I'm between the Go 10.3 and all of the SuperNote line. Can't wait to see how the A5X2 shapes up
Small tip as an owner of Go 10.3 , i think if you plan on reading a lot go with Boox, it has so many options and flexibility for reading and writing but if you don't plan on reading a lot the Supernote is apparently the better choice, i don't have exprience using the Supernote this is just based on my 2 month of research before buying my first device, good luck
Me too. Are you waiting for the A5X2? The Go 10.3 is number 1 currently though as we see here.
the Go 10.3 almost had me, but the lack of SDCard is a deal killer.
@@nathanaelcard why not supernote nomad if you are only looking for b&w?
@@HeathenPrim3 agree, for that exact reason i'm considering a Note Air 3 (or 3C)
Great to see your updated top 10! This breakdown of features and use-cases was very informative, and also helped with my fomo after deciding on the Boox Go 10.3 about a month and a half ago. Your videos and coverage helped me make an informed choice without blowing smoke. I was left to make my own decision by weighing the pros and cons and really thinking about what I want it to do. I decided on the Boox Go 10.3 and it really impresses me every time I use it. Great to see it make #1 for your current list! It really does feel great to use and the features are all hitting for my use cases.
Keep up the great work and excellent coverage of all things e-Ink!
As an aside, I really hope they are able to update firmware to resolve the frequency of “too many strokes” errors when writing and switching between full pages of cursive text.
Interesting, I've had my RPP for a few days now and been using it pretty heavily. I'm not seeing the yellow staining that's clear on yours. Maybe other reviewers have similar experiences to mine so not noting it much? I ordered the RPP early and after watching extensive negative reviews until I got it, I had serious buyer's remorse. I'm glad I gave it a chance, it's perfect for my use case and a keeper. Important to me, it has encryption which few reviewers are discussing.
I hope that in future we see something similar to the 10.3 but with a glow-light.
I'd love that
China just released a Go 10.3 color with a front light
@@TrinityGracePraises really, where did you see that?
G'day Kit, Thank you very much for this very thorough review. Pros and Cons of a large number of devices, so that e Ink "enthusiasts" can make an informed decision. Thanks again, Al.
Thanks for this video! That finally gave me the information that I needed.. Obviously I didn't watch the entire, just the final 10 minutes or so where you sum things up.
Yes, Boox 10.3 Go! Looks like a great device! It helps that I already own a boox device for reading and note taking, and I can say one important thing about it: Onyx does still (after approx. 3 years) send firmware updates. And all of these updates have been:
a) real improvements, in the sense of improving the idea of digital paper and not just creating another device for media consumption,
b) necessary! I can now sync my prospective new device to my old device. Without the updates that wouldn't work.
There are still things that I miss, as the digital device is still not compatible with my way of bullet journaling, which I perfected over the years.
Thank you very much for validating my purchases. My current 2 favourite devices are the Tab-X and Note Air 3 C. I too would very much love an updated 13.3" Tab-X in Kaleido 3 at 300/150ppi.
The Boox note air 3 is a fantastic device. I’m loving it
The idea of doing a rating of options for different professions is interesting. I know a few CPA firms have started giving their staff Remarkables for client tax notes, and those staff I've talked to have been thrilled.
I'm the financial controller at a large nonprofit with v. complex accounting, huge piles of legal pads with all my notes, read and mark up PDFs for compliance requirements etc. Also do a bit of art and a lot of reading in my spare time. I've been watching your videos for a bit to decide on a e-ink tablet to try upgrading from my legal pads, finally purchased a Table Ultra C Pro today (through your referral link ofc.) I'm a bit nervous about the smaller size compared to my beloved yellow pads but I think the color will be worth it to me. Decided not to do the Remarkable Pro because I want to shoot files to/from Office365 and Google Drive easily. I'll report back! :)
Do be careful of security concerns
I'm a game designer / creative and search for a e-ink tablet since now 3 months. I have serious look on the A5X2 for the way you can navigate through index, header, links... it has serious arguments since it emulates mind maps and the way my brain works. However, in France (and EU) the Ratta products are very very expensive (592€ for an A6X2 with normal folio and the HoM pen !). I'm waiting to see how the A5X2 will behave but the Boox Go seems to be the 'go' option to me for the price and navigate option it has. The downside for this device is the 'latency' and writing feeling which seems to be less appealing than Supernote.
@@luigi3880 yes also on my scope, but not enough 'public' feedbacks on this product right now. The AI stuff does not really interest me, but the price is competitive.
I read Kindle filed with the FCC for two new Kindle's. One might be a color Scribe. Hoping you plan to review that as well?
@@mikec5992 yeah, I'll get those in and review them for sure. 🙂
what do you think about Pocketbook InkPad Eo and Pocketbook Color Note? and is there any other color e-ink tablets with gallery 3 ink?
I like the Boox Note Air 3C, but for me, it’s not the best device for note-taking. The battery life is relatively short, and I find it slower than my Remarkable 2, even for simple tasks like unlocking. When working with colored sketches and layers, they load more slowly, and the same drawings perform faster on the Remarkable. I bought the Note Air 3C because I liked the idea of browsing the web, and it’s great for that. However, when it comes to note-taking and document reading, I find it too distracting due to the many features I don’t really need. For this reason, I’ve ordered the RM Paper Pro and sold my RM2, as I’m curious about its color representation and improved performance (the 100-day trial convinced me to try it). Ideally, the perfect device for me would be a Remarkable with web browsing capabilities-perhaps the new SuperNote might fit the bill, though it lacks color.
I bought a BOOX GO 10.3 and I love it. I brought it with me on a business trip. I also brought my Dell laptop, Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 tablet, and my Samsung Galaxy cell phone. I was able to connect my cell phone, tablet and laptop to the hotel Wi-Fi no problem. I could not get the BOOX GO 10.3 to connect. I keep getting a message on the screen that says "Network or server error, try later." Have you had any problems connecting your BOOX devices to a Wi-Fi network at a hotel?
The news about Boox releasing a BSR 2.0 device is exciting. Sadly, it's only on the T10C china-exclusive model. It's probably a nice hint for their upcoming devices.
Please make the bsr an option to toggle 🤞
I have been using Remarkable 2 for years and after the release of paperpro i was annoyed they didn't add more functionality when it comes to reading different types of documents. I just got a Boox Note Air 3c and its a whole different ballpark.
I hope to get mine in a week or so. Really looking forward to trying it.
The customer support becomes a hinderance for purchase, in case something goes wrong or are stuck.
Do you prefer the NA3C?
Note Air 3C - rMPPP - Nomad - Go 10.3 are kings I think. And I believe that the a5x2 will be in this list. Oh...and team up one of this devices with a laptop or an iPad (either of these 2 are still necessary) as well with a good eReader (Kindle, Go or whatever).
I don't disagree at all, looking at this list, I think maybe I put the A6X2 a little too low down. But I think in a pure ranking of "best" probably the size of the Viwoods and the Bigme trumps it a little. Thoughts?
@@luigi3880 Especially for leisure and regular books, there is nothing like an e-reader (weight, grip, UX, screen size, among others). Except with the NA3C and the 10.3 where reading for pleasure is good although not ideal, in the rest of the devices mentioned it is appreciated that they offer you the option to download the Kindle APP or through ePub, but it is not the primary function by any means. But hey...maybe you actually prefer to read with only one of these devices... every person is different, and that's cool.
I missed something-which device is Kit using in this review?
@@ronsiegel1084 the one on setting out the top ten is the remarkable paper Pro.
When you own so many, which one do you use on a daily basis? do you choose like one per day :)
I'm just generally using whichever I am testing at that point. I default back to tab Ultra C Pro if nothing is new, but I also just carry on with whatever I was using if it is good enough for my workflow, which they generally are.
The only ones I've ever tested that I've actively stopped using were the Kobo Elipsa (first one,) and the Lenovo smart paper. Neither if them were good enough. I suppose early on scribe wasn't good enough, but they added essential features in updates, and also early Bigme devices were very flawed, but actually I ended up finding them acceptable once I'd learned the quirks.
Good question!
@@KitBetts-Masters thanks for the reply..
Regarding stylus ranking, is there anything new or the one you did last year still stands?
I'm looking for a pdf and other formats ebook reader, with good battery life. Taking note isn't my priority. Which one should I choose?
Wonderful stream, and appreciate the feedback and input from the crowd as well. I have yet to pull the trigger on an e-ink device. Kit you hit it on the head right there at the end in regards to Apple and iPads I am deep into the Apple ecosystem and utilize a MacBook Air as well as an iPad for presentations. The allure of an e-ink device to give me a break from Apple, to concentrate, take notes, write down my brain dumps etc. is very appealing. While being deep into Apple, I am of the hybrid using a combination of Apple/Google suite of tools, but then through work it is all about Microsoft. I welcome the thoughts and opinions from you all who might lend some insight and thoughts from your experiences discovering your use cases. Cheers
Bought a Go 10.3 last week and I absolutely love it. Tried the Remarkable first, but that was too much of a notepad. Sold it and bought a Kindle Scribe, but that was too much of an e-reader. For me, the Go does both and does both really well.
@@davidhsharpe Sorry, I removed my comment. Have a great day! :)
still happy with the supernote A5X :-)
I purchased the Boox Go 10.3 yesterday and I'm glad it is a top choice. I can't fault it if you just want it to replace paper for note taking. I'll need a case since mine didn't come with one. Also, the device color is grey not white 😂, matches my surface pro. Can't wait to use it at some point underneath a Document Camera to teach Physics!
Let us know how it goes!
Bought a NA3C this year and the only complain I have is the dark screen. In good lighting the device is FENOMENTAL, but whenever i dont have optimal lighting it looks like garbage. The frontlike makes the rgb filter visible, so it looks like a 144p screen.
I would love to have waited and bought a RMPP, it seems to solve that and i really dont care about having android
Just got the Ultra Pro C and love it. I teach 5th graders online and needed something better to take meeting notes with parents and get my eyes off the “screen”. Is there away to sync google calendar and take handwritten notes like a planner? I wish the native memo app did that. I have also been having issues with apps crashing. I am not sure if that is normal. I’m not an Android user. 🤷🏻♀️ Thank you for your reviews.
I just received my remarkable paper pro. It took me exactly 20 minutes to put it back in its box and request a refund. This is nowhere near the experience of a remarkable 2. The noice is the worst. It sounds like writing on an iPad. Gone is the paper sound. Its hard surface sound is horrible. I can imagine in a meeting to get all the attention I don’t want. That is the main reason I don’t use my iPad anymore for this kind of thing. Also the refresh is very disturbing. When using color the repeated refresh is very distracting. It feels like good quality, but so does my remarkable 2. Another very disturbing thing is using the marker. Even after erasing you can still see the ghosting until you switch off and on again. Very strange. I am waiting for the remarkable 3, hopefully arriving next year. I don’t need color, backlight (hardly works), or the bigger size. For some it might work, but for me, using it purely as a paper replacement, note taking, and generally practicing my hand-writing, the remarkable 2 is perfect.
Have you tried any of the box tablets or super note? If writing feel is important, the super note with its sift screen and ceramic nib pen might be a good fit for you. It’s really the best pen on paper feel available in these tablets. Remarkable is second up, but wears out it nibs.
What would anyone consider the best E-Ink tablet to use with obsidian?
Thank you for your help ⚡
Does obsidian supports pen input? I would love this combo, perfect note taking solution with e2e encryption.
@@timetraveler_0 - yes 100%. Lots of easy to use plugins for that.
@@timetraveler_0 - yes, lots of easy to use pen input plugins for obsidian.
@@8020AliveWhat are the recommended plugins?
I don't have anything for comparison but I really enjoy using the Note Air 3c with obsidian
I considered the Onyx Boox but I read that there is substantial concerns on data privacy. Are those concerns overblown? They seem quite substantial and would be a deal breaker to most.
The concerns, from my understanding, is just the it's a China based company. So I don't mean to jump to conclusions, but I think people who say that aren't the best humans. "If it's from China it must be nefarious."
That’s not my understanding. Is the Android platform on which it runs is updatable with the latest security update? Also is its Onyx software updatable on the Google store? What I gathered was the answer was no to both which indeed leaves the device opens to significant security threats.
I cant speak to the security update but Onyx regularly releases updates for their devices to respond to the customer feedback section built into the settings panel @spinningwheel5230
Overblown I would say.
@@spinningwheel5230I’ve heard others say that their boox calls home to overseas servers several times a minute..
I’d say it’s probably fine thing to use, if you keep it offline. But they don’t advertise any on device encryption of your data, and would assume most online devices will be sending all your data off board. Especially ones with ai features built in (that’s why many security minded people won’t be using any new apple device is os level at that can circumvent all encryption and key logs as you create, allowing for back door access via ai data processing streams)
The BOOX color tablets have the same "flashing" problem. But it presents itself differently. On the BOOX, there is a similar "quick render" but where the reMarkable Paper Pro then refreshes when you end a stroke, the BOOX only refreshes when you change pen.
Better? Like all of this, it depends.
If you do a lot of notetaking in a single pen then the BOOX approach means you get less flashing while writing but then when you change pen there is MORE to be refreshed so the flashing takes longer.
If you primarily take notes in black and add the occasional bit of colour highlighting then the reMarkable approach means that there is a small area refreshing while you are busy changing pen so probably won't even notice the flashing (your eye point is in the tool bar, not scrutinising the strokes you just made).
A review situation (and indeed a period of initial use) is somewhat artificial since everyone is paying very close attention to details that won't be noticed in day to day use once you have adjusted.
I wonder if a color scribe is on its way
I'm in the minority. I returned the Boox 10.3 after a few weeks. I absolutely HATED the included stylus. It felt like a toy. I had to have a stylus that attaches magnetically to the side. I could not find a suitable one that attached magnetically. So I returned it and went back to my Remarkable 2. I also hated the notes interface. Having Android was pretty neat too but since it's Android 12, and it's never going to get updated, it would likely stop getting app support in a few years once app API requirements change. For some reason the simplicity of remarkable calls to me.
Lastly, I don't really trust the Boox devices for privacy and security. But that may be unfounded, but I always thought about that as I was using it.
Boox devices do not have good reviews in the retail store pages in my area, they do not have bad reviews, but they are not regarded as the top. Not sure why
There are videos on the security complaints. They are unfounded. If you use the device in the US your data is stored on US servers. Do you work for the department of defense or state department ? Probably not. Are you in the nuclear energy sector ? Im also guessing no. Should be fine. China has TikTok and manufactures every cell phone on the planet.
I got the Boox Go and didn’t like the stylus either-so I just used the remarkable stylus on the Boox. The Boox is no contest so much better and more capable than my Remarkable 2. Also I was able to update the Android version model too. I’m able to curate a distraction free experience for me just by turning off the notifications. But it’s cool to see that there’s a browser or full google play store if I need it.
Edit-The “it’s china ooh scary” Sinophobia is really embarassing for folks that fall for it. The fear is overblown. Unless you’re in government (in which case even dept of defense folks are not allowed even iphones) Facebook has collected and sold American data for far more annoying and nefarious reasons
@@kiddokta i don’t know what the claims are, but it is common that companies support devices of certain brands only. If I wanted to use a Boox device for work it wouldn’t be possible without breaching my contract unless I just use it for data below a certain confidential level. And I do not have a job in nuclear, defence or anything… serious companies take their IP and PR seriously. The second part is that yes, if you work with sensitive data, like medical data, you need to look at those claims because you are responsible (legally) if it leaks and you might end up in court. And the third part is that there are some people that like their data privacy and value open source licenses
@@kiddokta It's not the China "ooh scary", but according to my DNS (Pi Hole), it calls home a LOT. I don't really have anything of interest that any foreign government would ever want, but my remarkable only called home to update to the remarkable cloud. The Boox device would call back to their servers (with their cloud service denied) several times per minute. Likely innocuous, but still a *little* concerning and/or unnecessary.
really not a fan of AI thumbnails...
If I'm honest, I'm not really a fan of thumbnails at all. It's definitely the part of the process that I enjoy least, so whatever gets the job done really! Thanks for your feedback!
The content is always good, I can see thumbnails being a chore. Cheers!
Loved my boox go 10.3 but the build quality is a real concern. The screen on my device was damaged after sitting on charge at my desk using the provided charger. Boox customer support has been terrible with a reluctance to even look at the device. Purchase with caution please beware
Thanks for this, it's important to share all the opinions, useful for people!
Top 3 are boox 😂
