- Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of Adrian Belew. I've had a number of requests to feature some of Adrian's music and that combined with the news/updates surrounding the upcoming 'Beat' King Crimson tribute tour (with Steve Vai, Tony Levin, Danny Carey, and Adrian Belew himself), needless to say Adrian's music has been on my mind lately and I'm glad to finally feature him on the LNL channel - so let's dive in!
The chord-based and rhythm guitar examples in this lesson were pulled from four Adrian Belew-related albums, including his solo material and also the first album from his project The Bears. This includes sections from songs such as Naïve Guitar, Ballet For A Blue Whale, Superboy, None Of The Above, Beautiful, and more!
Needless to say, if you're an Adrian Belew fan, a fan of experimental/avant-garde guitar playing, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson sis totally for you! adrain is a big time hero of mine
met him and seen him many times thank him for tons of wonderful kc music and lyrics
There are so ways to get there w/o breaking the bank. He and Robert both used lots of guitar synth mixed in, but they also used EXH Muff's I think Adrienne used the eq version. For the cleaner stuff, a good vibrato and/or chorus helps (Lot's of Roland JC back then). And like so much of it: it all sounds better loud! LOL. Oh, and just play around with delays and reverse delays.
And another excellent lesson. Thank you, David.
Randy Rhoads....please.
I have tickets for Beat. I can't wait.
Lone rino lp is my #1 dessert island pick…every song is so good, he plays the drums too…his voice just beautifully soars, and fretless bass adds a lot of slippery character…if you have heard it you should
Adrian is a legend. My hero.
Belew, Levin, Vai, and Carey Announce Full “Beat” Tour Dates.
Thank You DAVID!
Thanks for this! Huge AB fan and have my BEAT tix. A constant source of inspiration!
Brilliant!!
Thank you so much for tackling None of the Above. I have been playing the E-shape parts wrong for years -- always knew they weren't quite right, but now you've set me straight!
Thanks for this one! This may not be right, but I think he tunes in 4ths so he might have different ways to get to those sounds. He's so prolific and creative - and a joy to watch live. Great work on this, David!
Always enjoy your chord play episodes David!!🎸🎸😎😎
Forward thinking is right but there's many beautiful textures and sounds here I love those sus 2 cords I use them with high gain it makes for such thick sounding cords great job reproducing his work David 👏👍🤘
Thanks so much! I listened to Lone Rhino for years, never got tired of it. You nailed the tone!!
Great channel David, longtime subscriber. Got my tix for BEAT at the Ryman in Oct. Maybe I’ll see you there! 🤘
You're a BIG Electric CAT, Dave. Best man on RUclips. Mr B makes guitar exciting and adventurous. Thank God he made so much music.
I've bee a Belew fan since Lone Rhino and then I got Sheikh Yerbouti by Zappa. I also had the amazing instructional video that he did back in the day, wore it out and so happy it's now on RUclips for all to enjoy :)

Adrian also used some altered tunings in his earlier stuff like tuning the G string up to an A in songs like 'Life without a Cage'. Another was tuning the high E string down to a C. Such an innovator and creative contributor to all he touched. 'Call Me Al' by Paul Simon features him on guitar synth (he does the trumpet line that comes in after the chorus for instance) as does Mr Self Destruct by NIN. He also wrote all the lyrics and vocal melodies for every song that King Crimson played while he was in the band but didn't get credited for this. Great choice David and whoever else suggested this.
Thanks much for the link ! 😊
Beautiful David 🎸☮️📖thank you.
Sorry I'm a couple minutes late. Was watching the Fender commercial of VooDoo Chile. 👍😃 Adrian Belew is a special talent for sure. I have to add, I read an article with Robert Fripp and Andy Summers(both are great friends) and Andy brought up Every Little Thing She does and apologized to Robert for stealing the sus2 chords in the song. Apparently Robert had showed him a progression that was similar. They both had a laugh.
Cant wait for the Beat show in PHX
He has always been one of the most underrated guitarist.
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also today is my friends birthday ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Wow you nailed Naive Guitar! It's so on point
Great stuff Dave! This may be controversial, however, how about a chord play of Takayoshi Ohmura (BabyMetal) and/or Zebra.
toujours au top
I'd really like you to explore guitarist Matthew Ashman on Adam and the Ants' Dirk Wears White Sox album. Or, John McGeoch on Magazine's first three albums, and three albums with Siouxsie and the Banshees. Just a suggestion.
Excellent episode, I'm sure everyone is looking forward to Beat. Vai just did an interview on working on his picking techniques for covering Fripp's guitar parts. Really interesting.
Is that actually volume swells? That's the way I did too. But I thought he was doing it with guitar synth. Any who Lone Rhino, Twang Bar King and Young Lions were the albums I was into and were a big influence. Gotta say his power trio sounds real good also. Thanks Dave. Rock on!
Elephant Talk chord?
He lived in my home town (Springfield, Illinois) for a while when I was a kid. I got ahold of his phone number, called and asked if he would give me guitar lessons. He said no. 😂
Hi , Are you using the V-Amp straight to the interface?
Ballet …… is tuned …. G up to A ….. as are a lot of twang bar king and some KC …. Thanks for your lesson …. :)
What amp did you get, David?

Never seen anyone better at volume swells from the guitar than Yngwie J Malmsteen.
