      agreed!!! I don't have a secondary car nor the time to do this type of work, although I do as much as I can myself.
      mainly just watching to make sure I get the correct parts and what not...local transmission shop said $400-$500 for labor
      . And I'm trying to do the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, rear main seal the whole 9 yards lol, would want OEM or better parts....I'm a huge believer in you get what you pay for.
      (Exclusions apply obviously ....) but do enough research and you'll be good 👍

    Way to go for attempting this at home. It’s one of the more difficult civics with the subframe. My one tip would be to use blue thread lock instead of red.

    Dude thanks so much for making this. My throwout bearing has been getting a little noisy for a few months now and I have been hesitant to attempt the project since there were no videos last time I checked a few months ago. Just found this and its like its sent from god! So thorough I don't even think I will have to open a book. Absolutely grateful. Please keep making videos for this car as surely alot of them are approaching the age/mileage where things start to fail. Cheers!

    Some additions to the video. As always, having an extra set of hands helps: 3:48, Battery Tray Bottom Bolts Steve talks about: Person one, get under the bumper (if you get under there and look for them, they'll stare you right in the face) and tie onto the bolt(s) with a socket and 6" extension, go with half inch socket for leverage. Don't really need 1/2" but there's plenty of room for one. Person two, drop 1/2" ratchet down and let person one lock you in. Crack those loose a bit with a pipe/make shift breaker bar on the ratchet since it won't be poking up much. 8:07: Definitely 2nd the tying off to the strut suggestion. Using the same tow straps (ratchet straps worked great for us here in CHI and seem ideal for the job). Much less work, less complicated, and 100% out of the way for the meat of this job. 9:59: There is a rubber wrap around the steering linkage you can see under the bracket with the 14's. Keep an eye on this when reassembling. It needs to be lined up with the bolt holes on the money or you won't be able to get the bracket back on. When you get the subframe back up, don't lock it all in anymore than you need to until you've confirmed this is lined up. We had some shiftage during the whole process and ended up having to pull back out the lateral subframe bolts and loosen the main 4 17mm subframe bolts just to be able to scoot that rubber wrap over a half inch. If you tighten everything up and this is misaligned, it won't budge. 12:17: Drivers side swivel bracket. If you have 1/2" wobbler (universal?) sockets, you can come in from the top with a couple long 1/2" extensions. Get someone down below to hold the socket on while tying in the extensions and torqueing. You will be able to get close enough to vertical to crack both those loose. I did not quite understand the process for these in the video but coming in from the top seemed easier if you have the socket for that method.

    Not a bad video, adjustable wrench is nuts, transmission floor jack is great for adjusting the transmissions angle when removing and installing. I always used big zip ties to hold back hoses, spindles and other things for clearance. A strut tower engine support works so well to support a engine. Overall great video, u did alot of tooling, meaning you used alot of handtools. I remember those days.

    Another thing I want to note is that you are calling a regular wrench a crescent wrench. That will confuse novice diyers. Your guide is amazing and the best guide for this I have seen, but a regular open end/box end wrench is not a crescent wrench.

    Great video DIY Dude! Excellent job doing all that work! Just one thing I would suggest is when removing the pressure plate bolts in that criss cross pattern, just back them out a couple of turns each as you make your way around the plate a few times until they are removed, so that the last couple of bolts are not under undue stress. Same when reinstalling, go a few turns each and make your way around in the criss cross pattern until they are all tightened to specs. :)

    This video has been awesome. I think I made a little mistake though... I got the subframe off and crawled underneath and I see a splined shaft just hanging out in a hole and I can see the underside of my dash through it. Is something supposed to hold that shaft into the sleeve that comes right off the back of my steering wheel?

    • @steveDIY
      @steveDIY  4 года назад

      Mike Clement hey bud, sounds like your steering shaft came out. You need to make sure your steering wheel is as straight as possible when you put it back in. You will more than likely have to get an alignment once you are done. The steering rack comes off when you don’t support it good enough with straps. I did the same thing.

    While you’re there drop a k20 in it...I mean your halfway there! What happened to the easy to fix Honda’s

    • @asmongoldsmouth9839
      @asmongoldsmouth9839 3 года назад

      The 8th gen and up made fixing a Honda more complicated. They wanted to compact the components more and more. The extreme slant of the windshield, longer dash caused a push out on the firewall and made the engine bay a 2nd priority in engineering. With that, follows access to everything else.
      Look under the hood on a 7th gen, then an 8th, 9th or 10th gen civic. It is astounding the direction the design team took. 7th gen and all generations previous to it are awesome to work on. But in the end of the day, a Civic is a Civic. It will last you forever if you take care of it.

      If your transmission doesn’t seem to be giving you issues i would think you are fine, to just replace all clutch related parts you mentioned. but if you are already pulling out the transmission and want peace of mind you can buy a used one with less miles and replaces it all and get another 200k if your motor is in good shape

    Do NOT use regular chrome sockets and extensions with an impact gun. It is possible for them to shatter, and that would be a real bad day for you if any part of your body is nearby when it happens.

    So, if a guy doesn't have any of these tools I'd say it's cheaper to let a mechanic do it. Just for perspective, a good torque wrench costs $100 + alone. That doesn't count any tool sets he needs to buy, jack, jack stands, or any other specialty items associated with changing a clutch. I do all my own work, but when you factor in a guy who has none of the tools required, it's better for a mechanic to do it and when a mechanic does it the customer gets a specific warranty on the work, whether it is 1 month or 25,000 miles. So for all the guys in the comments with 0 tools for this, have a Mechanic do it. In the end it will be cheaper and less frustrating on you.

    • @steveDIY
      @steveDIY  4 года назад
