Addicted to jinjer and spiritbox lately. The vocals stand out but it's easy to miss just how amazing the instruments are! Such creativity and uniqueness.
Could not agree more, I have the same thing. And a lot of people react to it with comments like: "Oh why cuz it's two female fronted metalgroups? boring". No, It's because they are both very different bands, but to me it's very clear they are ahead of the pack sort of speak, both as musicians and lyrically. To me the overall most interesting is Jinjer, but I like spiritbox too. I like their latest release called 'Constance'.

You mentioned not really having listened to much metal music and I'd love to see you explore the genre and its subgenres. I think people who don't listen to metal on a regular basis would probably be really surprised and impressed with the amount of talent there is to find.
95% of metal bands are garbage loud noise and it gives the genre a bad name... the talented ones are so much more intense and interesting than any other music though, in my opinion
7:36 to 9:30 is the epitome of music appreciation.
So awesome to hear someone in the Band verbalize the importance of Vlad joining the Band. You can really hear and feel the difference in how the music is played and composed seen he joined. Just listen to difference in the studio version of Pisces compared to the live session, the song flows so much better. He was the missing piece. Thank you, can't wait for that conversation.
This whole video and song is about all the turmoil in the Ukraine. Sounds like from the perspective of innocent civilians.

Really really really enjoy seeing and hearing this guy react to jinger. Knowing this type of music previously wasn't his thing and now totally moved by it. Real musicians can get knocked off their feet by any genre when the song/band has the components we appreciate in respect to talent and creativity . I really like how he goes to the piano to translate the notes and chords while dropping some knowledge ...and just like piano isn't my thing - musicians respect and appreciate talent. So keep fingering those keys piano man, I'm loving it all.

Yes, I like this guy because he's a musician reacting with the understanding of technical and creative mastery instead of a genre that previously wasn't his cup of tea. I love it when I find a new gem that speaks to me so his reaction to jinger is genuine and why we are here. Subscribed and hit the bell, this dude is legit cool.

For me, 2020 was a great year for metal. I had been out of it for several years when I ran into Jinjer and got very strongly back into it.

Their debut album, Matriphagy is a concept album, and no one should read this is the first song on it. It has been named by several music reactors as the metal album of the year, and they have been called the breakout band of the year.
Their drummer, Max Portnoy is the Son of Mike Portnoy, who drummed for dream theater and avenged Sevenfold. Their vocalist, Justin, has a RUclips channel, Called Hungry lights, where he has placed four solo concept albums. He is an almost unbelievably good musician, and he has one of the most unique and craziest voices I've ever heard.
Would really like to see what you think of them.

Thank you for bringing up the connection with classical music. There is definitely a classical element to their music. It's not simple. It has a depth.
Loved the reaction. But holy hell I spent more time watching advertisements than i did watching jinjer.
Jinjer is Legend. They are so creative and all at such a high quality level. I played Bass and singing in a lot of Bands in the past and I am always amazed by the ideas and excellent arrangements of jinjer.
And I have to say that I always like you reactions. It is always nice to see how you feel the music and how you're in love with the music.

You didn't really touched onto the actual topic of the song, aside from the bands press statement about it. This song is specifically about the war in eastern Ukraine. Tatiana, Roman and Eugene are from that region, they decided to flee when the war started, leaving their families behind, in order to continue to make music. They eventually ended up residing in Kiev, but have been basically on tour ever since, just to make ends meet, right until covid came along - which is their longest pause without touring. If it weren't for Pisces going viral on reaction channels, vastly spreading the word and giving them a lot of exposure, then they'd probably be in a much tougher spot now.
But yes, Vlad really is the icing on the Jinjer cake. He's such a good fit, and I love his style of drumming. I guess it is also fair to say that Jinjer is typically atypical. Them experimenting and doing what they want to do is what makes them so unique. Not everyone likes that, but I think a lot of people see their appeal nowadays, especially those with a good understanding of music.
It's amazing to imagine one song saved their dreams and launched them into the stratosphere. Jinjer truly is a rare gem.

Vlad is the only other metal drummer who's impressed me on the same level as Mario Duplantier has.
You have one of the best reaction channels out there David! I love when you break down different chords and progressions and play with them on your keyboard. Really cool to hear those same chords in a different way, and kind of illustrates how universal music is even amongst completely different genres.
As others have said it is about their hometown being caught in the war in eastern Ukraine, and more broadly about the plight of civilians caught in every war, often forced to become refugees to escape the violence.
If you love The Who, you should check out The Hu. ;) They are Mongolian folk metal. Most famous for their song Wolf Totem. Yuve Yuve Yu is my favorite and they use drone footage to make an epic video that does for Mongolia what LOTR did for New Zeeland.

I loved the reaction and decomposition. Jinjer is also a new favorite of mine following your reactions. I’ve never been a fan of the “growl” style of singing but she really pulls it off in conjunction with her sweet balladic vocals. Love their Metal sound, it’s fresh for a genre I thought had already been played out, thanks for pointing out the time signature changes, my ear is not adept to the finer aspects of rhythm; I just know when I like it!

Your comments about riffy-ness really stood out to me. It made me think of all of my favourite big riffy headbangers like "Hail to the King" by Avenged Sevenfold, "Square Hammer" by Ghost, and "Drink" by Alestorm. Then you talked about jazz influences which makes me think of "Helter Skelter" by Shining and pretty much everything by Zeal and Ardor. So many branches from pirate metal to hard rock. Thanks for giving me an excuse to headbang all afternoon dude!!!

The part that plays at 7:00 minutes, reminds me of the part of a very famous Brazilian song of bossa nova, called Girl from Ipanema by Tom Jobim (Garota de Ipanema ). even more considering that Bossa Nova is called Brazilian Jazz by some musicians.
...my first concert in 76 at the miami baseball stadium was the who.....it was insane....but jinjer is now my favorite band of all time.....not exactly sure why...too many reasons....dig your metaphysical commentary....life is just one breath...pay attention to it.....this song is so personal to them it brings tears....that smooth section is straight up bossa nova...check "girl from ipanema"....nice licks on the keys cuz...agree with the vlad comment..they are complete....thanks...peace...

I believe that Eugene refers to the bands music as "extreme"...
He said it's not just rock or metal...its beyond that and they infuse many styles n genres of music.
I'll be honest here n confess that it goes way over my head. I can't count out the beats or fully understand chord structures w 7ths n 9ths... I'm a self taught rock/blues player ( pentatonic scales)...but at 58 yrs old I love these guys !

I can count it when it briefly changes to 4/4 time lol! It has that hard charging straightforward feel to it. Usually during the chorus or breakdown.

this song might be one of their most chaotic and dissonant songs... which says a lot for jinjer... and its so great at amplifying the lyrics/concept.
even the jazzy interlude is an amazing audio and visual metaphor for people trying to pretend everything is ok for a tiny slice of time in a warzone but of course it quickly falls apart.

JINJER are from Eastern Ukraine, Donetsk region. Their native town was and still remains occupied by pro-russin forces. And all the band members became war refugees and had to move to a different region (at first Lviv in Western Ukraine and later on Kyiv - the capital). This is a very personal song for them. Ok, after reading your comment here I went and checked them out, and I can only agree that David would like them and it would be fun to see him react to one or more or all of their songs. I was deeply impressed by them and listened to a good thirty minutes of videos and could have listened to more. They are so tight, so individually skilled, and their songs are catchy and very well composed. And Adrienne's vocal skills are definitely first rate. I could only become an instant fan. The appropriate response to their music seems to be excitement, joy and wonder.

After seeing the video of Vlad playing Rachmaninov, I have a better understanding of his drumming style.
He's playing the same style of music... but on the drums.
Jinjer is completely in a class/genre of their own. Nobody is doing what they can do. Everyone raves about Tatiana's vocals...which are phenomenal, but the rest of the band is a complete monster of it's own. Eugene, Vlad and Roman lay down some EXTREME music matched by very few others. Keep up the great work Jinjer and cant wait to hear what is coming next. Something ungodly I expect...having all this time off to write. Hope to see you soon in the NY area after all this covid crap passes! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I agree. Every song is so different yet distinctly Jinjer. When they incorporate other genres they do it with such skill - like the bossa nova in this song. They really are unique.

They are definitely a force to be reckoned with and unlike anything anyone has ever seen before...or after for that matter too! They're doing what nobody has done. Mixing and blending styles not metal, but making it their own and it's still metal...absolute genius!!!

Vlad isn't JUST a piano player. He's a classically trained pianist. He only started playing drums in the first place because his last band needed a drummer so he had to step up

Gotta check out Between The Buried and Me, their song Selkies (The endless obsession) would be a good place to start. They're very well known in the Progressive Metal scene. Based on what you said you like about Jinjer, I think you'd dig them!

How about the live Hellfest 2013 version of Where Dragons Dwell? I keep returning to that one for some reason - probably that 4 1/2 minutes of smashing ostinato backing the vocals at the end and Mario's insane drumming (although that is a feature of all their songs).

Absolutely, a great drummer can absolutely carry a great band. I agree, Vlad is doing this with Jinjer. That concept applies across a lot of music over time: Danny Carey with Tool, Neal Pert/Rush, Tony Williams/Miles Davis Quintet, Elvin Jones/John Coltrane Quartet, Papa Jo Jones/Count Basie Orchestra - the list is long. Of course I know a lot more of the jazz ones.
David, I usually love your reactions, but with this video/song, you seemed to be focused solely on the music portion of the song and not the heavy anti-war meaning of the lyrics and video. This video tore my heart out when I first saw it a few days ago and considering that the song was written regarding Russian intervention when it was confined to the Eastern part of Ukraine (where they are from), I can't imagine how they have felt since the brutal all out illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine ordered by the irrational war criminal, Vladimir Putin. It's a brilliantly written song with the harder metal guitar/bass riffs with the weird intervals that add tension, Tatiana alternating from clean, hopeful sounding vocals instantly into harsh vocals to emphasize her anger and then the very cool "jazz-ish" section, which seems to portray a feeling of innocence, transitioning instantly into the super heavy end section relating the brutality and loss of war (for everyone, except the insulated, power hungry politicians who start them).
#SPOILER: 4:57 sums Jinjer up so well. Great video!
