**. A small correction, that's not chicken wire, it's called hardware fabric or hardware cloth. Chicken wire has roundish holes in it that are bigger and lighter than this. What you used would actually protect your kitties from interlopers and predators even better than chicken wire. :)
If you live in a buggy area, you could use aluminum or nylon screening, and you'd probably want to fill in the gaps between the bookcase frames and the side of your house. Great idea for apartment dwellers with balconies, too!
Katma Tally get roll fly screen use for windows.
@@Kt-cn2rq they make a streachy type especially for animals. Can buy at general hardware stores.
Good idea, but use insect screening alongside the hardware fabric, but not instead of it, because screening won't stop any self-respecting cat from shredding and escaping. ;)
Katma Tally As Mary Sanchez said above, use insect screening alongside the hardware fabric. I’ll add another reason why: COYOTES. Coyotes have been known to successfully tear through screening on porches to take cats; it’s not pretty.
Thi was such a help
Shifted my brain to New ideas. No longer seeing I have to spend a lot or at 70 get a carpenter! To help my 5 rescue cats.
Pure genius! I’ve been looking for the most economical way to build a catio for our two cats and this looks like it would fit the bill perfectly. Thank you!
This is darling! I did same with one of those wire shelves. I would put real cat grass and cat mint in there. Also good to put potted wildflowers on outside to attract birds and butterflies. Would not hang string like that as they can get caught in or eat. I would get WOOL carpet remnants for shelves for them to sit on. And I would paint with Non-Toxic paint to preserve.
Gotta also keep in mind - cats outside, even in cateos, are susceptible to cat viruses, etc. so confer with your vet what’s going around in your area in relation to vaccines. Cats are so happy to have these cateos, especially those that always want to go outside. This will keep them from bugging you .
1catmac Lots of good ideas!
1catmac for sure real cat grass etc. Large pads to stretch out on. Of course.
Danger! Do not suspend cat toys as shown. It is hazardous and may cause strangulation! 1:24 The two strings twist together before the cut. You do not want to hang your cat.
I accidentally left the cat toy that have string and a toy attached to it thinking nothing bad would happen.. I went back in the afternoon and saw the string already strangling my cat's neck😭😭😭 thanked God nothing serious happened.. But I knew if I was late my cat could die.. I stopped putting the collar as well now
One of my cats would eat the string. Very dangerous.
Seriously?
You can use a collar but it needs to be a cat collar specifically. Cat collars are made to pull apart under pressure to prevent strangulation. Never use dog collars on cats.
I came here to say that too! I learned the hard way about this. Luckily the kitten was fine and it only trapped her tail and I was there to help her but had I not been it could have been a disaster.
Simple yet practical and oh so cute! Thanx for the smart idea. So much more simple than some other diy catio's. I love it.
Brilliant!!!!!! Cats can act so painfully aloof.......upon creation, be patient.......observe, add stuff, be creative......make it fun for you too. Now, I just have to get Dad into it! ♥
Pure Genius. Something even I can build. Thank you so much for sharing
Awesome Project~! Truly. Glad you used chicken wire with such small holes because we used wire with larger holes than that and small birds fly in :*( So far only one's gone to Heaven :( But I've rescued a few and gotten them out. :)
It's not chicken wire, it's called hardware cloth/hardware fabric. I wouldn't use real chicken wire, regardless of the hole diameters, for chickens because Cooper's hawks will stick their feet through the holes and mangle the chickens, and raccoons can do just as much damage, so can weasels and other predators. Hardware fabric is more predator-proof,for any beloved pets.
Anyone who's actually built it, did you seal or weather proof it in any way? The materials are unfinished right?
Yay! Finally something I can make for my cats! Thank you!
Great idea! I'm sure your fur-baby loves it
How did you weather proof this? Seems like a great idea!
I think this could be weather proofed with some polyurethane coating, maybe some sort of tin sheet roof with a little extra over it as awning, and a waterproof “foundation” to go under the catio.
That was my question, the Hejne shelves are untreated wood. You would probably want to put some sealant on that wood before it had to sit in the weather.
a cute hangout place for them on summer days 😊 ! Brilliant
What they are calling chicken wire in this video is actually hardware cloth. Chicken wire is a hexagonal mesh with a large enough space for a cat to reach a paw through.
Will Dwyer hardware cloth? Do they call it by any other name?
@@lightningbug276 that seems to be the name. Sold at hardware stores- comes in roles like actual cloth/fabric. I only heard about this recently when friends talked about chicken coops and securing them against predators.
Looks nice especially if you want some sleep in the bedroom or go shopping. Even for a balcony. Doesnt take uo too much space..
I want to make this, Could you please link the IKEA shelving unit you used?
Looks great! Now make it bigger. 😃
Thanks for sharing this idea and this video! It helped me make one of my own!
Hello! Can I ask what sized staples you used and which staple gun you may recommend? Great job!
Lol nooo you cant ask that
How has the wood been holding up throughout the rain and winter?
Install an awning or roof in that area and have to raise the floor to prevent flooding.
Painting
Polyurethane coating! But from home Depot and brush it on
Great idea! I'm trying to figure out how I'd attach it to the side of a building that's textured stucco (and an apartment building, so I don't want to screw into the wall with cement anchors) Any suggestions? I read adhesive works only on a smooth surface. This is that bumpy stucco.
Do not hang toys on such a long bit of twine. This could strangle or insure a cat. Never hang any toy on a piece of twine that is longer than the circumference of a cat's neck.
Do you even have cats? Unless you actually tied the twine around your own cat's neck, your suggestion goes without merit.
Huh? There's no way a cat is going to hang themselves. Move along
Hoogla Boogla maybe it’s rare but it really can happen, I had to rescue my cat from one of the twines on his cat tree. It was really traumatizing for both him and me. I’ve been paranoid ever since
@@daveg4236 One of my best friends cat almost strangled itself to death (by accident of course) because it got stuck in chair somehow, he was keeping himself up for a long time until they came home, when they went to the room where he was - they saw him barely having any strength left dying. Thank God they made it in time.
It def can happen. They make the mice that hang from doors with break away collar ends in the middle for that reason...im actually looking at one hanging from my door as i type this. Those pieces may be tough to come by unless u cannibalized ones from a collar, but expensive.
When i build mine anything hanging will be attached with two pieces of string with very small magnets between. That way if they get stuck it will break away with ease.
Always be sure to have a top on your catio or cats will climb out! The wire shown is hardware wire not chicken wire. Use hardware wire as it is much stronger. Also you can get pet flaps (doors) to fit most windows. Or use a piece of wood & insert a pet flap (much cheaper). You don’t want to leave the window open or close it & lock kitty out.
Rather than cuteness stuff cats can’t use I hung a windchime at the top of my catio so they can enjoy the sound. You can also hang toys tied to the ends of elastic strings or long strips of fleece.😻
Meh ! Farmers refer to it as rabbit mesh, commonly used for rabbits and guinea pigs so, yeah whatever.
Hello, what do we use for doors? What pieces are they from and if they’re not from the Hejn shelves what do we do?
Great, it looks so easy to do🤩 Thank you for this DIY!
I just made one of these and my cats don't give a sh*t...
Goodbye steve 😥
Talking Kitty Cat its just a cage to some cats...others might like it i guess
try using some treats to lure them in
They have other choice?
how the heck do you have 3 million subs, and yet you aren't verified
What a terrific idea.
Looks like it can be built wider with double the bookcases? Wishful thinking for now, but I'd want to adopt two cats instead of one... ❤
Thanks for this video!
*meant 4 cases rather than 2
Bella Blossom Actually, cats are very territorial and naturally loners. Multiple cats only works if you get bonded siblings. Often people don’t realize how much it stresses their cat to being a strange new cat into their territory. It’s quite mean.
schmilbomb I had 1 cat for 2 years then decided to get another one and he seems happier now. They love to play and chase each other around and since my cats are indoor cats (hence the video lol) I love that they burn energy being together. ❤️ best decisión ever
I was thinking the same doing it with four shelves to make it wider.
missmayflower actually, indoor cats are BETTER off with another cat. They get very bored otherwise. Having another cat to interact with enriches their lives. Two females or a male/female pair (fixed, obviously) will usually get along. Two males are sometimes more difficult but if they’re neutered they shouldn’t be aggressive with each other.
This would be awesome for my cat! Does anyone have any ideas for securing to the walls without drilling - I live in an apartment complex on the bottom floor, so it would be on the outside of the building, which I think is stucco? Don't want to have yet another thing that the complex will ding me on when I move out LOL! Maybe heavy duty Command strips?.....
Maybe just wedge it against the wall with something heavy?
Turned out it was heavy enough without anything holding it down - I got a plastic door stop and wedged it underneath the bottom and that seems to be doing a good job so far. I'm going to be adding to it this week with another two shelves so I think that will also help stabilize it. My cat loves it! :)
@@Kalocia023 awesome! Just bought the shelves myself and will be building it when they get here!
Janet Harkness I had same situation - used two big potted plants shoved up against mine to secure in place.
I have the same question, but I live on the top floor, (10th), so I would actually need to attach it somehow. Any ideas anyone?
If the shelves come with a clear coat to prevent water damage and warping that might hold up s good five or eight years.
Yeah, a nice heavy coat of polyurethane would be a good idea.
Great Reply's.
Those kind of chemicals may hurt your cat, especially when scratching the wood, or laying directly on it.
Get unfinished if possible and use non toxic paint
raw linseed oil works well and is non-toxic
I am a subscriber and I love cats and this video.
Cute ●♡●
Reasonable, Just Enough, Fun & Relaxing
AWESOME VIDEO!!!
I love what you do cuteness! Keep up the great work
😊😊😊
😃😃😃😃😃
This is great! I would agree though that suspending the cat toys like that is potentially dangerous, and I would put an actual lock on the catio door to prevent anyone from just going up and letting kitty out. I've known of kids going into people's yards, (some adults too unfortunately), and release or outright steal a cat.
That's when I'd let our Doberman out. It pays to read the sign.
How cute! My cat would love that 😽😺
Is the Ikea shelving intended for outdoor use?
Creative enclosure
I love this idea!
Thank you so much 😊
Brilliant idea, thanks for sharing.
This looks awesome! But how do you secure the shelves to the outside wall if it's made of brick?
ruclips.net/video/58BvyxFbt3Y/видео.html
Now if we could figure how to get Ikea shipped to Hawaii for free and we'd be set... >____
Try Craigslist?
Walmart also sells the shelves
do you have to secure it to the house? I want to do this but am currently renting and can't put any holes etc in walls exterior or interior.
I'd imagine if you asked you could maybe add hardware "eyes" top and bottom for each side and put corresponding hooks on the catio and affix it that way, and have extruding boxed panel going along the top bottom and sides to fill the gap. It could be removed for maintenance or weatherproofing and updating and there'd be 4 pieces of hardware to remove and fill holes for instead of however many screw holes you'd need to affix it permanently like the video.
Wish I had a window that opend to my balkony. I would so make this for my cat!
But without the strings! I don't want my baby to hang itself while playing!! NEVER EVER leave your cat alone with strings like that. Specially not 2 at ones. IF you do want to hang a play thing. Use shorter string so the cat can't get tangled in it. Or use thicker and stiffer rope. I don't think a catio needs something like this tho. Its for airing and watching birdies and the occasional bug thats stupid enough to venture inside it. Play can be done indoors where there is enough room for silly jumps and running.
Link to this from Ikea please
gotta try this
That's hardware cloth, not chicken wire. Hardware cloth like in the video is good. Chicken wire is ugly and has much wider gaps. Excellent idea to use these bookcases!
Great idea!!!
Cool idea. Txs 4 Video. Need to do this,For my Cat. 😊.👍
What is the bookcase name on IKEAs website?
Great idea
Will definitely do!
Such a great idea!
Clever idea.
Whats the name of that ikea bookshelves
Hejne
wonderful
Love it!
Yes ! Awesome ! Cool ! Thank you.
🙏
Omg so beautiful!
Great idea!
Love this idea, it's going to be a spring project for me (and my cats). Cuteness, can you please tell us how the two bookcases are attached to each other? I am building challenged, so would greatly appreciate it.
IKEA has a double wide one, which you could probably use instead of attaching to separate ones
I believe that stapling wire to first bookcase and carrying wire across and staple the wire to the second one, stretching it tightly would be secure.
If you havent built this already, what you do is simply only use one pole in the middle and attach shelves coming off either hole (there are 2 lines of holes)
I like it👍
cuteness
do you know the name of the product of the ikea bookcase?
Hejne shelves. Use a waterproofing spray paint before assembly.
Hi, just wondering are the two separate shelving units the same size and do you have to move a platform on the second one or reinforce it with a different wood?
What were the dimensions of the bookshelf from IKEA
get both sizes
Too small, use four ikea shelves. Velcro doors work well too, if you don’t have power tools.
How do you stagger the shelves?
its. a. book. shelf.
Please can someone tell me how to make a catio for an apartment bedroom window, NOT on a balcony....?! I'm renting a room & there's no balcony. It'd definitely have to be removable & C H E A P to make. I'm stuck seeing all these beautiful custom catios & my cats are stuck in here all day
He is a clone of my Kitty
Just out of curiosity how good is chicken wire with cats? Personally i don't much like the idea because our neighbour tried fixing his fence with that stuff and my dog chewed it and went under it.
how good is chicken wire with cats?? its terrible...………...that's why he used it! what a dumbass
@@chiqichiqi I am surprised you have cats as they generally don't like sarcastic people.
I used 2x4 coated wire on mine so butterflies could come through. I have chicken wire on my other and no issue with cats, though you fo need to be watchful of coyotes - they can and will try
wut that book cage called?
Zi Du what do you mean?
It was made from 2 Hejne shelves
You need to make it so that it won’t wobble on the dirt and grass. Add something to the wood so it’s water proof and all that fun jazz. It’s a pretty vague video so I suggest watching something else guys ^^
If the fake grass is plastic, don't use. The top of the fake grass is sharp & uncomfortable. Also it will poke into eyes and paws.
I really like your design, nice job. See our build at Karin and Larry at Home. Take care, Larry
Nice
You really should install some flashing if you are going to be screwing anything into the side of you house.
Don’t think this would hold up in a climate with cold snowy winters
It's not chicken wire it is Hardware cloth
I like it
Neat
Great idea but it's not chicken wire; it's called hardware wire. Chicken wire [poultry netting] is totally different.
i like it, but i think in my climate it will rot down in one season
No chicken wire was used to build this. It's called rat wire or welded wire.
Chicken wire has eye holes too small. THe gage should have been larger for the cats to see out, at least with one side of their face.
See:
www.fenceguides.com/types/wire-fences/
great, my cats would love it....but I live on the 5th floor....
Deborah Martinez same lol put it in the apartment?
Deborah Martinez ponlo suspendido. Como un balcon prquenito
There is a product that is expensive but made for balconies. It has a no jump angled hinge at top.
Naomi Curtis what is that product?
Can’t raccoons etc break into the chicken wire?
It's a small narrow catio try to make it bigger please
@Big
Why am i watching catio videos? I can never have a little cia spy... i mean cat. (Allergic)
sad for you honey. Maybe hook up with a rescue that specializes in fur less fur babies.........?
@@marsharina59 better not. I can not even keep a plant alive for longer than 2 month, i love animals to much to do that to them....
I will just cuddle with the cats and dogs of my friends for half an hour befor changing so it will not get to bad...
Only problem is the damn neighbors cat pissing on it!!!!!
Awesome idea 💡🏆🏆🏆🏆
Get Off Your Bass And Lets Fish Surround the catio with a slightly larger, weatherproofed catio.
Tell your neighbor to neuter their cat!
Thats hardware clothe not chicken wire
That Ikea piece won't last long outdoors. Think people, think!
Not big enough, my cat hates his it's to small. A cage is a cage.
Make it bigger then, add another bookshelf..
way too small
O please. That's far to small for a big cat ,, OK temp for kittens to keep em safe ,,, but plz make this a hek of a lot bigger if its a house cat ,,and fine for birds ,,, a cat noooooo ,but I do love the idea and cats love den,s and high up place,s . 😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
Sheila Butterworth Big cats live these - I had three on one smaller than this.
Sheila Butterworth The Cat has the whole house. This is just like a balcony for it to get some fresh air. It’s not kept in there.
This makes me sad. Poor cats not allowed out to really enjoy the outdoors. Yeah yeah... not everyone lives where cats can roam safely. Still sad. 😥
