- This video is about our cat enclosure that I built to keep our rescue cats safe while enjoying our outdoor area with us. Cat enclosures look harder to build than they actually are but even if you don't want to build your own catio then you can find pre-fabricated cat enclosures that you only need to connect to your house for entry.

What amazes me, is why "we" didn't think of catios sooner. The idea is just so brilliant and even a small space outside is a win-win for everyone. This one really is a paradise and totally stress-free for the humans. Where's the cat darling? He's in his catio. Wonderful.
You made a cat paradise and gave these little guys a wonderful home! I also live in an area where there's shootings all the time, in Chicago. I'm in the process of creating a safe outdoor place for my two rescue cats, as well. What you've done is a tremendous inspiration! Thank you so much for sharing! And for caring so much about cats!!

Love how u incorporated a lot of plants in and outside of the catio, if u want to make it even more discreet, plant some morning glory’s against the tunnels, they climb and they will attract lots of bugs, birds, bees and squirrels.

Aww that is wonderful. You have some very loved cats. I live in an apartment and have 2 cats. They demand to go out so I bought a cat stroller and we walk and let them play freely outside but I'm always right with them. We have huge hawks here.
Make them wear little blaze orange vests, too. LOL Great job.

This video is 5 years old, and I love to watch it again and again. Your cats are SOOOOO HAPPY!!!!! I get so excited to be able to watch the cats enjoy their lives like yours obviously do. Bless you.
I have 4 regular-sized catios, 4 window catios, and am in the process of building tunnels to connect them. I am also designing a very large catio with lots of enrichment so they may climb, jump, run, or just nap in a 24ft long X 10ft high space. I will say this. My 7 cats (all rescues) have a 4pm curfew, which means all the pet doors are closed, and until 4pm, they can run at large (they stay in my half acre backyard), but all except one, stay inside their catios with the doors wide open. They LOVE their catios so much, and choose to be in them. So, for anyone who complains about cats being in cages, etc, my cats prefer their catios over being loose in the yard, and have since I build them a year ago. Prior to having catios and window catios, they just hung out in the yard until 4pm. I have videos of this, if anyone wants to see them. They aren't edited or professional, etc, but just there for my family to go and view them. My cats run up and down their ramps, lie on the shelves, and sleep in their cuddle boxes.
Catos are THE BEST invention to not only keep our beloved babies safe, but also other wildlife as well. WIN WIN.

Thanks! Your babies are so cute, I just watched some of your videos. I made the mistake of taking my cats out on a leash and now that's all my Willy wants to do. But he still also likes his catio.
@@juliakonya7266 oh no, hahaha. You're in trouble now. I walk my dogs every day, most times twice, but I don't walk my cats. That would be hilarious tho. I used to have cats that walked my dogs with me (loose, not on a leash) but they crossed the rainbow bridge. I'm sure my current cats would love to walk with us. At least a couple anyway. They usually come with some trauma, but the ones that don't, would probably love to walk with us. Two of my rescues followed me home while I was walking my dogs, so they'd for sure probably like to. They were neighborhood drop-offs, ughhhhh. Nobody would claim them. In fact, my last 3 were neighborhood drop-offs, now that I think about it.
I'll put up more videos when I'm further along on my newest catios and tunnels. I built one in the last couple of weeks for my newest rescue (Ruby) because she's taking a bit longer to integrate with my other cats, and I don't think her window catio is enough for her to get exercise, and enjoy the outdoors. I put one into a tree that has a bunch of birds for some great cat tv for her to enjoy. She's going to love it. Her left ear is tipped, so she's a catch and release that somehow found her way into my neighborhood. Very skittish, but friendly. We live next to a wildlife preserve so we've got coyotes everywhere, mtn lions, bobcats, raccoons, hawks, owls, and everything in between. Have to be VERY careful, even with the dogs. Wayyyy too many predators.

@@energeticsoulhealer888 my Willy and his siblings were found at weeks old in our neighborhood and I raised them with a bottle. His siblings are with my husband's cousin. Willy is the one who loves to walk on the leash. We also have strays in the neighborhood. I TNRed them and was able to take one of them in. People love dumping cats where we live as well. Did you see the tutorial I have on how I built my tunnels?

I love this, and even where you say time to clean up some leaves, I think cats love to walk in leaves and grass and dirt (my cat even likes to roll in dirt). My cat can go outside but when we are away on vacation has to stay in. This could be a solution for him to go out unsupervised.

I've Been wanting to do this for my two cats. I don't have a fence nor shade around my house its about30-40 to the nearest tree or bush for shade. But for now, I can at least make an outdoor space and just us the darker color roof panels like yours over most of it. Actually, I want a space for me too to get out of the sun and bugs. I think I'll use screening on the outside of the wire fencing to keep the skeeters from getting in and then add some branches with platforms all around for the. The younger cat has always tried to get outside and she has made on a few occasions. She always bolts for a good run which she does inside that we call "she's got the zoomies". Perhaps I'll figure out a way for her to run out there.

Great catio - I'd love to be able to do that, but stupid condo rules don't allow it :-( Your calico - she is gorgeous! And, one of my cats looks just like Willy (except mine has a half moustache - lol - but, I won't tell her that.) :-) My other one is a Russian Blue. Cats are amazing animals, and yours sure have the life! Mine hang out in the windows looking out, wish I could have a catio for them.
oh no...yes stupid condo rules :( My calico passed away of old age at 18 years old. I miss her so much.

Try to build a small one 1st. If it comes out good or near good, add onto it.
That is exactly how I started too, or you can buy a larger kennel and just build a tunnel to enter it. That works too. I have some ideas in my blog post

0:27 They'd love it better if it allowed them to look over the top of the fence ! You could dill some spy holes through the fence ;)
Further improvements:
1. Complete the tunnels to make a complete circuit - this would give them an exercise journey - little point going to a dead end and then having to retrace one's steps.
2. Garden soil space for them to use as a toilet. Ideally 2 spaces - that you can dig over alternate months while the use the other one. They so much prefer going outside for that - although I knew one place where the cats would come in to pee !
Would it be too big a job to just put a mesh over the entire garden ?

I either use a pressure washer or just a shop vac to clean out debris

This is such an amazing catio. I have so much respect for you keeping your cats safe but still active and allowing them to feel the outdoors on their little bean toes! Also, cats need fresh air and sunshine. The sun gives them vitamins which they actually absorb through their fur! Amazing job. Hopefully one day my cats will have their own enclosure! (Right now mine are outside only with supervision!)
I feel the same way about my babies, I got 12 now, the best investment was to hired some body to built a kitty-run for my babies

Hi there! The fence isn't high all the way around the yard, especially on the hill. They can easily jump over the fence too or go under it in some areas.
Do you have an emergency door latches in the ramp to get the kitties out asap? I'm always nervous about not being able to get my babies in their carrier for emergency evacuation. I'm mostly worried about fire.
Yes, I'm worried about that too. I do have two emergency doors but not in the tunnels/ramps.
I wish I had the skills to build a catio like this for my Garfield. My neighbor lady threatened to poison my cat and so now I have to keep him inside and he is very unhappy :(
Oh no! People are so mean! Have you ever considered buying a chicken coop structure and placing it right against the house by a window that would open into the structure? It would work great for cats too.
@@juliakonya7266 Yeah, I've been looking at different options including cat proof fencing but I'm not sure how I want to proceed yet. My cat is an avid hunter and not just a sight-seer so I have to provide him with something that allows him more freedom of movement around the yard. I have trained him to walk around the yard while I have him on a leash but I can tell he hates it.
