  • How do you do the Pilates lateral breathing and achieve perfect alignment in your body?
With every group class I teach, I always start with reminding members how to align themselves in neutral and we concentrate on the lateral breathing technique.
Why? Because the power of Pilates really is in the technique, the lateral breathing and the engagement.
It's important to start your workout without bad posture. Watch this video to get your body in the correct, neutral position and alignment to make your workout more effective.
Lateral Pilates breathing helps to keep your core stable and active whilst exercising. It's the fuel for your movement!

Hi Kim. I am a brand new Pilates instructor. I am peeping to start teaching in a few days. I feel so overwhelmed. This video is amazing and simple. I have subscribed to your channel.

Hi Kim - good luck! Being a new teacher is daunting for sure and I remember my first classes very well - I used to be so nervous!! But the love for exercise and getting your students to become fitter and healthier will help you to overcome this. I also promise you that you will find your own teaching style - you'll discover what your students respond well too and what doesn't work...
      I'm excited for you! xx

Hi Sarah. Beautifully clear explanation. I have a question for you. It's my experience that lateral or thoracic breathing is the natural result of strong and engaged muscles of the inner and outer abs. In other words, lateral breathing need not be taught - it comes naturally as we continue to practice Pilates. Thanks for this wonderful video.

Hi Bob - thank you for your kind feedback. I totally agree with you that once you have the hang of it, thoracic breathing becomes natural. I can't breathe any other way now. I've also found that my core is always slightly engaged now - another great side effect of doing Pilates! Are you an instructor too?

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I've been teaching and practicing Pilates for 40 years, primarily the mat routine. And I was truly astonished by your clear and simple instruction which I rarely hear in the Pilates world. Do you teach breathing to a beginner? I've been struck more and more by how complicated Pilates instruction often is and I just think it doesn't have to be that way especially for beginners, so I don't talk to beginners about correct breathing or alignment, anything that would muddy the waters and make it any more difficult that it already is! Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Oh gosh, 40 years - you must be amazing!! I do teach breathing to beginners and let them focus on TA engagement, whilst I still talk about PF engagement, I always tell beginners that if they feel it's too much to think about, to not think about the pelvic floor for now, but think about lateral breathing and engaging the Transversus Abdominis. My experience is that beginners find the breathing hard at first, but within four classes they have mastered the lateral breathing and TA engagement. Sometimes they need a reminder during the more challenging exercises but that's what I'm there for. I feel Pilates only really works if you get the right core engagement so I do throw my beginners in the deep-end - bless them! Most of them come back though so that's a good sign... some people get frustrated they can't do the breathing straightaway, but I tell them to not worry; people always get it after a while... a bit of patience and just enjoying the challenge is key to getting the most out of Pilates I think. What do you feel works well in your classes? You have lots of experience - would love to here your tips... xx
