First there was Meshuggah, then there was Periphery. Theres other gems like Tesseract, but when it comes to pure djent in the filthiest of forms, nobody does it better than Periphery and Meshuggah
I like that the chorus in Wildfire follows a similar kind of sound/progression as the Jazz break. I love when repeat listens of a song help me to discover fun little details each time.
There's also two riffs in Zagreus from Four Lights, as well as lyrics repeated from Juggernaut songs in both songs (Kill them slow/kill me slowly, hell below, searching for something beyond...)
Holy shit dude I've been SLEEPING on Periphery. Last I heard from them has to be almost a decade ago at this point and at the time it didn't jive well with my ears. These tracks are just so next level though, I'm blown away.
Ahhhh these songs are so good! Periphery’s ability to get better with every record simply astounds me. The added jazz break in Wildfire and the cinematic orchestral stuff on Zagreus were such nice touches on songs that were already absolute bangers. Periphery V is for sure at the top of my most anticipated albums of the year now. Great video Rachelle!
Finally checking these out! Really loved Wildfire. The heaviness and the unpredictability was really cool! As you know, not a big fan of prog but Periphery is one of the main exceptions! Also really liked Zagreus and l did enjoy that cinematic outro! I actually remember your Periphery video way back and recommending you check out Reptile, which you did immediately and reported back that you loved it! It's still my favourite so far! Not sure if I had Periphery in my predicted top 10 AOTY list but if not they're on it now!
So stoked for this album, these songs has me pumped! Needed this kind of prime prog, with Spencer and the boys in perfect form by the sound of it! PUMPED!
Yeah I also really got into them during hail Stan. Once I heard Reptile I was hooked and went back through their music. I was kinda into them back in 2011 when they were just doing effects demos and stuff and I didn't realize what they had become.
So, on first listen, I wasn't crazy about either of these songs. I think I must've been in the wrong headspace or something because on revisiting them, I'm friggin blown away. Wildfire is definitely my favorite of the two, those vocal melodies are so.. unusual, but they work really well. Zagreus i liked a little less but i'm still super keen on it. I'm definitely going to be revisiting them a lot in the future. I feel like I'm at a damn party lol. Periph is probably my fave band, so I'm always stoked for a new release, even if the songs don't catch me at first, I end up loving em later. Question for the commenters here, which outros motifs do you think we'll be seeing elsewhere on the album? Or both? Great vid as always. I'm super stoked.
Love both singles. Been waiting for these and the preorders. Almost missed out on the vinyl!, only 1 variant is left but I grabbed one. His voice just keeps getting better. Great reaction.🤟
I love the reference to the "four lights" off of alpha and omega in "zagreus" shit is so fire and such a nostalgic throwback part of the song, I think they're intentionally reusing melodies from older albums, shit gives me chills and such a good nostalgic feeling to these new tracks. Another absolute banger of an album is coming from the periphery bois again no doubt 😁
They are intentionally throwing back to older songs. If you like stuff like that, check out Coheed and Cambria. They have a bunch of callbacks to riffs all over the place.
Found your channel from that podcast you did with Metalbirb. Awesome job on the video. Liked your comments at the end as well. Much respect to you peace.
So BOTH songs gave nods to Juggernaut; Wildfire used the main melody from The Event, while Zagreus used the melody from Four Lights, which of course is both instrumental songs on there. There are also a few lyrics they pay homage to/use from Juggernaut as well, so while you were right about Zagreus giving a nod to old stuff Wildfire did as well!
@@RachelleReacts I've been a fan of Periphery for about 10 years or so now so I've pretty much already listened to almost all their albums to death by now so I pretty much realized those right away lmao
There are many more references in Wildfire than I realized lol it's usually just a variation of riffs from those same songs but there's some stuff dating back to Mile Zero in there. I feel like this album might end up being a continuation of Juggernaut but that's just me lol.
@@Seidragon Yeah come to think of it the little piano jazz part reminds me a little of the end of MK Ultra; might be reaching there but made me think of it lol
@@RachelleReacts I don't have specific songs by them but songs from their most recent album have some crazy sax parts if you're interested in hearing their music
theres also a track called "Atropos", which is the planet where "Returnal" on PS5 takes place, on the new album. they where probably gaming quite some time over the years
Hey Rachelle. I seen you’re a big fan of Great grief by Casey. I’ve just got back from their gig in Manchester UK. I recorded the full song, do you have anywhere I can send it to if you’d like to see it?
wildfire didn't do it for me. zagreus was a lot better. maybe its me but I really like the shoe gaze poppy songs from periphery. songs that even with the technical stuff still rings in my head. but to me these songs doesn't do that for me unfortunately. lets see what the album will bring.
I've been saying it for years, I love Periphery musically but, Spencer's vocals hold them back. Not that he isn't a good singer but, nothing he sings is interesting or catchy at all. Their first album was great but, that's because most of the lyrics and melodies were written by the other singers that were in the band before him. Nothing has compared since.
i liked chris a lot, spencers grown on me, specially with hail stan. selfishly almost wish they went full heavy and got somebody more aggressive but i've grown to like spencer
Periphery is such an S tier band in the scene! Wildly underrated, too.
one of the most successful bands in the scene. I wouldnt say underrated. They are more SS tier.
Couldn't agree more.
First there was Meshuggah, then there was Periphery. Theres other gems like Tesseract, but when it comes to pure djent in the filthiest of forms, nobody does it better than Periphery and Meshuggah
@@TheKevinthec and kadinja. It just sucks they don’t release more music.
Sounds like you’re the one “underrating” them. It’s an odd thing to say about such a successful band.

Listen to their song The Event 😉
Same chord progression as The Event, Wildfire's also from the perspective of the protagonist from the Juggernaut albums
The Hades reference in Zagreus is superb
When i heard it first i was almost hoping for a twist in the style of hades soundtrack :D maybe we get more, who knows
Holcomb said the last 4 chords or so to the song are what you hear when you die in the game hades.
I can safely say that Periphery is my favorite band
Somos 2 😊
@@victorarias6046 Somos 3
I found this really cool. The chorus in Wildfire is a remagining of an old instrumental track from their album Juggernaut called The Event
There's also two riffs in Zagreus from Four Lights, as well as lyrics repeated from Juggernaut songs in both songs (Kill them slow/kill me slowly, hell below, searching for something beyond...)
This is musicianship at it’s core.
I have the same feelings for Periphery as I did for Between the Buried and Me when I was a teenager. The musicianship is straight up ridiculous!
That hook in Zegreus is fire. I don't buy many albums these days, but this will be a day one for me.

Crazy how Sleep Token hit us with some crazy stuff now these guy's hit us with something even better what a great start of 2023 lol.
what a killer start to the year!!

My God, Periphery on the top of their game, so damn good, and glad you listened to the orchestral outro, so damn good 😊

They are all beasts on their instruments but man Spencer is just in a league of his own as a vocalist.
He is unfathomably good.
Justin from Tallah reminds me of Spencer. Check him out if you’ve never heard

Never thought I’d hear “The Event” in this context. God I love when they reuse old ideas in new ways. The motifs and Easter eggs are too much 🙌🙌

I am convinced they designed Wildfire to maximize the WTF factor for reactors. The thumbnails write themselves. If the strategy works, great for them!
nice catch about the orchestral part of wildfire - most likely gonna lead into the next song on the album
