How to remove a transmission in a 2006 Honda Civic, 8th Gen Engine R18A1. This is not a cheap fix to have done at a shop. So if you have some hours you can set aside and put in the elbow grease and you can save yourself $$$! Lets put away our wallets and bust out those tools because we are doing it ourselves!

Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. Just got done with an automatic transmission rebuild on my 2009 civic, and im not a professional whatsoever. It was pretty nerve-racking but doable, it took me about a week for the rebuild. Bought a rebuild kit with all of the seals, o rings, and auto clutch plates for like 300 bucks on ebay. But I ended up having to drop the transmission a 2nd time to change the torque converter. Usually, when an automatic transmission goes bad, the torque converter goes bad with it, dont make my same mistake. The torque converter was $250, and my car is shifting like a dream now.
Well done! Way to get it done 🙌🏻 I feel you on that torque converter. I redid my truck tranny and when I put the “new” torque converter in it was actually bad :( I dropped the tranny 3 times trying to find the issue.
I was taking my tool box 🧰 outside to remove my transmission but after watching this video I put it back inside my 🏠 your video intimidated me.

Outstanding video and mechanical work. Thanks for doing such a in depth video with your corrections and additional tips and comments via your text messages. The problems you had to overcome were frustrating, but you had a great positive attitude and a lovely observer for safety. I'm an old guy who had to work alone most of the time and self rescue and do my own first aide if I got injured when working. One tip for you, WD 40 is a good cleaning agent but for a few cents more ACF-50 works better for dealing with corrosion and sold most places you find WD-40 sold. And for Penetrating fluid most people recommend using "Kano Aerokroil" Penetrating Oil very expensive but worth it

For removing electrical clips I slide a 6mm socket over the squeezable side and then just push them through.

I have a 2008 civic 1.8L 5-speed and she won’t shift into 5th or reverse and is clunky in neutral. I found out it wasn’t the linkage and I’ve decided to just do a tranny swap, thank you so much for this video or it would’ve taken me days to figure it all out!

Nice video very detailed appreciate that but now I'm having second thoughts about doing mine here in Minnesota after 15 years of salted winter roads the rusted bolts would probably take me a two weeks to get the subframe off...

Nice vid. Got a donor car coming to me and it will be the guinea pig for my transmission swap. My car has bad input shaft bearings.
As I battle through this myself, a couple of things I have found:
1. To get the airbox out, it is a lot easier if you remove the ECM (3 bolts and unclip from wiring harness). This also allows easier acces to the transmission mount bolts later.
2. Before getting to the subframe, remove the axles. This give a lot better access to the subframe bolts. I removed the entire knuckle on the drivers side (since the lower ball joint is already coming off, it is only 2 additional bolts connecting to the strut and the 1 nut to the tie-rod end)
3. There are a shit ton (possibly a metric shit ton) of plugs/sensors on an auto trans- they are hard to see and easy to miss!
4. Depending on the condition of the bolts- it my be beneficial to remove the short exhaust section that runs from the CAT to the long straight section.
I will say that I do have the benefit of time- so I have been working on this a couple of hours at a time- so if you're in a rush it would be a trade off on how much you disassemble.
PS- I can't imagine doing this for a clutch job! I'm working on an 06 with an auto with 290,xxx miles!

Amazing video perfectly detailed. Because of this, yep time for a new vehicle…if this was an EK civic I’d have this done in 30 minutes but with rust removing a subframe could be an 8 hour job no thanks
it's best to actually just drop the steering rack while you drop the subframe, you just disconnect the bolt under the column and the hoses going to the rack and use a vacuum pump to suck out the ps fluid in the reservoir and let the remaining fluid drain into a jug when you disconnect the hoses...you could even swap out the rack with a $150 bbb reman from rock auto if you got a clunk in the column when gently turning the steering wheel right to left

At 26:00 "not an ideal way to take a tranny out" my brother and I did this the same thing with a jack in our f150. It was literally the worst because after all that we used the same method to put it back and with two people its a pain. Great videos !!

I don’t see why not. Just make sure you have the car supported from both sides with a jack on one side and a jack stand or wood blocks or something sturdy on the other

The transmission lasted 510,000 miles with occasional fluid changes.
its been a hot minute since I made this video lol, cant give you a good answer on that sorry. it seemed like the best way at the time to do it from the research I was able to find. There were really no other videos to glean from when I did this job, so a lot of it was learning while doing it and it probably could've been more efficient if I had done it before.

Did you take those three bolts off first? You might need a pry bar to help get it off. I’d use a rubber mallet and give it some good whacks.
Stick a prybar from underneath and pry on it but at the same time get a flathead screwdriver and pry from the top, the locking pin will move and free the axle. I was fighting mine for a couple hours but once I tried that got it first try
can't u just replace the torque converter seal while it's still inside the car ?
Hi Steve; so I had to drop the transmission to replace the engine in my son's 2007 Civic. Problem is, now the clutch won't engage when engine is on. I can shift through the gears when it's not running, (At least I think it's shifting into gear?) but when it's running it just kills the engine. Any thoughts out suggestions would be appreciated! BTW, GREAT VIDEO!!! THANK YOU!!!

The Trick is making sure you label stuff and keep it organized, it will take a little longer but it takes the stress out of it!

I was changing out the clutch, transmission was fine 🤙🏻. You have to remove the transmission to get to the clutch

DIY Dude no I just have a whining noise. I think it’s the alternator or a belt pulley
@@soupdancer17 normally its the tensioner bearing, you can replace just the bearing, you'll need a t50 torx socket to take off the tensioner assembly and to take off the bearing
john joseph it just ended up being my power steering fluid being old as hell
DIY Dude, how long did this entire job take you to remove and why were you removing it? I'm looking at buying an 06 EX that from what I can tell has an Input Shaft Bearing that is (has) gone out. I'm troubleshooting that from what I've read on forums and others findings.
Hey Chris, it was my first time and I didn’t have a solid guide to go off so it took about a day to figure it all out. You can get the tranny out in 4-5 hours or faster if you follow the video. I was changing the clutch in the car. Best of luck bud, they are good cars. Side note If your that deep into it I would replace the clutch while you are in there, I have a video on my channel for that as well.

I would search Ebay for a transmission for your year civic and most of the time they will say on the listing what year and model the transmission will fit. I believe though that most 8th gen civics have the same transmissions the k-series.
Its gen 8 it should be good. But if you don't even know what gen your civic is, you're going to have a real effed up time changing out transmissions.

Absolutely great video man! Quick question, couldn't you just remove the one screws on the steering rack swivels that secure them to the subframe? As in, just leave the swivels attached to the rack when you lower the frame.

Check engine light came on threw code P0780 , says it could be low tranny fluid but fluid levels are normal , it says it could also be the solenoids but I’m yet to find the exact location of the solenoids , can’t find it on any forums or any RUclips video , it’s a 08 Honda Civic hybrid let me know thanks!!

Awesome information but I don’t think it solved my problem, My trans seems to be leaking fluid from what looks like the black bracket shown at 20:04 it’s missing a couple of bolts there and it looks to be leaking along the ridge where it connects to the trans is it possible to be leaking from here?
Did you replace your rear main seal at the same tome??
Yeah replaced rear main that was the problem, it ruined my clutch had to rebuild as well oil got on and gears started slipping

I did everything until minute 25.30. I took two 17mm on the top of the transmission and 4(including by the side of the starter) on the bottom, and also 4 17mm braket bolts on the side. Still the transmission is holding on to the engine like a rock. I'm really cofused right now. Please help.
Shann Yatigala did you take the bracket off? I would re watch it and make sure you didn’t miss a bolt, it shouldn’t be stuck on there to hard!
@@steveDIY no i did not, but now the bracket itself has no contacts to the transmission anymore. I'll rewatch it and give it a try tomorrow morning. Btw it really feels like there's still a bolt on. Thanks for replying tho.

@@Ta-s197 I did and fixed everything back together thanks to this video. The transmission is stuck to the engine due to constant heat and cold for a long time. In the video @ 20.08, he removes a bracket that has 3 10mm bolts. After you remove it, you'll see a gap between the engine and the transmission. Try to find a expanding clamps that fits the gap and try to get some room around the transmission. By gradually using pry bar you should be able to get the transmission off. Good luck

stop using wd40 and pick up some penetrating lubricant like PB Blaster...also you keep referring to box wrenches as crescent wrenches...crescent wrenches are adjustable wrenches
