technique this way. This video basically shows, what guitar techniques and what playstyle you had to have, when wanted to be in King Crimson.

Huh. So he had little to do with his own composition? Huh.

Best thing I’ve heard in years - thank you for uploading ❤️
And the shirt matches the song just perfectly!!!!
My favourite guitarist and how easely is playing this Parker guitar (model with his signature) and I love this man from his begining when he played with Zappa ,Bowie ,King Crimson etc and etc... and thanks for this video as well vpro vrije geluiden...
I'm right there with you. I've been fortunate to see him with Crimson and Power Trio five times live. Class act.
Agree guys. Met him after solo gig at time of this performance. True virtuos musician and mega friendly
somebody use to say that some musicians are like painters ... great! it's such a fascinating trip and the arpeggios in the end are very strong. great great Adrian
I like Adrian. Listen first time in 80s with Laurie Anderson. Never more stop listen. Love!
One of the few people who show that not all kentuckians are into country/bluegrass crap.
Sounds like a Philip Glass piece. I like it.
simply beautiful! there is nothing i can say about this piece of music that it has not already said about itself!
A Genius at work!
Oh shiiiiiiiit.... Good shit man
Shades of Zeus B Held and Brian May. This is epic-ungodly.
Just beautiful! So fresh and compelling -- and haunting. Thank you!
Utterly mind bogglingly inspired.
Belew should be doing Soundtracks to movies! Really knows how to set a Mood and just take you away........Brilliant!
genius musician
so good but very funny, i want to laugh hysterically in parts, very helpful

wow stumbled onto this baked and it blew my mind, thanks adrian
Astonishing. As usual, utterly unique and innovative. I was lucky to see him at Gateshead Sage last year. Brilliant. There's only one Adrian Belew.
I dig it. A breakdown of his setup and techniques would be awesome. Love Belew.
Adrian Belew a) Seems like a really nice guy, b) seems like he has a good sense of humour, c) is a GREAT guitarist, d) has an incredible singing voice, e) is massively prolific. Jedward are probably richer than him tenfold. Where is the justice?

Genius, Absolute Genius

awesome awkard tunes...Insanely fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love it!!
That was great.
Adrian is in a class of his own, much better than King Krimson.
All controlled noodling. A song with parts and emotion especially all of the buildups. He really is an innovator using the transition between analogue and digital merger. Use both. That is true progressive music.
❤❤
amazing
the only guy in the world that is allowed to wear mocassins like that
.....and still ROCKS like hell!!
Master at work
I love this song! Any chance it will be in the next CD?
Yeah! unique mind among humanity!

Any guitar player around who is more inventive?
Frank Zappa let Belew just rip it. (See: 'City of Tiny Lights') He has a beautiful voice with great range. Belew can do these type of compositions until he gets old and gray.
Jeeeeezus!
Any way I can get good audio of this performance? (Not youtube rip but good quality)
I like it!

where is this available to buy?
Bluegrass is certainly not crap. Do yourself a favor and check out a talented bluegass band like the Infamous Stringdusters.
Whats he using?
There's a ghost at 2:50

Its like listening to a photo copier.

yes and to be honest i dont like this music in particular, to much machine sequencer and not enough human
why?
Boring! Just put a machine on stage and hit play. Is this what guitar playing has come to?
what?
the guitar becomes irrelevant, its just techno mumbo jumbo
i like it... isn't it alright to use guitar as a means of sound and style?
Me? I do occasionally but that's not a nylon guitar and Belew doesn't want to play classical style guitar
