    **. A small correction, that's not chicken wire, it's called hardware fabric or hardware cloth. Chicken wire has roundish holes in it that are bigger and lighter than this. What you used would actually protect your kitties from interlopers and predators even better than chicken wire. :)

    If you live in a buggy area, you could use aluminum or nylon screening, and you'd probably want to fill in the gaps between the bookcase frames and the side of your house. Great idea for apartment dwellers with balconies, too!

      Good idea, but use insect screening alongside the hardware fabric, but not instead of it, because screening won't stop any self-respecting cat from shredding and escaping. ;)

      Katma Tally As Mary Sanchez said above, use insect screening alongside the hardware fabric. I’ll add another reason why: COYOTES. Coyotes have been known to successfully tear through screening on porches to take cats; it’s not pretty.

  • @1catmac

    This is darling! I did same with one of those wire shelves. I would put real cat grass and cat mint in there. Also good to put potted wildflowers on outside to attract birds and butterflies. Would not hang string like that as they can get caught in or eat. I would get WOOL carpet remnants for shelves for them to sit on. And I would paint with Non-Toxic paint to preserve.
    Gotta also keep in mind - cats outside, even in cateos, are susceptible to cat viruses, etc. so confer with your vet what’s going around in your area in relation to vaccines. Cats are so happy to have these cateos, especially those that always want to go outside. This will keep them from bugging you .

    Danger! Do not suspend cat toys as shown. It is hazardous and may cause strangulation! 1:24 The two strings twist together before the cut. You do not want to hang your cat.

      I accidentally left the cat toy that have string and a toy attached to it thinking nothing bad would happen.. I went back in the afternoon and saw the string already strangling my cat's neck😭😭😭 thanked God nothing serious happened.. But I knew if I was late my cat could die.. I stopped putting the collar as well now

    • @MarySanchez-qk3hp
      @MarySanchez-qk3hp 4 года назад +2

      It's not chicken wire, it's called hardware cloth/hardware fabric. I wouldn't use real chicken wire, regardless of the hole diameters, for chickens because Cooper's hawks will stick their feet through the holes and mangle the chickens, and raccoons can do just as much damage, so can weasels and other predators. Hardware fabric is more predator-proof,for any beloved pets.

Thank God they made it in time.

    • @hughmb5131

      It def can happen. They make the mice that hang from doors with break away collar ends in the middle for that reason...im actually looking at one hanging from my door as i type this. Those pieces may be tough to come by unless u cannibalized ones from a collar, but expensive.
      When i build mine anything hanging will be attached with two pieces of string with very small magnets between. That way if they get stuck it will break away with ease.

  • @ice9594
    @ice9594 5 лет назад +6

    Always be sure to have a top on your catio or cats will climb out! The wire shown is hardware wire not chicken wire. Use hardware wire as it is much stronger. Also you can get pet flaps (doors) to fit most windows. Or use a piece of wood & insert a pet flap (much cheaper). You don’t want to leave the window open or close it & lock kitty out.
    Rather than cuteness stuff cats can’t use I hung a windchime at the top of my catio so they can enjoy the sound. You can also hang toys tied to the ends of elastic strings or long strips of fleece.😻

      missmayflower actually, indoor cats are BETTER off with another cat. They get very bored otherwise. Having another cat to interact with enriches their lives. Two females or a male/female pair (fixed, obviously) will usually get along. Two males are sometimes more difficult but if they’re neutered they shouldn’t be aggressive with each other.

      I'd imagine if you asked you could maybe add hardware "eyes" top and bottom for each side and put corresponding hooks on the catio and affix it that way, and have extruding boxed panel going along the top bottom and sides to fill the gap. It could be removed for maintenance or weatherproofing and updating and there'd be 4 pieces of hardware to remove and fill holes for instead of however many screw holes you'd need to affix it permanently like the video.

    Wish I had a window that opend to my balkony. I would so make this for my cat!
    But without the strings! I don't want my baby to hang itself while playing!! NEVER EVER leave your cat alone with strings like that. Specially not 2 at ones. IF you do want to hang a play thing. Use shorter string so the cat can't get tangled in it. Or use thicker and stiffer rope. I don't think a catio needs something like this tho. Its for airing and watching birdies and the occasional bug thats stupid enough to venture inside it. Play can be done indoors where there is enough room for silly jumps and running.

      I used 2x4 coated wire on mine so butterflies could come through. I have chicken wire on my other and no issue with cats, though you fo need to be watchful of coyotes - they can and will try

    You need to make it so that it won’t wobble on the dirt and grass. Add something to the wood so it’s water proof and all that fun jazz. It’s a pretty vague video so I suggest watching something else guys ^^

    If the fake grass is plastic, don't use. The top of the fake grass is sharp & uncomfortable. Also it will poke into eyes and paws.

    No chicken wire was used to build this. It's called rat wire or welded wire.

    Chicken wire has eye holes too small. THe gage should have been larger for the cats to see out, at least with one side of their face.
