  • Olivia Benson helps a child who allegedly has an unfit mother who is 'always stoned', after finding out that the child misbehaves in class due to a lack of attention at home.
Season 2, Episode 11 "Abuse": After the son of two popular singers dies by running into oncoming traffic, his mother (guest star Christine Andreas) claims that her son was fleeing from a child molester. But when forensics uncovers signs of emotional trauma in the boy, Detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler (Christopher Meloni) suspect that the hands-off approach to parenting employed by the two touring pop stars may have taken a fatal toll on their son --and may be responsible for their daughter Ashley's (guest star Hayden Panettiere) escalating self-destructive behavior as well.

I live abroad as a teacher. The rich parents who never really wanted a child in the first place are the absolute most heartbreaking things I’ve seen. The children are overly affectionate and desperate for recognition, and the parents don’t want to give it. They are the sweetest and often the most bright children in class.

Typical rich parents who just have kids for attention/fame etc. If that’s not a form of abuse I don’t know what is. Ashley just wants a parent who plays with them, takes them to school, cook them breakfast/lunch/dinner and JUST BASICALLY BE PARENTS. That’s what being parents are all about. Isn’t it? But Ricki here doesn’t give a hoot.

I work as an early childcare teacher I understand completely. It’s also the children who are there first thing in the morning and last to be picked up in the afternoon. But also yes the attention they don't get at home. I remember meeting a little girl once at my first job. She broke my heart my co-workers couldn't understand her behaviour. It took me just two days to realize that her parents were not giving her the time of day. Which just made me mad. I gave that little girl my full attention. Which made a difference with her and she felt more comfortable being around the other children. My co-workers also realized and saw the improvement in the little girl. By the time I left and moved back to my hometown. That little girl hated home time. The parents that don’t give there kids the time of day. Are the ones I don't interact with but will always the child my time to interact with them.

I am an Early Childhood Education teacher and this is sadly too familiar. I or probably any teacher could have written this same comment. So sad. I will never understand. I love all children. It kills me that I can't have children naturally. Hopefully one day I can adopt. But this stuff breaks my heart. This episode is so different from the rest. Not the usual criminal pursuit. But still so wrong. Tragic.

Believe it or not, Olivia is actually making the situation worse. The kid clearly needs help, and is willing to endanger herself to get the attention she craves. Olivia repeatedly going to areas where the kid could be is only rewarding her desire for attention. If it were me, I’d wage a press war against the parents. They won’t be able to do anything because all of it is true. Journalists won’t stop hounding because it’s a juicy story about a celebrity. At that point, evidence of neglect would come out eventually, and Ashley would have a far better chance of a better life.

Olivia's biggest flaw throughout Law and Order (and they actually explored the consequences of this in one episode) is that she gets tunnel vision and tends to not let things go. While this does make her a good detective in the SVU at the same time she can often push people and issues too far.

This was one of those episodes where Benson had good intention but bad execution. Unfortunately, this was in the early days of her learning curve on when to push and when to back off and reevaluate. While the girl does seek Benson out, Benson also seeks the mother out, and by proxy the girl, beyond what could be considered reasonable for a police officer. By doing so, she was feeding into the girl's attention seeking and rewarding the bad behavior, however understandable. Someone else in the comments said it perfectly. What Benson should have done was gotten the press involved. The mother wouldn't have any grounds to press libel charges so long as she gave strictly true information. At most, she would have gotten some 'time out' desk duty.

@ebayrose You're right. Whether you're drunk or high, you don't have cognitive function over your body the way you would if you were sober. So many people have been killed by DUI's, and only half of those were because of alcohol. Children need attention and care; way, way more than an addict needs their fix. Abusive and neglectful parents were all too common where I came from. People like them, and this woman, who chooses a sack of ground up trash and chemicals over their own child should not continue being parents.

The little boy was hit and killed by a car running after his computer teacher who turned out to be his father after he gave him up for adoption being so young. Then they see Ashley is hurting herself and being so clingy to Olivia i really hoped she would get a happy ending but that mother is so focused on her career, it’s a wonder why celebrities like her even have it considered children in the first place. I don’t know what was more heartbreaking at the end of the episode: the fact the mother went on to her tour in London leaving Ashley behind basically lying that she would be there for her, or when Ashley said she wasn’t Olivia’s friend anymore.
I wish there was an episode that would follow up with this but oh well.

emotional abuse can leave lasting scars that are unfixable, unlike physical scars that can eventually heal, (not always mind you but can be healed) emotional ones are with you for life. and it is true that emotional pain has been confirmed by scientists, to feel like actual injuries. so yes i want you to help a child who has wounds that are not on their body but in their body, in their minds and in their souls. emotional pain and suffering is abuse regardless of what people think.
